6:00 am
>> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." deployed out of hanscom air force base honored after a tragic plane crash. how the hanscom community is remembering these heroes. frank: a frightening scene as a trapping students outside a north carolina high school. the students recovering right now, and what caused that beam to come crashing down. danielle: another cold and when we could see some breaks of sun and warmer temps. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." frank: it's sunday, october 4. good morning. i'm frank holland. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. as hurricane joaquin looms in the atlantic, a massive rainstorm brings flooding to the carolinas and high surf to our coast. this is what it was like in plymouth yesterday afternoon. this is long beach at high tide, and the surf was really up. plenty of splash-over too. flooding in some low-lying roads.
6:01 am
but there is clearing ahead for us. maybe sunday will be a little better than that raw, windy, danielle. danielle: i think we can do good morning. we do have clouds out there this morning, but there are some breaks in the cloud deck. we are getting indications we could see some breaks of sunshine actually later this afternoon. of course, this is the farther northwest you go. right now high pressure dominating with those strong gusty winds out of the north and east but that stationary front that has been plaguing us the last couple of days sliding to the south, losing its grip on us , meaning we won't see consistent, steady rain like we've seen the last couple of days. temperatures are in 40's in worcester. 30's in concord. and low 50's in boston and plymouth. as we go through the next 12 hours in boston, temperatures are going to warm up into the mid 50's but it's still a cool day out there and a cloudy one especially by the coastline where you could still see some
6:02 am
patchy drizzle. those winds very gusty out of the north and east at about 15-20. the highest temperature today only warming into the mid to upper 50's. we will have mostly cloudy skies but there could be some breaks the farther north and west you go. but warmer air is down to our south. and eventually we're going to tap into this later in the week so we'll talk about when we could see 70's in the seven-day forecast ahead. antoinette? antoinette: danielle, thank you. honoring two massachusetts-based airmen killed in a plane crash in afghanistan. the two were deployed out of hanscom air force base. frank: the pentagon has now released their names. as our jim lokay reports, the shock of the loss is still setting in. >> such a beautiful girl, you know. just beautiful. strong-hearted. strong-hearted. jim: this is how first class airman randy hobson wants the world to remember first class airman ksey ruiz. the 21-year-old lost her life in thursday's crash over afghanistan. along with senior airman nathan
6:03 am
sartain. both from hanscom, two of the six airmen killed along with five civilians. for hobson, losing ruiz is personal. >> we lived with each other for about, i'd say like three or four months before our paths crossed. it worked out pretty well. she defended the base. she maintained security for everything on hanscom. i worked for colonel vogel right here. he's the commander of the base. jim: the hanscom commander says many on the base can't recall such a loss in decades. >> the support that we receive to help our airmen get through this tragic time has been worthwhile. jim: while the details of the crash are still under investigation, the focus here on helping each other through the ultimate sacrifice. >> she was strong-hearted as hell. she would help anyone through any situation. it's just the way she was. even when she needed help, she did it herself. she was so resilient. jim: as the flags here at hanscom remain at half mast, randy and other members of the hanscom community will head to
6:04 am
dover air force base tomorrow for the dignified transfer bringing back the remains of first class air airmen ksey ruiz and nathan senior airmen nathan sartain. at hanscom air force base, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: also in afghanistan, the pentagon investigating a deadly air strike. at least nineteen people at a "doctors without borders" clinic were killed. the charity organization believes the bombing was carried out by international coalition forces. u.s. officials say american forces were operating nearby. antoinette: an explosive situation during a haz-mat collection day at umass boston. members of the bomb squad taking hazardous acid. a man cleaning out his father's basement found several bottles of picric acid, an explosive material normally found in laboratories. bucket, and the bomb squad took over and exploded the bottles
6:05 am
