than just chant their disdain for the party's front runner donald trump. some also threw eggs, while others burned the american flag. they broke through barriers and tried to storm the hotel and officers held them back. around the same time, trump ditched his motorcade before it reached the parking lot. an unusual sight, as he and his security team members went the rest of the way on foot, walking in the back of the building and up to the stage. >> we went under a fence and through a fence and felt like i was crossing the border actually. >> reporter: also in california, republican john kasich at a town hall in san francisco. republican ted cruz campaigned in indiana, seen here with bakery workers in evansville. cruz hit back at former house speaker john boehner who earlier this week referred to the texas senator as lucifer in the flush. cruz suggested boehner wants to be his vice president. >> one has been funding the cartel. the other has been giving in to democrats for years, which is

>> reporter: as for democrats, bernie sanders was in indianapolis with union workers protesting job cuts. >> stop destroying the middle class. >> reporter: hillary clinton was at a new york city fund- raiser, pushing for the expansion of a network of all- boys public schools in high crime areas. earlier, she said this about what she calls trump's bullying. >> demeaning me, you know, talking about playing the woman's card. we're going to talk about what we want to do for the country and he can continue on his insult fest. >> focusing on hillary, she'll go down easier than any of the people we just beat. >> reporter: during the california trump protest, five people were arrested and an officer was treated for minor injuries. live in the newsroom, dave carlin, cbs 2news. >> dave, thank you. new information tonight on an oil slick near the george washington bridge. police say it is dissipating quickly enough that no cleanup is necessary. the slick was discovered around 3:00 this afternoon and it stretched almost a mile long. investigators say it's unclear

a leak, but at this point, nothing more is entering the water. charges are pending against two robbery suspects who set off a wild chain of events in harlem today. police were trailing them around 2:45 this afternoon when their cruiser collided with a getaway car at 139th street and 7th avenue. the suspects were eventually arrested. two officers were also hospitalized with minor injuries. an n.y.p.d. officer could be fired from the force for an attack that was caught on camera. today, a judge convicted joel edward of assaulting a suspect handcuffed. in 2014, a bystander saw edward kicking a suspect. june. a taped confession is shining new light on the

fire in 2014 that killed n.y.p.d. officer dennis guerra. marcell dockery admits to starting the fire, because he says he was bored. he admitted to setting fires since he was 9 years old. his attorney claims the confession was coerced. part of a neighborhood in westchester county is in the dark tonight, after a big problem with power lines. you see, those lines fell, causing a surge that fried fuse boxes and electronics. cbs 2's brian conybeare reports from elmsford. >> reporter: several homes remain in the dark on north everett avenue in elmsford after a frightening power surge thursday afternoon. >> i saw a big crash. >> reporter: mary anne hope said light bulbs went into flames. >> the tv went off and we had a lamp that exploded. >> reporter: a primary con edison power line carrying 13,000 volts somehow broke free and hit a smaller wire, sending

an army of electricians is checking the situation. >> my printer, my laptop, they are fried. >> reporter: romero's outlets are black. virtually his entire electrical system needs to be replaced. >> how much do you think this is going to cost you? >> so far it's like $7000. >> reporter: con edison says residents can submit a reimbursement claim, but the company does not pay for damages out of its control. con ed says we are still investigating, but we believe tree contact with a power line is what caused the event. romero says he saw the power line itself explode. >> didn't touch any branches, any trees, anything at all. >> it just blew up? >> it just blew up. >> we didn't do anything to cause this problem. >> reporter: you can see this electrical panel was completely burnt to a crisp by the power surge. neighbors tell me their insurance companies will pick up some of the damage costs, but not this part.

