>>reporter: trapped on the second floor, several people in 109 washington avenue in little ferry were saved by firefighters and police around 11:30 last night when the building caught fire. >> driving down the road, and as i was passing this house, i heard a big pop. it was some type of explosion. not sure if it came from the garage or the cars parked in the driveway, then the whole house was engulfed in flames. >>reporter: lieutenant chris bowles says when he he could see was black smoke engulfing the building an he ran to help. >> just started trying to break some windows and victims just start jumping out windows and pulled several people out of the building. >>reporter: you can see dozens of neighbors standing in panic as victims are taken away on stretchers. the lieutenant says fathers were dropping children down to him from the second floor window. >> got a ladder to the second floor, and we were able to pull

damaged in the disaster. more than 30,000 people have been rescued. well, the time is now 4:42. time for traffic and weather on the 2s. let's get over to john elliot. john. >> hey, you know, multiple weather watchers saying some big storms overnight, and, in fact, some just recently, but we're seeing things calm down right now. in fact, as we head up into the hudson valley, dewpoints are up, kristy has 76, but a delightful, beautiful breeze, southwest should turn to a northwest wind. somep through yonkers, 78 in brooklyn and 79 here for the jersey shore, and, yeah, tell you what, watch those rip current postings. but tell you, today not a bad day. we are going to see a little less humidity into the afternoon after we get rid of the morning gray. so watch out. a little bit of fog out the door, some leftover showers. it's light rain now. we've replaced the thunderstorms of the overnight hours, and we are going to see a bit of a break, chance of a shower coming back on thursday.

replace that with a northwest wind later. 76 in white plains and sparta, 80 in babylon, 76 in belmar. so these numbers, it's a little bit warmer on average than it was yesterday. we'll see numbers pretty close to where we were yesterday, but with less humidity. feels good. with that said, it is breezy and muggy right now. we still have dewpoints, again, some of this residual from the rain overnight, but you have dewpoints in the low- to mid- 70s. so definitely a tropical feel. dewpoint on average is five degrees around the area, but it retreats as the numbers climb. 87 into your afternoon hour, close to your high for the day, will feel like around 87 or 88. so that is definitely a win. this is the shower activity, passaic county, intobergen and rockland we'll see some moisture. notice those storms, though, as we look back in time. they have cleared out. we should tap into some dryer air today. the futurecast actually ushers in some sun by the afternoon.

in a wheelchair. officers in leoni says thomas molatesta hit the victim on fort lee road monday morning. he was arrested yesterday after witnesses say he took off from the scene. investigators say the victim has a lot of broken bones and his wheelchair was destroyed. a long island auto mechanic is under arrest this morning after walking into his former work place and firing a gun. the attack came without warning yesterday at county truck and auto in valley stream. after christopher hicks was let go. he allegedly picked up a muffler and smashed it through the rear window of a car came back with a loaded revolver. security cameras appear to show him pulling the trigger, barely missing a former coworker's face. >> i was there then with bullets and god brought me out. >> police arrested hicks shortly after the attack. no injuries were reported. there's concern in union county that someone may be poisoning cats.

paterson avenue, but emergency crews are here on the scene along with police just blocking off rose and trying to make sure residents -- blocking off roads and trying to make sure residents out and about this early hour stay away. this happened about 4:00 this morning. the city says residents may experience a loss of water or low pressure here in this area. they're asking drivers to also avoid this area. there are road closures here as wel here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. this came after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. so unfortunately residents are used to this. as for this latest issue, suez water is responding, but they're not sure exactly when this water main will be repaired, so we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. reporting live in hoboken,

