continues for the shi that went missing during hurricane joaquin. the coast guard describes a suit as unidentifiable. phil: 33 crew members were on board and three pr mass -- from massachusetts. newscenter 5's todd -- todd kazakiewich is live with more. reporter: both of the missing men trained on the ship behind me known as the kennedy. tonight on campus there is tremendous anxiety as we await word on their fate. >> keith was a marin engineer so his formal training was done by the staff. his experience at sea was done with me. reporter: keith griffin is seen here back when he was a cadet at massachusetts maritime academy more than 10 years ago. today the academy administrators held a press

conference detailing his training and their concern about the fate of the crew. >> the mariners don't fear too much. they fear this. when their ship mates and their friends are involved in a marine tragedy. reporter: he moved from massachusetts to florida in 2007. he now lives in fort myers. his wife katie is pregnant with twins. and we are now learning more about a second mass maritime dwrad -- grad. he is a married father of three and like keith griffin he is an engineer. debris and a life boat from the sunken cargo ship has been found as well as the body of one sailor in a survivor suit. here they are still holding out hope. >> it is a somber day to be sure, but we are holding out hope that we get some perhaps surprising good news with maybe a coast guard discovery. phil: that was todd

kazakiewich reporting. tragedy on an american airlines flight bound for boston. the pilot gets sick and dies. rhondella richardson just talked with passengers and she is live at logan. reporter: the phoenix-based pilot was 57 and still awaiting the medical examiner's report, but passengers tell us things happened too fast to be scared. they were told of the emergency landing and then on the ground. american airlines flight 550 passengers are full of sympathy and gratitude after finally arriving at logan airport. their pilot died in flight. >> if it wasn't for the copilot using a cool head it might have been more disastrous. >> you put your life in this guy's hands and he is gone. >> personnel on board, but one of the pilots is unresponsive. reporter: the red eye from phoenix diverted to syracuse, new york at 7:13 a.m. the crew did announce the pilot wasn't feeling well.

i thew it -- i few it was an illness. we went into a quick descend and i thought there is something wrong. >> we were on the ground in five to seven minutes, 10 max. i never landed on an airplane that quick. there were ambulances waiting when the plane got to the gate. they put tarps up so we couldn't see anything out the windows. reporter: the flight arrived to boston about 12:30, delayed therely five hours -- nearly five hours, but everyone understanding. >> we had to wait for the body to be removed from the plane. it was intense. >> they seemed like they knew exactly how to do this. they have practiced many times. reporter: american airlines in a statement say thisy are incredibly saddened by this event and focused on caring for the pilot's family and colleagues. rhondella richardson, wcvb newscenter 5. jc: a natural disaster is to blame for a serious train derailment in vermont.

seven passengers were hurt. heather has more. reporter: the amtrak train just started its 14-hour trip to washington, d.c. when it slammed into rocks that had fallen off of a ledge on to the tracks. it happened about 10 minutes from mount pilear. train. you can see the cars toppled over. sky 5 was over the scene and the train had 98 passengers on board. of the seven injured only one was hurt. school buses took the remaining passengers to norwich university. >> felt something and it was like a bump. the next thing we knew we swerved to the left and swerved to the right. we were all going, oh no. >> the car came up this way the ditch. ours ended up on its side. reporter: the company that operates that stretch of track has had four accidents since 2006 and it may have involved debris on the tracks. on sunday night a freight train used the same stretch of

tracks without any problems. phil? phil: heather, thanks. a standoff in winthrop ends up with a man cuffed and hauled away on a stretcher. you can see the pictures there. police were called to shirley street for a domestic incident. they say the man threatened a woman and threatened to burn down the house and even fired a pellet gun at officers who eventually got uh hold of the suspect and -- uh hold of the suspect and now he is facing a long list of charges. jc: record rainfall is being blamed for 11 deaths. right now in south carolina tens of thousands are without water and power. rescuers on the move are navigating areas on boats. it is the only way they can get around neighborhoods still under water in south carolina. forts of -- parts of the state drenched with two feet of rain in days. >> it is not over. just because the rain stops means we are out of the woods. reporter: a warning from the governor adding scenes like these, swollen waters and

submerging cars and homes and leaving some street signs barely above the water line and a bed frame wrapped in a tree are snap shots of a dire and dangerous situation. >> everything i own has been destroyed. >> my cats are down with my car down there. reporter: hundreds left without water. some 25,000 are without power and for than 500 roads closed. more evacuations may be necessary noting 1300 members of the national guard have been activated and 7,000 more are on stand by with rivers decades. >> the biggest cal lengths that we face is following the wave of the water from the midlands down to the coast. road closures and trying to upon ter those and making sure we are watching them properly. jc: it is tremendous to see the devastation happening and this is from rainfall coming in by the feet.

harvey: feet of rain. inches is hard and feet of rain is a whole other incident. those are the contours of the amazing stuff. you don't see it that often. it is still raining in the carolinas. not as heavily as it was before around a charleston and parts of south carolina, but there is still significant rain in eastern north carolina ocean. the spinning circulation that is ever so slowly wandering eastward. here are the rainfall amounts. over 22 inches and we can see florence, myrtle beach, char stone -- charleston and columbia. those are the four bordered areas with the incredible amounts of rain. it is along i-thine 5. i-95. you have the sharp gradients going east and west four inches and you are over 16. no matter how you slice it, it is brutal for those folks. a real tragic situation. for us it has been a battle only today between clouds and sun.

