correspondents' dinner. cbs2 news sunday morning starts right now. . good morning. it is 7:00 a.m., sunday, may 1. i'm cindy hsu. >> i'm vanessa murdock. the top stories are ahead. first vanessa murdock has a look at a wet forecast. >> good morning. it is not there yet for many people. but it will get there. the light rain is pushing in as we speak. it will be a cloudy day. and cool as well. not perfect. but mother nature is delivering just what we need right about now. that is rain. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, you can see the light rain pushing in from west, to east. i would say, for those of you on the east end of long island, by 9:00, you will be seeing light rain. over the city, just sprinkles. 50 degrees. forty-one in ferndale.

it will not be a warm day by any stretch. temperatures today, roughly 15 degrees below normal. most of us will struggle to hit 50. in the city, we anticipate hitting 52 degrees. cloudy skies. rain for the most part all day long. the best bet of any breaks will be late this afternoon and into the early evening hours. overnight showers and storms stay in the picture. i will have the full forecast coming up. we will talk about more also about many more opportunities for rain. back to you. we begin with new information on a brutal beating of a teenager. three suspects are wanted in what is being investigated as a hate crime. >> this morning we're hearing from the father of the victim. cbs2's magdalena doris joins us live from queens where the attack happened. magdalena. >> reporter: good morning. the 19-year-old victim's family says he is doing well physically.

>> ray bisram's son was allegedly beaten by three teenagers wednesday, targeted because of his race on his own block. >> it was shocking. it happened so fast. >> in this footage of the moments leading up to the hate filled assault, you can see the suspects walking along 10 street on 34 avenue in astoria wednesday afternoon. this man pulls out a metal pipe from his sweater and charges toward the 19-year-old. the nypd says one of the teenagers punched the victim while two others threatened him with a metal pipe and bat throughout the attack in yelling "isis". garcia found his injured neighbor. >> there was a protruding lump that came out of his head. >> the victim's father says the damage done was more than skin deep. >> right now he is traumatized. a guy punching him and another guy running with a bat and metal pipe screaming racist remarks.

traumatized. >> thankfully the attack came to an abrupt end before it could escalate. get -- garcia came walking up his balked at the right time. >> they pushed him. they went to swing the pipette him. he moved out of the way. he made his way to me. when he walked to me, they ran down the block. >> the three suspects are still on the loose. the nypd hate crime task force is investigating. live in astoria, queens, cbs2 news. >> thank you. a stony brook university student said she was groped by a man on campus. now police are on the hunt for her attacker. police released this photograph. he is identified as 33-year-old miguel -- the student told police she was approached and said the bathroom in the social and behavioral sciences room and groped. she said she managed to push the man away and run from the bathroom. university police say they have increased patrol.

handcuffs after police say they were caught trespassing on the brooklyn bridge. police say the men were walking on a beam around 6:00 yesterday morning. they reportedly told officers they wanted to take pictures of the sunrise. over the past few years, there have been a number of tourists arrested for trespassing on the bridge including a german artist who swapped american flags on the bridge. a raging fire on fire island. flames so high they were visible from the long island mainland. a vacant home burned and was nearly destroyed. two adjacent houses also sustained damage. this happened in the fair harbor section. the fire call came in around 8:30 p.m. last night. no injuries reported. earlier the post -- the coast guard put out a boat fire on long island. flames destroyed the 26-foot boat around 10:30 a.m. saturday morning. the boat was towed away so it would not burn other boats along the dock. the two people on board escaped

an update on labor issues at new jersey transit. according to an agency spokeswoman, two of the unions involved have narrowly rejected a new proposed contract. the unions are present conductors and locomotive engineers. a cooling off period now goes into effect meaning there will not be a strike or lockout during the 60 day period. negotiations can resume at any time. new jersey transit says all 14 other unions ratified contracts by significant margins. and a new contract is in effect. a commuter alert. 30,000 cyclists are said to hit city streets today for the annual five boroughs bike tour. streets all over the city will be closed for the -- for the 42-mile challenge. closures will start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. the ride starts in manhattan before moving up to the bronx, back to manhattan, into queens, down for brooklyn -- before finishing at staten island.

