during the morning commute. >> light changed and the other bus t-boned the 13 knocking it into the air. >> reporter: twisted metal inside bus 13. some passengers pinned in their seats trapped. a man injured trying to help others get out. what did you hear? >> i just heard the people ask for h i was scared think the guy gonna die. >> reporter: you can see him on the bus rolling cell phone video seconds after the accident. did you see the bus, was it speeding toward you? >> yes, very fast. everything go very fast. >> reporter: another passenger tells me on the phone he was taking a nap when the driver of nj transit bus 59 careened into them. >> i tried to help a lady. she said she was stuck. >> me and a couple other guys

of the bus break the window and pull pieces of the chairs and stuff out of the bus to get to the people. >> reporter: the driver of bus 59 was pronounced dead at the scene. >> he has been an operator with the company for 27 years and was operating his bus from the ironbound garage. >> reporter: investigators trying to determine the cause of the accident by examining surveillance video. >> there's mantn evidence. so at this moment we will not speculate as to the cause or the, um, manner in which this incident occurred. >> reporter: the driver who died was on an empty bus because he was just starting his shift heading to westfield in union county to pick up passengers. now, the identification. driver who survived, james

christine sloan, cbs2 news. a queens neighborhood is unnerved tonight after a woman is stunned to find a burglar inside her own house! cbs 2's dave carlin reports. >> reporter: this woodhaven, queens, homeowner wiped away tears as she was escorted to an ambulance after coming face to face with a stranger. the suspect is white, skinny, 6'2", may have seen the woman's husband leave for work. place say he used a back -- police say he used a and put a knife to a woman's throat and put her in the closet. she was there as he left the house and he bumped into a neighbor. the neighbor said the man ran through the gate with his head held low. >> i'm trying to see his face. glasses, sunglasses, he had the hoodie on. and then whoo, took off. >> reporter: the family says it appears nothing was taken. the victim did not want to be taken to the hospital. later in the day we talked to her. hello, ma'am. are you okay?

some travelers here at laguardia very worried. ?[ music ]? >> reporter: miami is always a hot spot for new yorkers looking to get away and relax but the $24 billion a year tourism business there could be shaken by this announcement. just one day after state and local officials denied the presence of zika in their area. >> five individuals have already been confirmed as cases of local transmissions of zika are connected to the miami beach area. >> reporter:lo rick scott confirming two residents and three tourists including one from new york are the first locally transmitted cases of the mosquito-borne virus in miami beach. the centers for disease control added a 1.5-square-mile area to its travel advisory in the center of busy south beach from 8th street to 28th street and the atlantic ocean to the intercoastal warning pregnant

stay away. >> i wouldn't go there. very scary. >> reporter: travelers flying out of laguardia airport expressed growing concern and some say the news could make them skip south beach. if a trip came up to miami, would you still go? >> um, probably. mosquitoes leave me alone. so i would -- yeah, i would go. but i definitely would look at other places i would rather go for now to. >> reporter: miami-dade county is already aggressively spraying for mosquitoes in the wynwood arts district previously reported. governor scott defended florida's zika response and questions surrounding when they found out about the south beach cases. >> i want everybody in the state to stay safe. i want our visitors to stay safe. so as we know that there's local transmission, we will make sure that information is put out as promptly as we can. >> reporter: today the new york city health department put out a travel advisory for pregnant

they are advising them to not go. but they are also reminding everybody that zika in healthy people present mild or no symptoms. it's really a problem for pregnant women because of those potentially devastating birth defects. reporting live at laguardia airport, brian conybeare, cbs 2 news. we now know the cause of that huge fire on staten island that left dozens of people homeless yesterday. fd started caused by children playing with matches. this fire burned for more than 3 hours yesterday in st. george destroying or damaging 7 homes. neighbors were worried about it after seeing sparking electrical wires. >> it was jumping over to the other houses and lines were cracking and it was going to come over here. you could feel the heat from

people left homeless by the fire. too little too late. a community is complaining that the long island rail road is dragging its feet replacing overhead bridges some of which date from the 1890s. lou young reports on the bridge battle from mount vernon. >> reporter: there are five rundown traffic bridges over metro-north's new haven line in this part of westchester county. we're in downtown mount vernon, where the mayor half. >> trucks that want to make a simple delivery can't get across town. what's worse about it it's been like this for 10 years or more. >> this will not happen for one iota of a second in bronxville scarsdale larchmont any other community will never have the mta abandon them like this. >> reporter: to call these bridges obsolete is an understatement. the roadbed is made out of wood unstalled when most of the

