our jim lokay has the exclusive interview. >> she would call me from port and say, this is a great cruise! wish you were here. jim: those calls reminded mary shevory how much her daughter, mariette wright, lived for life on the sea. but it came to a halt two weeks ago, when she and 32 others were presumably lost, when the el faro went down in choppy atlantic waters stirred up by hurricane joaquin. >> i had no warning. i got a call one morning that the el faro went missing, and had gone down, and their weren' t -- there weren' t any survivors. jim: and as the days grew longer, the hope that maybe someone pulled through grew dimmer. and the question that remained was, why? >> i believe, if there was any way they could have prevented it, they would have. but the captain chose to ship out in that tropical storm. jim: are you mad at that captain for making that decision to go

>> i have been out in a dozen hurricanes. just a tropical storm, and we can make it. jim: she is preparing a sendoff for her middle daughter, who she describes as rebellious and unique. >> she was married to the sea, she said. everyone asked her, you' re 51. why aren' t you married with kids? "i' m married to the sea." jim: she hopes other companies will take the weather into consideration in the future. as for the investigation, the focus turns to the data encoder, on the ship which lies on the ocean floor. jim lokay, wcvb newscenter five. reid: to mashpee, where several boats docked caught fire. at least two were destroyed. investigators are working to figure out what sparked the flames. newscenter 5' s rhondella richardson is live in mashpee

rhondella: the fuel tank is intact, but not much else. now that the boats have been holding to the little river boatyard, the investigation continues into what caused the fire. >> it was all black smoke. >> it was really upsetting to watch. rhondella: fire broke out just after 11:30 a.m. sunday, and engulfed two boats tied to docks on mashpee' s little river. a 31 foot hydrosport caught fire first, according to firefighters. the boat owner' s home is right near his dock, and he' s well-known in the area. >> kris bohnenberger is a retired state cop here in massaschusetts. rhondella: firefighters had a hard time getting to the fire. driveway access along riverside road was too narrow. >> just real difficulty we had trying to locate where the fire was. we had to try to leapfrog through the houses on the waterside to get them on there. rhondella: the burning dock, another problem. >> there was a composite dock.

and we couldn' dock. we had to use a narrow dock alongside to get the water out of the boat without falling in. rhondella: the wind fanned the away, on fire. residents written -- report another bout has damage. >> this is as bad as it gets. once these things get going, it is hard to put them out. rhondella: at this point, the fire does not appear to be sufficient -- suspicious. river was clear up. jim: -- reid: the hamilton man shot and killed by beverly police has been identified. the essex county d.a. confirms 49-year-old christopher whitmarsh died, after an altercation with police on balch street in beverly saturday afternoon. police say the suspect drove his vehicle into a toyota highlander and two police cruisers.

lebanon hall. the state fire marshal says someone who should not have been inside the vacant building ignited the fire. the building will be torn down. a boston man is being held on $25,000 bail tonight, after a fatal crash in weymouth. the single car crash happened just before midnight, on middle street. police say the vehicle hit a utility pole. three passengers were taken to south shore hospital. a 29-year-old boston man did not survive. the driver, 30-year-old francisco gomes of boston, was arrested, and charged with motor vehicle homicide. new at 11:00, curtain call at the historic colonial theatre. tonight' s performance of book of mormon, possibly the last show for some time. emerson college now looking to transform the theatre, and that' s not going over so well. our frank holland is live in boston tonight. he has more reaction. frank? frank: many people are saying they saved their playbills from the final show.

they are worried that when and if the colonial reopens, it will the longer feature major productions like it has been the past 115 years. these theater-goers, leaving the final performance of "the book of mormon" tonight, could be the last to enjoy the colonial theater as you see it here. >> it' s the end of an era frank: curtis nagle and his family bought tickets to enjoy the show, and the historic venue. >> the architecture is just beautiful. the show is great. lots of laughs. it was funny. frank: this is what the colonial looked like when it celebrated its 100th anniversary. the chronicle cameras, capturing the ornate design and opulent fixtures of the theater, that has operated continuously since 1900. s like ripping down a church when it' s something like this. so much life. frank: emerson college, the owner of the colonial, says it needs major renovations. the plans are to close for about a year. when it reopens, emerson considering turning the colonial into a welcome center or maybe even a dining hall, with a performance space. >> very disappointing. many people here at emerson are upset to hear that' s it' s

frank: john wyand majors in stage and production management at emerson. >> many of us are upset to hear the school is thinking of changing it into something like a dining hall. just because we care so much about the arts. and to change such a historic building into something like that is disappointing. frank: emerson releasing this statement, promising tonight will not be the final curtain for the colonial. "the college is engaged in a thorough, thoughtful process to explore and examine a number of options for the theater' s potential long-term use, all of which will include future performances." some good news tonight, emerson says there is one plan that would have the colonial reopened in less than a year. hundreds of thousands of dollars in renovations and maintenance need to be done. in the theater district, frank holland, wcvb newscenter 5. reid: hundreds of flights delayed at southwest. passengers left waiting. the airline is dealing with issues and travelers are being

