around 6 a.m. >> we have evidence that demonstrate that is very, very improbable that the incident is a robbery situation. >> police say the americans including ryan lochte damaged a bathroom door and urinated in an alley, which is why security got involved. this video shows the swimmers at a gas station getting into a taxi, but minutes later a security guard with a gun orders the group out of one swimmer appears to remove his wallet. another briefly raises his hands. from another angle we see what happens next. a third-party steps in to translate as the athletes are told to sit on a curb. police say the swimmers handed over money to repair a bathroom door. they also say a gun was pointed at the swimmers. so part of lochte's story checks out.

injured when the fire tore through two homes and damaged five others in the st. george section. cbs2's ali bauman joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: residents standing here last night said they felt helpless as they watched hundreds of firefighters try to save their homes for more than three hours. >> tearing through wood and clouding the streets of this staten island neighborhood on were covering their nose and mouth as flames ripped through seven buildings destroying two of them. >> i see all the medical care smoke. >> it took them three hours to get under control and left 42 people homeless. >> these houses are so connected together and the landlords are putting so many people in these houses there's no room. >> firefighters were forced to cut power as these engulfed

vacant apartments were robbed. monday's fire forced 100 people out of the homes. during the search for survivors, firefighters removed all the apartment doors. thieves have raided six apartments. a translator described what was stolen from one of the apartments. >> it was about$3000, his living room tv and his shoes and some clothes. >> the building's owner says a security guard was on duty a sliding glass door and two windows blown out of a house in clark, new jersey. the homeowner says he was drying clothes yesterday when the rear of the drier exploded. he was treated for burns to his arms. no word on what causeds blast. utility crews were looking for a gas leak. a suffolk county man accused of drowning his mother in the family swimming pool is in jail on $5 million bond. 23-year-old dennis cullen

mother was found wednesday in the backyard of their lloyd harbor home. police say she had scolded him for not taking his medication. >> she had poked him. then he -- after she poked him, he put her in a head lock, walked from the shallow end of the pool with her in the head lock. >> neighbors say cullen has been battling mental illness since childhood. he is charged with second degree murder. also on long island, an islip man is facing charges this morning after police say he restaurants. police say 25-year-old donald jennareli terrorized clerks by reaching across counters and taking cash from registers. customers say they're relieved there's been an arrest. >> i think it's frightening. i think that people come for their morning coffee, and the employees are just trying to work and that's really scary that someone would come in and make them feel unsafe.

late sunday, this cold front rolls on through. we're talking about the best bet for showers and storms this weekend. sunday into early monday and behind that, this canadian high pressure system will do us a big favor. if you're fed up with the sticky conditions, they're disappearing monday too tuesday. quick check on the tropics, tropical storm fiona, winds are the 45 miles now about 1200 miles west of the cape voir dire islands moving west, northwest at 10 miles per hour. this storm is not at this point in time expected to affect the continental u.s., but certainly we'll see an increased risk of rip currents as the storm gets closer to us next week. for today spotty showers possible, we've got this cold front kind of sliding in the wrong direction bringing a little more instability, but it's still looking like a partly cloudy day for the most part. tomorrow we're still at risk

an overturned tractor-trailer with a debris spill and. in newark it's crash. police are on scene investigating. it has washington street closed in both directions between university and west kin knee street. alternate side parking is in effect city wide today. be safe, don't text and drive. no a move affecting thousands of federal inmates, the government announced it will phase out the use of private prisons. the move comes after a recent justice department audit found private facilities have more safety and se government. human rights advocates who have long complained about conditions at private prisons applaud the move. five new york city parks are getting makeovers at a cost of $150 million. one park in each borough will get 30 million in upgrades including new baseball and soccer fields and hiking trails. mayor de blasio says it's all about fairness. >> we all know for years and years our city government didn't look at all five