pulled by horses. >> it's disgusting. who is responsible for that? >> reporter: the mta is. and the city is saying it's taking far too long to address the problem. two bridges are closed to traffic entirely. emergency vehicles have to take longer routes. and businesses have been suffering including this funeral home. >> there's nowhere that you can get over to 3rd street the other side of town. >> reporter: you're cut off? >> we're cut off. >> reporter: after a decade of lobbying and maneuvers, the mta says it will begin to replace be four of the bridges one time starting next year and finishing in 2021. the mayor wants temporary bridges installed in all five locations immediately. >> this bridge that we're sitting on is still not in the plan. they still omitted it. >> reporter: public works commissioner ralph uzi was in the heated meeting. >> this appears to be a lack of -- of -- of concern. if they lifted here they would have a wholly different approach and mentality. >> reporter: for its part, the mta seems to acknowledge the friction saying simply given

this matter further with the city. in mount vernon, lou young, cbs 2 news. >> the mta plans to spend $27 million replacing the bridges over the next five years. mount vernon's mayor suggests temporary bridges could be installed right away for a fraction of that price. next, curtain call for a man claiming to be a broadway producer. the oscar winner's name he dropped to convince investors to pay for a broadway show that >> also they went inside to rob the place but they couldn't get out. how workers at a store trapped two would-be robbers inside. and how the suspects still managed to get away. >> and protecting the k-9s who protect us. the special donations for these police dogs in westchester county. and lonnie, we are ready for the weekend. >> you bet we are. looks like there could be some rain over portions of the weekend.

demolition is under way at laguardia airport. crews starting tearing down. p2 marking lot one of the big steps in the renovation project. laguardia will get a state-of- the-art central terminal. the project is expected though to take some years. it will be finished in the year 2022. store employees react quickly during an alleged robbery in progress by locking the armed suspects in the store. magdalena doris asks, why did police miss the trapped suspects? >> trapped two robbers outsmarted. fighting for their freedom inside of a mobile store on tenth avenue in paterson unsuccessfully climbing through the ceiling dropping stolen

wednesday afternoon by a quick- thinking store clerk. a few minutes earlier the thieves had the upper hand. tommy torres was in a tough spot only thinking -- >> i got to go. i got to live. >> reporter: as the men searched for cash and cell phones, torres went for the back door locking it behind him. then running through the travel agency next door and bringing down the front gate. [ gate down ] >> reporter: the robbers are locked inside and police are called so naturally this story ends with two guys in handcuffs but there's not what happened. now changes to the department. >> we got them but the cops never showed up. >> reporter: with extra time to spare the robbers used tools found inside to get out. 18 minutes after the initial call, cops arrived at an empty disheveled store. the thieves gone with $115. >> it's alarming. >> reporter: the director of the paterson police department said this never should have happened. the emergency call wasn't categorized correctly.

call. >> reporter: during a thorough 911 call -- >> the word gun is used. >> during the third call. >> at that point, within 11 seconds a car is dispatched. >> reporter: the department is retraining the dispatchers. they are still searching for the robbers. magdalena doris hazel sanchez, cbs 2 news. >> the paterson police department says they are actively searching for the robbers and are in the process system. a broadway producer is accused of quite the performance by tricking seven investors into giving him tens of thousands of dollars for a fraudulent play. 41-year-old roland scahill allegedly said he had signed on oscar winner to star as kathleen battle in a new show in one of the theaters. helen hayes theater on

right now, the upcoming weekend, sunday a cold front will come through the area and this is going to change things for next week. nice week next week. tropical storm fiona, really no threat. latest information from the national hurricane center shows it hasn't grown at all 40-mile- per-hour winds. it's in the middle of the ocean halfway between africa and the u.s. the track takes this to the northwest. that's sort of it's moving in our direction. right now, latest indications are it will encounter wind shear downgraded to a low pressure system and a rainmaker by tuesday and wednesday and it will eventually turn northeast, no landfall anywhere. closer to home, here's what it looks like out there a shower popping up for some people. the cbs 2 mobile weather lab is parked on 72nd and central park west. let's check that as of right now. and there's the intersection. let's zoom around to the back
