it's 4:30, 68 degrees on this thursday, august 4th. another beautiful day today, sunny and warm with low humidity. we'll have traffic and weather on the 2s coming up in just a moment. but, first, a warehouse fire turns into a raging inferno in queens. the flames and smoke prompting health concerns. good morning, i'm chris wragge. >> i'm mary calvi. welco t morning. and we begin this morning with that massive fire in queens. it took several hours and hundreds of firefighters to contain the fierce flames, the thick smoke rising from the warehouse >> cbs 2's janelle burrell joins us live in suniedside queens with more. janelle. >>reporter: good morning to you, chris and mary. it certainly has been a long night for fire crews out here. you can see they still have a couple of ladders dousing some of the hot spots that remain inside of this warehouse. this is an industrial area that

teams worked to get the fire out. the massive flames lighting up the sky on 37th street in sunnyside wednesday night, more than 250 firefighters battling the raging fire as the warehouse burned. inside a flammable combination fueling the burst of flames that could be seen and smelled for miles. >> had a lot of wood, had a lot of lacquers, thinners, painters, paint in the shop spread. >> it was like a weird immense smell. it was really strong. >>reporter: the warehouse, listed as new york custom interior millwork corporation, a family-owned woodwork and interior design company. no employees were nz the building when the flames began around 7:30 p.m. it took crews four hours to get it under control. the chief urging people who live nearby to take precautions. >> close your windows.

combustion. we asked that question right away, what's burning, but we hope most of it is consumed in the fire. >>reporter: and four firefighters did suffer some minor injuries during that fire fight. as for the cause of what ignited the flames, that is still under investigation this morning. reporting live from sunnyside, queens. janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> janelle, thank you. time now 4:32. it's time for traffic and weather on the 2s. vanessa murdock is in for john this morning. hi, vanessa. >> good morning. we have another beautiful day on tap, and we are starting out, oh, so comfortably. let's take a look at temperatures. 55 in the city, 55 in summit, scarsdale this morning 62 degrees. low humidity, skies are mainly clear out there. it is beautiful to start the day. and it will stay this way. we are going to enjoy a mostly sunny thursday out there. 8:00 a.m. 70 degrees, that's where we'll be an it'll feel like 70. by noon, 79, feels like 79. so very lovely.

the murder mystery, including new evidence. >>reporter: reward posters spell out the tragic news, this 30-year-old woman was murdered and now police need help to find her killer. for those who knew karina vetrano, she was more than a face on a flyer. >> she was a great girl. she had tons of friends. she lit up the room when she walked in. >>reporter: family, friends and neighbors came together and lit candles outside of vetro lounge where she worked. she was found strangled tuesday night after going for a just a few blocks from her howard beach home near the spring creek federal land near the belt parkway. police also believe she may have been sexually assaulted. they say her body was found with her shorts and sports bra pulled down. >>reporter: police say vertrano left her home to go for a jog around 5:00 tuesday evening. the avid runner often used the unpaved trail and often ran alongside her father. this time an injury kept her at home. >> he asked her not to run this path, not without him. >>reporter: police say

stopped. her father began to worry when his phone calls to her went unanswered. >> at some point after that her father began to worry when she didn't return home. he call a member of the service, the police chief who lives nearby who then called 911. >>reporter: he helped police retrace their usual running route and pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy area about 15 feet from the path. her father discover the body. >> you can imagine his angst at that point. we found her ce ground. >>reporter: while the community continues to mourn vertrano's death, the focus shifts to finding her killer. >> i just hope they catch the animal that did it. that's all i care about right now. >> police say they'll use helicopters and infrom ared technology to search for evidence that may not be easily visible. new this morning, police have released photos that they believe say are involveed in a credit card fraud ring. the nypd says these are the latest two caught on camera

may until july. many of the victims had accounts at the ridgewood savings bank. police say eight thieves in total used the credit card information to buy over $30,000 worth of merchandise at stores in east new york and brownsville, brooklyn. also new this morning, security cameras captured clear images of three men wanted for robbing thousands of dollars from a queens business. the three allegedly broke into a restaurant supply store in astoria by cutting a hole in the window. they apparently knew what they from a lock box inside an office. the men are between 40 and 50. it happened july 26th at around 2:00 in the morning. police hope someone can identify them. we are following developing news out of london. one woman was killed an five others hurt after a man went on a stabbing spree. the attack happened in russell square which is near the british museum. a 19-year-old man was arrested after he was taken down with a taser. officials say he is now in custody in a hospital.

