the hobby making them internet sensations ahead this friday morning. good morning to you. i'm randy price. erika: multitalented there. i'm erika tarantal. emily is off. cindy is here. hurricane joaquin on a new track. cindy: what a switch from 24 and 48 hours ago. this thing is trending eastward in the projections, but right now still stuck over the bahamas. this is a category 4 hurricane. winds 130 miles per hour, just sitting and battering the central bahamas. by later this evening, it will start to shift north away from the bahamas, and look at this new forecast track from the hurricane center. all the models started shifting eastward yesterday. now the hurricane center is thinking this is going to stay offshore and u.s. landfall not expected with hurricane joaquin. we'll keep you posted on that. in the meantime, you need an umbrella out the door here on the south shore and the cape. lighter rain right now. that rain is going to slowly pivot northward with highs today. we also have that northeasterly

wind, and it is quite gusty along the coastline. gusting over 30 miles per hour. throughout the day on the cape and the islands, the winds could hour. wind advisories staying up this morning. we are once again concerned with the high tide this afternoon. could be minor coastal flooding during the afternoon hours. look at the temperatures. lower 50's this morning. low to mid-50's this afternoon. it is a cool, raw day. that rain does shift into boston by lunchtime. by this evening's commute, looks like there will be raindrops all the way up to new hampshire's border. getting wetter as it wears on. right now we'll get you out to the roads and see how we're doing out there. olessa: a live look at route 1 in saugus. southbound moving to the top of the screen. so far it doesn't look too bad. let's get to the maps. we're watching an accident 290 westbound by route 12. also a disabled car eastbound on the pike by route 16. as we travel south of town, an accident on the expressway by the braintree split. making your way north another

wood coming out of andover. you've got the delays there by spot pond. so far trains and buses are doing okay. erika: new information about an oregon school massacre as hundreds gather to mourn the lives lost. at least nine people were killed. this morning we're hearing from the gunman's father for the first time. randy: "the eye's" antoinette antonio following the overnight developments. antoinette: the gunman's father says his family is in absolute shock after his 26-year-old son went on a shooting rampage, killing at least nine people and wounding several others. this tightknit community of roseburg, oregon, is reeling with grief this morning. students ran for cover yesterday as the gunman, now identified as chris harper mercer, opened fire at umpqua community college. law enforcement sources tell abc news four firearms were recovered at the scene. three pistols and an assault type rifle. they've also hinted the gunman

may have left messages behind. the shooter's father speaking briefly last night. >> obviously, it's been a devastating day, devastating for me and my family. all i ask is i know you guys are here to do your job. all i ask is for you just to respect our privacy. so far, you've done that. antoinette: seven others were wounded in the shooting. three are in critical condition at this hour. the gunman was killed during a shootout with police. the college campus will remain closed until at least monday. erika: president obama lashing out after the shooting. he is again calling for action. president obama: this is a political choice we make to allow this to happen every few months in america. we collectively are answerable to those families who lose their

inaction. erika: the president is calling for tighter gun control laws. this is at least the eighth time in his presidency he's addressed the nation after a mass shooting. the heartbreak of sandy hook elementary school in connecticut will never be forgotten. 20 children and 6 adults were killed there. that was december 14th of 2012. since then, records show there have been 142 school shootings in the united states. that's nearly one every week. randy: right now college campuses across the commonwealth security. "the eye's" frank holland is at the university of massachusetts boston with how they're frank: good morning. with 50 colleges and universities here in the boston area and 250,000 students, the rampage in oregon has campus police here reviewing every facet of their security plans. right now we're here at umass boston. the campus police here say they work with students, staff, and the city police to make sure they have a security plan in place that will keep everyone

happen. >> the way we train, it's not if this happens, it's when this happens. that's the way we have to think as police officers. it's scary to think that way. >> it makes us look over our own plans to make sure we're doing the right thing. frank: the chief here has experience. he was at delaware state in 2007 when one student shot another student on campus. another tactic is monitoring social media online. shooters often telegraph their motives and plans online. frank holland, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: breaking right now. the vatican has released a new statement on the pope's controversial meeting with the kentucky county clerk kim davis. a spokesman says that meeting last week in washington should not be considered a form of support for her position. davis was jailed after refusing to sign marriage licenses for gay couples. the vatican says pope francis

