4:30, 79 degrees on this wednesday, august 17th. a hot day in store, but a little bit of relief whether it comes to the humidity. that's some good news. good morning, i'm chris wragge. >> i'm cindy hsu in for mary calvi. welcome to cbs 2 news this morning. we'll have traffic and weather on the 2s in just a moment. foirs, though, breaking news -- first, though, fi home. firefighters spent the night battling flames and pulling people out of the burning building >> ali bauman joins us this morning live from little ferry. >>reporter: six people were taken to the hospital, one as young as a 5-year-old girl. you can see the fire chief still on scene here just how these people became trapped inside of a burning building. >> fire. extension ladder for me.

>>reporter: trapped on the second floor, several people in 109 washington avenue in little ferry were saved by firefighters and police around 11:30 last night when the building caught fire. >> driving down the road, and as i was passing this house, i heard a big pop. it was some type of explosion. not sure if it came from the garage or the cars parked in the driveway, then the whole house was engulfed in flames. >>reporter: lieutenant chris bowles says when he he could see was black smoke engulfing the building an he ran to help. >> just started trying to break some windows and victims just start jumping out windows and pulled several people out of the building. >>reporter: you can see dozens of neighbors standing in panic as victims are taken away on stretchers. the lieutenant says fathers were dropping children down to him from the second floor window. >> got a ladder to the second floor, and we were able to pull

control by arn 1:30 this morning, but water is still flowing to the big to keep it cool. we're still waiting to hear about the extent of those people's injuries. we're live in little ferry, new jersey, alibauman, cbs 2 news >> ali, thank you. time now 4:32. let's switch gears and get a little traffic and weather on the 2s update this morning. john. >> is hi, chris. so some rain overnight, a leftover shower early this morning, and then a little better today. i mean, it's still going to be hot, but it shouldn't be as humid. showers right now, it's a li into sussex, down into morris county. had some thunderstorms earlier and last night. that's starting to wind down. we should see a shift in the winds, and that will usher in lower dewpoints. so your heat index values will actually retreat appreciatably today. high of 87 will feel like around 87 to maybe 90, so that's definitely an improvement over yesterday. how about the next few days? well, it's kind of give an take. but right now before you take off, listen to alex. >>reporter: thank you, john.

us. if you are traveling in manhattan, some changes for you. that ongoing construction on the fdr drive has it closed in both directions between 61th and 96th streets. that's until about 5:00 this morning. so you have another half hour. traffic being detoured to the avenues. no major delays yet. in paramus, new jersey, route 17 is closed as you make your way northbound for some construction between century road and midland avenue. traffic being detoured around the closure there. we also have reports of flooding on route 17 near paramus road in bridgewood. no delays at the george close for construction. this also is until 5:00 this morning. the lincoln and holland tunnels are clear. alternate side parking, it's in effect city wide. be safe, don't text and drive. cindy, back to you. >> alex, thank you. breaking news in new jersey this morning, a large water main has ruptured in hoboken. water is gushing at first and harrison streets. drivers are urged to avoid the area because of road closures. hoboken residents may have a loss of water or low pressure. we'll have a live report from hoboken in our next half hour. now to an update on that

travelers in turmoil yesterday. >> this morning the power is back and the airlines are working to get everyone where they need to be. cbs 2's andrea grymes has more. >>reporter: lights out, luggage piled up, after power problems at jfk's terminal 8. many passengers trying to fly out last night had to reschedule for today. >> they transferred me to laguardia at 6:00 in the morning. i have no ground transportation, no hotel, i'm on my own. >>reporter: the issues began sometime with a momentary interruption of electricity, not uncommon in summer months. but as power came back on, two out of four transformers at terminal 8 overloaded. >> fun, huh? >> yeah, a blast. there's no a.c. which helps too, you know, and then there was nobody to talk to either because all of the customer service places were, like, empty. >>reporter: escalators stopped, baggage carousels froze and baggage sat unscreened at checkpoints. to make matters worse, the outage hit as the airport was

related delays. power problems led to even more canceled and delayed flights. >> and i saw everybody coming out there all saying it was pitch black, they couldn't see nz. >>reporter: it has not been an easy few days for passengers at terminal 8. sunday night the terminal was evacuated after a false report of an active shooter. turned out someone had overreacted to olympics fans celebrating one of the events on television. >> american airlines saying thousands of passengers were affected by that power outage. the family of the her final steps during a memorial walk yesterday. hundreds of people walked with karina vetrano's family and released balloons in her honor. the 30-year-old was strangled in a marshy area near her home. now her parents are pleading for the killer to come forward. >> turn yourself in. i will make sure that reward money goes to the person of your choice. >> he's a weak, evil piece of [

