utah while hillary clinton's lead in national polls has widened. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: donald trump court voters in florida on thursday, the biggest prize of the battleground states. the republican presidential candidate criticized hillary clinton's economic plan. >> maybe the greatest, biggest tax increase in the history of our country. >> reporter: he also doubled down on his theory that the obama administration's policies allowed terrorist groups to grow. >> clinton, these are the founders of isis. >> reporter: trump's recent comments, including his suggestion that second amendment voters could stop clinton, have ignited a fire storm. cbs news has learned more than 70 republicans sent the republican national committee a letter urging the rnc to cut off fund to trump's campaign and shift resources to senate and house races. hillary clinton touted her economic plan, while rallying supporters in michigan.

shot and killed an unarmed black man. the shooting is to be compared to the shooting death of trayvon martin in florida. mark strassmann has details. >> reporter: the 911 call from this raleigh home came at 12:50 sunday morning. the caller was 39-year-old chad copely, a self-described neighborhood watchman. his complaint was about a large crowd gathered outside his home. minutes later, copely called 911 a second time. >> the victim? 20-year-old corin thomas. he was leaving a crowded house

copely later said -- >> reporter: police say thomas was unarmed and copely's warning shot was a shotgun blast fired from inside his garage. he's in jail now, charged with first-degree murder. copely's attorney issued a statement saying, we urge restraint and that folks not rush to judgment. the victim's mother, simone thomas, says she moved to raleigh from new yorn keep her son safe. >> he was a good kid and i don't have him no more! and there is nothing i can do! >> reporter: copely is being held without bond on the murder charge. thomas' mother says she is trying to raise the money she needs to bury her son. mark strassmann, cbs news, raleigh, north carolina. the cause of a massive explosion at an apartment complex in maryland remains

gas before the blast. the explosion wednesday night in silver spring shook homes a mile away. two people were killed and dozens of others injured. up to seven others are unaccounted for. the fire spread so rapidly, residents were jumping out of windows and dropping children. this morning, police in thailand say a string of bombings targeting tourist resorts are not related to international terrorism. between late thursday and early this morning, four resorts were there were at least ten explosions. at least four people were killed, and dozens were wounded, including ten foreigners. police believe the attacks were acts of local sabotage and may be related to an insurgency in muslim majority provinces. the u.s. surgeon general says 25% of puerto rico will be infected by the zika virus by year's end and urging the island to step up in education programs and mosquito control.

by mosquitoes in florida has grown to 45. florida's governor says the area is shrinking but warning the pregnant women to stay away. in another amusement park-related accident, a 3-year-old boy who fell off a roller coaster in pennsylvania has been hospitalized. he fell from an old-style wooden coaster that is southeast of pittsburgh. now the ride is about 1,400 f long and 40 feet high at its heiss. the boy's condition has not been released. you might remember on sunday, a 10-year-old boy was killed on a waterslide in kansas city. and then on monday, three children fell from a ferris wheel in tennessee and all of them survived. here in new york, a gust of wind caused a construction crane to slammed into three world trade center. the crane hit a window on the 12th floor of the building. the building is one of three

towers destroyed on 9/11. it is expected to be finished in 2008. no injuries and no debris fell to the ground. the 19-year-old teenager who climbed up partway trump tower using suction cup has been charged with endangerment. he said he just wanted to talk to trump. it's unclear when he'll appear in court. american swimming and gymnastics star are leading the way to more the u.s. is dominating the game with 16 gold medals and 38 overall. china in second place and japan has 22 medals, including seven golds. jamie yuccas has the latest from rio. >> michael phelps has done it again! >> reporter: another record-setting night for michael phelps, winning the gold medal in the olympic 200-meter individual medley and becoming the first swimmer to win the same competition in four consecutive olympic games.

>> reporter: an emotional phelps listened to the star-spangled banner after being awarded his fourth gold of the rio olympics and the 22nd gold of his career. another record breaking event, this one by 20-year-old simone manuel. she tied with a canadian swimmer for the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle and becoming the first african-american woman to win a gold in swimming. manuel broke following her historic achievement. and the united states gymnastics team kept rolling, two days after the women won the team all-around title, 19-year-old simone biles took home the gold in the individual all-around competition. her teammate, 22-year-old aly raisman took silver. biles is the fourth consecutive american woman to win the all-around title. jamie yuccas, cbs news, rio de janeiro.

megaplex, it was a peak period to see meteor showers and happens every year around this time when earth plows through the tail of the swift tunnel comet. scientists made a wild shark discovery off greenland and a teen cancer patient is fighting with police. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the tennesseean obtained video from a case against security personnel and shows aki international. the suit says the teen's radiation treatment affected her hearing and sight and claims officers failed to consider her disabilities. the denver post reports outrage that a rapist sentence included no prison time. a judge in boulder ordered two years of work or school release and 20 years of probation for austin wilkerson. the former university of of colorado student was convicted of raping a drunk woman in 2014.

roger ailes of sexual misconduct reaches into the double digits. more accusers have come forward since ailes stepped down three weeks ago as head of fox news. 21 century fox is bracing for settlements with many of the women. the associated press reports the release of a north carolina man who was imprisoned for 28 years for a murder. a judge in wilmington ruled jed that johnny small did not get a prosecutors must see if there is enough evidence to put him on trial again. gawker staff held a pizza and booze party in manhattan to mark the gossip site's down julie. gawker and its founder declared bankruptcy after ordered to play millions to hulk hogan. "usa today" reports a startling claim about a shark
