. >> be quashed -- be cautious in ocean county. under a flash flood watch. you will see the bright green. as you make your way into somerset county. there is a flood warning at the millstone river. a lot going on today. the rain will be the biggest culprit. and as we move on, to continue to look like this on the satellite and radar picture. plenty of clouds. a few breaks of sunshine. a lot of rain for some of us. not all of us. this is ocean county. it has been raining for a little more than three hours. and lacey seems to be getting the worst of it. as you can see. this is the big trouble spot with localized flooding. hour by hour today, 78 by noon. it will feel like 83.

later this afternoon. cloud cover. showers and storms. flash flooding possible. all of that today. i will have the full forecast coming up. back to you. >> thank you. following developing stories in manhattan. police are searching for a man who they say tried to rape a woman. it happened at greenwich village right near nyu. cbs2's magdalena doris joins us this morning with more on the story. >> police say the young woman s tried to strike up a conversation. that is when he attacked her, grabbing her from behind. and then she fought back. >> the washington square park, the city landmark, draws attention anytime of day. and with crowd, often comes a feeling of security. >> there are people walking around no matter what time of the day it is. >> police say just a few

morning, a 20-year-old woman was a trap -- was approached by a man who try to strike up a conversation. >> walking along 5 avenue, the suspect grabbed the victim from behind and sexually assaulted her. police said she fought the attacker off. the incident has other women looking for more protection. >> i would prefer outside. >> the woman described the attacker as a man, 5-foot, 6 inches, with a medium build. investigators said she could not get a clearer look at his face because he was wearing a hat. >> police say the victim refused medical attention. they are asking anyone with information on the assault to give them a call. live in greenwich village, magdalena doris, cbs2 news. new video this morning. police say it shows a man opening fire in queens.

when a man fired at a man on a bicycle. and then the jeep sped away. it happen on 132nd in flushing. nobody was hurt. but police are searching for both men. and the search is on for two men who police say were caught on camera still a woman's purse. investigators say surveillance video shows the man standing next to a woman at a cafi in flushing. before grabbing the purse off the counter and taking of. standing nearby acting as a lookout. the woman says there was $200 cash in the purse. and another round of storms today. after yesterday's wet weather. and some parking lots look more like a pond yesterday. the pedestrian, was also overflowing with water. the transit used buses to shuttle passengers from one side of the station to the other. train service was not affected.

left some drivers stranded. in plainsboro, it was high tide in some areas. an apartment building parking lot looked more like a lake after the downpour. the water filled the streets in north brunswick as rain ran off the rooftops. the flooding is not just affecting our area. terms in baltimore had to rescue people trapped inside of vehicles after parts of the road collapse. we will be back with another check of the forecast in a few minutes. a special into yes the investigation team is te ntsb investigation team is excited to go to texas to investigate the hot air balloon disaster. >> brian conybeare has more. >> this is a deflated hot air balloon in a field outside of texas after a terrible crash that killed 16 people. the basket caught fire and plunged to the ground. right below high-voltage power lines. >> it sounded like a gun went

fireball. >> they believe the balloon somehow hit the high-voltage wires. >> i think the pop that i heard was the balloon connecting to the lines. >> the group was with the, heart of texas, balloon rides. investigators from the ntsb and the fbi rushed to the remote seen 30 miles south of austin. >> you only get one chance at it. >> two years air balloon hit power lines in virginia. about the same time, safety investigators recommended that the faa conduct more oversight on balloon operators due to concerns over these accidents. the faa rejected the recommendation. >> he is the balloon advisor at the new jersey -- new jersey festival of ballooning. he has flown 3400 hours and balloons and says the electric lines are something you have to

rallied for the democrats in his hometown of pittsburgh. >> we're going to try to get those who have been successful, to help us find what will make america even more successful. >> donald trump is not campaigning this weekend. but he is planning his own trip to ohio and pennsylvania this week. the republican nominee did respond to claims that he "sacrificed nothing for his country". >> the comment was made by the father of a fallen muslim national convention. >> i think i have made a lot of sacrifices. i have worked very hard. i have created thousands and thousands of jobs. sands and >> in a statement yesterday, donald trump called the captain of the fallen soldier, a hero to our country and says we should honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe. meanwhile, the nfl is caught up with a debate debacle. donald trump says hillary clinton is trying to rig the debates by scheduling two of them opposite nfl games.