more than 82,000 people told to evacuate as a new wildfire spreads through the drought-ridden canyons east of los angeles. the new fire started yesterday morning and quickly grew to 14 square miles in just hours. flames forcing the closure of a section of interstate 15, the main artery between southern california and las vegas. home after home in san bernardinnt their foundations. fire crews asking people to leave and let them battle the flames. >> this fire is aggressive. we are seeing some very erratic fire behavior. get out so that we can focus on working this fire versus rescuing citizens. >> in the meantime a major fire north of san francisco is losing strength, allowing close to 4,000 people to return home and an arrest made in that fire. a 40-year-old man suspected of arson. this morning authorities in louisiana are searching homes and cars for more potential

this was out in the delaware river valley. we are going to see more scenes like that today. we're going to see a shift in the wind, so you'll see morning clouds give way to a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon and with less humidity in the atmosphere air quality should be good. hey, that's a pretty view, the color trying to break through. no, sir as successful as was this time yesterday morning, but, oh, just you wait, it's coming. and we'll see that shift in the wind bring in some more comfortable air too. winds are up to 17 miles per hour in the park right now, stronger at the area airports, around 25 day. 80 in derry anne. look there, the hot spot in connecticut, 73 in summit and sparta. we have 76 in cranberry down to toms river. dewpoints, though, they're still in the low 70s. so it's very muggy. but they actually are going to be dropping during the day. so as far as the heat index values, going to be a lot closer to the air temperature, 87 would be a repeat from yesterday. pollen is up a bit today. it doesn't retreat that much into your thursday.

more this morning. ali. >>reporter: investigators have been here all morning trying to figure out what started that fire that sent six people to the hospital, including one 5- year-old girl. >> a fire, i got people trapped on the second floor. it'll be a working fire at washington avenue. >>reporter: trapped on the second floor, several people in 109 washington avenue in little ferry were saved by firefighters and the building caught fire. >> driving down the road and as i was passing this house, i heard a big pop. it was some type of explosion. not sure if it came from the garage or the cars parked in the driveway. and then the whole house was engulfed in flames. >>reporter: lieutenant chris bowles says when he arrived all he could see was black smoke engulfing the building and he ran to help. >> just started trying breaking

pull several people out of the building. >>reporter: you can see dozens of neighbors standing in panic as victims are taken away on stretchers. the lieutenant says fathers were dropping children down to him from the second floor window. >> got a ladder to the second floor, and we were able to pull out some people out of the top floor also. >>reporter: flames were out by around 1:30 this morning, but water is still flowing to the building to keep it cool. no word yet on the extent of those six people's injuries. we're live jersey, ali bauman, cbs 2 news. >> ali, thank you. more breaking news in new jersey this morning. >> crews working to repair a ruptured water main in hoboken. cbs 2's andrea grymes has more live from the scene. andrea. >>reporter: well, cindy and chris, a bit of good news from the last time we checked in with you. there was water all over this block. it is quickly receding here on harrison street. we're between first and second streets. a big improvement from just about a half an hour ago.

the communications -- spoke moments ago with the communications director for the city of hoboken. he says crews are working to isolate the water main break here at first and harrison and water pressure should gradually be coming back. this water main break a 16-inch main we're told broke just before 4:00 this morning. the city was warning residents that they may experience a loss of water or low water pressure. we did speak with a few residents just walking up and about early this morning who said they had no or just a few drops, if that. the city is also telling drivers to avoid this area. there are several roads that are also closed. coincidentally, earlier this month the city council here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. this comes after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. so unfortunately residents here in hoboken are pretty used to sights like this one.

low water pressure. they were also telling drivers to avoid this area. but since then paterson avenue has reopened and some of the streets around here are gradually starting to reopen. crews were working to isolate the break, and the city told us that water pressure should gradually be returning to normal. we spoke with a few residents earlier this morning. take a listen. >> got three drops, that's about it. thank god we had water in the refrigerator. if we didn't have that, there would >>reporter: a lot of people here in hoboken are used to scenes like this one. a lot of water main breaks last year an earlier this year. earlier this month, in fact, the city council here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system. back out here live, suez water is here on the scene working to make repairs. there is no estimate yet on exactly when water will be back up and running normally, but
