it is fore 30 and 75 degrees already. bring the umbrella before you leave the house. good morning. >> welcome to cbs news. we begin with breaking news jersey city. at least one person is dead and several hurt after shots fired near a church. it's very much an active scene this morning. you can see police had this area between park and grant street shutdown as this investigation gets underway. all of this unfolding around 11:30 last night.

one of those people was killed are also learning the two other people injured are teenage girls with possible injuries to their head. so far we have seen investigators in and out of the church. this is what the scene looked like earlier this morning. they been collecting evidence for the better part of this morning. it appears to be a large part of their investigation we also saw them bring a man as they tried to piece together what happens leading up to the shooting. the hudson county prosecutor's office is the lead investigator on this case. we are waiting for more information from them. but three people were shot overnight and one of those dead. so for we've not learned the identity of the person who was killed.

to identify a trio of man suspected in a violent mugging this summer. early in the morning of june 6 the 54-year-old man was in the stairwell of a building in far rockaway he was struck in the head with an unknown object. the suspect took his cell phone and fled. the victim was taken to the hospital. good morning. >> good morning. enough said. i have my umbrella and i encourage you to take yours. it will not be a washout there will not be nonstop rain but that will be passing showers and storms. you can see that patch through parts of westchester into the south shore. look up state and west. there is moisture coming in from the south and a slow- moving front that will compress the air and served an extra

>> reporter: the fourth firefighters trip for birds and released. no civilian to hurt. the fire was caused by children playing with a rag near a stovetop. we have a live report from the hospital coming up. for people are recovering from injuries after a car driven by an 88-year-old woman slammed into a bus stop three people were hurt along with the driver but the injuries are not life-threatening. this happened on union turnpike near hyde park after 5 pm yesterday. the woman apparently lost control a driver was injured in the bronx when a tree fell onto the pickup truck. this happened before 4 pm yesterday near heron avenue. the driver was taken to saint barnabas hospital for observation. no word what caused the tree to topple. nypd investigating how a man pulled a gun from a police officer's altered and opened fire. this happened yesterday in bedford park section of the

a deadly accident during a gun demonstration in florida. a woman was shot to death by a police officer in front of 30 people attending a citizen police academy class. the officer was showing participants how to use a gun during a live role-playing exercise. the police department call this a horrible accident saying the gun was meant to shoot blanks. is that it shot live bullets. they are investigating what went wrong. coming up a warning for walkers how an early morning workout routine could put some at risk and new information on the zika virus. we have humidity on the rise during the day and some rain coming down. a sticky feel. storms come through later.

a prior incident involved a group of teenagers running with their track team. we're told five men attacked them and demanded cell phones and cash. the suspects left without anything but the victims have been beaten. >> reporter: the area is safe it's nice year it was shocking to hear what happened. >> reporter: this week the nypd used social media warning people on the north shore to be extra vigilant. between says avoid walking alone look confident and be aware of your surroundings. travel in well lit areas. police also say have your keys -- how your keys ready to enter your car or presence quickly and whether in or out of the car make sure it is locked. staten island councilman joe crowley says he's been asking for extra police presence in parks for years. >> staten island is a large borough with an extremely large amount of parkland and there's not always going ability to control all of that. it might have been visible from the street >> despite the warnings the nypd says robberies are down

three people were shot. one man was killed, as you mentioned, and two teenagers were injured with possible graze wounds to their head. again the investigation largely focused around this church. we have seen investigators from the hudson county prosecutor's office as well as new jersey police in and out of the church collecting evidence. we also saw them return to the seen with possibly a witness to the case. so far they have not released the incident or the condition of the two girls injured. we are told the hudson county prosecutor's office is taking the lead on the case. as we get additional details we will bring them to you. reporting live from jersey city, janelle burrell, cbs2 news. and new video of suspects accused of stealing a religious

good morning. for your morning drive there is an accident northbound on the grand central parkway causing minor delays. also following an accident with overturned vehicle blocking the right lane on the exit ramp from the newark bay extension ramp to the ramp there. and delays on the uptown 5 train due the we have delays. be safe. don't text and drive. a bronx fire leaves three of new york's bravest in critical condition this morning. >> the fire broke out at a home in wakefield and spread to nearby buildings. now the firefighters are being treated at a medical center. >> reporter: the injuries stem from a fire, chris and mary, but also a truck accident, when a crew from queens was coming to help out here in the bronx.

