look at the weather. we had a wonderful weekend. the streak continues for your monday, so we have a good monday temperature-wise as well. we will see rain as early as monday night, definitely for tuesday. just remember, we need it. let's go ahead and take a look at some of the numbers. current temperatures right now, not bad. temps in the upper 40s to low 50s. as we broaden out a bit, take a look. 36 in the hamptons, sort of the cool spot, the cold spot in the area. monticello at 50. central park at 52, same at greenwich. temps, not bad. expect cool temperatures, but really calm overnight. high pressure still dominating, so not much to talk about overnight by way of moisture or cloud cover. we have warm sunshine tomorrow with a few clouds starting to make their way in, but really the high pressure system slides offshore tomorrow. by monday night, we are talking about cloudy skies. the rain should return monday night and then we're expecting showers, even thunderstorms as we head into the day on tuesday.
11:40 pm
this is the year so far, right? so far in 2016, we've had 11.3 inches of rain. normally we would be approaching 15. we need 3 1/2 inches. we won't get that, but could get an inch to inch and a half monday night. we do need the rain. vortex and satellite and radar, high pressure dominating. not a lot to look at, but this is the setup. this is what we are expecting sort of heading our waymon night into tuesday. this is the system right here moving through parts of minnesota. and now as we turn on your future cast, this is sort of what it looks like. we're heading through tuesday overnight. starts on monday night, talking about showers, possibly thunderstorms. it continues through tuesday morning and then kind of, again, through tuesday at lunchtime, tuesday, your evening commute. showers and thunderstorms. then things finally calm down just a bit, so just be mindful.

shoulders of the islanders. a return to the stanley cup for them might be a little ambitious, but tonight they can win a series, something they haven't done in more than two decades. game 6 against the panthers in brooklyn, and let's not forget, florida hasn't won a series since their stanley cup run back in '96. thomas griese would like to have this one back. it's 1-0 panthers in the first. griese, though, was great the rest of the way. new york still needed to get a goal. asked and answered. the mark of a true captain is someone who shows up in the clutch and john tavaris. just to test the hearts of islanders fans, this game goes to double overtime again and tavaris does it again. this is what a franchise player does. working overtime in overtime.
11:45 pm
series victory in 23 years. >> we fought hard, gave ourselves a chance. thomas was incredible. we stuck to the end to find a way. nice to get it. tonight we wanted to get it done at home and get a series win. to move on, we're excited. just incredible. time to welcome in once again the host of the da show on cbs sports radio, our friend damon, to give us all of his opinions. da, good to see you, once again. >> always good to be here. >> talking hockey off the top. henrik hundred lundquist are out. is too much being thrown on his shoulders? too much of the blame right now? >> no question. he's the easy scapegoat because they haven't won a stanley cup with him. he did not have a good series, no doubt about it, especially the last couple of games. however, there's no way the rangers have any stanley cup
11:46 pm
lundquist. to put it all on his shoulders is unfair. you wouldn't be here without him and the defense in front, they were outclassed. penguins team is so much better than the rangers. >> his numbers, since he won the trophy, his numbers have gone down every year since. they are starting to trend down, but i almost feel like this guy is kind of like the peyton manning of the nhl. does he need a stanley cup for validation? >> in some ways, yes. great goaltenders, great goal minders make their reputation in the nhl post season, a guy like patrick roy, dominic, marty brodeur, became statues because of what they did in may and june and going to the stanley cup. but henrik doesn't really need that to validate that he's a great and an all-time great in a lot of ways. >> i was on your radio show this week, talking about the knicks and phil jackson, which is really big. it's almost entertaining to see. >> like stand-up! really fun! >> watching this i guess unfold
11:47 pm
jackson, we've known him to be calm and cool, but his pr people are coming out against jeff van gundy. he's lashed out at the media a little bit here. is the zen master losing his zen? >> not so zen when you're getting defensive and you're firing back. now, i understand if you have 11 rings, you're going to be protective of your legacy. >> and proud, sure. >> and your reputation. but the simple fact is, even phil jackson understands that he's fallen well below expectations where this team is right now, where the organization is. it's not just wins and losses. knicks fans understand that it's more about does it feel like it's growing towards something? is it cohesive? can they draw free agents? are they building it the right way? it's a very hard sell right now. they are not winning a lot of basketball games. they don't really seem to have an inspirational coach, and they can't draw free agents and they don't have a draft pick in the first round this year. so knicks fans are, like, what the heck is going on?