>> the nypd is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. the family has raised nearly $250,000 with go fund me. new this morning the search for two purse snatchers in queens, surveillance video surveillance video of the suspects released just last friday. they eadlely knock down a 38- year-old woman at main street and 37th avenue in flushing an grabbed her purse. items inside included an apple ipad, $30 in cash, credit cards. police say they used a card at a mcdonald's and two su police are still looking for the man who gave a 90-year- old woman the scare of her life. francis tomaelli returned home from church on sunday an found a man inside her bronx apartment scpiet an exterior lock -- despite an exterior lock gate. >> i was in the living room, he was standing right there and i was in shock. and i said what are you doing here? he said give me your money. >> the elderly woman did not want to show her face. she says she gave the thief all the money she had on her, a total of $40.

damaged in the disaster. more than 30,000 people have been rescued. well, the time is now 4:42. time for traffic and weather on the 2s. let's get over to john elliot. john. >> hey, you know, multiple weather watchers saying some big storms overnight, and, in fact, some just recently, but we're seeing things calm down right now. in fact, as we head up into the hudson valley, dewpoints are up, kristy has 76, but a delightful, beautiful breeze, southwest should turn to a northwest wind. somep through yonkers, 78 in brooklyn and 79 here for the jersey shore, and, yeah, tell you what, watch those rip current postings. but tell you, today not a bad day. we are going to see a little less humidity into the afternoon after we get rid of the morning gray. so watch out. a little bit of fog out the door, some leftover showers. it's light rain now. we've replaced the thunderstorms of the overnight hours, and we are going to see a bit of a break, chance of a shower coming back on thursday.

replace that with a northwest wind later. 76 in white plains and sparta, 80 in babylon, 76 in belmar. so these numbers, it's a little bit warmer on average than it was yesterday. we'll see numbers pretty close to where we were yesterday, but with less humidity. feels good. with that said, it is breezy and muggy right now. we still have dewpoints, again, some of this residual from the rain overnight, but you have dewpoints in the low- to mid- 70s. so definitely a tropical feel. dewpoint on average is five degrees around the area, but it retreats as the numbers climb. 87 into your afternoon hour, close to your high for the day, will feel like around 87 or 88. so that is definitely a win. this is the shower activity, passaic county, intobergen and rockland we'll see some moisture. notice those storms, though, as we look back in time. they have cleared out. we should tap into some dryer air today. the futurecast actually ushers in some sun by the afternoon.

tomorrow morning, a few more thunderstorms return. right now the model focus is to the south, and then we see a stray shower during the morning tomorrow. look at that, could even see an isolated thunderstorm. not a lot of coverage tomorrow, but showers back in the forecast for your thursday, and then friday -- friday is going to be a warmer day today -- a warmer day, and then we work into friday night into saturday, we see the humidity return. so we're definitely not done with this yet. we get a bit of a break today, stray storm tomorrow, in better friday into saturday, then saturday night into sunday, that's when you're really going to feel the heat and humidity again, so we wrap up the weekend with some storms into the first part of next week. first part of your ride and drive now, here's alex. >>reporter: good morning, john. good morning, everyone. if you're traveling in manhattan, the fdr drive is closed for construction in both directions between 61th and 96th streets. that's another 15 minutes until 5:00 or so. traffic being detour to the avenues. the west side highway moving well in both directions. in paramus, new jersey, route

oo cases. 59 of them are pregnant women. one baby was born with microcephaly because of the virus. a new cbs news poll shows 64% of americans are concerned about a large outbreak in the u.s. but most don't think it's likely that they or a family member will become infected. and 64% of americans don't think that government is prepare for a large outbreak. well, a familiar face to cbs 2 viewers, long time political talk show host john since 1982 he host the syndicated show "the mclaughlin group." in 34 years he missed only one episode is, this past sunday. before tv he was a speech writer for president richard nixon. he was also a jesuit priest. mclaughlin was 89 years old. 25 years after violent riots on the streets of crown heights, a decision to commemorate the date with a

