it's 4:30. 71 degrees on this monday, august 22nd. a refreshing start to the workweek. low humidity, lots of sunshine with temperatures in the low 80s. sounds perfect! good morning to everyone. i'm chris wragge. >> i'm mary calvi. we begin with a horrific sunday expressway. it's left several families grieving this morning. >> four people were killed, including a former aide to governor cuomo, a father and his young son and the boy's aunt. a fifth victim died late last night. magdalena doris has the report. . >> people responded to the scene. many described it as the worst they've ever seen. >> reporter: a person was

in shirley sunday morning and lost control of his car, crossed the median and went airborne. the impact killed the driver, his 27-year-old sister and his 10-year-old son, christopher. patricia's 3-year-old daughter was injured but survived. their car landed on top of 29- year-old scott martella and his fiancie. the crash killing martella. according to their wedding web site, they were set to be suffolk county executive released a statement honoring martella, his communications director. the hundreds of people scott has worked with over the years... governor cuomo said he was up for any challenge, deeply respected for a strong work eitheric, candor and fighting spirit. long island is a better place

janelle burrell is live with more on the city's efforts. janelle? >> reporter: mary, there are 480 travel-related zika cases here in new york city. 49 of them are pregnant women. the health commissioner doesn't expect to find mosquitos here in the city, but they're not taking any chances. this week, residents in two dozen brooklyn and queens neighborhoods can expect to see health departments spraying for the mosquitos that are known to carry zika. part of plan to protect new yorkers from the virus. . >> going to keep doing what we need to do and spending the money we need to spend, but we expect the federal government to be a partner. >> reporter: the mayor urged congress to return from recess to offer $1.9 billion in funding to fight the virus on a national level. >> this is an international crisis, ergo the help of the federal government.

of two designated zika zones. today is the first day for nearly 8,000 students in miami dade county. the health department there handing out free bug spray and in some school districts, offering long, protective clothing for students, as well. at airports in our region, signs like these, warning travelers. >> scary. very scary. >> reporter: some say it's enough to keep them from going to miami altogether. >> i wouldn't want to be down there, you know, a native down there and i wouldn't want to be visiting as >> reporter: spraying begins at 10:00 tomorrow night and lasts through 6:00 wednesday morning. the health department started a web site, which you can see at the bottom of your screen. it has information for you track the spraying and get other zika information, as well. chris? a harlem woman killed by a spray bullet and the neighborhood wants to know where the guns are coming from. >> let's stop this violence.

was watching a card game late saturday night when a bullet hit her neck. police say he was not the intended target. her husband is devastated. >> of all the people in the world, she had something. >> the search for the gunman continues. a few hours after she was hit, there was more gunfire about six blocks away. two men were wounded there. and hillary clinton california. donald trump holds a rally in akron, ohio. the tracker poll of ohio voters shows clinton extending her lead with 46 percent, versus 40 percent for trump. a two-point gain for clinton since the last poll in july. and in iowa, they're in a dead heat with 40 percent a piece. a security scare at jfk airport. last week, the terminal was

east. but for the most part, that northwest wind lowers. the moisture right at the surface so you don't see as much in the way of clouds. the air quality will be great. there will is nice, bright, brilliant skies with a few clouds to punctuate it. you get a sense of it here in the futurecast. it's quiet today. quiet into tuesday. look at this, even into wednesday. wonderful on wednesday. possibly later in the week, that's when we could see a shower. by friday into saturday, humidity levels will be up. lots of sun, less humidity, breezy. it will be breezy. 81 for your afternoon high. overnight tonight, 64. very comfortable. that's in the city. there will be more variety as far as temperatures around the area. more than the 10-degree spread. tuesday, terrific. less wind. pleasant again and 80. so that -- that could be the pick of the week tuesday. it's going to be close with wednesday, but there's the warm- up. more humidity, could see a shower or thunderstorm later friday.

cuomo. and first-degree murder of a mom and assistant 10 days ago. the motive is unclear. the new york city health department launched a mosquito hotline. you can also see the spraying schedule. that's www.gov/health/mosquito. . remembering the riots 25 years later, on sunday, people to mark the dark chapter in the city's history. dave carlin reports the service was about unity, despite one family member who boycotted the event. >> reporter: observing the presence of crown heights, brooklyn, but also looking back at racially-fueled violation and lawlessness that this neighborhood endured 25 years ago. >> today is a day of reflection.

>> reporter: some people share rosenbaum's reservations about the tone of the anniversary events. others say they don't after witnessing the children here. >> love, peace. >> reporter: the goals she stated are being stamped onto a quilt. organizers say kids who don't necessarily know crown heights painful past march us into a united future. dave carlin, cbs 2 news. along with the death there, nearly 200 pee heights riots. police cars are set on fire and the area suffered $1 million in property damage. southern california residents affected by a massive wildfire are returning home this morning, but some have nothing left. about 82,000 people were ordered to leave their properties last tuesday when the fire broke out in san bernardino, east of l.a. at least 100 homes have been destroyed. the fire charred more than 37 37,000 acres and is now about

louisiana and arkansas has another effect. there is a major damper on the nation's rice harvest. farmers just started harvesting last weekend. louisiana makes up 15 percent of the rice in the nation. and stocks are down after small losses on wall street on friday. energy companies lost ground as a rally in oil prices faded. the dow jones fell by 45 points. the s&p lost 3. dropped just over 1. and united air lines is adding new routes to florida. starting on december 16th, the carrier will offer direct service to and from newark to key west, making it the only direct flight there. then starting in january, united will also expand that key west service to chicago. >> they're always looking at key west in the winter time. 4:49. a warning to come for parents and students going back to school. and predators lurking in

