good afternoon, i'm mary calvi. chris wragge is on assignment. please need your help identifying a man wanted in an attemped rape in prospect park. the nypd released a sketch of the suspect along with surveillance video. he is accused of attacking a 23- year-old woman jogging in the park. we are live near the scene with more. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. yeah, it was inside this park yesterday, prospect park in brooklyn when police say a woman jogging early in the morning was attacked. police have this sketch of who they believe is the attacker. police have posted this sketch throughout the community, letting the community know, be on the lookout. these pieces of tape tied around poles inside prospect park in brooklyn are all that remains from yesterday's crime scene investigation. police say a man attacked a 23- year-old jog we are a knife and

she got away. so did he. but hopefully, not for long. as police released this sketch of the man they're looking for. >> this is a bad man that's in the park. >> yeah. >> if you see him, you go to a grown-up right away and you let us know, okay? >> okay. >> never talk to this man if you see him. okay? >> wow, scary. some bad people in the world. >> reporter: george davis shows his children and tells them to take a good look and police are asking you too as well. police also have this surveillance video. they believe this is the man they're looking for responsible for attacking a young woman and putting her community on alert. >> i've never seen the person that's on the posters. it made me think twice about, you know, just keeping my guard up a little bit more than normal. >> some of these people know how to disappear. so you know, they know that they're being looked for, they're not going to be in the area. >> reporter: and police are

man on all the posters that they have hung throughout this neighborhood, you're asked to giver them a call. live in park slope, brooklyn, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a wild crash in new jersey sent two people to the hospital. take a look at this video from chopper 2 over the scene just a short time ago. emergency crews worked to free overturned suv. the hospital. no word on their condition. police are now trying to figure out what caused the vehicle to overturn. residents in a long island community are surrounded by devastation after a fast-moving fire destroyed several homes and families lost everything. ilana gold is live. >> reporter: mary, the people who live on this block tell us that the fire was a huge set back after sandy and here's why. take a look at the damage. the scene out here is just incredible. the flames jump from home to home but this house in the

the fire leveled the structure and now it's a giant pile of rubble and some of the families lost absolutely everything. you can't miss the piles of burned up rubble and charred homes after a wind-driven fire spread through the neighborhood on wednesday. chopper 2 captured the fast- moving flames. embers torched a nearby wildlife refuge across the way. thick smoke and ash filled the area. what is it look to walk out and see this damage? >> it's like something, you know, something from a movie happened. it's surreal. >> reporter: this picture shows the house where the fire started when it engulfed in flames. investigators say an electrical short in a wall-mounted air conditioner is to blame. a mother and child inside ran out as soon as they smelled smoke and now they have nothing left. this place is leveled. neighbors tell us the family who lived here planned to move out soon to make repairs from superstorm sandy. the house next door now condemned.

rebuilding and hoped to move in next month. >> beautiful couple. young couple. it's terrible. >> reporter: the heat damaged two homes across the street and melted the siding. >> i was out here. and i turned around and like, oh, my god, it was melted. >> reporter: the wind and dry conditions today a concern for firefighters. they don't want the brush nearby to reignite so they are dousing the area with water to protect the properties. this community worries about more destruction. >> we will come together. we are a good community like that. and we're going to pull together and help these families. >> reporter: and back out here live where the victims are trying to move forward. we have seen some of them out here today. they're assessing the damage for the first time and working with the insurance companies. they say the one thing that they are thankful for though is that no one was hurt. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. the national weather service has also issued a red flag fire warning for new york city and parts of west chester and new jersey until 5:00 because of the dry and breezy

new at noon, guilty plea from the man accused of being the infamous ninja burglar. he admitted to breaking into three homes on staten island but isment ised in dozens of others during a 10-year span. according to his attorney, his client doesn't feel bad about stealing money. >> he feels bad about an emotional trauma that they went threw? >> he is not happy about harming anybody physically or emotionally. fortunately, there was nothing physical that was involved in the last 10 years. >> he is linked to similar crimes in new jersey, upstate new york and connecticut. he will be sentenced june 14th. new information on a hit- and-run that killed a legally blind pedestrian. police have made an arrest and recovered the vehicle involved. surveillance video shows the driver still going after he hit

sunday morning. police have released new video of two men they say are robbing taxi drivers in several queens neighborhoods. they say in many of the 14 cases, they approach the drivers after they have hopped out of the cabs. police say they flash a gun, demand cash and run off with the money. they are accused of stealing nearly $6,000 and several credit cards and phones since march 3rd. the death of a cyclist in brooklyn has local leaders demanding a crack down on truck drivers who go off-route. >> reporter: friends honor the life of the 33-year-old with flowers and candles placed at the corner of 6th avenue and sterling place where he was killed while riding his bike. >> he was always on the bike. so he is probably 90 for the morning bike ride. >> reporter: police say he was headed south on 6th avenue in the same direction as a large truck when he collided with the back tires. >> he may have found himself

realized the truck was, you you know, passing and he got clipped by the back tires. >> reporter: in the surveillance video, you can see the truck stop in the middle of the intersection just after the accident happens. many nearby heard the collision. >> i was a sleep and i heard what i think was a screech and a bang and a screech of tires. >> 6th avenue is a residential. it's not a truck route. >> reporter: the brooklyn borough president called attention to the fact that large 18-wheelers like the one in the crash are not permitted on 6th avenue without a permit. police say the driver in this accident was issued a summons for driving off-route. this map from the new york city department of transportation shows the accepted truck routes all over the city including brooklyn. 6th avenue and park slope is not an accepted route. residents say despite the regulation, trucks often roll through and claim police rarely stop them. >> open tolerance by the police