11:48 pm
conference, if you will, and melo didn't even attend that triangle conference. what kind of message do you think that sends? >> well, i don't blame melo. i understand on the periphery it looks bad. but imagine if bill belichick after they lose the afc championship game says, okay, everybody super bowl week you got to be here because we're installing the offense. it's crazy to do that as soon as the season is over. that's what training camp is for. that's what the preseason is for. to do it right after the year just smacks of desperation of wanting it to look a certain way for phil and it looked stupid. >> right, right. if we want to play the opposite end here, of the spectrum, he did gut the team when everybody expected him to. he should have done that. he did re-sign melo. he got christophe. he did choose the right coach in steve kerr. he's made smart signings in the off season as well. again, if you were to poll him right now in new york, his
11:49 pm
somewhere around de blasio and ted cruz. [ laughter ] is that in and of itself unfair? >> in some ways, yes, because expectations were huge because he took over and he was phil jackson. he was a knicks legend and he had all of these rings. so the expectation was, well, here we'll get great again. unfortunately, outside of getting porzingis, so what, you picked steve kerr. he didn't want to come here for a reason. derek fisher was a total bust. is kurt rambis the guy? do you need to run the triangle? all of this stuff seems like one step forward and one step back. well, the nfl draft is this week and you wrote about how trading up in the nfl draft is fools gold. why do you believe that? >> every time throughout nfl history that teams have tried to swap out a bunch of draft picks to go get one guy, it has busted in their face. it's gone kaboom. you look at the herschel walker trade, what that did for the dallas cowboys, built a dynasty. the vikings never amounted to
11:50 pm
you look at guys that have-- >> ricky williams, another one. >> ricky williams. an entire draft traded away. carson palmer, jay cutler. these are all guys you try to go up, get, and/or, you know, acquire through draft picks and inevitably it has not led to post season success of any kind for the team that did it. >> okay. so the flipside of that, that was the past, but it's a little different now because of the finances of it. now you're getting a quarterback at pick 1 or 2, paying him 4 to $5 million. if you go out in the free agent market to try to get a secondary quarterback, chase daniel cost $7 million. you want brock osweiler, that's $18 million. it's a little bit more cost- controlled to get a quarterback at 1 and 2 right now in the nfl draft. don't you think that maybe finances play a little bit of a role in this? >> it's a fair point except because you need rookie picks to flesh out the rest of the roster, trading away multiple
11:51 pm
there's a reason that when washington acquired rg-iii there was no talent around him. even though he flamed out, they had lost all of these draft picks. same thing's going to happen with the rams and the eagles. they will go get a quarterback, but the quarterback won't have enough pieces around him at an affordable price. >> okay. which one do you believe is a better excuse for trading up? rams did it because they wanted to jump start their new program in los angeles. the eagles say their scouts believe there isn't an nfl quarterback available in the next two seasons. which one is more justified? >> well, that's idiotic to say there's no quarterback available the next two seasons. where was carson wentz one year ago? i'm guessing he wasn't number one on the eagles draft board for 2016. so that's stupid to say. i think both reasons are dumb. you don't marines to make splashes in your community in l.a. you don't do it if you have $27 million wrapped up in quarterbacks in philadelphia. i'll give you the eagles somewhat of a pass because they have a brand-new head coach who
11:52 pm
peterson. in l.a., jeff fisher is the place and the coach where quarterbacks go to die. jared goff, good luck with all that. >> right. it's still a couple of years before goff gets in that rotation. we got to get to our final three. last time we spoke to you, our questions were who was going to go a little bit further in the ncaa tournament? kansas or nova? you said kansas. villanova ended up winning the national championship. would there be four or fewer presidential candidates? you said yes. there are five still. >> uh-huh. >> will there be an incident in the mets and the royals first series? you said no. so you were correct on that. so far for the season, you are 17-13 for the season. you're above ground. >> fine, i'll take that. >> so this time we want to ask you, everybody's talking about daniel murphy versus neil walker, the current mets second baseman versus the old mets second baseman. it's difficult to measure their value on each team because of
11:53 pm
so who will have the berwyn above replacements? i know you're a saber metrics guy. >> walker has been amazing through the first month of the season for the mets. i loved that acquisition when it happened. it's another example of sandy alderson pulling the wool over somebody's eyes. >> a-rod is batting .132 right now. will he be above .175 next time? >> yes, but only slightly. maybe .180. still below the mendoza line. >> unbelievable. >> that's a bad yankees team right now. >> roger goodell has had issues pronouncing names in the past. one of the top draft pick's names is robert kimdicha's name? >> no doubt. you know the silent -- he's definitely going to blow that. no doubt in my mind. >> last year he mispronounced
11:54 pm
>> might not even be him! >> he might escape that. >> you could get out of this one! >> let's see also awkward bro hug. >> definitely on the table. >> lots of those. >> you can hear the da show every night on cbs sports radio. damon amendolara, thank you for joining us. >> absolutely. a few other scores, yankees and the rays in the bronx. tampa didn't take batting practice before this game, but they got their cuts in against michael peneda. for all the talk about the bad yankees offense this year, the reality is the rays are even worse. tampa is second to last in runs scored and batting average, but peneda kept grooving them in the zone and the rays stuck him for four homers in five innings. bombers have now lost 8 of 11. 8-1, the final. alex rodriguez left this game with oblique stiffness. results of the mri were negative. mets trying to close out their road trip with a record of 7-2. they fell short of the six runs per game they were