crown heights was a beehive of activity, youngsters visiting from a rockaway day camp eating lunch. sunday it will turn into a whole lot more, a community festival to mark the 25th anniversary of the crown heights riots. the festival promises fun for all ages with food, music, rides and even arts and crafts, but some say it's an insensitive way to recognize one of the worst race riots in the city's history. >> my mother was disgust. it's just not fair to her. it's true brother, -- i lost a brother, but she lost a child. it's totally inappropriate. >>reporter: norman rosenbaum's brother was stabbed to death in the 1991 riot that is erupted after a car and a motorcade calling the accidentally struck a 7-year-old chiel, gavin caddo who was black. >> people took advantage of a motorcycle vehicle accident.

in a wheelchair. officers in leoni says thomas molatesta hit the victim on fort lee road monday morning. he was arrested yesterday after witnesses say he took off from the scene. investigators say the victim has a lot of broken bones and his wheelchair was destroyed. a long island auto mechanic is under arrest this morning after walking into his former work place and firing a gun. the attack came without warning yesterday at county truck and auto in valley stream. after christopher hicks was let go. he allegedly picked up a muffler and smashed it through the rear window of a car came back with a loaded revolver. security cameras appear to show him pulling the trigger, barely missing a former coworker's face. >> i was there then with bullets and god brought me out. >> police arrested hicks shortly after the attack. no injuries were reported. there's concern in union county that someone may be poisoning cats.

she says it was playful and fine hours earlier. she says she's worried there was foul play. >> i'm the only one that's got the nerve to say something to somebody. but, you know, he was a little cat, he was so cute and loveable. it's not fair. >> police are investigating. hafner says she had a second cat that died last november and the humane society told her that cat had been poisoned. money troubles in paterson, new jersey could hit drivers hard. a proposed ticketing blitz is part of the plan to supplement a source tells cbs 2 the budget includes putting $3 million back into the city by issuing 30,000 traffic tickets per year. that's about 80 tickets a day. >> they ticket us for everything now, everything. you can be walk down the street or standing on the corner waiting for a taxi and you're going to get a ticket loitering. >> where are you supposed to be able to drop off the handicap or people with infants? >> the money woas don't mean just more tickets. some 30 summer camps were closed earlier this year and

paterson avenue, but emergency crews are here on the scene along with police just blocking off rose and trying to make sure residents -- blocking off roads and trying to make sure residents out and about this early hour stay away. this happened about 4:00 this morning. the city says residents may experience a loss of water or low pressure here in this area. they're asking drivers to also avoid this area. there are road closures here as wel here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. this came after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. so unfortunately residents are used to this. as for this latest issue, suez water is responding, but they're not sure exactly when this water main will be repaired, so we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. reporting live in hoboken,

this was out in the delaware river valley. we are going to see more scenes like that today. we're going to see a shift in the wind, so you'll see morning clouds give way to a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon and with less humidity in the atmosphere air quality should be good. hey, that's a pretty view, the color trying to break through. no, sir as successful as was this time yesterday morning, but, oh, just you wait, it's coming. and we'll see that shift in the wind bring in some more comfortable air too. winds are up to 17 miles per hour in the park right now, stronger at the area airports, around 25 day. 80 in derry anne. look there, the hot spot in connecticut, 73 in summit and sparta. we have 76 in cranberry down to toms river. dewpoints, though, they're still in the low 70s. so it's very muggy. but they actually are going to be dropping during the day. so as far as the heat index values, going to be a lot closer to the air temperature, 87 would be a repeat from yesterday. pollen is up a bit today. it doesn't retreat that much into your thursday.

