if you do, you need to take advantage of it. it is going to be absolutely beautiful today. really, really nice. sunshine and temperatures going to be above our average which is 63 for this time of year. average low is 48. notice in boston, we're 52 right now but it is quite a bit cooler in the suburbs. as chilly as 38 in norwood right now. notice worcester is 52. we've got the mid 40's bedford to fitchburg. nashua 46 degrees if you're heading out the door this morning. a little patch or two of fog especially out in the western half of the state. not a big issue out there. you can see vis ibilityd around keene is running about a half a mile. otherwise above any fog skies are clear. we are going to enjoy tons of sunshine today as high pressure to our south gives us a mild southwesterly wind flow. so temperatures come up quickly this morning under lots of sunshine. notice by 9:00 a.m. we're in the upper 50's, close to 60 degrees. by lunchtime, it's close to 70. we'll sneak up into the 70's this afternoon with lots of sunshine going for a high of 75 boston, 7 in worcester. as warm as 77 nashua to lawrence.

notice our cool spot today with that wind off the water. upper 60's to near 70 on cape cod. but that too really really nice weatherwise. let's get you out to the roads this morning. my guess is a lot of folks have the day off. good morning. olessa: that's what it's looking like. the pike by allston/brighton no problems. both directions quiet. let's get over to the maps and check the rest of the ride which looks great this morning. no construction to contend with because of the holiday. getting into boston problem-free ride for you right now south of town. same story looking good on route 3, 24, 95 is issue. nice and quiet ride as well on the pike and route 9 for you. if you're heading north of town that's a problem-free start as well. trains and buses are expected to start the morning on schedule. the 10k is today. expect closures. randy: thank you. right now this overnight car fire is under investigation.

the car burst into flames on 93 north on the ramp to route 16 in boston. everyone got out okay. it's not clear how the flames started. the ramp was briefly closed, but the scene is now clear. right now we are waiting for final word on a huge merger that will have a big impact on a local company. emily: the eye's jim lokay is live in hopkinton with the details we're learning overnight. jim: emily, the markets will be open today on columbus day but before that at 7:00 a.m. we're expecting to hear about a merger between e.m.c. and dell computer. that's expected later on today. that deal reportedly worth more than $53 billion. e.m.c. is the biggest technology company in massachusetts. 9,700 people work for the company statewide. neither company is talking about the deal yet. but it would create a super company worth an estimated $75 billion. as with all of these kinds of deals, there are certainly concerns about layoffs. there are no specifics on that

at this point. again, we are hoping to learn more as that deal is expected to become official at 7:00 a.m. a lot of people are asking why? dell makes computers and e.m.c. specializes in cloud computing which is what a lot of the tech companies are moving towards. live in hopkinton, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: breaking overnight. five nato troops are dead after a helicopter crash in afghanistan. a security guard says the chopper appeared to hit the cable of an observation balloon before it crashed landed at nato headquarters in kabul. british military officials say two of those killed were members of the royal air force. the other casualties have not been identified. breaking right now a "washington post" journalist detained in iran for more than a year has just been convicted of espionage. jason razian reportedly faces 10-20 years in prison, a judiciary spokesman says he'll

days. right now investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that set several boats ablaze. at least two boats destroyed on mashpee's little river. smoke started rising off one boat yesterday morning, and it didn't take long for the fire to spread. firefighters had a hard time getting to the fire. driveway access along riverside road too narrow. the burning docks also made it tough for firefighters to reach the flames. >> pretty bad. about as bad as it gets. once these things get going it's emily: firefighters believe the fire was an accident. no one was hurt. randy: right now a man is in critical condition after he was texas. police say it happened during a parking lot outside the cowboys stadium. the suspect was also hurt while attempting to get away. he's charged with assault with a deadly weapon. the shooting happened about 90

minutes after the game ended, but many fans were still in the parking lot. the names of those involved and where they're from hasn't been released. as for the game, no problem for the pats. this was just one of the highlights. running back dion lewis dodging and weaving and getting it done. 30-6 the final. tom brady feeling pretty good. tom brady: they've got a good defense so it was a big win for us. going on the road is is never easy. you know, certainly they got two of their key guys back. they're a good team. i'm glad we got the win. randy: those injuries brady mentioned-- early in the first quarter with a rib injury. nate solder left with an elbow emily: a trespasser may be to blame for a massive fire at an abandoned club in quincy. a.m. sunday at the old sons of lebanon hall. the state fire marshal says inside the vacant building ignited the fire.