westchester county, brian conybeare, cbs 2news. new information tonight on the death of prince. the carver county sheriff's office says there were four emergency calls to prince's home since 2013. that october, officers responded for medical assistance and again last august and september. the final call was last thursday, when prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at the paisley park compound. and prince fans in brooklyn continued to celebrate his life. hundreds of fans gathered in fort green park for a prince party tonight. in addition to dancing to his music, fans watched the cult classic "purple rain," starring prince. we have a commuter alert now. if you're taking the tappen zee bridge this weekend, plan ahead. just hours ago, all but one northbound lane was shut down, as construction began on the new span. the three lanes will stay

tomorrow and then again from 9:00 on saturday night until 2:00 sunday afternoon. all southbound lanes will stay open. if you throw something away, don't assume it's gone forever. that's the advice tonight from a staten island woman whose wedding and engagement rings were taken out with the trash. cbs 2's tracee carrasco has the story, new at 11:00. >> i was, like, oh, my god. he's going to kill me. >> reporter: tiffany and christopher otterbecome will never forget the staten island mother of two made meat loaf for dinner. >> i took my rings off, put them in the paper towel next to the sink. >> reporter: the next morning at work, tiffany realized something was missing. >> i called my mom, frantic, telling her she had to go outside. it's pickup day. you have to get the garbage. my rings are in the garbage. she was like, i can't, they just came. >> reporter: that's when panic really set in. tiffany called 311, the sanitation department, and multiple city agencies to see if anything could be done. >> they located the truck,

instructed them not to dump the garbage. >> reporter: that garbage truck was brought here to the staten island transfer station for the otterbecks to dig through those piles of crash in hopes of finding tiffany's ring. >> to see what we were working with, to see the pile, the pile. >> reporter: this is what tiffany, her husband and father- in-law saw, an estimated 10 tons of smelly garbage. the otterbecks brought a sample of their bags with them so they had an idea of what they were looking for. while sanitation workers are not required to help, supervisor roger vatter and four of his guys, already off duty, couldn't let them do it alone. >> seeing how anxious they were, they wanted to find it, there was empathy involved. >> reporter: the department of sanitation says this happens often. their best advice? call 311 as soon as you realize the mistake. if they can get to your trash fast enough, they usually have a high success rate. as for tiffany, after 45

to save an elderly woman whose car plunged into connecticut's thames river. 85-year-old marie fitzgerald was trying to park her car along the waterfront when she went through the barrier and into the 44-degree water. a bystander tried to break the windshield and get her out. with water quickly rising in the car, an officer had no choice but to jump in. >> i broke the window. luckily enough, i was able to get the door handle right away from the inside and the door came right open. >> lieutenant jenkins says he is happy he was able to help pull fitzgerald to safety. we have a warning about a new crime spree on long island. a suspect is stealing garage door openers and then burglarizing homes. surveillance video shows a hooded man wanted for two burglaries on dale and janet courts. investigators say the man steals the devices from unlocked cars. in one of the crimes, a homeowner scared the suspect away when she woke up. police say the man stole cash

unveiled today, a special box where people can lock and leave unwanted newborn babies. indiana has become the first state to introduce these boxes under its safe haven law. they are about the size of a microwave oven. there are several alarms and a motion sensor that alert authorities whether a baby has been placed in one. the idea came from a woman who saw something similar in south africa. actor will ferrell has backed out of a role surrounded by controversy. ferrell had signed on to portray ronald reagan in a comedic movie based on the late president and his battle with alzheimers. reagan's daughter, patti davis, was not amused, writing an open letter to ferrell to convince him to turn down the role, which he did this afternoon. no word on if the movie will still make it to theaters. new tonight, now new york is recognized around the world for its remarkable skyline. >> but for some, the temptation

involves illegal, even death- defying risks. tonight, cbs 2's alice gainer takes us inside the world of sky high snappers. >> reporter: this is new york at its most breath taking and heart stopping. >> reporter: those are photographer james mc. nally's toes hanging over that ledge. in this and other images, he's perched hundreds, sometimes thousands of feet above the ground, never tethered to anything. >> my goal there is to make as compelling and gripping of a photo as possible and so, you know, if dangling a foot over the edge a few inches helps, then why not. >> reporter: mc. nally is known as a rooftopper, a type of urban explorer whose ultimate prize is a photograph taken from an inaccessible roof, a dangerous ledge, even a spire. >> what sort of feeling do you get when you've made it to the top, before you start shooting? around? >> there are some places where, to be totally honest, i'll get

