live from studio 56 this is cbs2 this morning. august 19th, a warm end to the week and a chance for some showers this afternoon. good morning, i'm chris wragge. >> and i'm andrea grymes. mary calvi is off. welcome to cbs2 news this morning. we'll have traffic and weather on the 2's in just a moment. >> first the u.s. olympic committee has ap brazil following reports that olympic swimmer ryan lochte lied about a late night robbery in rio. >> a brazilian official says he fabricated those claims that he and three other u.s. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint. here's what authorities say really happened. >> brazilian officials spent the past few days trying to piece together what really happened on sunday morning. this video shows the four u.s.

around 6 a.m. >> we have evidence that demonstrate that is very, very improbable that the incident is a robbery situation. >> police say the americans including ryan lochte damaged a bathroom door and urinated in an alley, which is why security got involved. this video shows the swimmers at a gas station getting into a taxi, but minutes later a security guard with a gun orders the group out of one swimmer appears to remove his wallet. another briefly raises his hands. from another angle we see what happens next. a third-party steps in to translate as the athletes are told to sit on a curb. police say the swimmers handed over money to repair a bathroom door. they also say a gun was pointed at the swimmers. so part of lochte's story checks out.

injured when the fire tore through two homes and damaged five others in the st. george section. cbs2's ali bauman joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: residents standing here last night said they felt helpless as they watched hundreds of firefighters try to save their homes for more than three hours. >> tearing through wood and clouding the streets of this staten island neighborhood on were covering their nose and mouth as flames ripped through seven buildings destroying two of them. >> i see all the medical care smoke. >> it took them three hours to get under control and left 42 people homeless. >> these houses are so connected together and the landlords are putting so many people in these houses there's no room. >> firefighters were forced to cut power as these engulfed

latoya samuels believed it started on her porch around 6 p.m. >> my daughter grabbed her little sister. i grabbed the three boys and we started running down the streps. >> with power lines close by and smoke heavy, 21 of the 250 responding firefighters were injured. >> debilitating on our firefighters. very debilitating on the residents. >> it's hard to breathe. >> today investigators still trying to determine what caused this fire, but right now t suspicious. we're live in the st. george section of staten island, ali bauman cbs2 news. a long island woman is set to be arraigned on animal torture charges after one of her dogs died from heat exposure. louise hanitz left her two dogs in the sun on her balcony. someone noticed the dogs on monday and called police. one of the dogs died. it's unclear how long the dogs were left outside. police on the hunt for a

officers with a k-9 dog were trying to track the man down yesterday in riverside park. that's a few blocks from the crime scene. police say a good samaritan was slashed in the arm when he tried to break up a fight between the suspect and a father with a small child. the victim's injury was not serious. to campaign 2016 now, donald trump appears at a rally in michigan a day after dramatically changing his tone on the campaign trail, admitting he's been >> sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. i have done that. believe it or not, i regret it. >> also, trump campaign manager

scandal. failing to disclose such activities is against federal law. hillary clinton met with law enforcement officers here in new york yesterday saying that the nation needs to repair rifts between police officers and the communities they serve. new questions this morning about a $400 million u.s. payment to iran. the state department now admits the payment was directly linked to release of four american that appears to contradict -- the cash belonged to iran and had been held by the u.s. since the 1970s. an international tribunal ruled the u.s. had to pay it back. >> given the fact that iran hadn't proved completely trustworthy in the past, it would have been imprudent and irresponsible to not since we knew this payment was coming and coming soon to not hold it up until we made sure we had our americans out. >> republican presidential candidate donald trump says

skies skies, relative humidity at 86%. 77 degrees, clear skies and 77 in brooklyn. left us this comment, just love when the sky is the azure blue color, mother nature at her best. those beautiful blue skies finally showed themselves yesterday afternoon. it's going to be a partly cloudy day but ultimately not a bad one with a slight chance for showers this afternoon. live outside, clear, 75, wednesday, temperatures range from 64 in monticello and the hamptons up to 76 for sparta and edison. so a nice stretch there across the region. dew points, we love to show you these to give you an idea of how much moisture is in the atmosphere. the higher the dew point, the more moisture. as we get into the mid and upper 60s that's when we start to feel it. in the low 70s that gets into the oppressive range. today it will be humid out there. we may see these numbers drop

