>> party like it's 1999. >> as new york city proudly present -- pays its respects to prince. good evening. i'm kristine johnson. >> i'm maurice dubois. >> tonight we have live pictures from minneapolis where a massive crowd has gathered to mourn him in his home state. also tonight, multiple bridges for prince. >> back here in new york, brooklyn borough hall is lit up to honor the artist. at the famous apollo theater, the lyrics to purple rain are proudly displayed. that is where we find cbs2's lou young tonight. blue, so many fans paying their respects. >> reporter: it is winding down now but they always say you've never really appreciate what you have until it's gone. the people at the apology -- apollo theater feel that way tonight about prince but they are intensely grateful for the body of work he left behind. >>

know that prince was married and divorced twice and is survived by a 19-year-old son. young, cbs2 news. >> thank you. prince was only 57 years old. his death unexpected. cbs2's jennifer mayor lee has more from outside prince's compound outside of minneapolis. >> reporter: i'm here outside prince's the state 20 miles outside of minneapolis where the frantic chain of events under -- unfolded around 9:43 local time. >> needed for a person not breathing. >> reporter: police and paramedics arrived at the scene and found the 57-year-old singer unresponsive in an elevator. they tried cpr, but they were onyx -- unable to revive him. at 10:07 local time, the grammy and oscar winner was pronounced dead. vince had been battling illness over the last few weeks forcing him to cancel two shows this

>> [ singing ] purple rain. purple rain. >> reporter: he felt well enough to perform last thursday in atlanta's fox theater put on the flight home, his plane was forced to land in illinois where he was treated for what emergency, possibly related to hundreds of people have continued to show up at paisley park studios. have been here throughout the day and into the night. you can barely see the wall of flowers and the fence outside the studios. people out here saying they are still in disbelief that prince could be gone. we have learned an autopsy will be performed on friday. in chanhassen, minnesota, jennifer mayerle he, cbs2 news. prince's sister was spotted outside the compound tonight and she offered a message to her brother's fans. >> thank you. thank you for loving him. thank you. >> with her hair dyed purple, nelson hugged supporters and thanked them for the bouquets,

left outside of prince's home. president obama said he and the first lady joined the millions of fans mourning his death. the president released a statement today saying on -- the world lost a creative icon. he was a virtuoso if -- a brilliant bandleader and an electrifying performer. >> muthana posted a picture on twitter, and wrote, he changed the world. a true visionary, what a loss. i'm devastated. this is not a love song. >> oprah winfrey tweeted, prince, the doves really are crying now. listening to your music, remembering you, rest in peace, prince. and we have complete coverage of the death of prince on our website, cbsnewyork.com. you can leave your own tributes on the facebook page. now to an update on the voting problems in tuesday's primaries, tonight the board of elections suspended brooklyn

the names of 126,000 brooklyn voters were removed from the rolls ahead of the election. state attorney general eric schneiderman and comptroller scott stringer have both launched investigations. a railroad crossing the government says is downright dangerous. with more than a dozen crashes since 2006, we learned today that one northern new jersey trade intersection was named among the 15 worst in the country. cbs2's brian conybeare has more on the crossing and what's being done about it. >> reporter: this railroad crossing on midland avenue in elmwood park new jersey is one of the worst in the entire nation. >> i would say dangerous, confusing. >> reporter: a new list out thursday shows this sharply angled crossing had the sixth most train versus car incidents out of more than 200,000 crossings nationwide. including a january crossings nationwide. including a january 2014 crash between an nj transit commuter train at a vehicle that got stuck on the tracks.

