cindy: good to see you. welcome back. randy: thank you. got back to perfect weather. cindy: you did. olessa: he timed it right, didn't he? cindy: the past few days have been really nice. hopefully you get to enjoy today because it will be nicer. you'll notice how dark it is. have you noticed our sunrises? they keep getting later and later. the sunrise is at 6:5. by the end of the month on halloween, the sun is up at 7:16. then we turn the clocks back o halloween night. by november 1, that sunday the sun will be up an hour earlier at 6:17. a sign of the times for sure. cool this morning. outside the city, you can see there are a lot of 40's showing up on the north shore. beverly is at 47. boston 52. worcester is 49. notice we dipped into the upper 0's around norwood. lower 50's this morning on cape cod. a can couple of patches of fog this morning. these are few and far between. they will burn off pretty quickly. you may encounter a touch of fog here and there this morning. above that skies are clear so another day with sunshine kind

significantly this afternoon. lower 70's here. boston up to beverly. as warm as 77 burlington, waltham back to framingham. and the temperatures come up pretty quickly this morning. notice by late morning it's in the upper 60's. we spend most of the afternoon in the 70's. talking about high temperatures out in worcester county today in the mid 70's as well. perhaps as warm as about 78 in fitchburg. mid 70's brockton to bridgewater. that southwesterly wind will keep us a little closer to 70 degrees on cape cod but a beautiful day for sure. feeling more like labor day than columbus day. let's get you out to the roads this morning. a lot of people have the day off. olessa: that's what it looks like. a live look at the pike by allston/brighton. problem-free eastbound moving away. let's get to the maps and check travel times. as you travel south of town, 24 looks good. route 3 no problems. 95 as well. your trip on the expressway ten minutes braintree to boston. no problems along the pike this morning. 15-minute ride 495 out to 128. and then as you head in order 93 southbound is a quiet start out

stays nice and light down to boston. we are watching one crash here. 128 south by route 1a. trains and buses are running on schedule. and the annual tufts health plan 10k for women is today. you're looking live at boston common where the race will start. during the race, expect closures on the mass ave bridge, parts of memorial drive, reid overpass, parts of arlington street, and the arlington street exit from the storrow drive tunnel. randy? randy: thank you. right now this overnight car fire is under investigation. the car burst into flames on 93 north on the ramp to route 16 in boston. everyone got out okay. it's not clear how the flames started. the ramp was briefly closed, but the scene is now clear. right now we are waiting for final word on a huge merger that will have a big impact on a local company. emily: the eye's jim lokay is live in hopkinton with the details we're learning overnight. jim? jim: reports from all street say the deal could be announced around 7:00 this morning.

e.m.c. along with dell computer. that deal could be a big one. they're estimating more than $53 billion. e.m.c. is the biggest technology company in massachusetts with 9 montreal expo 700 people working state. the deal yet. but it would create a super company worth an estimated $75 billion. as with all of these kinds of deals, there are certainly concerns about layoffs. will there be any? we don't know that because there are no specifics on that at this point. again, we are hoping to learn more as that deal is expected to become official at 7:00 a.m. we will keep you posted. for now live in hopkinton, i'm jim lokay, wcvb. emily: breaking overnight. five nato troops are dead after a helicopter crash in afghanistan. a security guard says the chopper appeared to hit the cable of an observation balloon before it crashed landed at nato headquarters in kabul. british military officials say two of those killed were members of the royal air force. the other casualties have not

also breaking right now. a "washington post" journalist detained in iran for more than a year has just been convicted of espionage. jason rezaian reportedly faces 10 to 20 years in prison. a judiciary spokesman says rezaian will be eligible to appeal in 20 days. right now investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that set several boats ablaze. at least two boats destroyed on mashpee's little river. smoke started rising off one boat yesterday morning, and it didn't take long for the fire to spread. firefighters had a hard time getting to the fire. driveway access along riverside road too narrow. the burning docks also made it tough for firefighters to reach the flames. >> pretty bad. about as bad as it gets. once these things get going, it's really hard to put them out. emily: firefighters believe the fire was an accident. no one was hurt. randy: right now a man is in critical condition after he was shot after the patriots game in texas. police say it happened during a

