with some food. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. voters in five eastern states begin casting their primary ballots in a few hours in the ever-contentious race for the presidential nomination. the democrats are fighting for 384 delegates. front runner hillary clinton is leading polls in all five states. 118 republican delegates are up for grabs. ted cruz and john kasich are doing everything they can to keep as many as possible away from front runner donald trump. brooke, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. that plan by cruz and kasich to work together in three states to keep trump from securing the nomination came under predictable and sustained attack from the gop front runner on monday. trump spent much of his rally using it as an example of what

this morning it's back to the business of amassing delegates. >> reporter: donald trump spent the eve of today's contest rallying support in the critical state of pennsylvania. voters there will not only cast a ballot for their party nominee, they'll also choose the delegates who will personally pick who the pennsylvania delegation supports at the gop convention. >> you have to go out, and you have to get your beautiful delegate card and you have to vote for your delegates. >> reporter: yesterday, trump lashed out at ted cruz and john kasich for teaming up to deny him delegates, taking particular aim at the ohio governor. >> he puts pantex this big in his mouth and he's shoving them in. >> reporter: after trying to down play the alliance earlier in the day, kasich defended the move. >> it's about resources and trying to stop hillary clinton. >> reporter: on the democratic side, hillary clinton appears poised to sweep all five states

last night she criticized bernie sanders in his reluctance to back her. >> i spent an enormous amount of time convincing my supporters to support him. that is what i think one does. >> reporter: the vermont senator told "cbs this morning" that he isn't giving up. >> we're going to continue to fight. >> reporter: wins today would put clinton on track to clinch the nomination by mid-may. >> clinton will hold her election night event in pennsylvania this evening while donald trump will be at trump tower in new york. anne-marie? >> brooks, thanks. well, president obama is back in washington this morning after a trip overseas where he announced that he will substantially increase the number of u.s. troops in syria to help local forces fight isis. "cbs this morning" charlie rose talked with the president in germany about his decision. >> you are sending 250 special forces to syria. what does that represent?

from the start, which is that us dismantling isil is a priority, and although we're not going to be sending ground troops in to fight, we are going to try to find out what works and then double down. one of the things that's worked so far is us putting special forces in for training and advising of local forces but also intelligence gathering. one of the challenges of mounting a fight against a group like isil that embeds itself with civilian forces, they're not isolated, they're not out in remote areas where we can just hit them on their own. so having people who develop relationships with local tribes, with people who may be going in and out of places like raqqah, us being able to distinguish between those who we can work and those we can't.

obama coming up a little later on "cbs this morning." severe weather is expected to batter parts of the central united states today. meteorologists warn powerful tornadoes and softball sized hail could strike the central and southern plains. the area at greatest risk stretches from northern oklahoma all the way to southern nebraska. hail pummelled parts of texas yesterday. this amateur video shows it falling in san antonio. other parts of the state saw hail that measured nearly three inches. and the manhunt continues today for the killer or possibly killers of eight family members executed in their homes in southern rural ohio. police found extensive marijuana grow operations at three of the four crime scenes. a law enforcement source tells cbs news investigators are considering several possible motives, including whether there could be a mexican drug cartel

now we're hearing from the father of one of the victims as he remembers his slain daughter. >> she'd give you the shirt off her back. she worked hard. >> the eight victims, seven adults and a teenage boy, were shot in the head on friday. the city of cleveland will pay $6 million to settle a pwrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of tamir rice. the 12-year-old killed by a police officer in 2014. the officers were responding to a 911 call about someone waving a gun. the gun turned out to be a toy. as part of the settlement, the city did not admit any wrongdoing. >> a 12-year-old died. irregardless of fault or facts or anything, it should not have happened. >> a grand jury refused to indict either officer. both kept their jobs but have been on desk duty ever since.

into a home in florida, critically injuring the three people on board. this video shows the burning wreckage of the plane and the fire that broke out in the povrp know beach home. no one was inside the home when the plane hit it yesterday. the ntsb is working to figure out why this all happened. and a federal appeals court ruled the nfl commissioner has the right to suspend tom brady in the deflategate scandal, putting the new england quarterback back on the sideline to serve his suspension. ryan webb reports. >> reporter: tom brady must serve a four-game suspension according to an appeals court decision monday, reversing a lower court ruling on the deflategate controversy. the panel found nfl commissioner roger goodell properly exercised his broad discretion under the collective bargaining agreement, and his rulings did not deprive brady of fundamental fairness. in may, the national football

