inside this deli. it spill out onto the street. a man threw a bottle at another individual, but missed, hitting a small child. >> somebody tried to hit somebody with a bottle, then they hit the baby in like, his forehead. >>reporter: family still at the scene after this small child was the unintended target of a bottle thrown during some sort of dispute here on the sidewalk. >> i feel bad when i see the baby with his mom. >>reporter: this man saw the clumsy attack baby. >> very bad. he got one open in here. >>reporter: police focusing on the building across the street where neighbors say the suspect may live. no confirmation yet on the condition of the child, but witnesses here say the child did not appear to be grievously injured. police just now giving some information on the suspect, -- vie described as a 23-year-old hispanic male still on the loose.

news. >> steve, thank you. new at noon, chopper 2 over a construction site in queens village where a worker fell into a trench. rescue crews had to pull him out. he was more than 10 feet down. the fdny says the man was covered in debris. he is now out with just minor injuries. a bronx deli worker is dead after police struggle with the suspect. investigators say bullets went flying after the suspect grabbed the officer's gun and opened fire. cbs 2's magdalena doris is live in bedford park where the street is still scene. magdalena. >>reporter: and, mary, news has spread that the store clerk behind me here was shot and killed last night and it's sending a ripple effect throughout the neighborhood. this clerk known to customers as wally was beloved. bullets cover east 198th street in front of a&m deli. it's where police say the cashier of a nearby shop was shot and killed overnight. >> unbelievable that he just

rest in peace. rest it in peace. >>reporter: police say a 49- year-old deli worker was killed by 30-year-old efrain guzman who stole a police officer's gun and started firing inside this store. customers say the clerk had family in gaughan a and a close connection to the people he served for over a decade. >> kind, humble, he was a real dude, man. >> we became wally's family in the neighborhood. >>reporter: police say last night the clerk was working next door at m&a food. after an argument, he kicked guzman out of his store and across the street. >> he's a worker in another store across the street who came over to the store where the incident occurred to assist. >>reporter: when officers responded to the scuffle, they were momentarily caught off guard by guzman and things quickly turned deadly. nypd assistant chief larry newcomb. >> mr. guzman made a very fast move and basically rip the gun out of the officer's holster. >>reporter: guzman is said to have empty the magazine, letting out 15 rounds, killing

moments earlier. an officer fired back, injuring guzman. >> the second officer fired three shots at mr. guzman, striking him twice. >>reporter: the patrol borough bronx commander says the cops involved were fortunate they weren't killed. >> the officers were very lucky. actually, one of the officers look like he was trying to protect the civilian who was ultimately killed. he was absolutely in the line of fire. >>reporter: now, efrain guzman was shot he was taken to st. barnabus hospital in stable condition. charges against him are still pending. the officers involved in this incident were not hurt, but now police have the task of finding out how that gun got into the wrong hans. live in the bedford park section of the bronx, magdalena doris, cbs 2 news. >> magdalena, thank you. also in the bronx, the nypd is looking for three robbers who stole a man's cell phone and knocked him out. it happened early monday morning on east gun hill road

they tried to get the phone back. the man whose phone was stolen was left unconscious after being punched and kicked repeatedly. the two victims were treat at jacoby medical center and released. murder mystery continues this noon in the case of a new york city woman killed while jogging in massachusetts. the young woman had established herself as an employee of google here in the city. cbs 2's janelle burrell is live at noon outside their offices in chelsea. janelle. >>reporter: well, alex, kind, bright and gracious are just few of the words that colleagues of vanessa marcot have used to describe her. she had a thriving career here in the city and this afternoon police and the small massachusetts town where she was killed, they are throwing all their resources they can at this case as they try to track down her killer. >>reporter: her death so brutal, so vicious, many who knew vanessa merkotsay they're simply too singed to talk. her colleagues at google where she works too stun to comment

like shocks your system. >>reporter: this woman who works in the same building on eighth avenue where 27-year-old marcot had been an account executive for the tech giant. employees at her company notified by e-mail of marcot's death. >> it was really, really, really dispaifting to think -- devastating to think that can happen so close, it can happen to anyone, it can happen anywhere at any time of day. >>reporter: the manhunt now intensifying in the small town of princeton, massachusetts, about 50 miles west her mother over the weekend. investigators say she had gone out for a jog in the afternoon along a tree-lined route. when she didn't return home, her mom called police. her body found sunday evening in woods a half mile from her mother's home and there are reports that she was naked with burns on her hands and feet and signs of sexual assault. >> please use an abundance of caution. we don't know if this is a random act. we're asking you to be very

