and thunderstorms. unsettled weather is moving in for the weekend. let's take a look. here are our temperatures. 74 degrees in central park. 63 for monticello. 69 in somerville, new jersey. dew points in the 60s across the board. close to 70s in some locations. when we approach 70 we consider that to be sticky -- typically -- entopic county right now. poised to move in to new jersey. here's your hour by hour forecast. we are expecting a high temperature today, about 84 degrees. when you factor in the humidity, it will feel more like 89 degrees. we have lots of clouds. we are expecting some showers and thunderstorms. i'll have more about that coming up in your full forecast. for now i'll send it back to you. >> thank you. police say a man on a

in the way. >> investigators say he's burglarized several apartments in midtown. cbs 2's ali boaman joins us live. >> reporter: the man carried out jewelry and computers. authorities are releasing surveillance photos. take a look at the man authorities are searching for on crutches. this burglar took the elevator on tuesday, july 26th whe broke into three apartments. it's not clear whether the man really needed the crutches or just using them to appear unsuspecting. some time between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. he broke into three different apartments and walked out with two computer, four pairs of earrings, a gold bracelet, diamond necklace and rolex watch. the building does not have a doorman. residents tell us people slip

recognizes him and gives police a call. >> ali, thank you. government health officials are tracking the zika virus in florida. the state has become the first in the u.s. where mosquitoes are spreading the virus. you need to protect yourself against mosquito bites. >> reporter: four people in our state -- >> four people in our state likely have the zika virus as a result of a mosquito bite. >> reporter: the sent shutters across the country. infected mosquitoes in the u.s. have transmitted the zika virus to humans. being a sprayed with pesticides. mosquitoes being tested and blood donations have been stopped. until now the almost 1700 cases were virtually all travel related. >> i'm almost certain we're going to see more. >> reporter: dr. anthony foucci. >> i'm infected, a mosquito

couple of days, bites you. if i'm infected, there's a chance, not 100%, but a chance you'll get infected. >> reporter: he says 80% of zika symptoms won't show any symptoms. the other 20% may have a fever, rash, joint or muscle pain, pink eye and a headache lasting about a week. pregnant women can transmit zika to their fetus, birth defects. muscle weakness, paralysis. new york's deputy mayor for health says the zika-carrying mosquito is a different species here. >> we are cautiously optimistic that our mosquito is not going to become an effective transmission vehicle for zika virus. >> reporter: dr. max gomez says use bug spray and clean up standing water. >> i don't think people need to panic. this is something to keep an eye on.

city will spray pesticides to kill adult mosquitoes that could carry zika or the west nile virus in parts of queens and staten island. if you're thinking of heading to miami, there is no travel advisory yet. more information on the west nile virus on long island. 12 mosquito samples tested positive for the virus. the samples were collected last week in about a dozen towns. officials say two birds tested positive. so far positive. officials are advising residents to remove standing water around their homes. new this morning, police are searching for a peeping tom in the bronx. the nypd released surveillance video of the suspect. just after midnight on thursday he peered through the window of a home on black rock avenue near parkchester. several people were home at the time. investigators say he touched him sexually while looking through the windows. four people are hospitalized after a two car

it happened just after 2:00 on west 17 2nd street. one person is in serious condition after being ejected from one of the vehicles. no word on what caused the crash. drivers are hoping for a smoother ride today, getting in and out of laguardia airport after issues last night. chopper 2 flew over the grand central parkway showing bumper to bumper traffic during the evening commute. the slow downs were mainly at the entrance to the airport. some drivers were stuck traffic for more than an hour. some griped that traffic agents were nowhere to be found. >> they should have a couple of traffic cops or traffic somebody, there's nobody directing any traffic up there. no one. >> it was a nightmare. three lanes that come into the airport are bumper to bumper. >> we reached out to the port authority of new york and new jersey for comment but have not heard back. people in one new jersey town are on alert after a

after some sort of animal bit him repeatedly at a park in ocean county on wednesday. the victim had been walking his dog. the attack was unprovoked. it's unclear whether the other animal was a dog or coyote. drivers in new jersey are hoping for shorter lines at the department of motor vehicles. the commission decided to add extra staff after three computer glitches this week forced people to wait in long lines. computers for about half an hour. offices will be open until 1:00 today. time is 6:07. lost in the woods with only rain water to drink. >> i had resolved the fact that i was going to die. >> two days later these national guardsmen came to her rescue. how they managed to find her. a rescue at sea. some dramatic video of police officers saving a man on the jersey shore. plus this. horrible.

