precinct. 35-year-old oscar morel said nothing and gave no explanations for the murders of the imam maulama akonjee and his assistant tharam uddin. both men were buried yesterday. mourners at the funerals say they know why the friends were killed. and they want justice. >> two people just -- got murdered and nypd is saying this might not be a hate crime. what is it then? come on then, somebody coming up behind and shooting for no reason an imam and his assistant, come common sense. >> reporter: the top brass says they have strong evidence to back up the charges starting with what happened before the double homicide. at 1:350 saturday afternoon a hit and run witness and surveillance video placed morel's car at the scene of the crash. moments later, three miles away police say they found surveillance sophomore else getting into that -- of morel getting into that same car after fatally shooting the two men. >> we have looked at the two cars and they were identical. we have looked at the stickers

[ chanting ] residents demonstrated outside the holiday inn at 55th road and morose avenue last night. they don't want -- maurice avenue last night. they don't want a shelter so close to schools and parks temperature city says the -- the city says they need a shelter. the body of a missing boater has been found but the circumstances of his death

pulled from the harbor on monday the day after the dinghy washed ashore in lindenhurst. he never showed up to the yacht club on saturday. cbs2's jennifer mclogan spoke with his parents and neighbors. >> we're in deep -- mourning. >> i didn't think about foul play. i figured it was you know an accident. >> he was a strong swimmer and had a life vest on board the boat but he was not wearing it. case of a to-year-old queens -- 30-year-old queens jogger. more than a quarter million dollars combined is now being offered for information that leads to the capture of her killer. her body was found august 2 thend after she went running near the howard beach home. investigators are trying to identify a male dna sample at the scene and meanwhile officers continue to comb the wooded area where he was she was found -- she was found looking for any new clues. to campaign 2016.

thankfully. no one was hurt. a new jersey mayor is facing some criticism for a memorial honoring fallen veterans at a public library. it shows a soldier leaning down in front of a cross. while a group is calling for it to be taken down not everyone agrees. cbs2's tracee carrasco has more on the controversy. >> reporter: among the tributes to those who have served our country outside veteran memorial library in rozelle park, new jersey. is a silhouette of a soldier kneeling at a cross and now the center of a residents including gregory story. >> it's a very touching memorial. but the problem is, there's a cross in it. which singles out veterans of one religion. >> reporter: paid for and donated by the mayor was installed on july 29th by city workers. and it was a surprise to the board who rents the library. >> the mayor's my boss. we listen to him. it was not put through the board of trustees. >> reporter: story says the memorial violates the separation of church and state.

points in the 60s dominate the hudson valley and look at babylon the dew point at 75. so you know the atmosphere is just primed and ready for some stormy weather. 86 going to feel like 9 will at lunchtime the high of 89 is going to feel like 99. wait a minute that's warmer than it was yesterday. yeah more humidity that's why when you talk about the heat wave ending i mean it's just a matter of degrees. and when you factor in the moisture that's in the atmosphere, it's actually going to be a more challenging day today. a currentsn going on. stray shower exiting the shore. and then you have all this available moisture pushing into ontario right now. down into ohio and all the way down into the gulf bad news for louisiana with more rain in their forecast. our day, hour by hour, looks like this. we see a relatively quiet morning in midday give way to isolated thunderstorms by this afternoon. now gardeners and many homeowners lamenting we still need rain. this will not be widespread activity. the concern is going to be with the kind of lift we have in the

gusty winds and another round of lightning. as we have the storms rumble through. they'll be another batch tonight. so remember that. tuesday night activities you could see a delay or an interruption due to the storms and then another round early tomorrow morning as well. wednesday is a stray shower can't be ruled out. it's really more active today and then we see that change by the end of the week. numbers don't retreat that much. but we are going to see a little break in the form of a less humih stray shower wednesday a stray shower thursday. friday looks good. saturday looks good and then as we wrap up the weekend we're looking at even more humidity sunday into monday. notice the payoff on monday with those widespread storms. the take away for your day today, i would take the umbrella even though everybody won't get a workout with 89. that extra heat and humidity means there'll be some isolated thunderstorms in the area. how about getting around the area? alex. some changes already john in manhattan the fdr drive is

96th streets. that's until 5:00. lingering construction there. still delay free the west side highway also moving well but in linden, new jersey a tractor- trailer fire that has the right and center lanes blocked. it's in the southbound new jersey turnpike truck lanes and stick with the car lanes for a smoother commute. in north hempstead an accident on the westbound side of the l.i.e. at exit 37 blocking two lanes. the flashing lights approaching the scene and alternate side is in effect citywide. be safe, don't text and drive. cindy? thank you. if you were just waking up stories making news this morning. arraignment today for 35-year- old oscar morel of brooklyn. he is charged with second degree murder in saturday's shooting deaths of an imam and his stands in ozone park, queens. police say the motive for the attack is still unclear. in california, an arrest in a fire that's destroyed more than 175 homes and businesses and other structures. it broke out saturday in lake county about 80 miles north of san francisco. 40-year-old damon paschelk is