the head of auburn's housing authority is calling for changes in the law after the death of a child in a foster home. two-year-old ava conway-coxon died in a subsidized housing development two months ago. auburn officials have said they did not know one of the units was being used as a foster home. the chairman tells "the telegram" there should be a law requiring d.c.f. to notify housing authorities when foster homes are in their complexes. the hamilton man shot and killed by beverly police has now been identified. the essex county d.a. confirms christopher whitmarsh died after a confrontation with police in beverly saturday afternoon. police say he drove his vehicle into a toyota highlander and two police cruisers. the d.a. would only say whitmarsh knew one of the occupants inside that highlander. randy: boston's mayor says he still wants to talk even though the city is suing the company behind a planned casino in everett. wynn executives have said they're frustrated by walsh's legal maneuvers. but the mayor tells "the herald"

he's just trying to protect neighboring communities that would be impacted by the casino resort. wynn filed a counter-suit last week accusing unnamed defendants of defaming the company. commitment 2016. president obama says hillary clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state was a mistake. but he also said she did not damage national security. in an interview with "60 minutes," the president said all public officials must be more sensitive about how they handle information and personal data. how that controversy will figure in to tomorrow night's first democratic debate remains to be seen. five candidates will be on the stage. but there's another big question mark this morning. the eye's erika tarantal is following developments. erika: that question-- whether vice president joe biden will finally enter the race. he met with family in delaware over the weekend to weigh the decision. cnn is hosting tomorrow night's debate and says they'll happily

tomorrow still a warm day. lots of lower 70's out there. but again we're talking about more clouds tomorrow and just a couple of showers moving on in. it's really our best chance of seeing showers in the next few days. during the morning hours, i think the best chance is here in southeastern massachusetts. then we'll watch that cold front approach from the west. but as it does so, a lot of the shower activity is drying up. we're not talking about widespread rain. just the threat of a shower moving through during the afternoon. and then the skies clear out. back to sunshine on wednesday but it will be cooler. and then lots of sunshine on thursday but only around 60 degrees. a more potent front is coming in on friday. with that showers around and behind it likely the coldest air we have seen in the season so far. with that frost is likely by sunday morning and high temperatures on sunday likely not even touching 50 degrees so much colder air is working in. olessa: i'm not ready to hear frost. cindy: but today will be so beautiful. olessa: we should focus on that. i'll do it every second. thank you, cindy. morning.

jim: are you mad at that captain for making the decision to go out to sea? >> no. in marine time you've been out in a dozen hurricanes. and this is just a tropical storm. "we can make it." randy: the ntsb is still working to find the data recorder from the "el faro," believed to be with the sunken vessel. a rhode island native is recovering after loosing his leg in a shark attack. colin cook was surfing in hawaii friday when he was pulled off his board. beachgoers rushed into the water, made a tourniquet from a surfboard leash, and saved his life. cook moved to hawaii three years ago to build surfboards. cook's friends say he has a long recovery ahead. emily: economic headlines this monday morning. asian markets were higher overnight ahead of new trade data from china. right now u.s. stock futures are

it is a busy hour for passengers to start arriving right now. but it looks like people are getting on their planes or getting their boarding passes but nonetheless after major technical problems yesterday, the airline is is warning that you need to plan ahead. get here early. if you can, print your boarding pass if you are traveling today. here's what happened. the airlines' web site mobile app reservation centers and really airport terminals were in chaos all across the country yesterday. hundreds of flights and tens of thousands of passengers were put on hold. many of them unable to board their flights. ticket agents were forced to issue hand-written boarding passes. passengers we talked to here at logan this morning say they wish the airline would have told them before they got here to the airport. >> they should have notified us. they do have a way to notify us. right? email. phone, text. message. that's it.

antoinette: southwest says it doesn't know what caused the problem or when everything will be completely fixed. and while everything is still running smoothly here at logan airport this morning, you are still advised to get here early if you can. two hours early. and if at all possible, print that boarding pass before you leave your house. we're live at logan airport this antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: antoinette, thank you. right now a scary scene for passengers in las vegas is under an allegiant air plane engine caught fire sunday as it was getting ready to take off. passengers say the pilot was forced to slam on the brakes before fire trucks swarmed the plane. no one was hurt. a new hampshire woman is facing drugged driving charges after allegedly slamming into a police cruiser. state police say this is what the cruiser looked like after sunday's crash on i-93 in thornton. the trooper inside the cruiser was conducting a traffic stop at the time. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. katherine dangelo was arrested at the scene.

on $25,000 bail after a deadly crash in weymouth. the single car crash happened just before midnight saturday on middle street. police say the vehicle hit a utility pole. three passengers were taken to south shore hospital. an unidentified 29-year-old boston man did not survive. the driver, 30-year-old francisco gomes of boston, was arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide. it could be the end of an era for boston's historic colonial theatre. emerson college says the theater needs major renovations which will take about a year. when it reopens, the college says it may turn it into a welcome center or even a dining hall with performance space, but that's not going over so well with some theatergoers and students. >> very disappointing. many people here at emerson are very upset to hear that it's closing with an indefinite future. >> so much life. randy: emerson releasing a statement saying that it is exploring a number of options

on the cooler side. temperatures are running 52 in worcester. we've got some mid 40's nashua to bedford. cool pocket around norwood at 38 degrees. boston is 52. by the time you get down to the cape, it's in the lower 50's this morning. winds today are going to be out of the southwest. and so the cape is going to be the one spot that gets pretty close this afternoon to that 70-degree mark but probably doesn't quite get there. mostly in the upper 60's for highs today on the cape. we're talking about tons of sunshine for everyone today and high temperatures range between about 70 and 77 degrees. elsewhere i think we have mid 70's today in boston with those light winds, blue sky and a really delightful day on tap. things will change tomorrow. we've got a system that is off shore of the carolinas right now. it will be cruising by us first thing tomorrow morning. that will bring in a few showers to southeastern massachusetts for the morning commute. also notice the front off to the west. this will approach during the afternoon but a lot of the shower activity kind of falls apart. there may be a passing shower during the afternoon and evening hours. behind that front, we open the door for some cooler