met with many people during his u.s. stay due to, quote, kindness and availability. also breaking overnight, the taliban claiming responsibility for the shooting down of a u.s. military plane in afghanistan, but the pentagon is not buying that. 14 people were killed, including 6 american service members killed when the transport plane crashed approaching an airport. also among the dead, several civilian contractors, three people on the ground as well. erika: right now hurricane joaquin just battering the bahamas, a powerful and dangerous category 4 storm just creeping along. no immediate reports of casualties there. the storm may only get stronger. cindy: still just sitting. miles per hour. tremendous storm in the bahamas. by this evening, looks like it may start to pull away. look at the forecast track for the hurricane center. keeping it offshore of the u.s. main land.

we are encouraged by that. for people on our coastline right now, hurricane joaquin really isn't the first concern. you can hear that right there. the wind howling in marshfield. whipping up the surf on the south shore. the good news is this neighborhood is protected by a sea wall, which eclipses its battered predecessor. >> 2 1/2 feet, a big difference. now we hope they get a little spray over rather than the full force. >> i feel much safer the water will stay on that side of the sea wall, not come over. cindy: the astronomical high tides are slowly decreasing. the winds, though, not letting up quite yet. we're going to keep a close eye on the coastline. the next high tide in marshfield just after 2:00 this afternoon. we'll be watching the tides through the weekend. randy: we've learned a second person has died after contracting west nile virus. the victim, a woman in her 90's. she was from suffolk county and

believed she contracted the virus there. the other victim we learned about earlier this week was also from suffolk county. the mosquito threat there has been raised to high. a disgraced tennis player ordered to pay $1.2 million to a massachusetts woman he coached in high school. a judge imposed that punishment over sexual abuse. bob hewitt is accused of committing in the 1970's. hewitt currently appealing a prison sentence on similar charges in south africa. he is there. a ruling in boston is the first since the state changed the law extending the statute of limitations on child rape suits. erika: boston's mayor bringing in big legal guns amid questions about the city's role in a teamsters extortion investigation. brian kelly will lead the probe at city hall to, as mayor walsh puts it, make sure everything was done properly. kelly, who's now in private practice, helped convict james "whitey" bulger. five members of local 25 are

homophobic slurs, threatening violence, and slashing tires of production crew members for the show "top chef." according to the indictment, an unnamed city worker called two locations to warn the teamsters were angry that union workers were not hired. 6:09, disturbing details and harsh words from governor charlie baker, the subject, the death of a 2-year-old girl in an auburn foster home. they speak of a series of d.c.f. failures after reading a report on the avalena conway-coxon case. medical findings indicate the child died of heat stroke in that foster home, but the governor also blamed a breakdown in the department of children and families procedures. governor baker: at different times, too many children were assigned to live in this foster home despite the glaring fact there was not enough space. the failures outlined in this must and will be promptly corrected to ensure the safety of other children in the care of the department.

and the official track now from the hurricane center really a big shift eastward. sitting over the bahamas through this evening with winds currently 130 miles per hour. may maintain that strength by tomorrow afternoon. it is still a category 3 hurricane. it's beginning to lift northward, and you can see that track a good distance here from the eastern seaboard. we will watch it for you. right now it doesn't look like it's going to have a big impact. cool temperatures out the door. 51 in boston. that wind is strong out of the north. sustained at 12. gusting over 30 on parts of the cape. with that persistent wind throughout the afternoon, once again, we're going to be watching the high tide. coastal flood advisory for that splashover. minor coastal flooding a possibility as we get into the afternoon. the same setup since yesterday. parts of the south creeping a little closer north, bringing back the rain. at the same time, high pressure nosing down from the north. we're getting that squeeze play with the wind. we're also now seeing some showers here on the south shore, the south coast, and the cape. temperatures in the lower 50's.