significant factor in this case and that is one major line of inquiry. >> police say terrorism is also a possible motive, but they are still investigating. city leaders say they're stepping up police patrols this morning as a precautionary measure. and the terror fight here at home, a u.s. law enforcement officer stands accused of trying to help isis. nicholas young, a transit police officer for washington d.c. subway system appeared in federal court yesterday. earlier agents searched his home in northern virginia. according to court papers, young bought isis purchase mobile messages accounts. he actually gave them to an undercover source. the fbi says young has been on his radar for six years. well, police are searching for a bakery burglar who's repeatedly broken into the same new jersey shop is. jared stuffed cupcakes in tota has been burglarized three times in the past four weeks. this time the thief was he clearly scene on surveillance. he got through a rear window

the owner says she feels violated. >> it's like somebody stripped you down naked and you're standing in the middle of, you know, madison square garren. >> a post plastering his face on social media has been share nearly 1,200 times. he made off with $500 in the first two break-ins. the third time the cash register was empty. scientists have started experimenting an experimental zika virus vaccine on humans. the study involves about 80 volunteers. -- the study involves ab to approve the $1.1 spending bill to fund zika programs, but lawmakers have already left for an extended recess without passing it. meanwhile, new york state is cracking down on companies trying to cash in on zika fears. seven companies are accused of advertising or selling infective insect repellants, including ultrasonic devices, patches and bracelets. people are advised to use products approved by the epa only. the centers for disease control

following ingredients, deet, piccaretan and lemon eucalyptus and a synthetic repellant. dramatic video from inside an emirates boeing 777 that crashed in dubai. that's right. cell phone video shows some passengers trying to get their suitcases yesterday before flight attendants ordered them off the plane. minutes later it caught fire. all 300 people on board escaped, including six americans, but was killed. the ntsb sent a team to dubai to help with the investigation. it is now 4:39. still ahead, outgoing police commissioner bill bratton speaks on the future of the new york police department. why he says the force will be very different under his successor james o'neill and what it means for the relationship with city hall. also ahead, a new graduation requirement for high school students that has some parents outraged this morning. how soon before students will need to pass a standardized test in order to get their

things off out there, live outside? clear skies overhead in the city, 68 degrees, calm winds, lovely. temperatures across the region, they are cool to the north, 55 degrees in monticello as well as the hamptons, 53 degrees the reading this morning. belmar starting off at 62. as we roll on through your day, temperatures will be topping out at 82 degrees, skies will be mostly sunny today, winds will be on the settled side. so looking really good overhead, and with regard to temperature right now, clear skies, your forecast today and tomorrow, but then as we make our way toward the weekend, things do begin to change. there's going to be a front approaching from the west that will bring wet weather late friday through the day on saturday. we'll also see humidity levels climb big time in that time frame. but for today and tomorrow feeling very good out there. hour by hour, here's what you can expect for today, mostly sunny skies, pretty much for the duration. yeah, a few times you'll see a few more clouds filtering on through. the suggestion of a shower is well north of the city today, but i think we generally just

thursday. tomorrow looking lovely as well. but note the clouds begin to increase late friday into saturday with that approaching front. saturday we start to see shower and storm activity, and unfortunately it looks to linger through much of the day. we're hoping it's out of here by saturday evening. sunday is looking great. for today sunshine, very pleasant, 82 degrees. winds will be out of the northeast, becoming southeasterly at about 5 to 10 miles per hour. then overnight comfortable again, 68 degrees. for your day tomorrow a little bit warmer, 84 but another crank up the heat and humidity. take a look. saturday 89, feeling like 90 plus out there, showers and storms, sticky too are, nicer for sunday, a high of 86 and mostly sunny. time now for a check on your time saver traffic with alex. >>reporter: vanessa, thank you. if you're traveling in sun, queens, we do have some changes for you. there is a serious fire under way. it has closed queens boulevard westbound between 39th street and van dam street. this also has 37th street closed now between queens boulevard and 43rd avenue. 47th avenue is a better bet if