emily: thank you. breaking overnight. five nato troops are dead after a helicopter crash in afghanistan. a security guard says the chopper appeared to hit the cable of an observation balloon in kabul. two members of the royal air force are dead. the other casualties have not been identified. also breaking a "washington post" journalist detained in iran for more than a year has just been convicted of espionage. jason rezaian reportedly faces 10 to 20 years in prison. a judiciary spokesman says rezaian will be eligible to appeal in 20 days. randy: the official announcement of a mega merger with huge implications for a local company is expected this morning. emily: the eye's jim lokay is live in hopkinton with new information developing overnight. jim? jim: emily, e.m.c. has called hopkinton home for years but rumors of a merger with dell computer from swirled around for weeks. today it looks like a mesh will become a reality.

it's the largest tech company in massachusetts with nearly 10,000 employees in bay state. we know dell is a personal computer maker but e.m.c. could give us a huge foothold in the growing cloud computerring sector. how this deal could affect the overall work force is still unknown and its future in hopkinton is still up in the air. this is all still speculation by way of several sources. we expect to have an official announcement later today sometime around 7:00 a.m. live in hopkinton i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: a warning for anyone the airline is asking that you get to the airport two hours early and print out that you get here. there is a major computer meltdown yesterday affecting the airlines' web site mobile app, reservation centers and airport terminals all across the country. hundreds of flights and tens of thousands of passengers were put on hold, many unable to board their flights. in some cases ticket agents were even forced to issue

hand-written boarding passes. southwest says it still doesn't know what exactly caused this computer glitch. and it doesn't know exactly when everything will be fixed. we're live at logan airport this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: as the democratic candidates for president prep for their first debate, vice president joe biden is still weighing whether he'll enter the race. >> get outta my way, will ya? erika: in delaware over the weekend, the v.p. stayed silent as he met with family to make a final decision. meantime, while cnn says they'd add him at the last minute, at this point five democrats will take the stage tomorrow night for the first of six democratic debates. frontrunner hillary clinton will look to solidify her lead which has been weakening. for the first time she'll be forced to directly take on her closest rival, vermont senator bernie sanders. emily: right now this overnight car fire is under investigation. the car burst into flames on 93 north on the ramp to route 16 in boston. everyone got out okay. it's not clear how the flames started.

the ramp was briefly closedbut the scene is now clear. randy: right now investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that set several boats ablaze. at least two boats destroyed on mashpee's little river. smoke started rising off one boat yesterday morning, and it didn't take long for the fire to spread. firefighters believe the fire was an accident. no one was hurt. emily: the hamilton man shot and killed by beverly police has been identified. the essex county d.a. confirms christopher whitmarsh died after an confrontation with police in beverly saturday afternoon. police say he drove his vehicle into a toyota highlander and two police cruisers. the d.a. would only say whitmarsh knew one of the occupants inside that highlander. a woman accused of trying to kidnap a teenager in connecticut is behind bars, 38-year-old towanna randall was arrested this weekend. police say she offered a ride to a 17-year-old girl and then assaulted her in the car, the teen jumped out of the moving car to make her escape.

tomorrow in court. randy: the supreme court is expected to announce if it will hear a challenge to an assault weapons ban. that decision could be issued as soon as tomorrow. gun advocates are fighting the ban in highland park, illinois, which prohibits the sale, purchase, or possession of semi-automatic weapons that can hold more than 10 rounds in a single ammunition clip or magazine. the ban also lists specific assault rifles. police in tennessee make an arrest in the shooting death of an off-duty police officer, the officer was gunned down in a home in cordova yesterday morning. police say "details are sketchy." the 31-year-old police officer leaves behind a fiancee who's four months pregnant. emily: new york city police are investigating an attack on two israeli rabbinical students as a possible hate crime. the students were on west 39th street in midtown when someone threw a molotov cocktail at them. the pair is spending a year studying at brooklyn yeshiva and

manhattan. the students were not hurt. the patriots continue their winning ways handily beating the cowboys. this was just one of the highlights. runningback dion lewis dodging and weaving and getting it done. 30-6 the final. dont'a hightower left the game early in the first quarter with a rib injury. nate solder suffered an elbow injury. it's the crazy play a lot of people are still talking about this morning. l.a. dodgers infielder chase utley has a nasty collision with the mets ruben tejada who leaves the game with a broken leg. the league says the slide was illegal and utley has been suspended for games 3 and 4 of the national league division series. utley will appeal the suspension. randy: thousands of runners hit the road for the boston athletic associations half marathon. it was a gorgeous day for the 13.1-mile race around the emerald necklace. the annual event also marks the