more this morning. ali. >>reporter: investigators have been here all morning trying to figure out what started that fire that sent six people to the hospital, including one 5- year-old girl. >> a fire, i got people trapped on the second floor. it'll be a working fire at washington avenue. >>reporter: trapped on the second floor, several people in 109 washington avenue in little ferry were saved by firefighters and the building caught fire. >> driving down the road and as i was passing this house, i heard a big pop. it was some type of explosion. not sure if it came from the garage or the cars parked in the driveway. and then the whole house was engulfed in flames. >>reporter: lieutenant chris bowles says when he arrived all he could see was black smoke engulfing the building and he ran to help. >> just started trying breaking

pull several people out of the building. >>reporter: you can see dozens of neighbors standing in panic as victims are taken away on stretchers. the lieutenant says fathers were dropping children down to him from the second floor window. >> got a ladder to the second floor, and we were able to pull out some people out of the top floor also. >>reporter: flames were out by around 1:30 this morning, but water is still flowing to the building to keep it cool. no word yet on the extent of those six people's injuries. we're live jersey, ali bauman, cbs 2 news. >> ali, thank you. more breaking news in new jersey this morning. >> crews working to repair a ruptured water main in hoboken. cbs 2's andrea grymes has more live from the scene. andrea. >>reporter: well, cindy and chris, a bit of good news from the last time we checked in with you. there was water all over this block. it is quickly receding here on harrison street. we're between first and second streets. a big improvement from just about a half an hour ago.

the communications -- spoke moments ago with the communications director for the city of hoboken. he says crews are working to isolate the water main break here at first and harrison and water pressure should gradually be coming back. this water main break a 16-inch main we're told broke just before 4:00 this morning. the city was warning residents that they may experience a loss of water or low water pressure. we did speak with a few residents just walking up and about early this morning who said they had no or just a few drops, if that. the city is also telling drivers to avoid this area. there are several roads that are also closed. coincidentally, earlier this month the city council here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. this comes after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. so unfortunately residents here in hoboken are pretty used to sights like this one.

prosecutors say saturday he gunned down queens imam maulama akonjee and his close friend and assistant. he's also accused of hitting bicyclist david hunter less than a mile away as he fled the murder scene. now, hunter was able to give police part of the license plate number and police tracked down morell. >> he was in his face, you know, he had a sign this person who is not under control. >> the district attorney says the motive is if convicted morell faces up to life in prison without parole. a last ditch toaster save a 100-year-old brooklyn church from demolition. the save our lady of loretta campaign wants the city to designate the brownsville church a landmark. it was built by italian immigrants in 1908, closed in 2009. in june the brooklyn diocese filed an application to demolish the church, to build affordable housing. >> we have enough affordable housing. what we don't have enough of is

low water pressure. they were also telling drivers to avoid this area. but since then paterson avenue has reopened and some of the streets around here are gradually starting to reopen. crews were working to isolate the break, and the city told us that water pressure should gradually be returning to normal. we spoke with a few residents earlier this morning. take a listen. >> got three drops, that's about it. thank god we had water in the refrigerator. if we didn't have that, there would >>reporter: a lot of people here in hoboken are used to scenes like this one. a lot of water main breaks last year an earlier this year. earlier this month, in fact, the city council here approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system. back out here live, suez water is here on the scene working to make repairs. there is no estimate yet on exactly when water will be back up and running normally, but

reporting live in hoboken this morning, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news >> andrea, thank you. new this morning, police are asking for your help identifying this man wanted in connection to a bank robbery in manhattan. they say he struck five times, three times at the same midtown investors bank. the robberies started in early april. the last one taking place yesterday at the san handler bank in chelsea. no details with how much this crook made off with. new york city leaders are taking more steps to fight the zika virus. parenthood and the new york state nurses association to announce recommendations to protect residents from the virus. this comes as new numbers show the impact of zika in our area. federal health officials say there are now more than 480zika cases in the city. 49 of them are pregnant women. one baby was born with microcephaly because of the virus. a new cbs news poll shows 64% of americans are concerned about a large outbreak in the u.s., but most don't think it's

and 64% of americans don't think the government is prepare for a large outbreak. well, long island auto mechanic is under arrest this morning after an attack that could have been much more deadly or could have been deadly, rather. after christopher hicks was let go by county truck and auto in valley stream, he allegedly picked up a muffler and smashed it through the rear window of a car he was working on. he then went to his own car and came back with a loaded revolver. security cameras show him pulling the missing a former coworker's face. no injuries were reported. more than 80,000 people have been told to evacuate as wildfire spreads through the drought-ridden canyons of eastern los angeles. the new fire started yesterday morning and quickly grew to 14 square miles in just hours. flames forcing the closure of a section of interstate 15, the main artery between southern california and las vegas. in the meantime a major fire north of san francisco is losing strength, allowing close to 4,000 people to return home. an arrest has been made in that