letter from the nfl complaining that of a dates are ridiculous. but the nfl denies sending the republican nominee any letter. the dates were selected last september by the nonpartisan commission on presidential debates. time to see what is coming up this morning on face the nation. >> john dickerson joins us live from washington with a preview. good morning. >> good morning. we're going to talk about the debate back and forth as well as the general election which is underway. the balloon drops have ap about his support for hillary clinton and whether he can transfer that to his supporters. we will have a conversation with the campaign manager for the trump campaign. we will ask him about the candidate's comments and also where they are on the debate question. and we will have that conversation as well with the chairman of the republican national committee. and as always, at the end, we will have our political roundtable to put all of the news of last week into some context and give us a sense of where we are headed now.

where do you see -- after being at both of them -- what were some of the high points for the republicans and democrats and where do they go from here? >> the high point for republicans would have been donald trump's speech. there is a lot of criticism from the left about the speech. a republicans -- for the trump campaign -- they were not the same thing at the moment. for the trump campaign, they feel like they spoke to supporters. it is really a different vision of america. as opposed to the ne democrats think that they put on a great four day show. one of the debates we will see is -- what turf the campaign will be fought on. will it be fought the way the republicans see it -- or the way the democrats see it? it is a question of how you see the world more than what your solutions are for fixing the problems. and so, that is the first to battle. it is a short sprint until the debate. it feels like -- 100 days is

politics. >> it will go by really quick. >> i was wondering -- how much bernie sanders will be doing as we move forward. >> he says he will be doing a lot. he says he will be doing everything he can. what does that really mean? will he be out campaigning? where will he be campaigning? will be he beat -- will he be telling his supporters not just to not vote for donald trump but to work and vote for hillary clinton? we will get a sense of that today n of that as he goes out on the campaign trail. will he be out there working for hillary clinton? or trying to maintain his movement? he is still an independent. he is not a democrat. and so what is the difference there? will he be seen as just another arm of the clinton campaign? >> we look forward to your conversation and the rest of your broadcast. thanks for checking in with us. you can catch jon in a full hour of face the nation this morning

you to a new jersey woman who was rescued by four national guardsmen after making a wrong turn and making -- and getting stranded in the woods. we're hearing from the soldiers that saved her life. >> she said she thought she was going to die. she was preparing to die. >> she actually gave up. >> members of the massachusetts army national guard on a training mission to new jersey came face-to-face with a real-life rescue mission. th haskins slumped over in the backseat of her car unconscious. she says she took a wrong term last -- a wrong turn last saturday heading to baltimore. >> the car was stuck in deep sand. >> she ended up on a remote trail in the middle of the woods. her cell phone was dead. she was forced to drink rainwater from thunderstorms to survive. >> i resolve the fact that i was going to die. >> on monday afternoon, she says she blacked out.

>> she was not responding. >> they rushed back to their training area and brought back two medics that put her on oxygen. >> i came to an there were these men's faces. it was the best thing that ever happened. >> all four of these guardsmen say it is not every day they get to save a person's life, not much a stranded elderly woman. they say it was an experience they will never forget. >> this is part of the reason i joined the it feels great to get her back to her family. >> jeanette haskins says her cat ran away during the ordeal and she still cannot find him. as for the soldiers, guard commanders say they will likely receive the metal for their actions. let's get a check of the forecast with meteorologist vanessa murdock. it is one of those days were you want to stay indoors obviously. >> you're probably better off doing so. we will probably be dealing with flash flooding which could

where it is not going to be bright and beautiful. it is going to be muggy and potentially drenching out there. we have some slow-moving storms already causing problems this morning. let's take you live outside. raindrops falling on the camera lens. 75 degrees. east, southeast wind at 11. the report out of central park. more showers and storms all of us. a sickly a carbon copy of yesterday. more localized flooding. very muggy will stay unsettled tomorrow. tomorrow will be a little less under the gun. but another day with showers and storms under the gun. >> these are yesterday's rainfall totals. major heavy hitters. plainsboro, nearly 6 inches. and princeton nearly 5 inches. new brunswick, 4.5 inches. central park, a significant contrast with a quarter inch. some of us will get way too --