nice at times and especially over the inland areas and still clouds over the coast. the wind is slowly starting to come to the north. that's good news. and they diminished. if you will be out in boston it will be dry and temperatures will be in the upper 40s to start your day and a brighter day tomorrow. a little milder and well into the 60s. some spots could approach 70. we will talk about the rest of the week. >> hillary clinton is getting emotional at a campaign stop. the gun control plan she unveiled. ed, one member of the audience had a personal story to share. ed: very personal. it was the mother of a sandy hook victim on the stage. mrs. clinton promised a lot of changes to combat gun violence in the wake of yet another tragic school shooting. remember the one in oregon. she said she will push to for a gun law that will prevent

and both sides of 495 are looking okay. so traveling is smooth, but you know how it is. rush hour starts earlier and earlier. phil: we are hearing from one of those students who survived the mass shooting. jc: how her decision to play dead saved her life. phil: the police officer seen assaulting an inmate with a plea deal. the question that remains. jc: conflicting reports tonight about why an assault was ordered in afghanistan. phil: and this is nothing new, teenagers stepped to -- stepped to stay up late.

. you're watching newscenter 5 at 5:00. phil: from roseburg, oregon one of the students who lived through the horrific college shooting is telling her story of terror. in an ichs -- in an exclusive she talked about how playing dead kept her alive. >> she is a survivor. >> i didn't think i would make it. >> the college student she speaking from her wheelchair from the hospital. she recounted the terrifying minutes inside the umpqua community college when the gunman opened fire. >> i could hear everyone breathing hard and freaking out and crying. >> she says the gunman spoke to them. >> he sounded really deranged. he said he had been waiting to do that for a really longtime and he laughed. >> he laughed? >> he laughed after he shot the teacher. >> and then described how he picked out one student

specifically to be the one who would live to tell the story. >> he said the kid in the glasses, get up. i need you to do me a favor. today's your lucky day. he hands him this like business envelope because he wasn't going to be able to do that after he was done killing the rest of us. himself. >> she says he questioned each of his victims. >> had us get up one by one and asked us what our religions were. >> when the student said his religion he was shot? >> the shooter said that he would only feel the pain for a couple of seconds and that he would be with god soon, and then he shot them. >> she lived by playing dead keeping her eyes shut and it was over. the shooter as promised took

his own life. umpqua community college reopened today, but there will be no classes until next week. jc: philadelphia colleges and universities are on alert after an fbi warning of a threat posted on-line. the message indicates an attack will be carried out today, but does not mention a specific location. campuses have increased security and are not taking any chances since the threat comes days after the oregon shooting. jc: a teenage surfer is recovering from a shark bite. he was in the water in florida when he was bitten on the hand. it happened yesterday morning. the teen punched the shark before making it back to shore 100 yards away. phil: a frantic search is underway in guatemala. more than 300 people are still missing after a massive landslide killed at least 131. dozens of homes were buried at the side of a rain-soaked hill thursday night near guatemala city. locals and rescue workers were

debris. many people did not listen to a warning to evacuate of. that's horrific. harvey: that's bad stuff. it is hard because even when there are warnings, social behaviors we never get 100% compliance. >> we see that with hurricanes and lizards. >> our weather is on the up swing, but if you go back to friday and saturday and how wet and miserable it was on the cape and the coast it has been getting better in increments. it is only in the 50s to about 60 across the region. a lot of folks are talking about how incredibly raw it was. we are not used to it feeling that way and certainly that was a little shock to our system. i have good news for you. the weather will be on the up swing the next few days. the wind is either around the northeast or to the north and diminished. we have 20 mile per hour winds around nantucket, but it was stronger than that in the days gone by.

how are we doing rainfall in boston. what happened last wednesday certainly helped some. but for boston, we are still running about six inches below average. october is running below average because the big rains came last week and not when we started october. at least not for boston. still have some of the remanence of the upper level system around the southeast. it has given insane amounts of rain. for us tonight it will be a cool night. in many areas the skies will be clear. there can be patchy clouds lingering along the shoreline. most down around the cape. that should burn off early tomorrow morning. a few spots could get in the upper 30s and most of the suburbs in the 40s and it will be around 50 on cape cod where awhile. tomorrow a milder day. degrees. more sunshine than we have well. so overall a nicer fall day and the winds will be quite

so not a factor at all. there can be patchy clouds early tomorrow and then a good deal of sunshine. if there are a few clouds and patchy clouds, another day with sunshine and thursday looks like a third day. each day will feature sunshine and all should feature a continuation of dry weather. this is where the storm is. that's joaquin. it is no longer the major hurricane it was. it is now a category 1. all of the warnings are gone. they were affected by the storm because it wasn't as potent as the bahamas. you can see that joaquin is continuing to stay out in the ocean and then it will be an ordinary storm. here we go with your improved weather. upper 60s for average high temperature. around a seven-day -- around 70. sun. if there is one day the rest of the week that could produce wet weather it will be about

5:30. phil: right now at 5:30, these graduates are missing at sea. their cargo ship caping near the bahamas. the life boat from the ship has been found, but no survivors have been found. plans are that the ships will search for the crew after the ship sank during hurricane joaquin. jc: and a tragedy on a flight. the pilot was ill and then later died on the strip from phoenix. the cocoa pilot made -- the copilot made an emergency landing in syracuse. phil: in vermont seven people are hospitalized after a locomotive and passenger car went down an embankment. the train was heading to washington, d.c. this morning. jc: harvey joins us now and it is 59 in needham. especially in the early
