5:01 am
this is long beach at high tide, and the surf was really up. plenty of splash-over too. flooding in some low-lying roads. but there is clearing ahead for us. danielle, that is very good news to hear this morning. good morning. that's correct. those winds that brought the very high surf yesterday will be lessening as we go through the day today. that should give a little bit of a break at the coastline. still looking for the potential of a little splashover. looking at satellite and radar, still socked in with clouds. high pressure still has control of us, but it's those strong winds out of the north and east that have been dominating. one thing is this stationary front that's been impacting us slide to go the south. so today doesn't look as wet as it's been the last several days. in fact, here's the future cast. notice as we go through the morning hours, there could be some patchy drizzle by the coast. definitely some low-lying clouds but other than that, most of us staying dry today.
5:02 am
the only exception would be farther north and west where you may see some breaks of sun by the end of the day. but more breaks of sunshine on the way. that should help warm up our temperatures. in fact, a major warm-up is coming. we'll talk about it in the seven-day forecast ahead. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. honoring two massachusetts-based airmen killed in a plane crash in afghanistan. the two were deployed out of hanscom air force base. frank: the pentagon has now released their names. as our jim lokay reports, the shock of the loss is still setting in. >> such a beautiful girl, you know. just beautiful. strong-hearted. strong-hearted. jim: this is hour first class airman randy hobson wants the world to remember first class airman casey ruiz. the 21-year-old lost her life along with senior airman nathan sartain. two of the six airmen killed along with five civilians. losing ruiz is personal. >> we lived with each other for

four months before we were our paths crossed. it worked out pretty well. she maintained security for hanscom. i worked for colonel vogel right here. reporter: the hanscom commander says many on the base can't recall such a loss in decades. >> the support that we receive to help our airmen get through this tragic time has been worthwhile. jim: while the details of the crash are still under investigation the focus here on helping each other through the ultimate sacrifice. >> strong-hearted as hell. she would help anyone through any situation. it's just the way she was. even when she needed help, she did it herself. she was so resilient. jim: as the flags here at hanscom remain at half mast randy and other members of the hanscom community will head to dover air base tomorrow for the dignified transfer bringing back
5:04 am
airmen casey ruiz and nathan sartain. i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: also in afghanistan, the pentagon investigating a deadly air strike. at least nineteen people at a "doctors without borders" clinic were killed. the charity organization believes the bombing was carried out by international coalition forces. u.s. officials say american forces were operating nearby. antoinette: an explosive situation during a haz-mat collection day at umass boston. members of the bomb squad taking the cautious course with several bottles of hazardous acid. a man cleaning out his father's basement found several bottles of picric acid, an explosive material normally found in laboratories. crews put the bottle in a bucket, and the bomb squad took over and exploded the bottles safetly in a dumpster. >> very unstable.
5:05 am
you can probably hold it but then if you want to take the top of the bottle off, it would be enough friction that it would react. antoinette: fire officials say no one was hurt. luckily the substance was found outside. normally safe disposal of picric acid can take several days inside labs. frank: five arrests in the chaos outside a worcester concert. police using pepper spray to break up the crowd outside the palladium friday night. now we are learning more about how things went so wrong. a chaotic scene at a party venue in worcester, police used pepper spray on what they call an out-of-control crowd. >> --everybody in their eyes. organized crowd." i said asked them, "do you have of get their attention.?" everybody is just kind of frank: hundreds of college students from all across the here to the palladium to dance and have a good time as part of the "i love college" party tour. the crowd became unruly around 10:30 friday night according to