more. some are still waiting on the rain for gardens to grow. it will be slightly below seasonable today. 80 degrees. ample cloud cover. tomorrow, 82. tuesday, 80. the humidity stays high today and tomorrow. beginning to drop off slightly as we get into tuesday. on the vortex satellite and radar picture. plenty of action out there already this morning. the worst of it making its way through ocean county. a flash flood warning in effect until 11:00 a.m. the storm has been barely ng moving. i think some have gotten over 3 inches of rain. the garden state parkway getting dumped on. this will be around for a little bit longer before it finally makes its exited. but more could certainly follow as the day progresses. flash flood warning in effect until 11:00 a.m. that is for ocean county. we have this area of low pressure right now over the ohio valley. it is making the slowest progression east. the stationary front is hanging around.

energy moving along will help drum up showers and storms today. so they will be slow-moving, causing problems. will show you what it looks like hour by hour. throughout the morning, scattered activity. this afternoon, stronger stuff again. overnight, the potential for flooding rain. tomorrow, as you make your drive into work, you could run into flooding problems on the roadways. notice how tomorrow is not looking as impressive as today. we hope that trend will continue as a make our way tuesday. the situation gets even better. we began to dry out late tuesday. if you attempt the beach today, here is what you need to know. a lightning risk is moderate. direct-current risk is moderate. the uv index is five. that is the best information about the breach -- about the beach forecast. depending upon where you are, you may stay completely dry. or you could get dumped on at the beach. it is 80 today across the board. muggy, showers and storms. be on the lookout for flash flooding. overnight, 72.

tomorrow, 82. showers and storms again. tuesday, we get some late reeks of sunshine. a high of 80. humidity levels begin to drop off of it. wednesday, is the pic of the week. eighty-three and mostly sunny. a little warmer thursday with a ton of sunshine. friday and saturday, pushing 90. storms late on friday and saturday. more unsettled weather again. >> thank you. someone in new hampshire will not need to show up for work tomorrow. the powerball officials say a jackpot winning tickor in in the state. the ticket matches all six numbers. there has not been a jackpot winner since may 7. that is when a family from new jersey won a $429.6 million jackpot. the winning numbers for the powerball are 11-17-21-23-32 and the powerball number is five. these days, more people are winning the battle against cancer.

patients's balance and walking. >> we explain how dancing, especially the tango can help. >> he never considered himself much of a dancer. but after spending a few weeks in a program for cancer patients, he surprised himself. today, he is doing the tango. not long ago, he could barely walk. >> the only thing i could feel with my feet. i could not feel my toes or heels. >> he had hodgkin's lymphoma. and the chemotherapy damaged nerves in his legs and feet. >> when you lose sensation or activity and those nerves, it can affect the feedback that your system gets. so that your system is not able to control your balance. >> and peter analysis shows how loss of feeling and legs and feet can impact a patient's ability to walk there is a researchers at the ohio state university comprehensive cancer center teamed up with a premed student who saw how patients

balance. as a dance major, she came about -- he came up with a way to help by teaching them to tango. >> even five weeks of tango, we were able to decrease that lateral sway by 56%. >> when it comes to nerve damage in hands and feet or neuropathy from chemotherapy, nearly 70% of patients were affected one month after treatment. nearly one in three still have it after six months, leading many patients to undergo physical therapy. something he dreaded on cell therapy td to each and every step he took to therapy. >> the improvement was remarkable. i don't think we would have improved nearly that quickly without it. >> in addition to nerve damage, many cancer patients also experience muscle loss. doing the tango also rebuilds leg muscles and increases stamina which helps with balance. >> and i heard it is fine. >> very nice.