just 46 in worcester. 49 out the door right now in lawrence. it's going to be a chilly day. we're only going to see temperatures nudge into the low to mid-50's today. all the while, that northeasterly wind keeping that raw feel in the air. 54 boston. maybe mid-50's on the cape. on the cape, the south coast, and the island, we could see hour. we've got a wind advisory up through 11:00 this morning. notice by lunchtime, the rain starts to lift closer to boston and the pike. as we get deeper into this afternoon and evening, it continues to pivot on toward the north. overnight, showers around. during the day tomorrow, showers taper off just a little bit. when all is said and done in terms of rain. heaviest on the south coast and the cape where we could see an inch or two. the amounts really drop off farther north and west that you get. wet weather at times tomorrow morning. sunday looking like the drier weekend day. if you have outdoor plans, the wettest part of the day will be afternoon with showers. some drizzle toward the

clinton goes one-on-one with newscenter 5. speaking with janet wu, clinton reacted to strongly to shootings in washington. she spoke of universal background checks for gun buyers and waiting periods. clinton also said she is not afraid to take on the n.r.a. hillary: i'm going to try to do everything i can as president to raise up an equally large and vocal group that is going to prove to be a counterbalance, and we're going to tell legislators do not be afraid. randy: clinton sidestepped questions about vice president joe biden possibly getting into the presidential race. erika: economic headlines, all eyes on the september jobs report due out this morning. ation stocks were muted as numbers. stock futures slightly higher after very little change in trading thursday. hackers hit the t-mobile wireless network, 50 million customers compromised. stolen data includes social

security numbers, home addresses, birth dates. the hackers got the information from the credit reporting agency experian, which t-mobile uses to check the credit status of its customers. now t-mobile is offering its customers two years of free credit monitoring from experian. more changes at bank of america. the company dropping another smaller cities and towns, even school districts in massachusetts. fitchburg's treasurer has been told they have 90 days to move out as the banking giant focuses on larger customers. a bank of america spokesperson wouldn't comment on the decision. randy: sounds like a dream, losing weight while you sleep. erika: researchers say it is possible with maybe a few little tweaks to your routine. first, flip the sleep switch. getting more of these is a quick way to shed pounds. so if your last meal has sleep inducing qualities, turkey, maybe chicken, you might have better luck doing that. second, pack in the protein. recent study found men who had

cindy: big shift east for joaquin overnight. looks like it's not going to impact the united states, but a huge improvement. along our coast and truly independent of joaquin, we're still tracking the northeasterly winds. we've had them for several days. with the astronomically high tide, still concerned with beach erosion. the afternoon high tide up and down the coast from the north shore all the way down to cape cod. look at the winds right now. we're out of the north/northeast gusting up to 30 miles per hour. throughout the day, the winds ramp up. the winds may gust to 45, even close to 50 miles per hour. wind advisory in effect here. this goes through saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. the winds not going away any time soon. also right now, you can see around the plymouth area down towards buzzard's bay over the cape and the island, it is raining. it's a light to moderate rain at the moment. not in the boston area just yet. look what happens as we get into the afternoon. the rain is going to lift northward. northeasterly winds all day long. temperatures stuck in the mid-50's. it's going to be a cool, raw, damp day. here comes that rain by lunchtime.

it is lifting all the way toward the new hampshire border as we get by this evening. so the rain is going to be filling in with time today. good idea to have the kids have the rain gear at the bus stop getting off the bus this afternoon. kind of rainy and raw, only in the lower 50's. let's get you out to the roads. olessa: we're in pretty decent shape. a couple of things to start off. the pike by allston-brighton, you can see the brake lights starting to build the volume. west of town, watching a crash on 290 westbound. this is by route 12. as we get past the accident, eastbound pike picking up delays by route 9 toward newton corner. a disabled car. an accident on the eastbound side, there's a disabled car by route 16. as you travel north, there is an accident 93 southbound out of andover by river road. after that accident, more volume from concord street down to spot pond. so far, we're okay for trains and buses. i'm olessa stepanova. there's a look at traffic.