yeah. p p geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
5:11 am
antoinette: 5:11. welcome back. this morning dozens of high school students are recovering after an awning collapsed on top of them. rescue crews in north carolina say a truck hit a support beam causing the concrete canopy to fall. at least 20 students were underneath. several of them were trapped under these concrete slabs.
5:12 am
suffering from serious injuries. >> it was just like a horror movie that came out of nowhere, it just happened. the kids inside were crying. antoinette: most of the students were at the high school in olin for a band competition. they were from school all over the area. frank: south carolina bearing the brunt of a stubborn storm. downtown charleston is closed to incoming traffic. rain has washed out some bridges, flooded roads, and left some drivers stranded. the torrential, record-setting rains are causing issues as far north as new jersey. president obama has declared a state of emergency in south carolina and ordered federal aid to help state and local efforts. antoinette: i know we've been talking about hurricane joaquin but that has nothing to do with it. that's the high surf that's coming to our area as well. danielle: that stubborn stationary front that just hasn't left the east coast. antoinette: pesky. danielle: pesky, yes. it's finally pulling away from us so that's great news. it's losing its grip. eventually we'll see more sunshine and warmer conditions.
5:13 am
let me show you what i'm talking about. we do have a low chance of seeing some drizzle both today and tomorrow. today the best chances are along the east coast of massachusetts. and tomorrow the best bet is really southeastern mass of seeing anything at all. other than that though, you notice tuesday and wednesday i leave out in terms of rain chances. and that's because we're going to see more sunshine and warmer conditions. right now we just are socked in with the clouds. really no rain out here as of yet. coming. notice that stationary front farther to the south now. there's hurricane joaquin getting closer to bermuda. we'll talk about that in just a second but first high pressure still has its grip on us which means that northeast fetch continues. and the winds continue to be on the stronger side bringing in low-level moisture. so as we go through the day today, here's what happens. notice it's very hit-or-miss, very patchy at best. but there could be some low-level drizzle.
5:14 am
low-level clouds for sure at the coast. those clouds make it all the way into worcester county. but notice north of manchester, the cloud deck. that is going to be the trend as we head towards the later half of the afternoon. notice the clouds kind of trying to pull out of here. still plaguing the east coast but out in western mass, southern new hampshire, that's where i'm cautiously optimistic we could see some sunshine. the best chances for the patchy drizzle in this area you see in green today but it is not a washout by any means. you can still do your outdoor activities. it's on the chilly side this morning. 42 degrees. look at concord at 38 this morning. it is is in the low 50's in boston. and those winds are still brisk. they're gusting up to about 0 miles an hour now on nantucket. but they are going to back off as we get through the later half of the afternoon and more so into tomorrow. high temperatures today will reach into the low to mid 50's, maybe a few upper 50's through
5:15 am
the afternoon, but it's still a pretty cloudy day. tonight with the clouds clearing just a touch we'll see temperatures drop into the 30's through the merrimack valley. low 40's in worcester. upper 40's in boston. and then tomorrow with a little more sunshine, although there still will be in clouds especially for you folks at the cape and the islands. temperatures rebound to right around 60 if not above. so it is a lot warmer out there. you're going to feel the difference. now there is that hurricane warning from the bahamas. we're watching joaquin very carefully. it is a category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 miles an hour. so it will make its past by the bahamas later this evening. once it does, it then turns out to sea. closest to us monday night into early tuesday. but really not doing much for us. so the next seven days look like this. temperatures warming up. we're back into the upper 60's by tuesday with some sunshine.
5:16 am
also notice i write "dry" in the seven-day. by wednesday 70 degrees and lots of sunshine. it will feel a lot nicer outside. antoinette and frank. antoinette: danielle, thank you. time right now is 5:15. here are some of the stories we are following right now. frank: one person is dead and eight others are injured after a gas explosion in new york city. it happened inside a three-story apartment building in brooklyn. the front of the building was blown into the street. fire officials suspect a recently disconnected stove may have caused the blast. the victim, a woman in her 60's, lived on the floor above. antoinette: another shooting on an arizona freeway. but investigators do not believe this incident is connection with the dozen of other highway shootings over the past few weeks. a driver claims someone fired off seven shots at his car. investigators believe the shooting may be a case of road rage. the victim believes the other driver was angry because he was not going fast enough. frank: state officials in washington are suspending duck tours in seattle. the moves comes after a deadly accident last month, five people were killed and dozens more hurt when one of the duck vehicles crashed into a tour bus. now the state wants the company's entire fleet
5:17 am
inspected. suspended the rides out of respect for the victims. the supreme court in session october. court watchers believe justices will be taking on a host of controversial topics. on the agenda, president obama's action on immigration. also on the docket, a challenge president's health care bill that calls for no-cost birth control to women. some religious hospitals, the mandate. and the court is also expected to consider the regulation of abortion clinics in texas. antoinette: a controversial move saint anslem wants to move its sports teams down from division two to three. but not everyone is on board with the decision. learned about the status change when the college submitted its application to the ncaa. >> the students that were recruited to come here were recruited under the illusion they would compete at a high level. now they are cheated of that opportunity. >> this is a good thing that people are speaking up.
5:18 am
we want to hear from them because the board has to make an informed decision at some point if an invitation is awarded to us. antoinette: the college says it is only exploring the possibility, and it will take months for the ncaa to make a decision. the college president adds the division change gives the school more options for how it distributes scholarship money. frank: today is the final game of the season for the sox and for the team's play-by-play guy. before last night's game against cleveland, don orsillo tweeted a video message from an old friend and former sox skipper terry francona. terry francona: i just want to wish you well in your last red sox' game. on a personal note, if you could stop by before you leave tomorrow and drop off a highlight tape so i have trouble sleeping over the winter, that always helps. never ceases to amaze how some of your calls can put me to sleep just like that.