immediately, shoot for a few minutes and leave as quickly as possible. >> reporter: and that's because he's usually there illegally. >> because you posted some of these images, it caught the attention of the n.y.p.d. and some building security and so you were arrested twice? >> i wish that things sort of transpired a little bit differently. but as far as getting on the radar of those people, very much not surprised. >> reporter: mc. nally was recently in a manhattan court to face four misdemeanor counts. the building that's pressing charges is 70 pine street, the stealth climb and photo shoot captured with a go pro. in a written statement, the building says the illegal trespass of our landmark tower was a dangerous act and we will continue to protect our the case is ongoing. but even more serious are the a so-called rooftopper was killed last december when he fell from scaffolding at the four seasons hotel, reportedly there to take pictures. mc.

new york city, with some pretty heavy downpours right now, unexpected if you ask me. what we see currently, temperatures hovering around 50 degrees. checking in on the rain gauge and what people are reporting, pleasant valley now approaching half an inch of rain. manchester township in new jersey, half an inch of rain. poughkeepsie, you know, 0.37, so almost 0.4. i think these rainfall totals, by the time you get to monday morning, are going to be much more impressive than we initially first thought. right now, looking out over the city, there's a light rain falling in manhattan. 46 right now. 58 was your high. 8 degrees colder than it should be this time of the year. there are passing showers out there right now for the areas, again, new york city and south. bigger downpours north of the area. it's all tapering off, anywhere between midnight and 3:00 a.m. saturday, some peeks of sun. not a perfect day for anybody. some peeks of sun, more clouds for others. not as cool as it was today. then downright cold and soggy on sunday.

still some clouds out there. sun and cloud mix. sunday, soggy and cold, only 52 degrees. now, here's the wet weather. again, new york city and south, very light sprinkle, light shower here or there. westchester, putnam county, into dutchess county, this tail goes right through fairfield county out to the east end of long island. wherever you see the red or orange, heavy downpours out there. bigger picture shows you that is your air mass for saturday. sun and cloud mix. don't see a lot of wet weather. i see the wet weather right there and i see it for sunday. if i show you how it looks on future cast, it all dies down overnight. here's 8:30 in the morning, sun and cloud mix i'm talking about. this is the better portion of your weekend. then you get into the afternoon hours, 4:00 p.m. notice how it's brighter east, cloudier west and to the north. northern areas could even see a sprinkle possible. then get ready for sunday. look at this picture. it rolls in here at 9:00 a.m. clouds throughout your day on sunday and to the evening, rain chance is with you. some of that could be heavy. right now, the new model numbers are in.

between 1 to 2 inches of rain for our area and, again, we need that rain. so you get to monday, looking at 59 degrees. still a chance for wet weather, so you still add to the rain bucket there. tuesday right now, looking like the best day of next week, around 63 degrees. sort of partly sunny skies. every other day, i think there's a rain chance. >> wow. at least it's friday. >> typical, guys. >> yes. >> thank you, lonnie. an update on an unusual confrontation. a man was punched in the face by an attacker who said it's because you look like shia labeouf. >> days later, the man heard from shia labeouf himself. since the attack, mario got a call from shia labeouf. he offered him some soup. >> soup. >> manhattan chowder, maybe? i don't know.

yeah, well, he wasn't done. that's his second rbi of the inning. it's now 8-0 mets. finally cespedes puts the icing on the cake with a grand slam homer. the mets score franchise record 12 runs in the third, cespedes drove in six of them, also a mets record. steven matz gets the win, 13-1, the final from citi field. yankees-red sox doesn't carry the juice it once did, but still exciting when the two teams get together. boston near the top of the division. the yankees, rock bottom. speaking of rock bottom, alex rodriguez barely grazing the mendoza line these days, but went 3-for-3 and a homer, going yard. more like a country mile. a-rod's fourth of the year. tanaka dealing in the seventh with a 2-0 lead, but pitch count hovering around 100 for the night. 99th would be the last. bradley drives in two, also knocking tanaka out of the game. hand it over to the best bullpen in baseball, right? maybe they will stop giving