a dozen firefighters, nearly two dozen actually. >> new developments in the swimming scandal adds one of ryan lochte's teammates goes before a judge in brazil overnight. i'm chris wragge. >> and i'm andrea grymes in for mary calvi. thanks for waking up with us. the u.s. olympic committee has apologized to brazil following reports that lochte lied about that late night robbery in rio. >> cbs2's meg baker joins us life in the studio with breaking details. >> chris and andrea, as we've bee changing and now brazilian authorities say they know what really happened and video shows it was not a robbery. >> brazilian officials spent the past few days trying to piece together what happened on sunday morning. this video shows the four u.s. swimmers at a gas station around 6 a.m. >> we have evidence that demonstrate that it's very, very improbable that the incident is a robbery situation.

including ryan lochte, jack conger, gunnar bentz and jimmy feigen damaged a bathroom door and urinated in an alley. this video shows them at a gas station getting in a taxi. minutes later a security guard with a gun orders the group out of the car. one swimmer removes his wallet. from another angle we see what happens next. a third-party steps in to translate as the athletes are told to sit on over money to repair a damaged bathroom door. they also say a gun was pointed at the swimmers so part of lochte's story checks out. >> a guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and said go down. >> this is the front page of the new york post. they're making the point that lochte's actions validate the stereotype of ugly americans. now listen to the spokesperson

wife critically injured. a surveillance video captured the van speeding off. family members are raising money to cover medical bills and to pay for tomorrow's funeral. the father of a murdered queens jogger says police are close to making an arrest but the police commissioner says that is not true. earlier this month, 30-year-old karina vetrano was sexually assaulted and strangled as she jogged alone in spring creek park in howard beach. yesterday her father announced there are a few suspects he calls very police. >> there has been progress in the case. we have a number of very, very strong leads. we feel like it's only going to be a matter of days before this could come to an end. >> but police commissioner bill bratton says there are no suspects in the vetrano case and they are not close to finding her killer.

that is on its side. we can see at least five people that were being treated for injuries. the exact number of passengers on the buses, a number of injuries, extensive injuries not known at this time. we have seen in this area at least five people being treated for injuries taken off to ambulances. again, the intersection of raymond boulevard and broad street in newark, two buses involved in an accident. one of them on its side. live in chopper >> we are now getting word that other mass transit in the area is affected. make sure you check your schedule before you head out the door. we'll continue to follow this breaking news closely and bring you any developments as soon as they become available. alternate side parking is in effect city wide. be safe, don't text and drive. thank you. a fire in yonkers has led to a series of burglaries. residents say thieves broke into their apartments after they were forced to evacuate the building. cbs2's lou young has the story.

some of the 105 people out of their homes following monday's 4-alarm fire in yonkers have now learned their evacuated apartments were looted. we weren't allowed inside the building but one of the displaced victims complained outside, this man's relative translated over the phone. >> it was about $3000. his tv and his shoes and some clothes. security guards it was easy pickings for the thieves because all the apartment doors had been removed. six apartments were robbed of jewelry, electronics and cash. all the victims had already lost too much. >> this guy, for instance, works at a car wash and carries his passport with him to prove his citizenship. the money he lost was to pay his rent and credit card bills. this woman has been staying with relatives in brooklyn and says the once wide open

>> we had to wait. i don't know how long. >> first it was wide open. now it's locked up. >> mm-hmm, yep, we can't get anything. >> one full line in the building is uninhabitable but the rest could reopen soon. the owner insisted he didn't know anything about a security problem although he did confirm there was only one security guard on duty earlier this week. >> we had one guy there, just to be honest. the guy the there the whole night. >> but the apartments robbed, six of them. >> that i don't know. >> police tell us the thieves may have come in through a rear entrance, an open window or across the attached roof from another building. five new york city parks are getting makeovers at a cost of $150 million. one park in each borough will get $30 million in upgrades including new baseball and soccer fields and hiking trails. mayor de blasio says it's all about fairness.