shocked is all i can say. randy: new overnight, the father of the man accused in the oregon campus massacre says that he is devastated. this morning we're learning new details about the final moment of the nine people who were killed there. antoinette: the shooter has been identified by police, and right now investigators are still trying to figure out why he opened fire, killing at least nine students and wounding several others. police say 26-year-old chris harper mercer was armed with four guns, three pistols and a rifle, when he fired the shots at umpqua community college in the small town of roseburg, oregon. while police have not released a motive, the father of one of the shooting victims says that his daughter told him the shooter was targeting christians. ask them. if you're a christian, stand up, and they would stand up. he said, good, because you're a christian, you're going to see

them. antoinette: stacy's 18-year-old daughter was hit in the back by a bullet. she's among the seven wounded. three are in critical condition. the gunman was killed in a shootout with police. the college campus will remain closed until at least monday. erika: breaking overnight, the taliban claiming they shot down a u.s. military transport plane in afghanistan, but the pentagon not convinced. 14 people were killed, including 6 american service members. randy: also breaking overnight, the vatican is releasing a new statement saying that kim davis' meeting with pope francis should not be seen as a show of support for the kentucky county clerk. davis was jailed after refusing to sign marriage licenses for gay couples. she had a private meeting with the pope last week in washington. erika: right now a new mosquito alert after a second person died after contracting west nile virus.

90's from suffolk county. right now the u.s. attorney general is headed to massachusetts. her mission, tackling the growing opioid crisis here and around the country. randy: "the eye's" todd kazakiewich is in waltham where a summit gets under way. todd: this morning attorney general loretta lynch will be here in waltham, and she will be addressing hundreds of doctors, pharmacists, and police officers -- all of them involved in the fight against the opioid crisis here in massachusetts. now beacon hill is taking action as well. this comes as state lawmakers take new action to fight this deadly trend. there were an estimated 1,200 deaths from heroin and opioid related overdoses last year. a new plan passed by the state senate encourages doctors to find new approaches for treating pain and explain their use of high risk options in writing. the bill also implements verbal drug screening in all public schools to determine if students are at risk for addiction. that plan now moves to the house.

the attorney general's speech scheduled for about 9:45 this morning. randy: six students at lowell high school have been suspended after a racially fueled group text went viral. school leaders tell the lowell sun the conversation started after the student body elected a black senior as the class president. the chain went viral after one of the students posted the screen shot online. erika: police in manchester, new hampshire, need your help finding two missing roommates. 57-year-old sue hutchinson and 36-year-old stephen andrade have not been seen or heard from in more than ten days. hutchinson hutchinson's family notified police. >> she was very regimented, very routine, never missed work, never missed doctor's appointments with her mother. when monday morning came, and they didn't see or hear from her, it raised a red flag. >> andrade's family says his disappearance also out of character. a car belonging to hutchinson was foupd a few blocks from her home.

randy: the "eyeopener" team ready to go. steps here to make sure students in new england are safe. erika: and getting a handle on the opioid crisis in the bay state. first, new this morning, this is a look at hurricane joaquin from space. astronaut scott kelly tweeting this photo just moments ago from the international space station. this is a big storm. cindy: pretty amazing. this storm hasn't moved since yesterday. the winds are 130 miles per hour, just sitting over the central bahamas. 20 to 25 inches of rain, just really, really tough. it looks like joaquin will start to lift away from the bahamas this evening.

that is good news for them. it really has shifted in terms of where it's headed in the next 24 hours. a huge shift with our computer models. a majority of them are now agreeing it's going to lift north of the bahamas and perhaps stay out to sea, not making landfall or bothering the east coast at all. the latest track from the hurricane center, big difference. in case you haven't checked in since yesterday, it is likely going to stay offshore. still close enough by, making its pass here locally on monday, that we'll have to watch it pretty carefully. independent from joaquin, there's been a ton of rain near the carolinas, all along the frontal boundary, which is lifting back toward us. in between, we have the squeeze play with the wind. along the coastline here, we are so concerned with beach erosion and the potential for minor coastal flooding at the times of high tide which today come in around 3:00 in the afternoon. tomorrow and sunday, about 4:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon. if you live along the coast, keep that in mind.