time. there have been 14 such incidents here in the past 10 years alone. but now $800,000 in safety upgrades have been made in an effort to change that. >> before the improvements it was a hazard. >> reporter: the elmwood park police chief credits new computerized stoplights, traffic sensing cameras, warning flashes, improve signs and pavement markings put in by the state last summer for making things safer. >> it's better for the motorists because they don't get stuck on the tracks, the light will come on, warning signals will come on before the trains are even remotely close to the area. >> reporter: some drivers remain skeptical. >> is ever enough? things are always going to happen. >> reporter: the state dot hopes the improvements will eventually get the crossing off the most dangerous list in the future. from elmwood park, brian conybeare, cbs2 news. new information, new york city corruption scandal, a federal probe into mayor de

includes a big donor that lobbied him to ban horse carriages. the anti-horse carriage group, new york class, has donated generously to mayor de blasio. ny class activists reportedly met with the mayor about four times since taking office. investigators are reportedly trying to determine if promises were made in exchange for donations. today, cbs2 political reporter marcia kramer asked the mayor about it. >> reporter: talked to them about raising money for you? >> at city hall, i talk how to get horse carriages off the street of our city. period. >> reporter: a spokesperson says investigators have not contacted them but they will cooperate fully if they do. without thinking twice, about their own safety, good samaritans jump into action to rescue a driver from a burning car in new jersey. cbs2's tracee carrasco with the exclusive story. >> reporter: a monday evening

anything but routine for 17- year-old anthony dispirito and 20-year-old nicholas lehman off. >> i heard a call over my radio that was an unconscious male in the parking lot. >> reporter: a volunteer with the community emergency response team and dispirito then spotted spoke in the parking lot. moments later the blue 2003 sob went up in flames. with the 22-year-old man inside. he didn't hesitate. >> i was able to do it just in time before a lot of fuel leaked out and the flames got worse. so seconds to spare. when they pulled him out of the car he was more unconscious and that he started to gain inch a little bit. >> reporter: he pulled the man to safety, first responders arrived to put out the flames. the driver may have fallen asleep with his foot on the gas. >> i'm glad i was around and able to save his life. >> reporter: monday's incident isn't the first time nicholas has been in the right place at the right time. a month ago he helped rescue another man trapped inside his vehicle.

his wife rosa revealed silver is battling prostate cancer and wrote this. i am not sure what i can say to your honor except that husband is a good man. and his son it said this. he is not an evil criminal or sinister being. prosecutors want a sentence of at least 15 years. new tonight police are investigating a crime at a popular downtown manhattan bar. the suspect is a woman and investigators hope showing her face will help catch this criminal. take a close look, police say this woman held a knife to another woman's face inside growler bar on south william street. and then tried to grab her purse. police say the suspect took off before anyone could stop her. she didn't steal anything but she is wanted for assault. those costume wearing characters in times square will soon face limits on where they can go. mayor de blasio signed a bill today that bans them from blocking pedestrians in the traffic free parts of times square. the rule change allows or

a couple folks could see more than half an inch. not a huge event but i do believe it's going to be making its way through the area. what you see right now on the vortex satellite and radar , i know this looks like we're seeing some rain up there, most of this not making its way down to the ground. fire situations we've had, three days in a row, such a dry atmosphere, you've really got to work, this atmosphere has got to churn to overwhelm that dryness we were experiencing right now with somewhat weather. so maybe around kingston, dark green, a light shower falling, better chance for rain will be tomorrow as this front makes its way through, trailing action behind it as well. let's time it out for you, morning commute, not too much out there, maybe a little bit of leading action. the better bet to see what weather would be after 3:00 p.m. your 4:00 p.m. shot, scattered, not everybody getting it. some peaks of sun shine, that's where i raised the temperature up. you do get peaks of sunshine and pop an 80 degree reading. lingering rain to start of saturday, sunday looks to be a

pulled. so much was on the line for the rangers tonight. wanted to see them show the urgency of a team on the brink. what we saw was a rangers squad that was listless. it took all of 69 seconds for the penguins to take advantage. henrik lundqvist leaves a juicy rebound, and he's going to hate watching the replay of that. by the time the first horn sounded, the rangers were down 3-0. they got booed off the ice at the first intermission. any chance of a comeback was gone when evgeni malkin buries this. the penguins had five power plays. they scored on three of them. that was it for lundqvist, four goals on 18 shots. that could be it for the rangers as well, they head back