area. one lane is also closed on the brooklyn-bound upper level of the verrazano bridge. no major delays making your way through the area quite yet, but you'll see those flashing lights. subway issues as well due to track maintenance at 75th avenue, we have jamaica-bound e and f trains running with delays. alternate side parking, it's in effect city wide. do be safe, don't text and drive. chris, over to you >> alex, thank you. if you're just waking up, here's a quick look at your morning update. the medical examiner says the 30-year-old jogger whose body was found in howard there's evidence karina vetrano may have been sexually assaulted. last night family and friends lit candles outside the restaurant where she worked. four firefighters suffered minor injuries in a warehouse fire in queens. flames tore through the new york custom interior millwork corporation in sunnyside. the fire was brought under control late last night. no word yet on how that fire started. donald trump is downplaying reports of turmoil in his campaign. he told supporters in florida his campaign is going very well and is unified. but new polls show hillary clinton opening a double-digit

police commissioner bill bratton says the force will be very different under his successor. bratton spoke to cbs 2 political reporter marcia kramer. >>reporter: when i asked police commissioner bill bratton if the department would change under his successor james o'neill, i expected him to say it would be a continuation of the bratton reign. instead -- >> actually, the department will be different in that jimmy is prepared with his neighborhood policing plan. the ability of to address the racial divide, jimmy, i think is going to have significant gains on dealing with the racial tension in this city. >>reporter: if that happens, it would be a major score with his boss, mayor de blasio who has made forming the police department one of his major initiatives, a big deal for a mayor facing a possibly bumpy re-election campaign next year, and because of that bratton said o'neill would have -- >> the resources to do it. >>reporter: while o'neill was

consider, his nickname in the department is jpo for jimmy police. he rides a harley, a motorcycle buff and he's weathered a corruption scandal. in 2008 he lost his job as commander of the narcotics division after a sting operation found officers using drugs they seized to pay off informants. o'neill wasn't involved, but he did languish for more than a decade until bratton returned to the department. ironically, he will also have to deal with an ongoing corruption probe that of several top chiefs with more reportedly on the griddle. >> these corrupt police officers cannot be allowed to continue in the police department. he needs to set that tone at the top. >>reporter: and while the neighborhood policing he favors will be important, experts say he will also be judged on how he deals with quality-of-life issues like the homeless and communities overrun with people who smoke synthetic marijuana, k2. >> it's one of the most important things that people all over the city expect and

it's 4:51. let's go. >> i'm going to go with bruno on this. >> 68 degrees. welcome back to cbs 2 news this morning. rchld and new this morning, happiest place on earth was one of the darkest because of a power outage. parts of disneyland in anaheim, california briefly lost power last night after a transformer blew in the city. generators at the park quickly kicked in, but some guests said they were stuck on rides as workers reset them. the outage affected about 4,000 anaheim customers and several well, quite a sight at the jersey shore where a shark washed up on the beach. look at this incredible video here. you can see some kids actually interacting with the shark after helping it back in the water. it's gotta be a better game to play than that. this happened in surrender city near sacramento avenue. the beach patrol doesn't know exactly what kind of shark it was. they say it was about six feet long. they're also telling swimmers it's safe to go back in the water. the last time i heard those words it's safe to go back in

there once again. we'll have is traffic and weather on the 2s coming up in a couple of minutes. first, a lanmark queens milk factory is shutting its doors. >> the nearly century-old elmhurst dairy says changing consumer habits will force it to close. vanessa is here with more on this. >> yeah, the owner of elmhurst dairy hopes to create a new business at the site, but now nearly 300 employees are looking for jobs. >>reporter: the conveyor belt runs nonstop inside the dairy, carrying millions the plant has been a mainstay on jamaica road in queens since 1936. but now long-time employees are wondering where their pay checks will come from once the factory closes october 30th. >> i'm already missing this place. you know, i'm supporting my family, i'm feeding my family from this place, 21 years. this place is my life. >> this is henry schwartz, the owner of this company. >>reporter: he speaks fondly of his father who first start