quarterback after an investigation concluded he probably knew patriots employees deliberately underinflated footballs during the 2015 afc championship game. but in september, a district court threw out the penalty. brady spoke to reporters after that decision. >> obviously i have a lot of personal feelings, but i really don't care to share many of those. i really care to think about what i need to do moving forward. >> reporter: the national football league based here in new york released a statement saying it is pleased with the appeals court ruling. brady and the nfl players association can now appeal the matter all the way to the supreme court. the players association says it is considering all of its options. brian webb for cbs news, new york. to the nba playoffs now, where the l.a. clippers were dealt a crucial blow in their loss to the portland trailblazers last night. chris paul left the game with a

the clippers are now tied at 2-2 with rip city. paul's return is up in the air. he's averaged 26.3 points a game in the playoffs. and bad news for the golden state warriors. the team will be without sharp shooter steph curry for at least two weeks. the reigning league mvp has a sprained ligament in his right knee, an injury he suffered during sunday's win over the houston rockets. curry will be sidelined for the rest of the first round of playoffs, a potential three more games against houston, and at least another four games if the warriors advance to the second round. golden state currently leads the rockets 3-1. and in their first game at home since prince's passing, the minnesota twins hosted purple for prince night in honor for the hometown icon. the team asked fans to wear their best purple, and the players adopted new walk-up music for the night. every player picked their favorite prince song.

"the washington post" reports a $1.8 million lawsuit against former house speaker dennis hastert. an unnamed man claims hastert promised him the money to keep quiet about sexual abuse decades ago. hastert already paid him nearly all of that money and broke banking laws in the process, and he will be sentenced for that tomorrow. "the tennesseen" reports on erin andrews. terms were not revealed. buzz squnfeed reports that a transgender woman claims to have used the bathroom in the office of the north carolina governor. at least 50 demonstrators were arrested yesterday in the capital, raleigh. they were protesting a new state law that bans transgender people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity and also bans anti-discrimination

and are barring the company from charging customers more based on how much data they use. the federal government ended its investigation into honda's failure to report complaints that its vehicle caused deaths and injuries. honda was fined $70 million in 2014 in what was then the largest civil penalty ever against an automaker. honda was also required to take steps to ensure the problem doesn't happen again. france-based airbus delivered its first american-made aircraft. the airbus a-321 was produced at the company's manufacturing plant in alabama and was presented to its new owner jetblue yesterday. nine more aircraft are in production there. airbus plans on producing four a month from the mobile facility by the end of next year. and americans arehanging the way they travel to their summer vacation spot. a new poll by airfare watchdog found 23% plan to drive to their destinations this year. that's up 18% from last year.

some lucky ducks escaped certain danger thanks to oklahoma city firefighters. the ducklings managed to become trapped in a sewer after wandering away from their mother. the firefighters carefully got into the storm drain and pulled the ducklings to safety one by one. once they made it to higher ground, the ducks wandered away with their mommy. an l.a. intersection got a soaking monday afternoon. a car sheered off a fire hydrant, launching hundreds of thousands of gallons of water into the air for more than an air. people in the area were critical of the crew's response time given the drought that's plaguing california. and a risky rescue for an l.a. firefighter after a hiker became stranded on the side of a steep cliff monday afternoon. crews positioned themselves underneath and above the hiker. eventually the firefighter rappelled down the cliff and

here's another look at this morning's top stories. five eastern states hold primary elections today, including delegate-rich pennsylvania. democratic front runner hillary clinton is leading bernie sanders in all of them. sanders told "cbs this morning" he plans to continue on until the last vote. and republican donald trump is also expected to score victories in those five states. his opponents, john kaisich and ted cruz, are now working together to try to prevent trump from winning the delegates he needs to secure the gop nomination. well, the pentagon is preparing to get more deeply involved in the war in syria. david martin reports. >> reporter: the sharp spike in the number of american special forces in syria will begin within the next two weeks and should, if it goes according to plan, produce more of this. the liberation of this syrian crossroads town from isis

accomplished by local fighters advised by americans on the ground and backed by air strikes from above. until now, small band of 50 u.s. special forces has been trying to coordinate 30,000 local fighters along a 300-mile front stretching across syria. by sending in another 250 americans, president obama is attempting to turn that rag tag force into an army that could push isis out of its capital of raqqah, which is defended by an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 fighters. announcing the decision during a speech in germany, the president vowed none of the americans, most of them green berets, would be engaged in combat. >> they're not going to be leading the fight on the ground, but they will be essential in providing the training and assisting local forces they continue to drive isil back. >> reporter: with orders to remain out of visual range of isis fighters, the american
