may have left messages behind. the shooter's father speaking briefly last night. >> obviously, it's been a devastating day, devastating for me and my family. all i ask is i know you guys are here to do your job. all i ask is for you to just respect our privacy, and so far you've done that. antoinette: seven others were wounded, three are in critical condition at this hour. the gunman was killed during a shootout with police. the college campus will remain closed until at least monday. president obama: somehow this has become routine. we've become numb to this. erika: an emotional press conference, president obama lashing out after the shooting. this morning he is again calling for action. president obama: this is a political choice that we make. to allow this to happen every

5:06 am
here at umass boston, the campus police say they work with staff and city police to make sure they have a security plan to keep everyone safe if the unthinkable should happen. >> the way we train, it's not if happens. that's the way we have to think now as police officers, and it's scary to think that way. plans to make sure we're doing the right thing. frank: the chief here at umass boston has some experience with campus shootings. he was at delaware state university in 2007 when one student killed another on campus. one tactic we're seeing here is tracking social media. as we've seen, it's not unusual for a would be shooter to telegraph his motive and his plans online. here at umass boston, frank holland, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: breaking overnight, the taliban is claiming responsibility for shooting down a u.s. military plane in afghanistan, but the pentagon isn't buying that. 14 people were killed, including 6 american service members killed when the transport plane crashed approaching the airport

new sea wall, which eclipses its battered predecessor. >> 2 1/2 feet, that's a big difference. now let's hope they just get a little spray over rather than the full force. >> i feel much safer that the water will stay on that side of the sea wall, not come over. cindy: let's hope so. more good news, the astronomical high tides we've been monitoring since the weekend are actually decreasing, and our next high tide in marshfield is at 2:00 this afternoon. even though the wind is staying strong, the tides are lowering astronomically, but certainly something to watch the next several amps. erika: tentatively good news. randy, back to you. randy: thank you both. we've learned a second person has died after contracting west nile virus. the victim, a woman in her 90's. she was from suffolk county. it's believed she contracted the virus there. the other victim, whose death we learned about earlier this week, was also from suffolk county. the mosquito threat there has

been raised to high. erika: boston's mayor is bringing in some big legal guns amid questions about the city's role in a teamster extortion investigation. brian kelly will lead the probe at city hall to, as mayor walsh puts it, make sure everything was done properly. kelly, who's now in private practice, helped convict james "whitey" bulger. five members of local 25 were accused of yelling racial and homophobic tires, and slashing tires of production members for the show "top chef." an unnamed city worker called two locations to warn that teamsters were angry that union workers weren't hired. randy: disturbing details and harsh words from governor charlie baker. the subject, the death of a 2-year-old girl in an auburn foster home. the governor speaking of an unacceptable series of d.c.f. failures after reading a state report on the avalena conway-coxon case. medical findings in the report indicate the child died of heat stroke, but the governor also
5:10 am
blamed a breakdown in the department of children and families procedures. governor baker: at different times, too many children were assigned to live in this foster home despite the glaring fact that there was not enough space. the failures outlined in this must and will be promptly corrected to ensure the safety of other children in the care of the apartment. randy: two d.c.f. employees have been reassigned and could face further disciplinary action. erika: newscenter 5 sitting down with hillary clinton. randy: her plan to take on the n.r.a. and the question she would not answer. millions of t-mobile customers exposed now. how the company's making amends could be called ironic. erika: losing weight while you sleep. three foods that might help it happen. antoinette: right now the father of the campus shooter in oregon says he is shocked. hundreds gathered last night to

5:14 am
look at these winds, they're gusting 20, 30 miles per hour, perhaps even higher. that's a big concern for the high tide coming up this afternoon. between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m., minor coastal flooding and splashover a concern here. during the afternoon hours, we may get a little minor coastal flooding and splashover on saturday and sunday afternoon as well. the frontal boundary that brought us the heavy rain a couple days ago sitting to our south. high pressure nosing in. in between, we're getting those winds. some rain allowed to make it to the south shore and the cape. you can see right here, there are areas of rain generally on the lighter side. i notice, as you get into boston and points northward, not raining just yet. it is cool and raw. 47 worcester. 52 in boston right now. high temperatures today stuck between about 50 and 55 for most of us. so it is going to stay on the cool side today. those winds picking up could see some gusts of 45 with the wind advisory through tomorrow morning on cape cod. let me walk you there the timeline here.

with this as a back drop, only the most optimistic might have predicted pope francis could have made a positive dent in our national conversation. after all, the 78-year-old pontiff had his own problems -- dealing with a church beset by clergy sex scandals, declining attendance, and increasing irrelevance in a secular society. the five days of the pope's itinerary encompassed memorable stops, a call on the white house, and speeches to congress and the u.n. most importantly, his trip included a focus on the marginalized in our society -- lunches with the homeless, visits with prisoners, and so many personal moments with the sick, the lost, and the heart broken. pope francis also met with a small group of the victims of the church sex abuse scandal. while infuriating many others for initially praising american crisis. he eventually surprised critics acknowledging that some bishops were involved in a cover-up and pledging to hold all accountable, including bishops and other church leaders who hid
5:24 am
he will ultimately be judged by his actions among those who hope his pledge is fulfilled. conservatives and progressives all found things to like and dislike about the pope's message, and while pope francis' trip was aimed at encouraging american catholics, his visit ultimately helped elevate our national conversation. be care takers of creation, rise above differences, uplift the poor, be humble, work for justice and peace. pope francis left us with contrasting choices. our country can work together to build bridges, or we can focus,