afternoon. nonetheless, getting a little bit more sticky. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, a few clouds overhead. a little shower activity for southern ocean county. as we roll through the day, expect a chance for showers, but here's going to be the main event for your weekend. this cold front out to the west rolls through late sunday into monday. very likely late sunday you'll be dealing with showers and thunderstorms, but by monday the payoff is big time. this is a huge area of high pressure with much cooler and the midweek forecast, in fact, the early week forecast now looking sensational. hour by hour, here's what you can expect. a few more clouds this afternoon, and a very slight chance of a stray shower. overnight skies partially clear. then tomorrow with more of an onshore flow. there's a slightly better bet for showers and storms tomorrow. sunday it is not going to be a complete washout, but certainly a very cloudy day overall, and

morning update. the u.s. olympic committee is apologizing for the distracting ordeal involving olympic swimmer roy yan lochte and three teammates. they claimed they were robbed at gunpoint in rio. brazilian police say the swimmers vandalized a gas station bathroom and were not robbed. a staten island fire has destroyed two homes and damaged five others. it happened last night in the st. george section. two residents were hurt when seriously 21 firefighters also well. the search continues for a slasher on the upper west side. officers a k-9 were trying to track the man down yesterday in riverside park. a good samaritan was slashed in the arm when he tried to break up a fight between the suspect and another man. the injury was not serious. on money watch, stock futures lower this morning after shares posted modest gains on thursday. a continuing rebound in oil prices gave energy companies a lift. the dow jones industrial

composite added eleven. new yorkers say they have had enough of the dangerous potholes and rough roads. people want to know why they have to put up with third world streets. >> the roads here in new york city are horrible. >> i've lived here 40 years and i've never seen the streets as bad as they are now. >> dave carlin took your complaints to the department of transportation commissioner polly trottenburg. >> we know frustrated. at a certain point we will come back and e resurface. >> would you say this is acceptable? >> i would say i wish this road were in better condition. >> along with heavy everyday use, the city's 6,000 miles of road get torn up by construction projects, construction contractors are required to make repairs. still commissioner trottenberg says the d.o.t. repaved 1300 miles of roadway lanes last year and will fix about the same amount this year. a warning for new jersey

police say a serial flasher is trying to lure children into his car. scott rappaport reports from union county. >> fear and concern on the streets of roselle park. >> this is disgusting, you know. it's outrageous. >> police say a man has been driving around and exposing himself to young children. they say the first incident happened here in the area of warren avenue. a man driving up to two females seven and nine years ld and exposing himself. cops say it happened again in the area of amsterdam avenue. this after a man called eleven- year-old female to the car. police say in each case the children ran away. >> that's sick. that's horrific. that's traumatizing to a young girl to see that. that's horrible. >> roselle park police say the incidents are similar to to others in the sunny side

a candlelight vigil last night in marine park brooklyn for two victims of a hit and run. a husband killed, his wife critically injured. >> the driver who struck them is still on the loose. more now from. >> the loss of a father and brother, angel sagardia is the kind of man everybody looked up to. he got this tattoo of a cross in his brother's name right after sagardia and samantha were struck by a van on flatbush avenue friday night. samantha left in critical condition, sagardia himself killed. >> i never knew how much love he had until this tragedy i see all his friends, they're like family. >> in a surveillance picture, you can see the driver of the van fleeing the scene. that van discovered august 13th, the next day after a tip police setting up these signs as they look for the driver

we have a long line of traffic trying to make their way through the scene. two residents are injured and several families are now homeless after a devastating fire on staten island. >> nearly two dozen firefighters were also hurt battling the flames that destroyed two homes and damaged five others in the st. george section. cbs2's ali bauman joins us live from the scene. ali. >> andrea and chris, the street here is still littered with ha yesterday's fire melted the siding of some of these homes. today nearly 12 hours later firefighters still have the street blocked off. >> tearing through wood and clouding the streets of the staten island neighborhood on thursday evening, neighbors of benziger avenue were covering their noses and mouths as flames ripped through seven buildings destroying two of them. >> i see all the smoke and i'm like oh, my god. >> the 6 alarm fire spread quickly. it took fdny three hours to get

