good morning. 6:00 a.m., sunday, may 1. >> happy to have you with us. >> i'm andrea grymes. the top stories are ahead. first vanessa murdock has a look at the rainy forecast. >> but cindy brightens the forecast. >> yes. we love to have her with us. it is going to be a rainy weekend. how long does the rain last? beyond today. let's get to the forecast. first we start with the vortex satellite and radar picture. light rain in the western fringes of new jersey. for the next two hours, i would say all of us will be getting light rain and then it will transition into moderate rain at times. lasting pretty much for the entirety of the day. we may see breaks late this afternoon, throughout the evening and overnight. as far as temperatures, it 50 in the city. and 46 in andover. hamptons, 39.

his race on his own block. >> in these moments leading up to the assault, you can see the suspects walking along 10 street wednesday afternoon. this man pulls out a metal pipe and charges toward the 19-year- old. the nypd says one of the teenagers punched the victim and the two others threatened him with a metal pipe and that -- bat and yelling, "isis". >> a protruding lump came out of his head. >> the victim's father says the damage done was more than skin deep. >> right now he is traumatized. a guy punching him and another guy running with a pipe and screaming racist remarks -- he is pretty, tries to -- he is pretty traumatized.

to a end. garcia came walking up at the same time. >> they took a swing with the pipe. he moved out of the way. he made his way over to me. that is when they ran. >> police are still looking at this -- looking for the three suspects that ran away in this case. magdalena doris, cbs2 news. >> thank you. a student said she was broke -- groped by a man on campus. police have released this video of the suspect. he is identified as miguel -- the student said she was approached in the bathroom in the social and behavioral sciences room. she said she managed to push the man away and ran. police say they have increased patrols. two tourists ended up in handcuffs after police say they were caught trespassing on the brooklyn bridge.

on a beam around 6:00 yesterday morning. they reportedly told officers they wanted to take pictures of the sunrise. over the past few years, there have been a number of tourists arrested for trespassing on the bridge including german artists that swapped american flags on the bridge. a raging fire on fire island. flames is so high they were visible from the long island mainland. a vacant home burned. another couple of houses sustained damage. the fire call came in last night around 8:30 p.m. no injuries reported. earlier the coast guard put out a boat fire on long island. flames destroyed a 26-foot boat around 10:30 a.m. saturday morning. the boat was towed away so it would not burn other boats. two people on board escaped injury when he jumped into the water. an update on labor issues in new jersey transit.

spokeswoman, two of the unions involved taff narrowly rejected a proposed contract. the unions represent conductive and locomotive engineers. a cooling off period goes into effect meaning there will not be a strike or a lockout during a 60 day period. negotiations can resume at any time. new jersey transit says 14 other unions modified contracts by significant margins. and they are now in effect. a commuter alert. 30,000 cyclists are set -- are set to hit city streets for a tour. streets will be closed for the 42-mile challenge. closures will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. the ride starts in manhattan before moving into the bronx, back to manhattan, into queens and through brooklyn before finishing in staten island. >> too that the weather was a nicer.

>> police are looking for those three suspects who ran away from the scene. live in astoria, magdalena doris, cbs2 news. the nypd need your help trying to track down a man accused of choking a 15-year- old girl as she walked down the street. look at the surveillance video from april 11, near white plains road on east 217th street in the bronx. police say this teenager came up around her and choked her before taking off on foot. we're told the victim is okay. police say she does not know her attacker. police also in the bronx are looking for an alleged dog safe. they released surveillance images of a suspect. they say the dog's 22-year-old owner tied the animal to a pet pole and went into a store on east fordham road in the fordham section. when he came out, the dog was