showers and potentially thunderstorms moving through and continuing with some unsettled weather sunday an and then again as we head into early monday morning. bottom line is bring the umbrella or whatever rain gear you prefer. sort of keep it handy. you may need it at any given point through the next couple of days. we start to get relief on tuesday. wednesday things improve inch of rain on this model, at least, to three inches in the heaviest spots. that's for monticello. expect this to change a bit. this is now through monday morning. this is all the rain combined. for most of us though it is going to be a good little addition to the rain bucket. i think most of us can probably count on at least getting an inch out of the weekend into monday. so for today the clouds increase, we will see showers and storms.

pasta maker barilla is in hot water after being accused of underfilling pasta boxes. a lawsuit filed in new york district court alleges barilla deceptively sells three types of elbow pasta. some boxes contain as much as 25% less pasta. >> well, i mean, should be getting what you pay for, i guess; right? if they say had is how much is in the box or you really can't see it so are they tryi deceive you? >> barilla tells cbs 2 they do not comment on pending litigation but they remain confident in the quality of their products. there's no word on how much money the lawsuit is seeking. speaking of food, summer melons are making a comeback. tony tantillo. >> taste of the da i is going to be casaba melons. they are a mixed melon. it's called mixed melon.

they almost look like a gourd. they've got these rough edges. but let me tell you, they're wonderful. when you cut these open, the sugar is out of this world. even though they look like they could stay around for a while, they don't. as a matter of fact, the shelf life on these melons because the sugar content is so high is not as long as others. when you buy them, make sure the colors match all the way around, heavy for it throw them on the counter, two or three days. four days at the most. or you can put them in the fridge. forget about it, leave it on the counter. some people like to store them in the fridge. sometimes that can hurt the flavor and the silkiness of the texture of this melon. when you cut them open on the inside, that's what they look

bold burglaries in midtown. police say this man broke into several apartments within five hours and took off with electronics and expensive jewelry, all while on crutches and wearing a medical boot. a book battle on the upper west side. it's not illegal to sell them, so why were police confiscating them? showers and storms could interrupt your plans for this evening. good evening -- >> morning. >> did >> yes. >> sorry. robbery spree in midtown. >> now police are hoping to track him down before he strikes again. cbs 2's ali bowman joins us live with the details. >> reporter: computers, diamonds and gold, that's what police say one man stole from this building and it appears he did it with a handicap. take a look at some surveillance to photos authorities are searching for. this particular took the elevator on tuesday, july 26th apartments. police say some time between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. he stole two computers, four pairs of earrings, a gold bracelet, diamond necklace and a rolex watch. people who do not live in here tend to slip in and out all the time. it's unclear whether the man needed the crutches or was using them to appear unsuspecting. anyone with information is

ali bowman, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. an update on the man hunt for the suspect in a child luring case in queens. police have released these sketches. they say the man lured a young girl with special needs into his car thursday in richmond hill while she waited for the summer school bus. police say he told the 10-year- old he was a relative. after about an hour police say the man dropped the girl back off near her school unharmed. are on high alert after a homeowner reports property damage. look at this video. it shows someone getting out of a car and busting a mailbox into pieces with a baseball bat. it happened thursday night in pearl river. orangetown police say it's the only official complaint. several people on social media say it's also happened to them. crews rushed to rescue a man stranded in the water after

called thursday night. within minutes they spotted the 21-year-old victim in the water. two divers with a basket were immediately lowered to pull the victim inside. he was taken to the hospital for observation. a boater was rescued after he was knocked overboard by a wave. a 911 call alerted the police marine bureau to an empty boat. they found 21-year-old justin underwood about a mile away. water about 90 minutes. says he was thrown overboard while checking his phone for his satellite position. a new york state lawmaker wants to ban certain registered sex offenders from playing the game pokemon go. announced legislation yesterday. the popular smartphone game could be exploited by sexual predators. the game encourages people to walk around outside searching for pokemon. battle over books has

video taken earlier this month shows police backing up one vendor's books even though it's legal to sell them on the street. police say some vendors have left the books out overnight. >> fundamental issue is that there's a law in the books that says if you're going to sell something, books or anything, you can't leave the table unattended. >> the books were eventually returned to the vendor who was also given a court summons. police were responding to complaints by residents. imagine going from staten island straight to midtown. plans for a new ferry stop are under construction. in a letter to the department of transportation, staten island president suggested the terminal as a new spot. the d.o.t. says existing ferry vessels cannot dock at that terminal but the department will work to explore the proposal. time now is 6:34. a new beginning several years after tragedy.

