last year-- 47-thousand people died from overdoses-- which is a record. if allocated, most of the money would go to states to get more treatment centers open.. and hire experts to treat addiction. in response, republican senator rob portman of ohio issued a statement saying he hopes the president will support the bipartisan 'comprehensive addiction and recovery act.' portman says in addition to funding new initiatives, we must also make sure existing programs have ample support. a sad update now -- a woman badly injured during a fire last may, has died.the now's briana harper takes a look at what happened.briana? briana? the hamilton county coroner confirmed this morning that more than six months after she was seriously injured in a fire, josephine payne, has died. "i couldn't get upstairs because the flames engulfed me."that was raymond payne last may -- just moments after the fire in corryville.his mother, 81 year old josephine payne and his sister were trapped upstairs in their louis avenue home when it

overnight hours.firefighters had to rescue them.and now we've learned josephine never recovered.both payne women inhaled a lot of smoke. smoke.just a few of the long term health problems caused by smoke inhalation include airway obstruction, hoarseness, and continuous cough -- that's all according to the national library of medicine. medicine.because of the amount of smoke they inhaled... both had to be sent to columbus for treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.at the time -- we asked why they had to go so far for care even though we used to have hyberbaric chambers here in the tri-state. a few of them actually.turns out -- the hospitals no longer have the staff, training or certifications to help in an emergency any more. more. i stopped by the corryville neighborhood where josephine lived today.that home remains boarded up.i also called investigators and i'm still waiting to hear back to learn the exact cause of the fire. for the now i'm briana harper. a high speed chase spans three states -- and ends in a

started just before noon in lincoln heights. police say the driver reached speed of 90 miles per hour and led them into kentucky and indiana before driving back into ohio. three suspects were taken into custody in the parking lot of the harrison skyline chili. according to police, the narcotics unit was monitoring the car in lincoln heights before it sped off. today -- more arrests are made in clermont county in connection with a six month burglary spree. spree.sherry carlier and charles glover are in the brown county jail. investigators say they stole 50-thousand dollars worth of jewelry, electronics, and firearms.jeff carlier and brian crank were indicted in the case in october.police say the men admitted selling the stolen items to buy heroin. the woman accused of standing by while her boyfriend allegedly beat her two year old to death has given birth while in custody. rebecca kinner was pregnant when she was arrested in december-- and yesterday gave birth to a baby boy. boy. kinner has pleaded not guilty to all charges including involuntary

two-year old kinsley kinner and her attorney says is back at the butler county jail. kinsley's father believes he is the father of this newborn baby boy. he plans to petition for custody.. and says he wants to name the child kingsley in honor of his late daughter. but rebecca's attorney told us today a dna test will establish paternity. *this is what interstate 75 looks like right now just north of the lateral.traffic is moving fine this afternoon-- in fact it's much better than this morning when *two multi-vehicle crashes slowed traffic. check out this first pile up involving six cars -- you can see one car caught fire in the northbound lanes near towne street. firefighters worked quickly to get that under control and clean up the debris. police say it was a chain reaction crash. officers cited one driver for rear-ending the car in front. traffic was backed up for about 2 miles all the way to

and about 20 minutes after that was cleaned up in the northbound lanes.. we spotted another pile up in the southbound lanes. this one involved four-cars. it also brought traffic to a near standstill near towne street.. southbound traffic was backed up past galbraith road until crews could get all four vehicles to the right shoudler. police are still investigating what caused the accident. developing today..hillary clinton is declared the democratic winner of the iowa caucus... in what the party calls the closest contest in history.but there's no time to rest...she and republican winner ted cruz... along with most of the remaining presidential candidates are already back on the campaign trail today.the now's todd walker is tracking what's next: :36-:42:54-1:011:05-1:10 tuesday morning.. and iowa is already in the rear-view mirror for many of the campaigns.marco rubio was on the ground today campaigning in new hampshire.. energized from his surprise showing in the iowa caucuses.. where he finished third place.. but right on the heals of donald trump... who finished second behind ted cruz.ted cruz: :00

breaking now ... the c-d-c is confirming what could be the first case in the u-s of someone getting zika virus through sexual transmission. transmission.we've shown you the states where the virus has been reported... after people have brought it back from other countries.but this is the first time we know of this year that someone has given it to someone else in the u-s through sexual activity. typically zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes. there haven't been any cases of that happening in the u-s. so far. there are new efforts right now... to come up with a vaccine to fight the zika virus.a major drug maker announced today it's working on one. one.they say they will use what they learned creating vaccines for yellow fever and japanese encephalitisis -- which is similar in some ways

welcome back to the now cincinnati... when it comes to icy rescues, first responders say this is the worst kind of winter. winter.jordan burgess takes us inside their training-- and shows us what you should not do if this happens to you this is the danger we're talking about. even as the temperatures got above freezing today you could find ice at ponds like this one at miami meadows park in clermont county it's just going to bounce over there because of that ice there. they say often times this is the ice that can get people in trouble. trouble. grab ahold. all right. you ready?they can be some of the most dramatic rescues.but this one wasn't real. it's part of a training video put together

it really is a great opportunity to save a life.and this is the master's class on it.the people in here being taught by dive training international are from fire departments across the tri- state.they'll go back and train their firefighters on ice rescue techniques. techniques. we bring this information out to be used but we hope it doesn't have to be used.you would think a winter like this would reduce ice rescues... but trainers say many times it's the up and down temperatures that can lead to ice that's thick.. but not thick enough. enough. all it can take is a couple of days for some ice to set up that might hold some weight weighttwo kids fell through the ice in brown county in january.they were rescued by neighbors before crews got there.but even adults can find themselves on thin ice. ice. what seems to be the biggest trend is people going out on the ice for their animals. maybe their pets or even wildlife that they feel for. for. and the ice rescue training will continue tomorrow and thursday even though the lack of ice at ponds like this one will make it more challenging. jordan burgess. the now cincinnati.

an extraordinary reunion between a mother and daughter took place in upstate new york ... it dates back to 1933 ... when a 14 year old gave birth to a baby girl.six months later, the state took the baby away. she was eventually adopted and raised by a couple on long island.82 years later ... the daughter, desperate to learn about her mother, pieced together clues from her birth certificate and the internet. sure enough, she found her mom.. now 96 years old and the pair reunited.