he says he tried to keep the business running, but has lost tens of millions in recent years because of consumers changing hackettes. >> we were changing nature's most perfect food and delivering it to millions of people throughout the new york area. believe it or not they're not drinking pasteurized milk. there's been an enormous decline. >>reporter: at its height in the '70s and '80s, the milk factory employed nearly 600 people with good paying jobs. this forklift operator says it's the best job he say about this company. >>reporter: the workers will not get severance pay, but some will be offered jobs at the company's other food-related businesses in upstate and in new jersey. meanwhile, the owner says he's considering a new business at the site, possibly entertainment related. >> we expect to go ahead and take our 16 acres and make it into new businesses that employ far more people. >>reporter: but schwartzed adds most of the existing

westbound into the city. we have two lanes now close on the brooklyn-bound upper level of the verrazano bridge. we have delays that sten back now to lily pond avenue. stick with the lower level through the area for a little bit of a smoother commute for you. now alternate side parking, it is in effect city wide today. be safe don't text and drive. chris and mary, back over to you. >> alex, thank you. police in queens are on the hunt for the killer who attacked and murdered a 30-year- old jogger. >> this morning investigators uncovering new information and new evidence. cbs 2's andrea grymes is in howard beach with more for us mary, police sources say that they are looking at trash that they found near the scene, testing it to see if it'll come up with some type of clue that will lead to this killer. but take a look behind me, police are on the scene here in howard beach, searching for anything that could lead them to the person who strangled 30- year-old karina vetrano to death. grief-stricken loved ones and howard beach residents lit

30-year-old karina vetrano, others who didn't, but all shaken and outraged by her murder. >> this girl was a beautiful girl in the prime of her life, you know, taken down by an animal. >>reporter: investigators put up reward posters in the neighborhood, hoping for any tips that could lead to vertrano's killer. vertrano, an avid runner left her home around 5:00 p.m. on tuesday for a jog nearby on an unpaved trail in the spring creek federal parkland near the belt parkway. police say she usually went an injury kept him home. he got concerned when she did not answer his calls. >> at some point after that her father began to get worried, where she was, she didn't return home normally. he called a member of the service, police chief who lives nearby who then called 911. >>reporter: vertrano's dad helped police search and tuesday night pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy area about 15 feet away from the running path. investigators say her dad was

strangled to death and possibly sexually assaulted. police sources say one of her hands was clutching grass, indicating she may have been dragged. we're told a single sneaker and her headphones were missing. neighbors say many frequent this area, including homeless, day laborers and fishermen. it's unclear whether vertrano knew her killer or was targeted at random. >> it's just a terrible tragedy. i don't know what else to say, you know. it's frightening because i go bike ridi that path. >>reporter: and, again, back out here live, you can see the street here still blocked off by police, continuing to search for clues into the night. we did check in with police just a short time ago. they say they cannot say if they have any persons of interest, so far no suspects in this case. reporting live in howard beach, queens, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. >> andrea, thank you. new this morning, police are looking for a woman who tried to rob a bank on the upper west side. police released these

not answer his calls. >> at some point after that her father began to get worried, where she was, she didn't return home normally. he called a member of the service, police chief who lives nearby who then called 911. >>reporter: vertrano's dad helped police search and tuesday night pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy area about 15 feet away from the running path. investigators say her dad was the one who found her body. strangled to death and posi police sources say one of her hands was clutching grass, indicating she may have been dragged. we're told a single sneaker and her headphones were missing. neighbors say many frequent this area, including homeless, day laborers and fishermen. it's unclear whether vertrano knew her killer or was targeted at random. >> it's just a terrible tragedy. i don't know what else to say, you know. it's frightening because i go bike riding everyday right on

holland tunnels are delay free. alternate parking, it's in effect city wide. be safe don't text and drive. chris and mary, back to you >> alex, thank you. police in queens are on the hunt for a killer who attacked a 30-year-old jogger. >> this morning investigators uncovers new information and new evidence. cbs 2's andrea grymes is in howard beach with more. andrea. >>reporter: chris and mary, investigators now know that 30- year-old karina vetrano was strangled to death and possibly sexually assaulted. what they don't know this morning is motive. at this point do not know if she was targeted at random or if her killer sought her out. grief-stricken loved ones and howard beach residents lit candles, consoling each other into the night, some who knew 30-year-old karina vetrano, others who didn't, but all shaken and outraged by her murder. >> this girl was a beautiful girl in the prime of her life, you know, taken down by an animal. >>reporter: investigators put up reward posters in the neighborhood, hoping for any

vertrano's killer. vertrano, an avid runner left her home around 5:00 p.m. on tuesday for a jog nearby on an unpaved trail in the spring creek federal park land near the belt parkway. police say she usually went with her father, but this time an injury kept him home. he got concerned when she did not answer his calls. >> at some point after that her father began to get worried, where she was, she didn't return home normally. he called a member of the se nearby who then called 911. >>reporter: vertrano's dad helped police search and tuesday night pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy area about 15 feet away from the running path. investigators say her dad was the one who found her body, strangled to death and possibly sexually assaulted. police sources say one of her hands was clutches grass, indicating she may have been dragged. we're told a single sneaker and her headphones were missing.