taking a live look outside on this saturday morning from our camera on top of the empire state building. looks like a pretty start to the weekend. but elise says we will have some rain coming later today. she'll have the full forecast coming up. pope francis made a somber and silent stop in poland. the pope visited the former nazi death camp yesterday. he stopped to pray, sitting silently at one point for about 15 minutes. the pope underground cell where he began sat silently and prayed. the cell was where a catholic priest was killed after offering his life to save a polish man. he signed a commemorative book. he wrote quote, lord forgive us for so much cruelty. a newly rebuilt sandy hook elementary school set to welcome students next month, nearly four years after the shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead. the $50 million facility

stationed at the school, which includes video surveillance and bullet proof windows and doors. the new school sits adjacent to the side of the old building which has been demolished. a memorial is being planned for the site. we have a consumer alert this morning for parents. recalling more than 39,000 car seats. it involves the convertible car seat. the company says in a crash the seats can transmit too much force to a child's manufactured from january 2009 to june of 2016. identity thieves have come up with a new scheme. they're now taking over mobile phone accounts. cbs 2's julie watts on how they're doing it. >> my dad, my sister and my husband, their phones stopped working. >> reporter: when lindsey called, she discovered a thief had hijacked her family's account. >> somebody in nebraska had walked into a best buy and

>> reporter: three iphone 6 pluses worth about $800 billed to her account. the ftc has received thousands of similar complaints from i a cross the country. impacting all four major carriers. the chief technology officer a victim herself. the growing problem of cell phone hijacking extends far beyond the inconvenience of losing phone service. when crooks transfer your number to the new phones, they may gain access to your critical accounts. >> facebook, google, bank of america, wells fargo, they're using your cell phone as a secondary measure to prove who you say you are. >> reporter: technology writer dan gooden is talking about two factor authentication. a security measure that confirms account passwords. it assumes a person who steals your password doesn't also have access to your phone. >> sudden will i your phone stops working and i now have a phone connected to your

your texts. for all practical purposes i am now you. >> reporter: at&t says its stores require a photo i.d. and the last four digits of your social before allowing an upgrade or access to an account. lindsey says someone used a fake i.d. with her name. after switching out sim cards, her family did get service back and at&t covered the fraudulent that phone companies need to do more to prevent cell phone hijacking. >> i just don't want this to happen to o'people. >> both best buy and at&t told us they require stores and third party sellers to check and verify customers i.d.s before completing a transaction. it can be a challenge. time now is 6:41. if you want to do anything outside, should probably get a

let's head over to elise finch. she's going to explain why; right? >> so interesting sort of mix today. temperatures are down but the humidity is up. so dew points are up. so it's feeling sticky out there. that will continue to be the case as we head throughout the day. we are expecting showers and thunderstorms. so let's check in with some of our weather watchers to see what kinds of conditions people are reporting this morning as we start down the jersey shore. this is walter in bradley beach. it's 71 degrees. his comment, good morning. the day is starting out it was a nice sunrise. hopefully people had a chance to enjoy it. bruce is in northimportant. had it is 69 degrees. a day with mixed conditions is okay. it's a good way to think of it. another good way is to remember we do need the rain. as we head into the lower hudson valley. this is adam in middletown. cool but dry, probably not for long. >> definitely not for long. >> we know the humidity is creeping up.

things look good so far this morning. and you can see a little bit of that blue sky happening. but we'll call it partly cloudy. 74 degrees. winds out of the northeast. here's what you can expect today. stray showers are possible this morning. we'll see more widespread shower activity later in the day. locally heavy downpours are going to be possible, especially with the thunderstorm cells and things remain unsettled tonight. they remain unsettled all weekend long. we need the rain, here's the drought monitor. we have a moderate drought for most of the area. severe drought as we head to su if, folk county. here's where we stand for the year. we've received 23.6 inches. at this point during the year we'd be approaching 29 inches. our deficit, nearly 5 inches.