it shouldn't impact your commute too much. that stop and stare volume is going to pick up southbound as well. if you're traveling the pike, westbound side by the police barracks, there's an accident there. eastbound disabled car cleared by route 16. another crash cleared by the braintree split, and the expressway almost 30, braintree to boston. also watching red line delays this morning. they're minor. everything else is on schedule. erika: the question this morning, why? a gunman opening fire, killing at least nine on an oregon college campus. antoinette: police have not released a motive for the shooting rampage, but survivors say the gunman was targeting christians, asking them to stand up before he shot and killed nine of them. this tightknit community of roseburg, oregon, is reeling with grief this morning. students ran for cover yesterday as the shooter, now identified as 26-year-old chris harper mercer opened fire at umpqua community college.

law enforcement sources telling abc news four firearms recovered from the scene. mercer was killed during a shootout with police. seven others were wounded. three of them remain in critical condition this morning. frank, out to you. frank: in the wake of the oregon rampage, campus police here at umass boston and other colleges and universities in the area are reviewing their security procedures. >> it could be any of these people on campus. could be a visitor, faculty, staff, student. we have to prepare for that. frank: here they train for active shooter scenarios like the one at umpqua community college. they also work with students, staff, and the city police. 250,000 students in boston area schools. police say all of them should review their campus security plans. one tactic at umass boston, reviewing social media. we've seen often would be shooters telegraph their plans online. here at umass boston, frank holland, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: breaking news. the taliban claiming responsibility for a u.s. military plane crash.

this morning 14 people dead, including six american service members. the c-130 transport plane crashed approaching an airport in jalalabad. despite the claims from terrorist groups, the pentagon says the plane was not shot down. todd: this morning u.s. attorney general loretta lynch will be here in waltham for a summit on opioid addiction. it's something that led to 1,200 fatal overdoses last year here in massachusetts. now beacon hill taking action as well. a new plan passed by the state senate encourages doctors to find new ways for treating pain and explain their use of high risk options in writing. the bill also implements verbal drug screening in all public schools to determine if students are at risk for addiction. that now moves to the house. the attorney general set to speak here at 10:45 this morning. reporting live in waltham, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: breaking right now, the vatican is releasing a new statement on the pope's controversial meeting with the

year before. fall river in second place at 11.6%. springfield at 10.8%. boston just over 7%. randy: police have made an arrest in a 20-year-old murder case. 42-year-old james whitkowski is accused of murdering lena bruce. bruce was killed 23 years ago inside her south bay apartment in boston on massachusetts avenue. his wallet was found outside the murder victim's. it's set to be arraigned in court next week. randy: a driver, daniel depew, hit a brother and sister in worcester, drag the woman more than 200 yards down the street.

erika: we know that mustache is all you, randy. randy: all me. olessa: some people pay to have it removed. others pay to have it added. let's talk about the roads. sky 5 over the pike for us. this is westbound side. you can see the car that went off the roads by the police barracks in weston. the eastbound side is picking up rubber necking delays. that backup starts by route 9. north of town, we're still watching that volume, 93 south. crash cleared by river road. now there's another accident northbound by 128. so, of course, the southbound side is going to pick up some of those delays as well. once you get past it, it stays heavy down to the leverett connector. also still watching this one accident pike westbound. you just saw that live by the police barracks. eastbound side, disabled car cleared by route 16 and then more volume building on the expressway. almost 30 minutes now braintree to boston. we've got some delays on the trains this morning. minor delays for the orange line and the red line.

cindy: cloudy skies right now in boston. the temperature near 50. wind making it feel cooler. winds gusting along the coastline to around 30 miles per hour. we could see gusts to 45 or 50 on the cape through tomorrow, where there is a wind advisory in effect. also watching high tide this afternoon for minor coastal flooding. look at the temperatures in worcester. just 46 degrees. the rain right now is on the south shore and the cape. as we go through the day, that rain is going to be spreading north. the temperatures go nowhere, holding low to mid-50's here throughout the day. watch that rain come into boston by lunchtime. up near the new hampshire border by this evening. overnight, a period of rain with lingering showers into your saturday morning. thereafter, we'll begin to dry things out a little bit. by tomorrow, we're talking about an inch or two of rain on the cape, the islands, elsewhere. the amounts drop off less than a half inch to the north. all the while, we're going to watch things dry out a little bit on sunday. there is joaquin. looks like the official track on joaquin keeping it farther offshore. doesn't look like we'll have big impacts from joaquin on monday.