seven people have now died in the massive flooding in louisiana. the latest victim a man with drowned in baton rouge. torrential rain eased yesterday but some streams are still rising. the governor says the final death toll won't be known for days. new this morning a warning from the nfl to some of its players, agree to be interviewed on the use of performance-enhancing drugs or face suspension. green bay parkers' linebackers peppers and clay matthews are two of four that are being investigated. they now have ten days to and james harrison of the steelers and free agent mike neil of the other two players involved. it's just what mayor de blasio doesn't need. new yorkers making a big stink about the delivery of city services and some neighborhoods there are soaring complaints about garbage not being picked up. cbs2 political reporter marcia kramer explains the city hall's trash trouble. >> reporter: ozone park, queens is a quiet neighborhood that beneath the surface, is a seething caldron of municipal

trash. the city's failure to pick it up. >> you can complain? >> exactly. you can complain but who listens? >> you they the mayor listens? >> no, he would not -- not this manment. >> reporter: but in do complain. the -- many do complain. in number of complaints to the city's hotline as soared this year. a whopping increase of 26% for the first seven months of the year compared to 2015. the first year bill de blasio angry queens residents grumbled the most, 6,436 complaints. residents of ozone park making 573 of them. that doesn't surprise sanitation commissioner katherine garcia. she blames some of the problem on the fact that the department changed the way it collects organic bargain in two district -- garbage in two districts. one in brooklyn and a queens district that includes ozone park. >> as we expanded our

citywide. be safe, don't text and drive. cindy and chris back to you. thank you. breaking news this morning. a fire along the jersey shore has left two men dead. >> flames broke out last night at a house on 14th avenue in belmar. several lowell cool fire departments responded to the call. cbs2's ali bowman joins us live from belmar. >> reporter: belmar police have had the property here blocked off all morning. take a look at the damage here. you can see the structure just burned through the front porch barely recognizable. now the mayor of belmar comi at 212 is thisth avenue. source -- 14th avenue, sources say that was father and son but we don't have the ages yet. the mayor says this is a -- this house is a year-round rental and the fire started at around 99:30 last night and it took crews from five different fire departments to finally put it out. now we don't yet know the cause but flames slatrd you this -- shatrd through windows and left the walls inside charred. now there does appear to be some damage to the home sitting

coming out of the window from the second story there today. now we don't yet know the names of the two victims that died but we'll continue to follow this story throughout the morning. we're live in belmar, ali bowman, cbs2 news. all right thank you. happening today, a court appearance in westchester for a bronx man facing kidnapping and weapons charges. @-year-old johan -- 29-year-old johan ramos is accused of an ducting hiss former girlfriend at gunpoint in the bronx. he sped through yonkers and a in the car. he was found nine hours later hiding in greenburg. now a zika update. governor rick scott confirms that 30 people have been infected now with the zika virus from next bites in -- from mosquito bites in florida. a texas resident has tested positive for the virus who traveled to miami. today mayor de blasio will be joined by congresswoman carolyn maloney at the new york city health lab calling on congress to pass emergency funding to help fight zika.

cbs2's magdalena doris live in front of the queens criminal courthouse with more this morning at kew gardens. >> reporter: murder and criminal possession of a weapon, those are the charges that oscar morel will hear in court today at arraignment. this as the muslim community is anxious to hear the reason behind this attack. walking out of the 107th police precinct, charged with two counts of murder. 35-year-old oscar morel said nothing and gave no explanation for the killings of if imam maulama akonjee assistant tharam uddin. both men were burrowed yesterday and mourn -- buried yesterday and mourners say they know why the friends were killed and they want justice. >> two people got just in ordered and -- just got murdered and nypd is saying this might not be a hate crime. come on somebody is coming from behind and shoot you for no reason? come on this is common sense while there's no motive the top brass says they have strong evidence to back up the

>> reporter: at 1:50 saturday afternoon a hit and run witness and surveillance video placed morel's car at the scene of a crash. moments later, three miles away, police say they found surveillance of morel getting into that same car. after fatally shooting the two men. >> we have just looked at the two cars can they were identical. we -- looked at stickers and decals on each of the wind shields and they seemed the same. >> reporter: a grid search led investigators to morel in brooklyn. their surveillance ended in vehicular assault a arrest. a search of morel's east new york home turned up a gun and clothing that matches the official description of the suspect. the community which suffered great loss will be paying close attention to what happens next. >> what we want is justice. >> we want justice, we want justice! >> reporter: police say morel was involved in a hit and run and assaulted police officers during his arrest. no word on when those charges will come down. live at queens criminal