safely in a dumpster. >> very unstable. as it gets older, it like crystallizes. you can probably hold it but then if you want to take the top of the bottle off, it would be enough friction that it would react. antoinette: fire officials say no one was hurt. luckily the substance was found outside. normally safe disposal of picric acid can take several days inside labs. frank: five arrests in the chaos outside a worcester concert. police using pepper spray to break up the crowd outside the palladium friday night. now we are learning more about how things went so wrong. a chaotic scene at a party venue in worcester, police used pepper spray on what they call an out-of-control crowd. >> --everybody in their eyes. >> they were saying, "we need an organized crowd." i said asked them, "do you have a microphone or anything to kind of get their attention.?" "no." everybody is just kind of screaming. frank: hundreds of college students from all across the area and other young adults came here to the palladium to dance and have a good time as part of
6:06 am
the crowd became unruly around 10:30 friday night according to a worcester police press release. police say the staff told worcester officers hired to work security some people were trying to use counterfeit tickets. police say the crowd also removed barriers used to organize lines, and several fights broke out. >> what happened here tonight kids, you know, just acting reckless in front of the door. so the police had to shut it down. frank: all officers in the city were called to the scene. troopers and a k9 also called to assist. promoters then decided to end the party early. according to police, that did not sit well with the people outside who paid as much as $30 a ticket. police say the pepper spray was deployed in the air to get the crowd to move. no one was sprayed directly. >> once they were pepper spraying, i just closed my eyes and ran. everybody's eyes were burning. everybody was screaming. frank: five men between the ages of 18 and 23 were arrested. all charged with disorderly
6:07 am
cracking down on underage college drinking, launching its "operation safe campus" initiative. the state's alcoholic beverages control commission says it will be monitoring bars and liquor stores near college campuses that have had problems with fake i.d.'s in the past. a.b.c.c. says it caught more than 200 minors last year and confiscated 122 cases of beer. frank: the city of brockton cracking down on crime. new f.b.i. statistics show the number of overall violent crimes is down nearly 15 percent from 2013 to 2014. but the murder rate is causing some alarm. 12 people were murdered last year. the city has taken steps to make the streets safer. they've added more officers to the force. antoinette: last call for a quincy landmark. the beachcomber celebrated with a sold-out crowd who danced the night away with the drop kick murphys. the popular venue opened its doors in 1959 and was a staple of the boston music scene for decades. the beachcomber will be
6:08 am
demolished to make way for a high-end restaurant which will be constructed on higher ground to escape the flood zone on quincy shore drive. a controversy right now at a new hampshire college. a plan to move sports teams to division three of the ncaa isn't sitting well with some. frank: how this move could benefit students who receive scholarships. an explosion rattles a neighborhood in brooklyn, killing one and injuring several others. what may have caused the blast. antoinette: several students in north carolina are recovering this morning after a roof collapses on them. the terrifying incident that left those students trapped underneath. danielle: another cloudy day on tap for us, but there are big changes on the way for the week ahead. when it will clear up and my timeline for warmer
6:09 am
antoinette: 6:11. welcome back. dozens of high school students are recovering after an awning collapsed on top of them. rescue crews in north carolina say a truck hit a support beam causing the concrete canopy to fall. at least 20 students were underneath. several of them were trapped under these concrete slabs.
6:10 am
suffering from serious injuries. >> it was just like a horror movie that came out of nowhere, it just happened. the kids inside were crying. antoinette: most of the students were at the high school for a band competition. they were from schools all over the area. frank: south carolina bearing the brunt of a stubborn storm. downtown charleston is closed to incoming traffic. rain has washed out some bridges, flooded roads, and left some drivers stranded. the torrential, record-setting rains are causing issues as far north as new jersey. president obama has declared a state of emergency in south carolina and ordered federal aid to help state and local efforts. antoinette: that same storm has caused a lot of trouble there, a lot of high surf here. it has been sitting around. danielle: it was a stationary front that came through earlier last week and just parked and set up shop. now the good thing for us is that it's moving to the south today. which means it's losing its grip on our weather. so the rain chances are going down. let me show you this.
