cargo ship el faro will d at sunset. the cargo ship carrying several local sailors lost. here's new information. ed? >> three of the 33 crew members attended mass maritime academy and in less than two hours that search will be called off. the el faro sanked near the bahamas amidst 140 mile per hour winds and 90 foot waves. calling the search off was a very difficult and personal decision. >> we were searching for fellow professional mariners. we were also searching for members of the extended coast guard family. one of our petty officers, chief petty officers, had a brother that was on the el faro. >> the captain actually planned to steer around the hurricane but the ship lost power leaving it dead in the water. federal accident investigators say they will try to retrieve the el faro's data recorder from the 15,000 foot depth ocean

it all got under way. sarah: using the largest courtroom in the salem courthouse a judge is addressing 110 potential jurors to determine who will decide the fate of chism the 16-year-old is accused of raping and murdering his math teacher at the high school two years ago. 24-year-old colleen ritzer was a beloved teacher at the school. her family seated in the front row of today's proceeding. chism was 14 at the time of the killing but will be tried as an adult. his attorneys are planning to use a mental health defense and today the judge explained to potential jurors about finding someone not guilty because of mental disease or defect. the list of potential witnesses include calling ritzer's family as well as many students. the judge estimates this trial will last until mid-november. in salem, sarah, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> there is

the casino developer is suing for libel although the lawsuit doesn't identify who. no company that does business in massachusetts should be subjected to "defamatory, political abuse." he's building a state license crow in neighboring everest. >> protestors in support demonstrated. walsh has complained that traffic has become much more congested and pushed for boston to become the host community so voters have to say. the city also previously issued the state gaming commission over an access road to the casino. >> it's about five minutes past 5:00 and you're looking live at this gorgeous city of boston. a beautiful fall day. storm team five is with us. temperatures went into the 70s today. >> tonight, the warmest temperature we've had so far this month.

here's the satellite picture that shows you what's going on. clear skies but there is something to watch. there is a cold front to the west. by the time it gets here, it's dry. it will come through with a few clouds. we'll talk about overnight hours and tomorrow morning and then tomorrow will be a little cooler but today we had 71 degrees. normal high temperature at this time of year is 65. we were above it. tomorrow we'll get a little bit below it. here are the current temperatures. a lot of temperatures flirting at 70 right now. a few 60s showing up. tomorrow, as i mentioned, will be a little cooler with a few clouds. here's the way it looks over the next 12 hours. clouds sneaking through. and a little bit cool in the city, into the 50s but we'll see some of the suburbs again dropping into the 40s. we talk about tomorrow's forecast. there is the way the map looks tomorrow. you see clouds working their way in. we'll talk about when those clouds move out and when the temperatures go back up. all in a few minutes. >> tonight, threat of more of this. more flooding persists in south carolina. swollen rivers from the historic weekend flooding now making

>> unfortunately, people confirmed two people who disappeared after driving around a barricade bringing the death toll to 19. >> eastern kentucky university has canceled classes for the rest of this week following a threat written in a campus men's room. the threat read in part kill all by october 8. federal investigators are on the case now and the college is offering a $10,000 award to solve it. a similar threat was scrawled on a bathroom last february. it follows last week's massacre at a small oregon college. tonight there are some serious concerns about a thriving black market for nuclear materials overseas. the alleged sellers, gangs with russian ties. investigators say the intended customers are extremist groups like isis. with help from the f.b.i., police in the small european country of maldova arrested several men accused of trying to sell radioactive material.

>> setting off a dirty bomb in a dense area the level of contamination could be a big deal if nothing else from an economic standpoint. >> the radioactive material is believed to have come from russian hospitals. they also say there is no indication that isis is showing any interest in building dirty bombs. >> a cape cod police officer who ran over and killed a college student last winter has been cleared. the office says it will not charge chatham officer in the death of the man. he was responding to a business alarm early new year's day when he drove over the 22-year-old who we're told was lying in the street. investigators say he had alcohol and drugs in his system. state police say the driver of a car that crashed and rolled over the influence of drugs. sky 5 over the scene in milford where three people ended up trapped inside the car. police say the driver danica chapman had just taken something

that's a powerful drug commonly used to tranquilize animals. he's facing several charges tonight. the other two passengers in the car were treated for minor injuries and are expected to be okay. dorchester, a driver with a suspended license is accused of hitting a police cruiser overnight. this happened at columbia circle around 2:30 in the morning. the trooper who was not hurt was transporting a prison. he was taken to hospital medical center with minor injuries. the driver has been cited. >> big changes to the commuter rail schedule starting in may. nonstop service between union station and worcester is being added. the trip will take about an hour saving passengers about 30 minutes. that's just one of the many enhancements that were announced. the commuter rail schedules are undergoing revision as we speak. they will be published in november and will take effect at the end of the month. >> let's take a look at first alert traffic. southeast expressway looks like it's moving at this hour in both directions. we'll take

>> tonight we're learning that the suspect who opened fire at an oregon college turned the gun on himself in front of the students there. investigators have revealed that the gunman shot himself after being wound by police officers during a shoot-out. he's accused of killing nine people in last week's mass shooting. police recovered 14 firearms, six found at the college. another eight at his apartment. his mother says the 26-year-old dealt with mental health issues. >> commitment 2016. presidential candidates taking their message to critical voting states. one is urging another politician to jump into the race.

it keeps getting earlier and earlier and you have to plan a little bit if you want a picture. tonight it's at 6:16. by halloween, 5:39 and by the time we get to december 7, earliest of the year, an afternoon sunset. today was 71 degrees. the first time this month that we've been above average and it was way above average. up into the 70s today. typically we're supposed to be at about 65 for a high temperature. still holding on to our daytime high. humidity is comfortable. dew point number is down. a little westerly breeze at six miles per hour. nothing to complain about there. might be complaining about this. i've noticed a lot of people walking around. they have had the runny nose and scratchy throat. is it pollen or a cold? just checking the pollen count. it's not very high and it won't be very high so you may have one of those fall colds we're talking about. speaking of cold, hers a cold front out to the west. cooler air. it's not dramatically colder. tomorrow's temperature will be five or six degrees cooler than

notice there is the absence of moisture. a few sprinkles showing but it's of cloud cover that we're talking about. it comes sweeping through. maybe a few clouds in the afternoon. clear and cool. 44 to 50 for your overnight low. tomorrow, a if you clouds early, if you're an early sunrise -- if you wake up early tomorrow morning to see the sunrise you may run into a if you clouds. otherwise, sunshine, 60 to 64 your high temperature. makes it a nice day. degrees. friday, a few more clouds. in a washout but there may be few showers as they celebrate the sunflower this year. there is the cool air in place. starts coming in from the west. give us some rain. not an all day rain on friday. showers in the morning and in afternoon. eventually it will clear out and move out as we talk about the weekend. with tomorrow. a little cooler than today but still sunshine and 62.

what about those showers on friday? the timing on this is, early morning risers, not a problem but as you go through the morning hours into the early afternoon there will be a few hit-or-miss showers and a good chance we'll see them around the evening commute. an occasional downpour but not a washout. weekend, clearing, breezy and cooler weather comes in for saturday and some of you like to head north. columbus day weekend, looking for good leaves? the weather will be spectacular. by monday, columbus day, it doesn't feel like that foliage weather because so it's mild. we're getting reports things are running behind schedule. we're only seeing a peek if you're in the green mountains, colors are a little slow this year. they will pick it up in the next week as we talk about cooler air but there is not a lot of cool air in the forecast. two days there with rain. friday and tuesday of next week. otherwise, it's sunshine and mild conditions, and maybe even just a little above average for