this time, reacting to the shooting in oregon. his take on gun control. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: achieving a lifelong dream, house speaker john boehner seemed deeply moved watching pope francis speak to a joint session of congress. the next day, he resigned. although boehner claims the decision was finalized months earlier, while listening to the pope's call for a renewed spirit of fraternity, one can't help but wonder if the speaker was reminded just how dismal that prospect seems for the legislative body he presides over. during boehner's five-year tenure as speaker, a small but vociferous tea party-inspired group of representatives has increasingly stymied his leadership. boehner's been forced to repeatedly engage in ideologically-driven-- but politically unwinnable-- battles, one of which resulted in a damaging government shutdown in 2013. this fall promises more of the same on capitol hill. boehner has had enough.
5:26 am
and who can blame him? whatever you may think about his leadership skills, few would accuse boehner of not caring deeply about the institution of congress. nevertheless, he knows firsthand just how far the public's respect for the house and senate has plunged. it's no coincidence that all three of the leading g.o.p. presidential candidates have never held elective office. boehner also pulled no punches, referring to ultra-conservatives as "false prophets" willing to compromise less and less and holding little value at all for actual governance. by the end of october, such scorched-earth, political zealotry will no longer be boehner's problem, resting instead with the new speaker and ultimately the nation as well. pope francis called on congress to cooperate "generously for the public good." although that's unlikely given the recent past, here's hoping its most intractable members heed his words, if not their own outgoing speaker's final and

>> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." frank: the search for a missing ship caught in hurricane joaquin. the new clue search crews have found and the sailors from new england on board. antoinette: and commitment 2016. a raucous rally for bernie sanders in boston. danielle: another cool and mostly gray day ahead. but changes are on the way. when we'll see a warmup in the week ahead. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning!
5:28 am
"eyeopener." frank: good morning. just about 5:30 on this sunday morning. i'm frank holland. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio along with danielle vollmar. you've been tracking some of this rain we've been seeing, but luckily i think we're going to clear out today. danielle: i think i'm going to start becoming people's friend again. antoinette: oh, yes. frank: you always are. danielle: everybody blames me when it's rainy and windy. antoinette: she's just the messenger. danielle: you can see that the rain is still plaguing parts of the southeast. as for us, we're starting to dry things out. i can't rule out some patchy drezzal as we go through the later morning into the afternoon hours especially if you live along the east coast of massachusetts. other than that though, i am saying we are going to be cloudy and mainly dry today. it is not a washout by any means. those winds are still coming out of the north and east, creating brisk, cool conditions. that stationary front that has
5:29 am
been bringing up the rain sinking farther to the south so that is great news. temperatures this morning with a little clearing have dropped into the 40's in worcester, upper 30's in concord. but as we go through the afternoon, we will see temperatures rebound back into the mid 50's, maybe even a few upper 50's. notice there is there are maybe breaks of sunshine especially the farther north and west you live. later today. better chance for more sunshine forecast. of course, with that comes the warm up. we'll talk about when we could see 70's ahead. frank. frank: thanks a lot, danielle. right now the pentagon is investigating a deadly airstrike in afghanistan. 19 people are dead after the "doctors without borders" clinic was hit multiple times. the strikes began before dawn yesterday and lasted for nearly 45 minutes. among those killed were 12 of the charity group's staff members. antoinette: the search for a during hurricane joaquin picks up again this morning. that after the coast guard found a life ring from the "el faro" floating in the ocean.
5:30 am
because of high winds and rough seas. four of the sailors on that ship are from maine. two of the crew members, dylan from rockland. captain michael davidson is from windham. and the fourth mainer on the ship is michael holland from wilton. friends of the missing sailors are hoping and praying for the ship's safe return. >> you think about the worst but those guys are out there doing what they're trained to do. antoinette: while the discovery of the ship's life ring is significant, search crews say because of the high winds and rough seas, it could have easily blown off the ship. frank: commitment 2016. big buzz for democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. a near capacity crowd of 20,000 at the boston convention center. as pam cross explains, the senator from vermont surprising some political experts with his highly competitive campaign. bernie sanders: i don't have a super pac.