6:11 am
the rain impacts are low today. also low tomorrow. notice by tuesday and wednesday they aren't in the forecast which is great news. now today the best chances for some drizzle potentially is going to be along the east coast of massachusetts. and then tomorrow it's really just the cape and the islands. southeastern mass that could see some patchy drizzle. other than that, we are mainly dry all day long. that's why i'm sure you all are welcoming that in at least for your outdoor activities today. it will still be on chile side. we still have that system marked down to the south. we're watching hurricane joaquin. we're going to talk about that in just a second because it does have its eye set on bermuda before it moves out of here. then high pressure is really dominating our weather so we have those strong, pesky winds out of the north and east. unfortunately, if those winds travel over the ocean waters, it brings in low-level moisture. low-level clouds. that's what we're starting with this morning especially along the coastline. notice by 10:00 there could be
6:12 am
some patchy showers or drizzle out there. it's really patchy at best. we are start to go dry out. even maybe seeing some breaks of sun out in western mass and southern new hampshire. although i am cautiously optimistic about the sunshine because a lot of us will still be seeing the clouds through the day today. but as we go through the later half of the day, notice it's starting to trend and move farther to the south and finally we're going to get a brick from all of this. the best bet for the drizzle today is this area in green. if you live outside of it, you're probably dry but we're still talking about clouds and cool temperatures. starting at 42 in worcester, 45 in orange this morning, 44 in lawrence, through concord there's frost advisories through new hampshire and vermont today especially up in northern new england. winds still pretty gusty especially at the coastline. you can see this now. winds up to near 0 miles an hour on nantucket. and so they're going to be breezy today. not as strong as yesterday. that's why we're not as
6:13 am
concerned about the high tides this afternoon. but still there may be some minor splashover but no coastal flood advisories or anything to talk about. temperatures today only warming into the mid to upper 50's. and then tonight dropping back with clearing skies into the 30's in the merrimack valley. then tomorrow those winds start to die down and temperatures start to warm back up into the low to even mid 60's. i just want to talk about joaquin real quickly. headed out to sea but it is a category 3 hurricane getting close to bermuda. it will make a pass at it later tonight as a category 2 hurricane before turning and moving out to sea. our next search days i do want to talk about tomorrow a little bit because we will see some breaks in the cloud deck by about 3:00. but still if you live in southeastern mass, the clouds continue to persist until about 8:00. and then everybody starts to see clearing and more sunshine on tuesday. of course with that temperatures
6:14 am
rebound into the upper 60's, low 70's both tuesday and wednesday. antoinette and frank. antoinette: danielle, thank you. it's 6:15. here are some of the stories we are following right now. frank: one person is dead and eight others are injured after a gas explosion in new york city. it happened inside a three-story apartment building in brooklyn. the front of the building was blown into the street. fire officials suspect a recently disconnected stove may have caused the blast. the victim, a woman in her 60's, lived on the floor above. antoinette: another shooting on an arizona freeway. but investigators do not believe this incident is connected with the dozen of other highway shootings over the past few weeks. a driver claims someone fired off seven shots at his car. investigators believe the shooting may be a case of road rage. the victim believes the other driver was angry because he was not going fast enough. frank: state officials in washington are suspending duck tours in seattle. the move comes after a deadly accident last month. five people were killed and dozens more hurt when one of the duck vehicles crashed into a tour bus. now the state wants the company's entire fleet inspected.
6:15 am
the tour operator had already suspended the rides out of respect for the victims. the supreme court in session tomorrow the first monday in october. court watchers believe justices will be taking on a host of controversial topics. on the agenda, president obama's action on immigration. also on the docket, a challenge to a provision in the president's health care plan that calls for no-cost birth control to women. some religious hospitals, charities, and colleges oppose the mandate. and the court is also expected to consider the regulation of abortion clinics in texas. antoinette: a controversial move by a local college. saint anslem wants to move its sports teams down from division two to three. but not everyone is on board with the decision. some families say they only learned about the status change when the college submitted its application to the ncaa. >> the students that were recruited to come here were recruited under the illusion they would compete at a high level. now they are cheated of that opportunity. >> this is a good thing that people are speaking up. we want to hear from them
6:16 am
because the board has to make an informed decision at some point if an invitation is awarded to us. antoinette: the college says it is only exploring the possibility, and it will take months for the ncaa to make a decision. the college president adds the division change gives the school more options for how it distributes scholarship money. frank: today is the final game of the season for the sox and before last night's game against cleveland, don orsillo tweeted a video message from an old friend and former sox skipper terry francona. terry francona: don, i just want to wish you well in your last red sox game. on a personal note, if you could stop by before you leave tomorrow and drop off a highlight tape so if i have trouble sleeping over the winter, that always helps. never ceases to amaze me how some of your calls can put me to sleep just like that.
