hill road at 4:00 p.m. yesterday and foup the body of its resident, 63-year-old elizabeth cullen outside. the suffolk county homicide department was called in to investigate and less than two hours later police arrest elizabeth's son, dennis. >> when we were processing the scene, again, we arrived approximately 4:15 p.m. while we were processing the scene, that's when he returned to the scene and we placed him unarrest meal and approximately 5:50 p.m. it was his own indication that he resisted arrest. >>reporter: dennis cullen spent the night in the precinct and is expected to be arraigned later today. we're live in loi harbor, new york, ali bauman, cbs 2 news >> ali, thank you. police on the hunt for a man who tried to rob an off- duty cop in the bronx. it happened just before 7:00 last night on clinton avenue near crotona park. police say the man tried to grab some necklaces from the officer's neck. there was a struggle, and the officer fired one shot. police say the robber was not

questioning about claims they were robbed in rio early sunday morning. yesterday a brazilian judge issued orders to seize the passports of gold medalist ryan lochte an jimmy fagan after seeing this video obtained by the daily mail. it shows the four athletes returning to the village sunday morning after the robbery. the judge says the athletes do not appear shake isen up and offer conflicting details of what happened. lochte's father says his son has already returned to the u.s. back here at home an update on the little ferry fire, officials say a 5-year- old girl an her grandmother have both died from their injuries. the flames raced through a three-story multi-family home on washington avenue late tuesday night. a police lieutenant who happened to be driving by grabbed a neighbor's ladder to rescue people. at least five others were taken to the hospital. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. police are on the verge of charging a career criminal with rape. the man allegedly attacked a woman near a subway station and

help. cbs 2's tracy carasco has the new detail from bushwick. >>reporter: a 52-year-old man now in police custody for allegedly raping and robbing a 27-year-old woman at knifepoint. around 2:30 tuesday morning after stalking her as she got off the j train at the kiej station. police say the man ran away with her cell phone and cash after telling the victim, don't tell police or i'll kill you. but an unusual break in the case this morning when the suspect himself called a pay phone. >> they get there. as the officers are talking to him, he says what i really want is a ride to the train. ly want my cop said, well, we don't give rides to the train. >>reporter: the officers knowing the suspect's description, recognized him by his distinct red sneakers and agreed to give him a ride straight to the 83rd police precinct. >> the officers right officers realized this is the guy. they said, well, listen, we'll give you a ride, but we have a

american swimmers were expected to give statements today about the gunpoint robbery they reported over the weekend >> yesterday two swimmers were pull off a u.s.-bound plane and questioned. cbs 2's meg baker joins us live from the newsroom with the latest. meg. >>reporter: chris and andrea, now the olympic swimming competition is over, but instead of coming home to celebrate their achievements, like you said, two swimmers were pull off a plane to be interrogated by authorities. there is little evidence to support their story that they were rob this is video of u.s. swimmers, including ryan lochte returning to the olympic village around 7:00 a.m. on sunday morning. in this video from the daily mail, you can see the teammates go through security to get back inside. the athletes claimed they were rob at gunpoint in a taxi that night by thieves posing as police police officers, as they returned from a party at francis hospitality house. >> they pulled us over, they pull out their guns, they told

>>reporter: but a brazilian judge says the swimmers' stories aren't matching up and ordered their passports seized. lochte claims they were robbed by one person who stole $400 from him. jimmy fagan says they were robbed by several people. the judge also noted that the swimmers do not appear shaken in this security video is. the international olympic committee also has questions. >> all i can tell you -- i mean, all i messaged and they said it was lochte and it wasn't true, so i guess the story may change, but i can only tell you you need to go to yusap to get the facts. i'm just purely passing them from a spokesman. >>reporter: lochte was able to return to the u.s. but this was jack conger and gunnar bentz last night. they were taken off their u.s.- bound train and -- plane in

investigation is her son. take a look at 23-year-old dennis cullen, charged with second-degree murder after police found his mother, 63- year-old elizabeth cullen dead outside of their home, believed to be intentionally drowned in her own back yard pool. lloyd harbor police were responding to a request to check on the home at 70 white hill road at 4:00 p.m. yesterday and found elizabeth cullen's body outside. the suffolk county homicide department was called in to investigate and less than two hours later police arrested elizabeth's son, scene, again, we arrived approximately 4:15 p.m. while we were processing the scene, that's when he returned to the scene, and we placed him under arrest immediately and that was at approximately 5:50 p.m. it was his own indication that he resisted arrest. >>reporter: police say both mother and son lived in this home, but last night dennis spent the night in the precinct, and he's expected to be arraigned later today n. lloyd harbor, new york, ali bauman, cbs 2 news >> ali, thank you.