tonight, a travel nightmare for thousands. southwest airlines grapples with a computer glitch. lines out to the curb in las vegas in denver. tents set up to shield passengers from the heat in las vegas. southwest blamed a technology issue affecting its reservation centers and airports. >> get here in our prior and it is good. but sometimes, murphy' s law hits you. reid: southwest has begun manually issuing boarding passes. by midmorning, a tweet said southwest apologized or the issues, saying 150 flights were affected. >> they took mining down on a piece of paper, which made me feel a bit uneasy. reid: employees handed out water to frustrated passengers. by 1:30, the number of flights affected jumped to 450.

as our frank holland reports, a tow-truck driver took quick action to help. s, like, right out of a movie. a car come straight through the wall. pieces go everywhere. it was just chaos. frank: sam cerulo, just feet away when a man lost control of a bmw suv at the adesa auto auction house in framingham. >> i saw it come straight t know what' s going on. i just see the bmw, and people are screaming and yelling. they thought the car was going to blow up at frank: the bizarre first. crash happening on friday morning. >> still shaken about it. frank: cerulo works as tow truck driver. he moves disabled cars through one of the many busy auction lines. >> it' s usually just mayhem, they are pumping cars in and out there and get them sold frank: the crash, taking cars to a different level. one man was pinned under the suv. >> i just kind of went, what do i do? what do i do? for a second.

that is why things will be warming up nicely. this storm system to the south, once again, the carolinas over the weekend, 3-6 inches of rain. eventually, on tuesday, this wants to slide up the coast. a bit of rain on tuesday. right now, nothing. not a cloud in the sky. tomorrow, it will be that way all day. late in the day there maybe clouds, but otherwise, a sunny day. tonight, 42-52 overnight. tomorrow, sunny, warm, 72-78. a couple spots may be close to 80 tomorrow. we will keep an eye on that. highs will look like this tomorrow. a southwesterly breeze will be at nice and warm . towards worcester, high 73. things will change. we have a chance of showers on tuesday. look what happens to the temperature wednesday. it drops dramatically. that is the beginning of the

the south shore, mostly 70' s. but it is a southwesterly breeze. towards buzzard bay and the cooler. towards quincy, 75. upper 60' off the water. a delightful day. the storm system i showed you down the coast slid its way up, it is not very organized and staying offshore. it may throw clouds at us and maybe a scattered shower or two in the morning. primarily in the eastern part of the state. a secondary patch of rain to the west will come in tuesday afternoon. tuesday, two chances of rain. neither is terribly impressive. if they get together, we are talking about substantial rain. right now, it looks like they will stay far out. not a big issue. here comes the wave of cool air behind the cold front that will skip -- that will carry us through the weekend. warm temperatures are to the west. let' s break it all down.

tomorrow, it is nice in the morning, nice all day long. tuesday, showers coming in. you can see from this satellite computer model, it will not be terribly widespread. 8:00 a.m., scattered showers. it is with us most of the day. maybe a hint of sunshine mixed in. then, it is out of here on tuesday. on wednesday, we see the cold front come through. we go from a it warm pattern to a cool pattern across the area. that is why the rest of the week, you see temperatures in the 50' s and 60' s. clearing skies headed towards the weekend. breezy conditions, they don' t like to see that along the river. it will be clearing off and we will see clearing skies. otherwise, the other thing you' ll notice is, the chance of showers on friday, there could be wet snowflakes northwest of the city. it will be that cold. it will carry through the weekend, then we will warm up.

the astros are one win away from the american league championship series. they got a two-run single like castro to take a 2-1 league -- a lead over the royals. this picture has not lost a game at home. 15-0 as the astros win this baby, 4-2 the final. a busy day on the dallas-fort worth area after that cowboys game ended. the rangers hosted the blue jays. a three-run homer made it enough to keep them alive. they are trying to stay alive. blue jays win it, 5-1. i don' t know if you saw this slide, but it broke the leg, a bush league sack. they have suspended chase udley for two games. he is appealing. that is ugly. broken leg, done for the season.

reid: another big weekend for matt damon, as "the martian" takes number one for the second week in a row at the box office. the sci-fi film brought in a strong $37 million, exceeding industry expectations. is warner brothers' "pan," a "peter pan" prequel that failed to fly. it flopped at the box office. starring hugh jackman and rooney mara, "pan" grossed just over $15.5 million since friday. compared to the $150 million production cost, "pan" got the hook this opening weekend. we will see what happens in the next few weekends. mike: tomorrow is another beautiful day. temperatures in the reid: the 70' s.