august 22nd. feels like spring. no humidity, plenty of sunshine is on the way. we'll have traffic and weather on the 2s in a moment. first, new warnings about the zika virus. the areas most vulnerable and what the city is doing to keep you safe. and speed may be the cause of that tragic crash on the long island expressway. five people are killed, including a former aide to governorualo in what some call the worst accidents they've wragge. >> i'm mary calvi. the horrific accident happened sunday morning in shirley. >> the most seriously injured survivors were taken to stony brook university hospital. magdalena doris joins us live there this morning with an update. magdalena? >> reporter: chris and mary, five people killed in the crash, six others now being treated for injuries and the crash victims range in age from 10 years old to 81. >> responders came, many

accident they've ever seen. >> reporter: police believe 26- year-old carmella pinelas of hicksville was speeding eastbound near exit 68 in shirley sunday morning when he lost control of his subaru, crossed the median and went airborne, crashing into two other vehicles. the impact killed the driver, carmelo pinelas, his 27-year- old sister, patricia, and his 10-year-old son christopher. her 3-year-old daughter was injured, but survived. their car landed on top of fiancie. the crash killing martella. the fiancie survived. according to the wedding web site, they were set to be married in april. suffolk county executive steven villone released a statement honoring martella, his communications director. >> reporter: governor cuomo described his former aide as

that's part of the equation. and we're tapping into it because we have a northwest wind. it will be gusty at times, maybe 20, 25 miles per hour, but that's the source of this big infusion of natural air conditioning that we're going to enjoy today. 77 lunchtime, it will feel like it. 81 for a high this afternoon. that's a degree below normal. 82 is the normal. we will hover below normal a degree or two for the first week's end. the sun coming up should be pretty. and at 7:43, the sunset. there was a soaker for some yesterday. we're drier now and feeling relief as far as using the umbrella. tomorrow, another wine. tomorrow, with the proximity of the high, there's less wind. it's nice. the numbers are at or below normal with nice conditions.

residents informed about the virus. and a crash killed five people over the weekends. good morning, i'm chris wragge. >> i'm mary calvi. thanks for joining us. and that horrific crash on the l.i.e. left several families grieving this morning. >> the most seriously injured survivors are at stony brook university hospital. magdalena doris is live with more. magdalena? >> reporter: chris and mary, five people were killed, six others now recovering from their injuries. and of the crash vic, to 81. >> many described it as the worst accident they ever saw. >> reporter: police believe 26- year-old carmella pinnal of hicksville was speeding eastbound near exit 68 in shirley sunday morning when he lost control of his subaru, crossed the median and went airborne, crashing into two other vehicles. the impact killed the driver,

and 10-year-old son christopher. patricia's 3-year-old daughter was injured, but survived. their car landed on top of 29- year-old scott martella and his fiancie, the crash killing him, she survived. according to their wedding web site, the northport high school sweethearts were set to be married in april. suffolk county executive steven villone released a statement honoring martella, his communications dto >> reporter: governor cuomo described his former aide as being up for any challenge... >> reporter: overnight, 81- year-old isidore aidleson died of his injuries. he was one of four people inside of this blue car crushed during the crash.

virus from spreading across the city will cost millions of dollars over several years. >> with hundreds of new yorkers already infact infected, reducing the mosquito population is a top priority. janelle burrell is live with more on the city's efforts. janelle? >> reporter: chris and mary, officials don't expect to find zika in mosquitos here, but they're taking every precaution, ramping up the efforts to keep the insects away. so far there have been more than 480 cases of zika in 49 of them are pregnant women, all of the people believed to have contracted the virus while traveling. this week, residents in two neighborhoods can expect to see health department trucks spraying for the mosquitos known to carry zika. part of the three-year, $21 million plan to protect new yorkers from the virus. >> we will keep doing what we need to do and spending the money we need to spend, but we expect the federal government to be a partner. >> reporter: last week, the

billion in funding to fight the virus on a national level. >> this is an international health crisis, ergo the responsibility of the federal government, just like an international security threat would be the responsibility of the federal government. >> reporter: in miami, the site of two designated zika zones. today is the first day of school for nearly 8,000 students in miami dade county. the health department there handing out free bug spray and in some school districts, at airports in our region, signs like these at laguardia warning travelers. >> very, very scary. >> reporter: some admitting the virus is enough to keep them from going to miami altogether. >> i wouldn't want to be down there, you know, a native down there and i wouldn't want to be visiting down there as a tourist, either. >> reporter: spraying in brooklyn and queens starts tomorrow night and lasts until wednesday morning. the city health department started a web site which you can see at the bottom of your screen.

grabbed a police officer's gun. it happened two weeks ago in bedford park. guzman disarmed an officer who was escorting him out of a deli. a 49-year-old man was killed. guzman faces charges including murder and attempted murder of a police officer. 20-year-old brian amarr will face a judge today after being charged with assaulting another man in hicksville yesterday morning. nassau county ic driving his car and got into an argument with his passenger. that man got out and they say amarr reached into his window and stabbed him in the chest. the injuries are said to be non- life-threatening. a shooting at a house party in bridgeport, connecticut leaves 13 people wounded. shots were fired into a crowded backyard party yesterday morning. police believe at least two shooters fired through the hedges of a neighbor's yard. most of the victims' injuries