first convention ballot because donald trump won the state's primary. if there is more than one ballot, many of those delegates will be loyal to ted cruz. indiana hold its primary tuesday. it is considered key in determining whether donald trump can clinch the nomination before the convention. bernie sanders and ted cruz will both be making appearances on cbs2's face the nation this morning at 10:30 a.m. we will get a preview when we speak to john dickerson coming up at 8:00. meanwhile the current president enjoyed his last appearance on one of washington's premier events. less than he attended his final white house correspondents' dinner. the commander in chief did some standup comedy. >> i do apologize. i know i was a little late tonight. i was running on cpt. a woman and her four great grandchildren are among those killed. our exclusive forecast is up. vanessa murdock is here. we're getting a little bit of rain. >> i would think most of us get about a half inch come up to 1 inch of rain. we do need this in this section of the country. let's go live outside. it is a gray start to the day. looking at the broadcast center sign. but we do need the rain. it is sunday. hopefully you have some stuff indoors you have planned. if you you're going out on the marc anthony -- going out on the five boroughs bike tour. headlines -- a washout today. temperature right now, as warm as it will get. most of us only getting up to 50 degrees. we expect rain for much of the day. i will say, late this afternoon, early this evening, i'm holding out hope for some

and enjoy. but of course the ground will be wet. mild and showers tomorrow. maybe a thunderstorm. in the 60s to start the work week. we will stay in the 60s throughout the next several days. but it will be very unsettled. as of right now, wednesday is the only day that we do not have showers on the board in the forecast. something to keep in mind. looking at a seven-day -- not looking at a seven-day washout. but high-pressure dominating. normal high, 67. 15 degrees below normal. the sunset is this evening at 753. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, you can see that what weather rolling in. notice the colors. it is green. which is good.

you see the pockets of moderate and heavy rainfall. that could arise. we will have pockets of that as we go through the day. it will not be an all-day downpour. just an all-day steady light rain. the bigger picture is this. low-pressure tracking in from the midsection of the country. that will continue to play gustus -- plagued us. this is what it looks like on the futurecast model. steady rain this morning. as we go into the afternoon and early evening, we start to see breaks west of the city. that trend continues. overnight, showers and maybe a thunderstorm. tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies. showers, thunderstorms are possible. but not an all-day washout. as we anticipate sunday. as a make our way into tuesday, the unsettled pattern persists. total rainfall today through tomorrow -- talking most of us getting about a half inch up to 1 inch in isolated spots. as far as highs today, very

>> thank you for being here. tell us -- what are some of the biggest trends you are seeing right now this year. >> the biggest trend of this year is what we are calling the uber effect. it is the golden rule of new york city real estate -- which is, location is everything. it is just not as significant. you don't need to be as close to the subway. there are alternative ways to get to work. so uber, lyft, they literally allow you the opportunity to ride share in the morning -- for just a little more than what you would pay for for public transportation. other neighborhoods. >> the neighborhood boundaries have expanded. coming. >> we will talk about that in a minute. first i want to start with -- we have several tips when you are looking for a place. the first thing is, do your homework. explain that. >> the most important thing is to be prepared. you have such amazing resources these days online.

you can really know what the seller paid for something -- which you are -- which they sold for. the information is there. just make sure you use the online resource to know what is going on. >> and find your squad. >> your squad basically means that it takes a village to get a homes sold. it is not just you, your friends and your agent. the information is online. you still need a lender. you need a real estate attorney. they are the ones that go through all the fine details of the contract, that will protect you when you are a homeowner. a lender set the parameters. so you want to talk to them at the beginning and not wait until you are already in the process and have found a home. >> you need to find people that are trustworthy. >> and you want to make sure they are all working together. an added bonus is that when you make an offer, a seller will perceive your offer to be stronger if you present your offer with attorney information

to get your priorities straight. >> priorities is basically the ability -- to differentiate between a need and a once. often times you are buying a home with a spouse, or family member. make sure all the priorities are on the table. just differentiate between what is a want and a preference. what is a must-have -- a dealbreaker. sometimes they call them nonnegotiable's. >> and this means -- to explore. window shop. >> which is what a lot of people do. >> you can do that online. go hang out in the neighborhood. go to a restaurant or supermarket. >> and then the first don't is to don't get hung up on locations. >> a big trend again was -- the uber effect. so yes, you can have everything in an instant. so many apps are promising things in under one hour.