6:17 am
watching you guys. i'm glad i got to be a little bit of a part of that. take care. frank: a nice message from tito. a rough night for the sox in cleveland. brock holt takes one off the knee. he had to be helped off the field, but the medical staff is saying it's just a bruise. the indians getting the only offense of the game. carlos santana with a solo homer off craig breslow in the second. two innings later, it was ryan raburn's turn. indians shut out the sox 2-0. the final game today in cleveland. first pitch at 3:10. antoinette: it's one of the most photographed events of the year. frank: we take you to new mexico and the international balloon festival. wait 'til you see what happens after the sun goes down. antoinette: and a live look across worcester this morning. the sun is starting to come up. those clouds are parting. we're seeing a little bit of that sky this morning. it is 6:19. 53 degrees if you're headed

p with hood, cottage cheese can be pineapple on a waffle. or cucumber and dill as a dip. with 8 delicious flavors of hood cottage cheese, the possibilities are endless. always good. always hood. danielle: welcome back. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. starting out this morning in the 40's, 50's and even a few 30's on the map. if you're headed out first thing, you definitely want to grab a coat especially in the merrimack valley. starting in the 30's in concord. local live radar. nothing on it right now. we have low-level clouds out there. there could be patchy drizzle along the et coast for the day today.
6:20 am
now the big story is this. temperature s are on the way up. not necessarily today. we saw the gusty wind out of the north and east. still feeling cool, raw, cloudy outside. by monday we're at 60 degrees with more sunshine. and by wednesday we're already at 70. if you're looking for something to do this weekend, the topsfield fair is ongoing today. cloudying breezy conditions. mid 50's. tomorrow even though it's a chilly start we'll see breaks of sunshine through the day and temperatures warm to near 60 degrees. antoinette? antoinette: danielle, thank you. it was a day of education and empowerment for breast cancer survivors at the massachusetts day of caring in norwood. i was honored to emcee the "model of hope" fashion show portion of the event with breast cancer survivors showing off local fashions. the day featured a number of breast cancer-related educational sessions. october is breast cancer awareness month. it's considered one of the most photographed events of the world.
6:21 am
frank: tens of thousands of people are in new mexico to watch the international balloon fiesta, more than 500 balloons filling the sky. star wars fans well represented with darth vader and yoda balloons. the balloons representing dozens of states and nearly 20 different countries. even after nightfall the show is pretty spectacular. antoinette: it's not so much after night fall. that's really early in the morning. they have what's called a dawn patrol that goes up in the air, checks all the conditions, makes sure it's safe. i know a lot about this. i lived there for like seven years. frank: looks like a good time. antoinette: it is. the kids love the star wars ones. frank: a sport unlike any other. this morning we're introducing you to bubble soccer, and we'll tell you where you can join in on the fun. feeling the "bern." a huge rally as democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders rolls into town. frank: and donald trump making headlines again. this time, reacting to the shooting in oregon. his take on gun control. antoinette: and a live look outside over the city of boston
6:22 am
this morning. still some clouds out there. but you know what? danielle has good news for us. he says clearing is on the way. more on your forecast after this. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: achieving a lifelong dream, house speaker john boehner seemed deeply moved watching pope francis speak to a joint session of congress. the next day, he resigned. although boehner claims the earlier, while listening to the pope's call for a renewed spirit of fraternity, one can't help but wonder if the speaker was reminded just how dismal that prospect seems for the legislative body he presides over. during boehner's five-year vociferous tea party-inspired group of representatives has increasingly stymied his leadership. boehner's been forced to repeatedly engage in ideologically-driven-- but politically unwinnable-- battles, one of which resulted
6:23 am
in a damaging government shutdown in 2013. this fall promises more of the same on capitol hill. boehner has had enough. and who can blame him? whatever you may think about his leadership skills, few would accuse boehner of not caring deeply about the institution of congress. nevertheless, he knows firsthand just how far the public's respect for the house and senate has plunged. it's no coincidence that all three of the leading g.o.p. presidential candidates have never held elective office. boehner also pulled no punches, referring to ultra-conservatives as "false prophets" willing to compromise less and less and holding little value at all for actual governance. by the end of october, such scorched-earth, political zealotry will no longer be boehner's problem, resting instead with the new speaker and ultimately the nation as well. pope francis called on congress to cooperate "generously for the public good." although that's unlikely given the recent past, here's hoping its most intractable members heed his words, if not their own outgoing speaker's final and

lawn furniture is is gone. danielle: i had a winter coat on yesterday. that's how cold i was. i'm just saying. let me tell you today is going to be a little bit. each and every day we see more improvement. today there are a lot of clouds out there, but we are seeing a little bit of break in the cloud deck. we'll see more breaks as we head through the afternoon. but those winds are very strong out of the north and east. the reason we've been seeing the rain is due to this stationary front. this is sinking to the south losing its grip on us. but, of course, with northeast winds moving over that cool ocean water, we can't rule out a couple of isolated pockets of drizzle especially along the east coast. starting in the 50's on the vineyard, 53 taunton. and in boston over the next 12 hours here's what you can expect pretty much cloudy skies through the day. warmer spots may be along the cape and the islands where temperatures may warm as high as the upper 50's today. but warmer conditions are on the way. more sunshine in the forecast.