friday afternoon. and a daring rescue off the coney island coast. police divers jumped into the cold atlantic ocean saving a fisherman in a kayak that started thinking. we have more from brooklyn. >> from the side of the nypd helicopter, the air and sea rescue teams spot a stranded kayaker. and a police diver dropped in and made his way over to him. the kayaker ended up popping in the 50-degree water with waves swelling four up to 6 feet after his kayak started to think about 1 mile off of coney island. >> definitely had a look of panic. he was absolutely exhausted. >> he says he was fishing and had good luck with a big catch. but police say big catch -- with a catch ended up not being so lucky. >> he said he hoped to get a nice sized fish. it pulled them quite a bit. >> as the divers were preparing to put the man in the

vanessa murdock says to expect a lot of rain. in boston, an investigation is underway into a deadly accident involving a tourist boat. they say woman on a scooter was hit by one of the vehicles which are used for sightseeing in the city. this happened near boston comments. the 29-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she later died. a passenger on the scooter is expected to be okay. nobody on the tour bus was hurt. authorities are trying to find out why two teenage girls were ejected from a whirling ride at a church carnival in el paso, texas. one of the teenagers died. and another injured. police say the teenagers were hurled from the sizzler friday evening. one girl hit a metal barricade and died a short time later at a hospital. the other victims is expected to survive. an american woman and her daughter have been rescued after spending four nice lost during a hike in new zealand. they had planned for a day of walk tuesday but became lost in

the pair from north carolina survived by staying calm and sticking together for warmth. the new zealand herald reported the two used brush, rocks to spell out the word, help. they were spotted and taken to dehydration. the woman was reportedly studying in the country. a fan of tv csi apparently learned something after viewing. and police say she used her knowledge to solve a crime. we found -- she found a woman's body near her apartment and thought she died of a drug overdose. she found bloody tissues which she kept as evidence. an autopsy later found that the woman had been raped. and dna from the bloody tissues proved crucial in finding the woman's attacker. prosecutors credit her with closing the case. happening today, a end to a circus tradition. ringling bros. and barnum & bailey circus elephants will take the final

latest on this rainy weather. >> it is going to be a very soggy end to the weekend. a movie is a good idea. what i would like to do first is check in with our weather watchers and see what they have to say. what i am seeing -- the rain is not up and running yet. but it will be. it is filling and across the region. right now we have 48 degrees on long island. david herman reporting mostly cloudy skies. no rain yet. let's see if we travel to the west and to the northwest. 43 degrees right now in berryville, new york. this system moving west, to east. and the rain will begin filling in for all of us as we progressed through sunday. let's go live outside. in the city, a few sprinkles. 50 degrees. very mild. it does not get any warmer. wind out of the east at five.

soggy and cool to finish the weekend. highs today only around 50 degrees. it will be about 70 degrees below normal. and then showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. not an all-day washout tomorrow like we anticipate today. but nonetheless, a day when you will have to be prepared with the umbrella. seasonable temperatures for the rest of the week. but it will be accompanied by several chances for wet weather. we're talking -- maybe one day where we think we will steer clear of any showers or thunderstorm activity. in the entirety of the next seven days. it has been a very dry season so far. for spring, we have gotten about two and 3/4 inches. nearly we have nine by this point in time. we're running a deficit of nearly 6 inches. here is the deal. while we have several opportunities for rain over the next several days, we will not wipe this out. however, it will make a big difference when we get this persistent day after day rain. where do we stand?

just over 11 and a half inches. normally we have over 15 and a half. for the year, the deficit is over 4 inches. we are right now -- in abnormally dry conditions. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, maybe we can fix that problem. the rain moving in will become steady. it will stick around for most of the day. i'm holding confident -- maybe holding optimistic that late this afternoon, early this evening, we will see a break. regardless, rain today. and the trend continues. a soggy sunday today. pretty much a washout. tomorrow, showers and rumbles of thunder. but not an all-day washout. as a make our way into tuesday, it remains unsettled. a low pressure system going up and along this front. and with that, more showers and maybe thunderstorms. today, soaking rain. 52 degrees. as far as totals go, most of us will get around a half inch. the totals have dropped off since yesterday.