hunt for her killer, while here in new york some women say they're now more cautious when running alone. >> new york city is typically safe if you live in manhattan, but you never know with these things. so i tend to be a little bit more careful. >>reporter: just five days before marcot's death, 30-year- old jogger karina vetrano was killed in howard beach, queens where detectives are still trying to find a suspect is. at a community meeting there last night, police say they don't believe the cases are connected. >> with that said, we will compare evidence as both cases progress. >>reporter: two young women, two young lives full of promise, both snatched away. >> just pray for her family at this point. so sad. >>reporter: and tonight friends and family of vanessa marcot will hold a vigil in her honor in princeton, massachusetts. reporting live this noon from chelsea, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> janelle, thank you. now to new information on the zika virus. the florida health department

the first case of zika contracted in palm beach county. the patient involved recently traveled south to the miami- dade county area, so it is possible the infection took place there. florida governor rick scott wants students to be taught zika protection measure when is they return to school. back here in westchester county a water warning for several towns, all residents and businesses in hawthorne, thornwood and valhala are on high water restrictions that. means car wash and use of further notice as the town try -- towns try to plaint the water supply. they say it is from a malfunction at the commerce pump station. more delays and cancellations today as delta airlines recovers from yesterday's massive service disruption. the airline canceling 400 flights this morning with another 700 delayed. a power outage in atlanta monday night is being blame for the disruption. the fbi says it doesn't appear to be the result of hacking or other foul play. delta says it canceled about 1,000 flights yesterday. so if the problem isn't

going on? cbs 2's chris van cleve reports some airlines's' computers systems are older than the planes themselves. >>reporter: the outage disabled delta's flight status alerts >> we found out there were four hours delayed. >>reporter: they incorrectly listed flights as on time, the delays and cancellations prompted an apology from deltaceo. >> it's an all-hands-on-deck effort. >>reporter: delta's outage raises questions about the reliability of computer systems used by airlines which are not regulated by the both suffered computer problems. in july a faulty router forced southwest to ground flights, a disruption that lasted days. >> they're running on a reservation system that is more than 35 years old. >>reporter: airlines now rely on computers to handle pretty much everything from reservations and seat assignments to how much fuel and snacks to load on a plane. hartafelt says delta has been rebuilding its core technologies for six months.

water slide where a 10-year-old boy died sunday has not been inspected by the state since it opened two years ago. police say the child died from a neck injury while on the ride which is the tallest water slide in the world. cbs 2's omar villa franga report from kansas city. >>reporter: jeff sanford and melanie goce said they went down the massive slide hours before caleb schwab. >> i saw caleb sliding down and there was a blood trail. found the 10-year-old in a pool at verruckt's base. verruckt plunges more than 168 feet or approximately 17 stories high. the second drop is about 50 feet. two to three people can ride in a raft at one time and riders are secured by velcro straps >> stweant that secure being strapped in. >>reporter: paul says his belt came off while riding with a friend and his 9-year-old son

american lily king won gold medal in the 100-meter breast stroke, but a russian swimmer's second place finish is making headlines. cbs 2's ben tracy explains. >> here comes comes. >>reporter: she swam in lane 5 right next to her american rifle, lily king. by the time she touch the wall, the russian who served a 16- month suspension for doping won a silver medal, coming in second to the 19-year-old american. the grudge match between the two began over the weekend when they engaged in a fierce finger shakeoff. lily king said afterwards you're shaking your finger for number one and you've been caught for drug cheating.

russia initially submitted 389 athletes for the rio games. only 271 were approved to compete by the international olympic committee. but in the past several days, eight russian athletes ban for doping have been allowed back in after winning appeals. >> these are people who have served sanctions and are now clear. >>reporter: thomas hoberman is a doping expert at the university of texas. he believes the i.o.c. cut russia a break by not banning the so because vladimir putin spent more than $50 billion on the sochi olympics, an all-time record. >> i do not see an end to this crisis in sight. i think that the incentives to dope were built into the system a long time ago. >>reporter: to be fair, some u.s. athletes have also been caught up in the doping controversy competing here in rio are track stars justin gatlin and tyson gaye who do have a history of doping.

some of that rain a little later in the week. as far as your overall quality, well, let's talk about the uv forecast, let's talk about the pollen. that's actually up a bit. air quality is moderate today. don't forget the sunscreen, though. it's at a 9. hey, if you're going to the beach, don't forget too that we have a moderate rip current risk for the south-facing beaches of long island. it's a low risk for the jersey shore. so diving into the satellite and radar real quickly, it's nice clouds punning waiting your skies here. zooming out, we show you the big view. there's a big ridge of high pressure. there's wind and we'll put the computer models to work to show you we're already seeing that change, the wind out of the south. that wind out of the south is bringing in warmer temperatures, ultimately more humidity. and as we look ahead over the next few hours, we're going to see more humidity tonight, and then that chance of rain in the forecast, some showers and storms tomorrow. that south flow continues. so we see another round of