firefighters criticalically injured. the four alarm fire started by kids playing with a stove moved fast on 235th street in the wakefield section. by the end of the day four firefighters were sent to the hospital from two separate scenes. >> we deal with a lot of tough scenes but it was a tough day for the fire department. >> reporter: it started when flames broke out at a home early yesterday afternoon, spreading to four others. the hot fire on a hot day proved especialdi to put it out. 51-year-old firefighter joseph brady had a heart attack. 34-year-old firefighter patrick morello had heat stroke, both in critical condition. >> heat stroke is a very serious injury. the man's temperature was extremely high and his heartrate was extremely high. >> reporter: and a 52-year-old lieutenant had burn injuries

at the scene others were called to the borough to provide back up staffing. that is how a fourth firefighter was several hurt three miles away at westchester avenue and waters place. ladder 138 firefighter nearly had his arm torn off when his truck crashed beam. investigators believe he was waving to warn someone and then since see the beam. the mayor stopped by the jacobi medical center for an update. the fbi commissioner saying it is a day for prayers for their members. so, to recap a total of four firefighters were injured. this morning the fire department said three of them remain here at jacobi in critical condition. they could not say weather

that is the holy ghost tabernacle ministries. this church has a community center. it appears inside that hall last night is where those gunshots erupted around 11:30 p.m. we want to show you video of what the scene looked like earlier. we know so far three people were shot. one of those people, a man and teenaged girls were injured, heads. we have seen from the new jersey police and hudson county prosecutor's office in and out of the church collecting evidence, processing the scene inside. so far, though, the prosecutor's office has not released the name of the man killed. they haven't yet told us the condition of those two girls who were injured, but the prosecutor's office now the lead investigators on this case. again, one man killed and two teenagers injured in this gunfire overnight.

last night. we want to show you video of what the scene looked like earlier. three people were struck during that gunfire, one of those people, a young man, was killed. we are learning that the two others who were injured are teenage girls with injuries to their head. we spoke with a man who knows someone who was actually inside that party last night. he says he heard the gunshots and then describes for us what happened next. >> we heard gunshots of time. wasn't really sure if it was gunshots or not, but then we saw police lights and everything. then my friend called around the corner, check and see if her niece and nephews were fine and everything. we had no idea it was here. who would think in jersey city that something would happen at a church? >> and late into the night and into this morning, we saw investigators in and out of that church here on communipaw avenue

cancellations and delays on delta flights following outages earlier this week. three firefighters are in the hospital this morning in critical condition after a major fire in the bronx. >> it broke out yesterday at a home in wakefield and quickly spread. cbs 2's andrea grimes is live where the firefighters are being treated. andrea. >> chris and mary, two of those firefighters still in critical condition were injured in that fire. a third nearly had his arm torn off. he was coming from queens the bronx to help out. all three remain in critical condition here this morning. >> the four-alarm fire started by kids playing with a stove, moved fast on 235th street in the wakefield section. by the end of the day, four firefighters were sent to the hospital from two separate scenes. >> we deal with a lot of tough things, but it was a tough day for the fire department. >> it all started when flames broke out at a home here early yesterday afternoon, spreading

especially difficult and dangerous for crews trying to put it out. 51-year-old firefighter joseph brady had a heart attack. 34-year-old firefighter patrick morelo had severe heatstroke, both in critical condition. >> heatstroke is a very serious injury. the man's temperature was extremely high. his heart rate was extremely high. >> 54-year-old lieutenant joseph was treated at the hospital and released. since so many bronx crews were at the fire scene, other companies were called to provide backup staffing. that's how a fourth firefighter was severely hurt in a freak accident about three miles away at westchester avenue and waters place. 44-year-old firefighter sean orourke nearly had his arm torn off when his truck crashed into an elevated subway beam.

live gun demonstration in punta gorda, florida. a woman was shot to death by a police officer in front of more than 30 people attending a citizen police academy class. the officer was showing participants how to use a gun during a live role-playing exercise. the police department calling this a horrible accident saying the gun was meant to shoot a blank. they are investigating what went wrong. the police officer involved is on administrative leave. four people are recovering from injuriess woman slammed into a bus stop. three people were hurt along with the driver but we're told the injuries are not life threatening. it happened on union turnpike in new hyde park. police say a woman had a mechanical issue with her tire that forced her to veer off the road. in the bronx, a driver was injured when a giant tree fell on his pickup truck. the incident happened just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon near herring avenue. the driver was taken to st. barnabus hospital for observation.

new this morning, three babies in maryland tested positive for a potentially deadly bacteria. the babies were being treated at prince george's hospital neonatal intensive care unit. the bacteria can be deadly for people with compromised immune systems. hospital officials say the bacteria may have originated in water pipes. crews will begin disinfecting the plumbing today. the zika virus continues to spread here in the health department confirms a newborn in texas has died as a result of zika. the baby girl was born with birth defects including microcephaly at a hospital in suburban houston. the child's mother traveled to el salvador during her pregnancy. in florida, there are new cases in miami-dade county. that includes a person from palm bsh beach county.