some of the finest felines getting ready for the broadway revival. the musical cats returns tonight. this a man who choreographed hamilton is behind this production. your original cast opened in 1982 at the theater and closed in 2000. broadway goes to the dogs. people lined up yesterday at sh barks. the 18th year for the pet adoption. the goal is to put hundreds of animals in permanent homes. the event was hosted by gloria sf on gloria stephan and founder bernadette peters. >> a lot of them getting adopted. people understand how beautiful the animal is. and it shows that there is nothing wrong with them. i cannot think of life without a pet. they give so much love. >> this year's broadway

five years ago, on any given night, you know, almost 75,000 veterans experienced homelessness. we have reduced those numbers by almost half, there are still too many veterans who still need a place to live. this project is a comprehensive rehabilitation of the center's facility here in downtown boston to create permanent supportive housing, transitional housing and service spaces, a facility that really delivers on society's commitment to people who have served in the military.

they have been getting drenched all morning long. seeing some action. now to the other flash flood warning near delaware. slow movers today. expect torrential rain to last for quite some time. not everybody will see heavy rain today. but for those that dew, expect the possibility of flash flooding. the high will be 80. not a lot of sunshine. and it will be muggy in addition to dealing with the rain. i will ha coming up. and we will talk about when the lead weather finally comes to a end. back to you. we're following a developing story this morning in manhattan. police are on the hunt for a man who tried to rape a woman walking near nyu. >> investigators say the victim was able to fight him off after his initial assault. magdalena doris joins us live from greenwich village with more. >> reporter: police say the men they are looking for --

a medium build. investigators note that she could not get a clearer look at his face because he was wearing a hat. >> police say the victims decided not to go to the hospital to get checked out. they are asking anyone with information on this attack to come forward. in greenwich village, magdalena doris, cbs2 news. new this morning, lease are searching for a man who they say tried to rape a woman inside of a church bathroom on staten island. investigators say just aft grabbed the 21-year-old by her throat at the church. they say he pushed her down while unbuckling his pants. police say she was able to give back upstairs after he tried to force himself on her a second time. the new jersey turnpike is back open at this hour after a shooting forced closures overnight. state troopers say they received a tip from or lead -- from rhode island authorities about an armed and dangerous driver.

ridgefield park. police say he refused to pull over. his car became disabled. when officers approached the car, they said they found the driver had shot himself. he is now at a medical center with life-threatening injuries. police say a man on crutches is on a burglary spree in midtown. one of the alleged victims have come forward to share her story. police say the suspect burglarized a three apartments at a building on west 56th street tuesday morning. they just released a these pictures. the building all while on crutches and wearing a medical boots. one woman told cbs2 was one of the homes -- her home was one of the homes burglarized. >> we walked in and it looks normal. we saw that my boyfriend's brand-new laptop was gone. >> the building has a part- time doorman but he was reportedly on break at the time. to a consumer alert for long island residents.

again. are company -- the power company says average electric -- electric bill will go up $10. they blame the rate increase on the cost of fuel and increase december usage. many in long beach have been having power problems with pse&g. customers say they have suffered through 20 blackouts this month can't -- lasting three up to 18 hours at a time. a murdered in my pd detective's family has a newly remodeled home -- a murdered nypd's effective home has a behind after detectives were killed in the line of duty. >> [ cheering ] >> a ribbon-cutting and sharing outside of the home, to officially unveil this spectacular insight. a top to bottom renovation, now complete on the home were fallen nypd detective rafael ramos lived with his wife and son before he was killed in the line of duty.

from a brooklyn homeless shelter to sports stardom, three sisters from bushwick are heading to houston to compete in the junior olympics. >> we spoke with the girls, the coach and the proud mother.

track club before next week's junior olympics in texas. the girls from brooklyn have high hopes for three members all from the same homeless shelter in bushwick. sisters who discovered track and field about the same time last year that they and their single mother fell on hard times. >> every time they get on the track, they amaze us. they never ran before. >> you had no idea they were athletes? >> not at all. i knew they liked to jump around around and race and act crazy like to do. >> their mother was answering phones. she fell behind on the rent. they got evicted and they ended up at a homeless shelter. the girls went to a track meat for something to do. their town was immediately recognized. >> it is easy to see raw talent. >> the 8-year-old says being the lead in the middle distance race is a form of liberation.