it happened just before 7:00 last night on clinton avenue near crotona park. police say the man tried to grab some necklaces from the officer's neck. there was a struggle, and the officer fired one shot. police say the robber was not hit and ran off. happening today, a court appearance for a man accused of randomly slashing a woman's face in chelsea. 41-year-old kerry moore is charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon. police say surveillance video captured his attack on 24-year- old amanda mri other slash isings. his lawyers have indicated they may pursue a psychiatric defense. an update on the little ferry fire we told you about yesterday. officials now say a 5-year-old girl and her grandmother have died from their injuries. the flames raced through a three-story multi-family home on washington avenue late tuesday night. a police lieutenant who happened to be driving by grabbed a neighbor's ladder to rescue people. at least five others were taken to the hospital.

under investigation. an unusual break in a brooklyn rape case leads to a suspect. he's accused of raping and robbing a 27-year-old woman at knifepoint early tuesday as she got off the j train in bushwick. now, police say yesterday the suspect actually called 911 from a pay phone and asked for a ride to a train. when cops responded, they recognized his red sneakers from the victim's description. >> the officers realized this is the guy. they said, well, listen, we'll give you a ride, but we have a policy, department policy that we car unless we know what you have in your pockets. so do you have anything that can harm us? and he says i have a knife and pulled it out from his back pocket. >> the suspect is a level 3 sex offender. he has 14 prior arrests for robbery, drug possession, possession of stolen property and criminal mischief. he also spent 17 years in prison for rape. muslim leaders gathered in jamaica, queens to once again call for justice following the shooting deaths of an imam and

riders. i'll have the details about that coming up. alternate side parking, it is in effect city wide. be safe, don't text and drive. andrea and chris, back to you >> alex, thank you. our top story this morning, an affluent long island community is stunned by what police are calling a woman's intentional drowning. >> the accused killer, her son. cbs 2's ali bauman has more live from lloyd harbor this morning. ali. >>reporter: well, police in this neighborhood not used to violent crime, but now they're investigating the death of a mother found in this back yard and their main suspect is her 23-year-old dennis cullen charged with second-degree mur after police found his mother, 63-year-old elizabeth cullen dead outside of their home, believed to be intentionally drowned in her own back yard pool. lloyd harbor police were responding to a request to check on the home at 70 white hill road at 4:00 p.m. yesterday and found elizabeth cullen's body outside. the suffolk county homicide department was called in to investigate and less than two hours later police arrested elizabeth's son, dennis.

intentional drowning. lloyd harbor responded to the scene and found the deceased who was later determined to be elizabeth cullen in the back yard. the evidence suggested that she was intentionally drown as the call indicated. while we were processing the scene, the suspect returned to the home and we placed him under arrest. >>reporter: police say dennis did not resist arrest and he's expected to be arraigned in courtat ali bauman, cbs 2 news >> ali, thank you. at the olympics three american swimmers are expected to give statements to brazilian police today about the gunpoint robbery they reported over the weekend. >> yesterday two swimmers were pulled off a u.s.-bound plane and questioned. cbs 2's meg baker joins us live in the newsroom with more. meg. >>reporter: chris and andrea, drama outside of the pool, instead of coming home to celebrate the team's achievements, few swimmers were detained for interrogation by brazilian authorities who say

members of the team were robbed at gunpoint. this is video of u.s. swimmers, including ryan lochte returning to the olympic village around 7:00 a.m. on sunday morning. in this video from the daily mail, you can see the teammates go through security to get back inside. the athletes claimed they were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi that night by thieves posing as police officers as they returned from a party at >> they pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. >>reporter: but a brazilian judge says the swimmer's stories aren't matching up and ordered their passports seized. lochte claims they were robbed by one person who stole $400 from him, jimmy feigen says they were robbed by several people. the judge also noted that the swimmers do not appear shaken in this security video is.