>> we cannot continue to have trucks and other vehicles on areas where they're not supposed to be. >> reporter: the street safety group transportation alternative says the death should serve as a call to the city to add more bike explains aggressively fight against reckless driving. vag degree castro, cbs 2 news. prosecutors are seeking lengthy sentence for sheldon silver. they ask that he be sentenced to at least 15 years in prison. that would be a record for any new york legislature. he was convicted last november corruption. sentencing is set for may 3rd. president barack obama met with leaders from six persian gulf nations. the country's focused on a variety of issues including isis and al-qaeda but it was the threat from iran that dominated the talks. craig boswell reports.

obama wrapped up a trip to saudi arabia which was meant to smooth over a relationship that's became strained. >> diane: lot of the strain was overblown. >> reporter: even if it is overblown, the president does differences. where there's tactical differences has been with respect to iran. >> reporter: there are suspicions within the gulf region about the obama administration's intentions after the u.s. brokered a nuclear deal with iran. during the trip, president barack obama had a two-hour meeting with the king that white house officials said cleared the air. the u.s. says the nuclear deal with iran could not have happened without support from arab allies and that it makes the region safer. >> even with the nuclear deal, we recognize collectively that we continue to have serious behavior.

there is a new king on broadway. the actor is taking over the starring role. >> that is the hit musical the king and i. and he will make his broadway debut starring as the king. for the past six seasons, he has starred on the cbs drama hawaii 5-0. >> i started my career here in new york many, many years ago. and to be able to come back to lincoln center and make my broadway debut, it's very special. >> coming back to broadway in this beautiful, gorgeous production is just -- i feel very grateful. very blessed. >> his co-star is played by the tony nominee. she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last may and is now in remission. the two take over the lead roles beginning may 3rd.

is having everyone whistling a happy tune. >> that's very good, mary. we all know our broadway. it's been beautiful but the issues we're dealing with today are wind and dry conditions. so the fire risk remains high. now that wind out of the southwest, some of the weather watchers reporting for duty with readings in the 70s. even 66 here. this is joseph there. i like that picture too. 66. but you head to the island and this is john. and he's only got 60 with the wind over the cooler ocean waters and that's definitely going to be the case. also, people making the case for birds. she's reminding us they need water. and adele saying, the hard real estate makes them hard to find the worm. a lot of folks lamenting on that tree pollen. and charlie who is actually an instructor and he is using the clouds to teach the class because the high clouds are creeping in. and here's why, we have a

shaller in the chance for rain. right now, not much in the way of cloud cover in the city but that will change during the course of the afternoon. sunny and 65, winds are calm. numbers around the area, again, reinforcing that southwest wind, 70 in edison. 61 in babylon. 56 in the hamptons. it's actually cooler than this time yesterday but it's a lot warmer to the west with that southwest wind. that said, mary mentioned this top of the show, this is the area, jersey and in through the city as well, up into westchester with this red flag fire warning until about 6:00 p.m. so if you see something, it's crucial that you make that call quick. and obviously, it's important that you're fire safe and make sure we don't start any fires. we need the rain for the season. we are over 5 inches below normal. now it's dry and it's also, i mean, the weather watcher sending in these beautiful buds but that means birch, now oak filling in. so the pollen count is high

numbers going to be higher. 56 now. shooting for 74. already above normal. that's 63. sun sets at 7:42. so the radar shows clear but we have this system rolling in from the west. so we will make a few stops on the futurecast to show you what we're looking at. we see clouds fill in. maybe a stray shower well west late tonight. and tomorrow morning, could see a passing shower. not a lot of activity. and then the possibility of a thunderstorm by friday night. lingering shower early saturday but then things shape up for your saturday and cooler for the march for babies coming in on sunday. cool in the morning, 64 sunday afternoon. >> great to hear they're going to have a great day for that. >> i think so. >> thank you so much. and now let's head to the produce aisle. stephanie tantillo has the tip of the day. >> reporter: hey everybody. talk we're going to talk about spinach. remember, it's absolutely fabulous for you. it's a great source of finer and a great source of other vitamins.

very important. when you see spinach in the market, i love loose leaf spinach because that means the leaves are able to breathe. you want to make sure you don't see a lot of yellowing. predominantly it has a deep, green color and the leaves are nice and crisp. when they wilt, you get a strong odor. so give it a little bit of a whiff. it should smell nice and fresh. when you bring it home, store it. i like to store it in a paper towel and wrap it up or keep it as open as possible. and wash it only before you use it. that being said because the water will wilt it quicker. you use it. and it's one of my favorite things to saute but two cups cooked. don't overcrowd the pan but have a lot onhand. and do it in batches.