vacant apartments were robbed. monday's fire forced 100 people out of the homes. during the search for survivors, firefighters removed all the apartment doors. thieves have raided six apartments. a translator described what was stolen from one of the apartments. >> it was about$3000, his living room tv and his shoes and some clothes. >> the building's owner says a security guard was on duty a sliding glass door and two windows blown out of a house in clark, new jersey. the homeowner says he was drying clothes yesterday when the rear of the drier exploded. he was treated for burns to his arms. no word on what causeds blast. utility crews were looking for a gas leak. a suffolk county man accused of drowning his mother in the family swimming pool is in jail on $5 million bond. 23-year-old dennis cullen

mother was found wednesday in the backyard of their lloyd harbor home. police say she had scolded him for not taking his medication. >> she had poked him. then he -- after she poked him, he put her in a head lock, walked from the shallow end of the pool with her in the head lock. >> neighbors say cullen has been battling mental illness since childhood. he is charged with second degree murder. also on long island, an islip man is facing charges this morning after police say he restaurants. police say 25-year-old donald jennareli terrorized clerks by reaching across counters and taking cash from registers. customers say they're relieved there's been an arrest. >> i think it's frightening. i think that people come for their morning coffee, and the employees are just trying to work and that's really scary that someone would come in and make them feel unsafe.

apparently lying about a drunken night in rio. >> cbs2's meg baker joins us with details. >> brazilian officials have finally gotten to the bottom of it. they say ryan lochte made up the story about being robbed and held up at gunpoint in rio and there's video to prove it. >> brazilian officials spent the past few days trying to piece together what really happened sunday morning. this video shows the four u.s. swimmers at a gas st >> we have evidence that demonstrates that it's very, very improbable that the incident is a robbery situation. >> police say the americans including ryan lochte, jack conger, gunnar bentz and jimmy feigen damaged a bathroom door and urinated in an alley, which is why security got involved. this video shows the swimmers at a gas station getting into taxi, but minutes later a security guard with a gun orders the group out of the

that is on its side. we can see at least five people that were being treated for injuries. the exact number of passengers on the buses, a number of injuries, extensive injuries not known at this time. we have seen in this area at least five people being treated for injuries taken off to ambulances. again, the intersection of raymond boulevard and broad street in newark, two buses involved in an accident. one of them on its side. live in chopper >> we are now getting word that other mass transit in the area is affected. make sure you check your schedule before you head out the door. we'll continue to follow this breaking news closely and bring you any developments as soon as they become available. alternate side parking is in effect city wide. be safe, don't text and drive. thank you. a fire in yonkers has led to a series of burglaries. residents say thieves broke into their apartments after they were forced to evacuate the building. cbs2's lou young has the story.

some of the 105 people out of their homes following monday's 4-alarm fire in yonkers have now learned their evacuated apartments were looted. we weren't allowed inside the building but one of the displaced victims complained outside, this man's relative translated over the phone. >> it was about $3000. his tv and his shoes and some clothes. security guards it was easy pickings for the thieves because all the apartment doors had been removed. six apartments were robbed of jewelry, electronics and cash. all the victims had already lost too much. >> this guy, for instance, works at a car wash and carries his passport with him to prove his citizenship. the money he lost was to pay his rent and credit card bills. this woman has been staying with relatives in brooklyn and says the once wide open

>> we had to wait. i don't know how long. >> first it was wide open. now it's locked up. >> mm-hmm, yep, we can't get anything. >> one full line in the building is uninhabitable but the rest could reopen soon. the owner insisted he didn't know anything about a security problem although he did confirm there was only one security guard on duty earlier this week. >> we had one guy there, just to be honest. the guy the there the whole night. >> but the apartments robbed, six of them. >> that i don't know. >> police tell us the thieves may have come in through a rear entrance, an open window or across the attached roof from another building. five new york city parks are getting makeovers at a cost of $150 million. one park in each borough will get $30 million in upgrades including new baseball and soccer fields and hiking trails. mayor de blasio says it's all about fairness.
