>> they are prepared. if he false they have an inflatable pad below him. he has no helmet. they are offering the line with the carbiner attached. this man isn't taking it. he has been communicating but hasn't been listening to them and >> joe, what do you make of it? >> if they are going to reach out and try to you will him in, they have to wait until he gets a little higher. the police officers are calm and they realize what's going on and trying to avoid them.
6:31 pm
somewhere else. if you are tuning into the "cbs evening news," we are staying with this high drama over midtown. this man trying to climb up the south side of the building at trump tower. he tied up traffic pedestrian, television air time and viewers around the world as he made this ascent. he trying to get him to surrender. no false moves. it just hasn't worked. so joe giacolone, retired nypd sergeant, what happened now. getting to a point where he is within a grabbable area. his cause is going to be lost because he inconvenienced so
6:32 pm
>> it's 6:32. the "cbs evening news" is airing on our sister station, tv 10/55. is the evening news is on our sister station, tv 10/55. joe, he is almost -- he is almost level with them. >> he is removing at a snail's pace all afternoon. we have been watching it -- >> they are marc the offering and he rejects it. it looks that way. >> yes. >> body language snow. the officers saying here, take this. it's not happening. >> it's getting dangerous. he is beyond his stress. he is not tethered at all. and you know, we got to make
6:33 pm
him, that he is going to do so. >> got to admire the patience of these officers. >> that's why they are in the job that they are. you know, not every cop can do this because they don't have the patience for it. you know, this is something that is a skill that you can't keep can't teach. this officer this is left hand it seemed that he had clicked open that carabiner looking for a spot to attach it somewhere. >> looks like he is in looks like he was going to reach down and try to strap it around his knapsack or what have you. but, um, now he changed his mind. >> you wonder, do they identify a spot where they can just hook him and grab him? >> is that possible? >> he has a harness on. >> is that part of the calculation? >> it's the only one available there but we don't want a person's body weight hanging by that. >> we can see the harness he
6:34 pm
there has to be a spot on there. we have no idea what he is saying. is he completely irrational? is he making any kind of sense? they have to judge what kind of guy they are dealing with before they make a move. >> yeah. the officers saying come on. this is a big move here. because the whole world is watching. >> he is waving them off. saying come >> but just the space you know not touching him, again that skill or -- >> our first contact. >> here we go. >> he is trying to pull himself on the other side. >> they got him. they got him. okay. thank god. >> wow. >> and he is still struggling it seems. >> right. but at least he is in.
6:35 pm
>> yup. well, i said now they will probably send him to bellevue for a psychological ee absolutely situation. that's the normal course of business because that was force and strength. you look at the arms on these guys. they >> officers and nypd did a great job on this. nobody gets hurt. >> they are supporting each other there. you can see the esu officers now trying to take these suction cups off the windows of the trump tower. somewhere in the 20s the floor of the 58-story building.
6:36 pm
because again, we don't know his motive was, what he had in that bag. i did see a bottle of water but that's such a part of it here right? >> sure. absolutely. you're dealing with the unknown. but one thing that the nypd does is that when they have special positions like esu and hostage negotiations they take the very best, the cream of the crop out officers that they have. so this is -- the whole world can see how professional they really are. >> well, you know what, joe, there was a lot we didn't know today we had no idea who, why or what was going on with this guy. they deserve a commendation
6:37 pm
anybody getting hurt. the patience, strengths, skill. just made it happen. >> wanting to grab him when you probably wanted to and wait fog that are moment. >> and to wait for them to trap him. >> checkmate. >> game over. you couldn't let him climb whole building. we would be here until tomorrow! >> at this rate. >> is valerie castro still available to us on the ground? just wondering what the crowd reaction would be at this time because people have been gathered down there for hours watching this, as well. police set up the barricades,
6:38 pm
>> they were waiting for a position that he would get in so that grabbed and you know, pull him in. >> can you see that right there? >> wow. >> he is still fighting!
6:39 pm
>> they would probably just from the outside what was in it, i wouldn't be a bit surprised allotted of people in the floors above or below so unfortunately you and the police are going to have >> what about that? we didn't really know what was in there. they were confident it wouldn't go badly. >> many times in my career, you are just like wow that could have been really bad. it's just one of the things that the cops do every day. they make these sacrifices so that everybody else can try to stay safe.
6:40 pm
you know, anything in there. who knows? but, um, i think they went with the likelihood that it wasn't and they just had no choice. as we're watching this, this is tape of the esu officers who rescued, grabbed the man. [ stand by for replacement
6:41 pm
you have have play the odds and the police job isro know, there's no guarantee that if he had fallen would he have hit the mattress or whatever but you have to prepare for it. it was like a textbook on -- if there was attention book on how to do this, these guys wrote it >> joe, i felt myself exhale when they got him >> i think we need water >> i think everybody does. i'm sure you feel the same thing. what's it like for an officer.
6:42 pm
that moment, we got him, what's that like >> it's very difficult to describe. there's a feeling of euphoria when it's over. when they had anymore cuffs, it was probably everybody taking a deep breath like wow, this could have ended badly. every police officer has felt that a number of times in their career and you just do it and when it's over, you relief. your knees probably shake at that point. one thing about policing is you don't really get scared until after it's over >> joe, thank you so much. go ahead >> pardon me. one of the things also earlier in this was concerned about that weather. fortunately, it did not rain or storm. lonnie, what can you tell us? >> okay, it didn't storm or
