crime -- robert chambers. who would become known as the preppy killer. tomorrow night cbs's "48 hours" will reexamine the crime that captivated the nation. >> nothing i can say will ever bring her back. but i am sorry. >> this case captivated the world because it had two essential ingredients for every headline writer. it had money and murder. >> the b 1 school student jennifer levin was found half-naked in central park. police said she had been raped and strangled. >> i was responsible for her death. there's no question about that. robert chambers was a handsome 19-year-old part-time college student who struggled with drugs. he met lech in a local bar and they left together. chambers claimed it was a case of rough sex gone too far and he was fight her off.

interview with chambers in 2003. >> i swung my arm, struck her neck and pulled her off of me and to the side. >> did she speak again after she fell to the ground? >> no, i had never seen a dead person before. >> this is the left side of his face, a deep severe scratch mark and there's another long mark here. that tells us she was frantically fighting for her life. >> we revisited the case because it's still as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. it raises the question -- how >> chambers was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. the press labeled him the preppy killer. >> this was a guy who could have been a male model. but what you didn't see was the dark side. he was a thief, a druggie and eventually was a killer. >> actress alex kapp horner who starred in "the new adventures of old christine" was datinging chambers at the time she broke up with him on the night of the murder. "e.t." interviewed her in 1998.