the oasis cafe in flushing last thursday just after 3:00 in the morning. the suspect allegedly went in through a back door, got into a locked room and made off with about $30,000 in cash an checks. a stunning twist in the disappearance of a linden, new jersey mother. a woman considered a friend and accused accomplice are now charged with her murder. on tuesday police found the body of 41-year-old ty rhode island ta julius in the back yard of a long branch home. she vanished in march four months after bei gunfire as she sat in her car. yesterday jennifer sweeney and andre harris were charged with first-degree murder. prosecutors say they'll also be charged in the shooting. happening today the man accused of hurling a suspicious package into a police van near times square last month is due to face a judge is. 52-year-old hector minesus has gone through a psychiatric evaluation and has been in police custody since the incident. two police officers were on patrol on july 20th when

police found his mother, 63- year-old elizabeth cullen dead outside of their home, believed to be intention isly drowned in her own back yard pool. lloyd harbor police were responding to a request to check on the home at 70 white hill road, 4:00 p.m. yesterday and found elizabeth cullen's body outside. the suffolk county homicide department was called in to investigate and less than two hours later police arrested elizabeth's son, dennis. >> when we were processing the approximately 4:15 p.m. while we were processing the scene, that's when he returned to the scene and we placed him under arrest immediately, and that was at approximately 5:50 p.m. of his own indication, he resisted arrest. >>reporter: now, police say dennis did not resist arrest. they do say that both son and mother lived in this home, but last night dennis spent the night at the precinct. he is expected to be arraigned in court later today. stick with cbs, we'll be following this story as it develops throughout the day.

france's hospitality house. >> they pulled us over, they pulled out their guns. they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. >>reporter: but a brazilian judge says the swimmers' stories aren't matching up and ordered their passports seized. lochte claims they were robbed by one person who stole $400 from him. jimmy feigen says they were robbed by several people. the judge also noted that the swimmers do not appear shaken in this security video. the international olympic committee also has questions. >> i messaged and they said they spoke to lochte and it wasn't true. so i guess the story may change. >>reporter: lochte was able to return to the u.s., but this was jack conger and gunnar bentz last night. they were taken off their u.s.- bound plane and detained in brazil, but later released, and their lawyer says they will not be allowed to leave the country until they provide testimony

the lawyer for the two says they will cooperate with brazilian authorities. feigen plans to make further statements on the incident later today. lochte is sticking with his story, posting on social media that everything he said is true. now, his attorney says brazilian officials are just trying to deflect criticism of problems at the rio games. live in the newsroom, meg baker, cbs 2 news. >> all right, meg, thank you. police are on the hunt for a man who robbed an off-duty cop in the bronx. it happened just before 7:00 l near crotona park. police say the man grabbed some necklaces the officer was wearing, there was a struggle, and the officer fired off one shot. police say the robber was not hit and did run off. happening today, a court appearance for a man accused of randomly slashing a woman's face in chelsea. 41-year-old kerry breezemore is charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon. police say surveillance video captured his attack on 24-year- old amanda morris back in january.

his lawyers have indicated they may pursue a psychiatric defense. an update on the little ferry fire we told you about yesterday. officials say a 5-year-old girl and her grandmother have both died from their injuries. the flames raced through a three-story, multi-family home on washington avenue late tuesday night. a police lieutenant who happened to be driving by grabbed a neighbor's ladder to rescue people. at least five other people were taken to the hospital. the cause of this fire is under investigation. an arrest this morning unusual break in the case. 52-year-old michael mann is accused of raping and robbing a woman at knifepoint early tuesday as she got off a j train in bushwick. now, police say mann called 911 from a pay phone and asked for a ride to a train. when police responded, they recognized his right sneakers from the victim's description. >> the officers realized this is the guy. they said, well, listen, we'll give you a ride, but we have a policy, a department policy that we don't let someone get

you have in your pockets, so do you have anything that can harm us? and he says i have a knife and pulled it out from his back pocket. >> well, mann is a level 3 sex offender. he's got 14 prior arrests for robbery, drug possession, possession of stolen property and criminal mischief. he also spent 17 years in prison for rape. muslim leaders gathered in jamaica, queens to once again call for justice following the shooting deaths of an imam and his assistant. the leaders want the murders imam maulana akonjee and that area uddin were killed saturday afternoon after leaving their mosque in ozone park. oscar morel is charged in the murders. police have not yet determined his motive. a shortage of rest areas on interstates in new jersey is forcing truck drivers to stop in places officials say may not be safe. in mawagh we saw several trucks parked on the shoulder of interstate 287 just minutes from the new york state line. experts say it's a tragedy waiting to happen. you can see the highway