video from april 11 near white plains road on 217th street in the bronx. police say this man came up behind a teenager, wrapped his hands around her neck and choked her before taking off on foot. we're told the victim is okay. police say she does not know her attacker. police in the runs are also looking for an alleged dogs east. they just released surveillance images of the suspect. they say the dog's 22-year-old owner tied the animal to a pet pole and went into a store on fordham road. gone. this happened around 3:30 p.m. friday afternoon. police divers make a island coast. atlantic ocean saving a fisherman in a kayak that started thinking. we have more from brooklyn. >> from the side of the nypd helicopter, the air and sea rescue team spot a stranded kayaker. a police diver made his way over to danny aimes.

the 50-degree water with waves swelling four up to 6 feet after his kayak started to think about a mile off of coding island -- started to sink about a mile off coney island. >> he was fishing and said he had good luck with a big catch. but police say the catch ended up not being so lucky. >> he said he actually cooked a nice sized fish. and it pulled him quite a bit. >> as divers were preparing to bring the man into the helicopter, the harbor universal arrived. they pulled him on board taking him to shore along with his kayak. rescuers say his life vest was his first savior. >> he was prepared but not to sink. >> danny aimes is back home and says he is grateful to the nypd. >> he and his family say he is feeling better and even went to a party last night. a former top aide for governor andrew cuomo is

in connection to the buffalo billion project. that is an economic development program spearheaded by the governor. the manhattan u.s. attorney's office probe reportedly will focus on whether joseph percoco failed to report potential conflicts of interest on dozens of dollars he received from outside companies. that was well doing business with the state. the governor's office issued a statement saying "they take violations of the public trust seriously". a manhattan district attorney cyrus vance made his first public appearance since he issued subpoenas to city hall in mayor bill de blasio's fundraising investigation. cyrus vance hosted the second annual clean slate even on though -- on the lower eastside which gives new yorkers from all five boroughs a chance to resolve outstanding warrants without fear of arrest. but it is only for low-level offenses. cyrus vance refused to comment on the bill de blasio investigation. city council will soon vote on a controversial bill

happening today, a end to a circus tradition. ringling brothers and barnum. ringling bros. and barnum & bailey circus elephants will take their final lap around the ring. they are being retired to a conservation center in florida. they said it was in the best comes after many years of criticism from animal rights activists. nissan is recalling nearly 4 million vehicles because of airbag problems. the move affects many of the until 2017. including the maxima and pathfinder. a company spokesperson says the passenger seat airbag may not deploy if the center does not detect an adult in the seats. the sun is also recalling nearly 600,000 nissan suntrust because of the child restraint system causing airbags to inflate when they should not.

uber has settled a discrimination lawsuit over service animals. the company has agreed to make sure drivers understand their legal obligations to transport people with service animals. under the settlement, uber has agreed to pay the national federation of the blind $225,000 over a three-year period. federal law requires taxis and other private transportation passenger's service animal. the powerball jackpot is $348 million. nobody took home the grand prize in last night's drawing. the jackpot is expected to get even bigger by the next drawing which is wednesday. >> i need that. >> me too. >> i'm very excited. i'm playing. we all have to negotiate every once in a while. what is the best deal?

again, wednesday, the only day without the suggestion that we will be dealing with the rain. as far as the month goes, it has been a very dry month. we have gone down as the tenth driest april on record. now we're entering into may with a deficit of about 3 inches. looking at the deficit for the year, it is a little different. here we are. the tenth driest april on record with 1.61 inches of rain for the entire month. may is starting off very differently. starting today, persisting throughout the week, -- by the end of the week, we will have more than 1.61 inches in the buckets already. today, maybe a half inch up to one event -- up to 1 inch. some heavier stuff could happen later on. overnight, showers and thunderstorms possible. this system will continue to plague us through the day tuesday. not a washout tuesday.