have that ladder still above the roof of that warehouse addressing some of the hot spots that remain. this was a fast-moving fire fueled by some of the materials stored inside. the massive flames lighting up the sky on 37th street in sunnyside wednesday night, more than 250 firefighters battling the raging fire as the warehouse burned. inside a flammable combination fueling the burst of flames that could be seen and smelled for miles. of lacquers, thinners, painters, paint in the shop which led to a quick fire spread. >> it was like a weird immense smell. it was really strong. >>reporter: the warehouse listed as new york custom interior millwork corporation, a family-owned wood work and interior design company. no employees were inside the building when the flames began around 7:30 p.m. it took crews four hours to get it under control.

janelle. >>reporter: well, chris, last night the fire chief told people who live here to shut their windows as a precaution. the good news is this morning the smoke not quite as bad, but you can see fire crews, they have been out here throughout the night and this morning still dousing those hot spots that remain. that roof that you're looking at, part of it collapsed from the intensity of the flames. the massive flames lighting up the sky on 37th street in sunnyside wednesday night, more than 250 firefighters battling the raging warehouse burned. inside a flammable combination fueling the burst of flames that could be seen and smelled for miles. >> had a lot of wood, had a lot of lacquers, thinners, painters, paint in the shop which led to a quick fire spread. >> it was like a weird immense smell. it was really strong. >>reporter: the warehouse listed as new york custom interior millwork corporation, a family-owned wood work and

candles, consoling each other into the night, some who knew 30-year-old karina vetrano, others who didn't, but all shaken and outraged by her murder. >> this girl was a beautiful girl in the prime of her life, you know, taken down by an animal. >>reporter: investigators put up reward posters in the neighborhood, hoping for any tips that could lead to vertrano's killer. vertrano, an avid runner left her home around 5:00 p.m. on tuesday for a jog nearby on an unpaved trail in the spring creek federal park land the belt parkway. police say she usually went with her father, but this time an injury kept him home. he got concerned when she did not answer his calls. >> at some point after that her father began to get worried, where she was is, she didn't return home normally. he called a member of the service, police chief who lives nearby who then called 911. >>reporter: vertrano's dad helped police search and tuesday night pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy

investigators say her dad was the one who found her body, strangled to death and possibly sexually assaulted. police sources say one of her hands was clutching grass, indicating she may have been dragged. we're told a single sneaker and her headphones were missing. neighbors say many frequent this area, including homeless, day laborers and fishermen. it's unclear whether vertrano knew her killer or was targeted at random. >> it's just a terrible tragedy i don't know say. you know, it's frightening because i go bike riding everyday right on that path. >>reporter: and back out here live, you're taking another look here near the crime scene. we're told that vertrano graduated from st. john's university. she worked at a local catering hall. police say her father asked her not to run on this path without him, but she did so anyway. reporting live this morning in howard beach, queens, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. >> andrea, thank you. and we're continuing to

short the sentences of 214 federal inmates, that includes 67 people who were serving life terms. almost all were serving time for non-violent drug crimes. most will be released december 1st. the white house wants congress to pass a criminal justice overhaul which would address harsh mandatory sentencing. until then, the administration says to expect more clemency action. for the first time, the battle over transgender bathroom rights reaches the u.s. supreme court. the court ruled a virginia school board can block a boys' bathroom at least for now. 17-year-old gavin grimm was born female, but ides as a male. grimm sued the board arguing it was a vielation, discriminating laws barring him from using the bathroom of his choice. this fall the supreme court will review a lower court ruling that allowed grimm to use the boys' bathroom. it's now 6:48. we're following up with the little girl who underwent a life-saving surgery yesterday, and we've got some good news to share coming up.