the details coming up. frank? frank: thanks a lot, danielle. right now the pentagon is investigating a deadly airstrike in afghanistan. 19 people are dead after the "doctors without borders" clinic was hit multiple times. the strikes began before dawn yesterday and lasted for nearly 45 minutes. among those killed were 12 of the charity group's staff members. antoinette: the search for a missing cargo ship lost at sea during hurricane joaquin picks up again this morning. that after the coast guard found a life ring from the "el faro" floating in the ocean. the search suspended last night because of high winds and rough seas. four of the 33 sailors on that ship headed for puerto rico are from maine. two of the crew members, dylan meklin and danielle ranolph, are from rockland. captain michael davidson is from windham. and the fourth mainer on the ship is michael holland from wilton. friends of the missing sailors are hoping and praying for the ship's safe return. >> you think about the worst but those guys are out there doing what they're trained to do. antoinette: while the discovery of the ship's life ring is
6:28 am
significant, search crews say because of the high winds and rough seas, it could have easily blown off the ship. frank: commitment 2016. big buzz for democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. a near capacity crowd of 20,000 at the boston convention center. as pam cross explains, the senator from vermont surprising some political experts with his highly competitive campaign. bernie sanders: i don't have a super pac. i don't want a super pac. and i don't need a super pac. i do not represent the agenda of the billionaire class or corporate america, and i don't want their money. pam: they packed the convention center to overflowing. bernie sanders's appeal to a younger demographic is clear as his supporters assemble. this saturday night date one of his biggest events so far. many wait to go hear sanders hit

trigger, 26-year-old student chris harper-mercer. he came armed with six guns including an automatic rifle and wore a bullet-proof vest. law enforcement was on the scene within six minutes. two minutes after that, the gunman was down. >> the medical examiner has reported to us that the cause of death was suicide. antoinette: the shooter lived with his mother and had once tried to become a soldier but in 2008. just one month into basic training, the military discharged him for failing to meet the minimum standards. and a memorial to the victims is growing just outside the campus. classes on campus have been canceled through next week. frank: boston police are searching for a suspect wanted for a brazen carjacking. investigators are just releasing this surveillance video of the suspect. a woman claims she was parking her car in the south end when a man pushed his way into her car. she managed to get away. the car was found later on peterbough street where it had been set on fire. police also released this closer

kathy curran has details. kathy: we're talking about a company that was paid millions in tax dollars to drive people on mass health to medical appointments, but sources tell us that company rite-way is under investigation by multiple state agencies. the rite-way vehicles parked in this lot in avon aren't going anywhere any time soon. sources tell "5 investigates" the attorney general's office is looking into the way the company recruited clients and whether they billed for services not provided. rite-way abruptly stopped giving rides to thousands of clients statewide three weeks ago. laurie gregory: i was told to let my drivers know that we were closed until further notice. kathy: rite-way manager laurie gregory was shocked when she got the call at her cape cod office. she says as far as she knows, everything is on the up-and-up. laurie gregory: i knew that i was doing everything appropriately that needed to be done.
6:38 am
i know some stuff was being said, but i knew none of that was true because i did my job the right way. the people in the other parts of the company, like different areas, they all did their job the right way. kathy: records obtained by "5 investigates" showed rite-way billed the state far more than any of its competitors. the transportation company's billing to the state skyrocketed from just $375,000 a year in 2012 to nearly $16 million this past fiscal year. a figure five times bigger than any other provider of non-emergency transportation. we tried to talk to rite-way owner michael davini at his vacation home on an island in rindge, new hampshire, as his boat was being hauled out of the water, but davini wasn't home. in a statement davini says, "we have always done our best to act fully within the law, and we expect that this will be confirmed by a complete investigation." john cardoza: it just got shut