5:32 am
bernie sanders: it is not a left wing extremist ideal to say if somebody in this country works 40 hours a week that that person should not live in poverty. pam: sanders began this saturday by speaking to about 6,000 in springfield. he's leading in iowa and new hampshire polls. the vermont senator is trying to build donors and a political base in massachusetts. i'm pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: republicans on the road as well including carly fiorina. she was in new hampshire at the "american principles" project meeting. the group in hooksett wants to limit the powers of the federal government. >> we've come to a place where our government is both inept and corrupt at what it is supposed to do, and inept and corrupt in doing things it is not supposed to do. antoinette: fiorina will meet with former bay state senator scott brown today and and hold a town hall meeting tonight. frank: g.o.p. presidential

suggesting teachers should carry guns. at a campaign rally in tennessee, trump said that if teachers has been armed during the mass shooting at a community college in oregon the incident would not have been as tragic. trump: by the way it was a gun-free zone. i will tell you if you had a couple of the teachers or somebody with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off. frank: trump also vowed to uphold gun rights while attacking calls for more gun control. antoinette: we're learning more about the heroes in the oregon community college shooting. from the man who confronted the shooter to a woman who tried to save her friends. we're also learning more about how the gunman died. nursing students can't forget what happened thursday at you were qua community college. >> rapid, rapid fire. antoinette: but shi and her classmates quickly found out what they thought were fire crackers outside their room were gunshots. her friend kim had no idea until she was hit.

degrees. and there has been some frost advisories up through northern new england as temperatures have dipped right around freezing if not below. those winds are pretty gusty out there. gusting upwards of 30 miles an hour on nantucket. so they are strong. not as strong as yesterday. and tomorrow they start to lessen which is great news. we get a break from that northeast wind. that northeast wind is also bringing in a lot of moisture. so that's why in boston today expecting cloud cover. and there could even be some patchy drizzle especially along our coastal communities. and the winds stay pretty strong through the afternoon out of the north and east. high temperatures climbing into the mid 50's in boston. mid 50's in taunton. 5 in hyannis. 61 on nantucket. so warmer down to the south. we're going to see warmer conditions continue. as we look at satellite and radar, not really much is going on this morning. it's just cloudy out there. perhaps some breaks in the cloud deck. there's an indication that we
5:42 am
could see some, some breaks of sunshine today. although that will be very far north and west. we are watching joaquin down to the south. still a category 3 hurricane. it is headed out to sea but before it does so, it will move over the bahamas. that stationary front that gave us pretty steady rain sinking farther to the south. so today it really is just about some drizzle. that is really itment not a washout. you can still what you want to do outside. it will just be cloudy and still pretty cool. so by 9:00 see a couple of showers popping up on the map and the drizzle along the south shore and the cape. they continue through the afternoon but notice start to go see some breaks in the cloud deck especially southern new hampshire out in western mass. we're going to see more of that as we go through the day and even into tomorrow. so the patchy drizzle in this area right in here, tonight with some clearing, temperatures dropping into the 30's. and then tomorrow with the wind changing to north we'll see everybody warming back into the low to even mid 60's.
