certainly the talk here outside of trump tower this afternoon. that teenager's name steven rogata and this afternoon, he is facing charges of reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing and it's raising the question of how was he able to get away with it? today a visible nypd presence in and around trump tower after the daring skyscraper climb that left open the most gritty new yorkers puzzled. >> i was >> totally insane. >> reporter: 19-year-old steven rogata of virginia now facing charges, after wednesday's three hour stunt using suction cups to scale the building. and a youtube video he posted earlier this week he claimed it was a ploy to meet donald trump. >> the reason i climbed your tower was to get your attention. if i had sought this via conventional means i would be much less likely to have success. >> reporter: he was glued to

hundreds watches below. >> i was here tuesday and there was a secret service every five feet. so then yesterday, all of a sudden, when it starlets breaking out that this guy is climbing up the building i'm like how is that even possible? >> the building has its own private security but it's unclear if anyone was stationed on the outdoor terrace about five floors up where he began his ascent around 3:30 p.m. it took the skilled nypd team several attempts to reach him. some threw a lo trying to corner him by breaking windows. it finally took the removal of a large window pane on the 21st floor where they were able to grab him. >> i reached out and i took hold of his hand so i said sir you need to come with me. >> reporter: donald trump who was in virginia during part of the day tweeting --

[ laughter ] >> reporter: now we did reach out to the trump organization about security here at trump tower. they referred us to the secret service. as for donald trump, he is on the road once again campaigning today in florida. reporting live from midtown, janelle burrell, cbs2 news. >> janelle thank you. a terrible fire at an apartment building in the bronx early this morning. ten people were hurt and from a second floor window to escape the flames. cbs2's andrea grymes was there as residents returned to see what's left. >> reporter: richard sierra carries bobs out of his -- boxes out of his fire ravaged billing. picking through rubble looking for anything salvage able. >> my neighbor's apartment is completely totaled. >> reporter: you saved your stuff. >> because most of the stuff was already in cannisters.

multifamily -- shooting from the multifamily home in the bedford section of the bronx around 2:00 this morning. the fdny says the electrical fire started in a bedroom air conditioner and there was no working smoke alarm. >> definitely scared for my wife. >> reporter: his wife was able to run out of the apartment but the brother-in-law had to jump. >> hurt himself and that's how he got cut. he's going out and the window cut him and had third degree burns. >> ep can see how far he fell. about 12 feet below before firefighters arrived. iffied in kept the flames contained to the one two story home but it was not easy. >> when we first came up it was several dogs inside the apartment that they encountered when they first got in. and then there was also seemed to be a large accumulation of stuff inside the apartment which made it first difficult to extinguish and then difficult to search the apartment for the remaining victims. >> reporter: in addition to the man seriously hurt when

forecast coming up in a bit. right now back to the desk. more about the officer who killed a woman during a police demonstration in florida. 28-year-old officer lee cowell fired the gun that killed mary knowlton. the 73-year-old was accidentally hit with real ammunition during a role- playing exercise tuesday. her family says she was a remarkable woman and are looking at the incident as a tragic accident. >> are you angry in any way? >> my mom brought herself not to hate. we know this gentleman didn't mean for this to happen. sure it's supercareless but you know if you hate, it only kills you. >> but as the family mourns questions remain and investigators are trying to figure out why real ammo was used instead of blanks and officer cole who was the target

been put on administrative leave. he was also forced to resign from another police agency in 2013. new video of the suspect wanted for destroying seven tractor-trailers in east new york brooklyn last month. police say the man in the video torched seven vehicles mostly trucks and it took the fdny hours to put out the fires. five of the seven trucks have markings for tts trucking company in newark. leading some to believe they may have been targeted. in maryland, two people are confirmed dead after a fiery explosion in two apartment buildings ni officials say at least 30 people were hurt including three firefighters when two four story buildings in the dc suburb of silver spring went up in flames just before midnight. rubble spilled onto the seats after one -- streets after one of the buildings partially collapsed. >> i was sleeping and then i heard a boom and my mom said wake up. and there's a fire. so whole apartment shook. it was like fire, big flames coming out of the roof and

blast, 90 people have been displaced. a new playground in queens is padlocked because of a sinkhole. the community playground was just a few months old but the ground under the gym is collapsing. we asked the department of education if the contractor who built it will pay for the repairs. but the doe couldn't say. the repairs are due to begin next week. now to the campaign trail where donald trump and hillary clinton are trying to get their messages out. but both candidates are dealing with the same problems that have been plaguing campaigns. cbs2's craig boswell reports. >> isis is honoring president obama. >> reporter: donald trump is trying to shift the focus back to national security. he says the president's policies created a vacuum that allowed isis to grow. >> he founded isis. and i would say the co-founder would be crooked hillary clinton. >> reporter: the move is an

controversial remarks suggesting second amendment advocates could take gun control matters into their own hands. trump says he was talking about rallying voters, his opponents say it was imciting violence. >> words matter my friend. and if you are running to be president or you are president of the united states, words can have tremendous consequences. >> reporter: hillary clinton will try to shift the focus to the economy at a speech in michigan to lay out a point by and trump's. >> i am proposing an across the board income tax reduction. >> we're doing to make the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes for a change. >> reporter: clinton is dealing with newly released e-mails from her time as secretary of state. one of the e-mails is from a clinton foundation official sent to hillary clinton's state department aides on behalf of a job seeker. the clinton campaign says the job seeker was a former staffer for the clintons and had nothing to do with the

almost to the west shore expressway. police haven't said what exactly caused the accident. a teenaged girl on long island has started a conversation that many find controversial. her online petition is gaining steam to allow girls to become boy scouts. cbs2's jennifer mclogan has this report from bridge hampton. >> reporter: 15-year-old sydney ireland has a passion. >> my parents gave me the opportunity to join the girl scouts. but i really just wanted to do what my brother was doing. >> reporter: at that time, brother brian was a cub t. so sydney beginning at age 4 was allowed the tag along on long island camping trips and skill sessions, tsunami she was accepted an -- soon she was accepted as an unofficial member. >> when i was 11 i also unofficially earned the arrow of light the highest award in the cub scout program. >> reporter: spurred on by her brother who recently earned the eagle scout badge, sydney lobbied to join ranks. >> i tried to continue my journey throughout the boy

because i was female. >> reporter: others challenge her to join girl scouting to help their gold award become just as significant. but sydney had her eyes set on the already established eagle scout badge earned by president, astronauts and military leaders. >> there's a large percentage of boys that end up at really elite institutions because they're eagle scouts. >> reporter: with help from they are father gary -- her father gary she created an online petition now signed almost # thousand to -- 5,000 to officially allow girls membership in boy scouts. one e-mailed her his badge for encouragement. the boy scouts of america responded to our questions via e-mail. saying -- allowing girls to join the organization would go against the group's charter. founded in 1916. >> in 1916, women weren't even allowed to vote. so it's pretty outdated charter. it should be just scouts in general. i think it's just open for everyone. >> reporter: for now sydney

drivers beware, a new report by aaa reveals the growing dangers of debris related crashes on the road. according to the study, between 2011 and 2014, debris on u.s. roads caused more than 200,000 crashes resulting in about 39,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths. the majority of that debris coming from other vehicles. >> that means that a driver did not properly secure their load. or a part actually fell off of a vehicle while they were on the road. >> so if you're carrying