[ chanting ] residents demonstrated outside the holiday inn at 55th road and maurice avenue last night. they say they don't want a shelter so close to schools and parks. the city says the neighborhood needs a shelter based on the local homeless population. the decision on converting the hotel is expected this fall. an update in the murder case of a 30-year-old queens jogger, dollars combined from the police and gofundme page is now being offered for information that leads to the capture of her kaler. her body was found august 2nd after she went running near the howard beach home and investigators are trying to identify a male dna sample found at the scene, meanwhile officers continue to comb the area. police in milwaukee say it was calm last night after weekend violence triggered by a fatal police-involved shooting. a vigil was held yesterday in

an update to a story we first told you about last week. a stop work order has been issued for a parking lot at a church lucy's church knocked down trees that were part of a meditation garden and plaza which was built more than ten years ago and cost parishioners $2 million. families also had plaques placed with the trees honoring loved ones. work on the lot was stopped because the church didn't have the proper permits. it has not been determined when or if the project will move forward. another glitch shut down computers at dmvs across new jersey on monday. the outage lasted for nearly two hours before being resolved. but the delays caused long

as left two men dead. >> the flames broke out last night in a house on 14th avenue in belmar. several local fire departments responded to the call. cbs2's aioli bowman joins us live from belmar. >> reporter: the investigation continues as to what caused the fire and police have been on scene here all morning and take a look at the damage. you can see the flames were just relentless leaving the front porch here unrecognizable. the mayor of belmar confirming today that at 212 14th avenue. they were father and son sources tell us. we don't know their ages at this time. this house is a year-round rental can after the fire started last night at arounded:30 it cook trues from five -- 9:30 last night it took crews if five different departments to pull it out. the flames peeled paint and shattered through windows and left the -- ate through front beams and left the walls inside charred. now we spoke with one neighbor who says he woke up to smoke. >> i didn't see any flames.

walking out of the 107th police precinct, charged with two counts of murder. 35-year-old oscar morel said nothing and gave no explanation for the killings of imam maulama akonjee and his assistant, tharam uddin. both men were buried yesterday. mourners at their funerals say they know why the friends were killed. and i they want justice. >> two people just got murdered and nypd saying this might not be a hate crime? i would like to ask is it then? come on somebody coming up from behind and shooting you for many no reason. come on this is common sense. >> reporter: the top brass says they've got strong evidence to back up the charges. starting with what happened before the double homicide. at 1:50 saturday afternoon a hit and run witness and surveillance video placed morel's car at the scene of a crash. moments later, three miles away police say they found surveillance of morel getting into that same car after fatally shooting the two men.

in a home in belmar. cbs2's ali bauman is there live with the breaking details. >> reporter: that's right sources tell us the two men killed were father and son and you can see from the damage left behind the flames just store through their -- tore through the front porch here, the mayor of belmar confirming today that two people have died at 212 14th avenue. the mayor says this is a year- round rental. after the fire started at around 9:30 last night, it departments to finally put it out. the cause still under investigation. but the flames peeled paint and shattered through windows and ate through front beams. leaving the walls inside charred. we spoke with one neighbor who says he woke up to smoke. >> i didn't see any flames. what i saw was -- what i saw at that point in time was nothing but a billowing of smoke. you know. column of smoke going up ands the a shame that this has happened -- and it's a shame that that hassen this has happened because again it's one

for the killings of imam maulama akonjee and his assistant, tharam uddin. both men were buried yesterday. mourners at their funerals say they know why the friends were killed. and they want justice. >> two people just got murdered and nypd saying this might not be a hate crime? i would like to ask nypd what is it then? what is it then? come on somebody coming up from behind and shooting you for no reason. imam and his assista. >> reporter: the top brass says they've got strong evidence to back up the charges. starting with what happened before the double homicide. at 1:50 saturday afternoon a hit and run witness and surveillance video placed morel's car at the scene of a crash. moments later, three miles away police say they found surveillance of morel getting into that same car after fatally shooting the two men. >> and we have looked at the two cars and they were identical. we looked at the stickers and decals on each of the

>> reporter: a grid search led investigators to morel in brooklyn. their surveillance ended in vehicular assault and an arrest. a search of morel's east new york home turned up a gun and clothing that matches the official description of the suspect. the community which suffered great loss will be paying close attention to what happens next. >> what we want is justice, we want justice. >> reporter: morel faces two counts of murder and weapons charges at arrai today at queens criminal courthouse, merchandise maryland, news -- magdalena doris, cbs2 news. a protest in queens over a city plan to turn a hotel into a homeless shelter. [ chanting ] residents demonstrated outside the holiday inn on 55th road and maurice avenue last night. they say they don't want a shelter so close to schools and parks. but the city says the neighborhood needs a shelter based on the local homeless population. the decision on converting the

case of a 30-year-old queens jogger, karina vetrano. more than a quarter million dollars combined from police and a gofundme page is now being offered for information that leads to the capture of her killer. her body was found august 2nd after she went running near her howard beach home. investigators are trying to identify a male dna sample at the scene and meanwhile officers continue to comb the wooded area where she was found looking for any new -- claws. police in milwaukee say it was calm last night after weekend fatal police-involved shooting. a vigil questioned was held yesterday. milwaukee's police chief is thanking the city's religious leaders for stepping in. >> they along with various community leaders did an excellent job of seeing to it that the vigil that attracted hundreds of people remained peaceful and a positive message sent to the community. >> police say 23-year-old sylville smith was armed when he was killed by a police officer on saturday afternoon.