fight at a tailgating party in a parking lot outside the cowboys stadium. the suspect was also hurt while he's charged with assault with a the shooting happened about 90 minutes after the game ended, but many fans were still in the parking lot. where they're from hasn't been as for the game, no problem for the pats. highlights. running back dion lewis dodging and weaving and getting it done. 30-6 the final. tom brady feeling pretty good. tom brady: they've got a good defense so it was a big win for us. going on the road is is never easy. you know, certainly they got two of their key guys back. they're a good team. we had some injuries so i'm glad we got the win. randy: those injuries brady mentioned-- dont'a hightower left the game early in the first quarter with a rib injury. nate solder left with an elbow injury. emily: new this morning. the head of auburn's housing

authority is calling for changes in the law after the death of a child in a foster home. two-year-old ava conway-coxon died in a subsidized housing development two months ago. auburn officials have said they did not know one of the units was being used as a foster home. the chairman tells "the telegram" there should be a law requiring d.c.f. to notify housing authorities when foster homes are in their complexes. the hamilton man shot and killed by beverly police has now been identified. the essex county d.a. confirms christopher whitmarsh died after a confrontation with police in beverly saturday afternoon. police say he drove his vehicle into a toyota highlander and two police cruisers. the d.a. would only say whitmarsh knew one of the occupants inside that highlander. randy: boston's mayor says he still wants to talk even though the city is suing the company behind a planned casino in everett. wynn executives have said they're frustrated by walsh's legal maneuvers. but the mayor tells "the herald" he's just trying to protect neighboring communities that would be impacted by the casino resort.

wynn filed a counter-suit last week accusing unnamed defendants of defaming the company. commitment 2016. president obama says hillary clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state was a mistake. she has admitted that. but he also said she did not damage national security. in an interview with "60 minutes," the president said all public officials must be more sensitive about how they handle information and personal data. how that controversy will figure in to tomorrow night's first democratic debate remains to be seen. five candidates will be on the stage. but there's another big question mark this morning. the eye's erika tarantal is following developments. erika: that question-- whether vice president joe biden will finally enter the race. he met with family in delaware over the weekend to weigh the decision. cnn is hosting tomorrow night's debate and says they'll happily add a podium for the v.p. should he choose to take part but that's not expected. front and center will be former secretary of state hillary clinton. she'll try to win back support

from independent voters and she'll be, for the first time, forced to directly take on her closest rival, vermont senator bernie sanders. as for biden, an announcement is expected any day. >> he wants to be president. he would think he would be a better president than hillary clinton. i still think the personal is weighing on him quite, quite a bit. that, to me, in the end will be the deciding factor. erika: tomorrow's debate is the first of six for the democrats. five candidates are in. looking to steal some of the spotlight from clinton and sanders are three former governors-- martin o'malley, lincoln chafee, and jim webb. all trailing by far, they have little to lose by attacking the frontrunners. emily: erika, thanks. the mother of a massachusetts native lost at sea on a cargo ship says she is not angry. randy: why she says she understands the captain's decision to set sail. and a new england native injured in a shark attack in hawaii. how strangers saved his life with part of a surfboard. emily: new this morning. fall beers are just one pit-fall

cindy: but it's beautiful today. olessa: yes! cindy: this is why we need to enjoy today. yes, we are. columbus day will be fantastic. just beautiful once again. shower. and then we're talking about that much colder weather getting in here by the upcoming weekend. it's all in the jetstream which is running from west to east across the country. right now we call that zonal. no real temperature extremes. we're kind of warm for this time of year but look what happens as we get toward the end of this weekend. the jetstream will be dive to go the south and cooler air will work on in here. wait until you see that search-day forecast. really cooling down by the weekend. right now though we have cool pockets. on the north shore beverly is 47. boston 52 right now. worcester has dipped into the upper 40's. 45 in nashua. 36 one of those cold pockets around norwood. 46 in taunton. we're running closer to 50 degrees on cape cod this morning. you can see where we have the white showing up. this is where we've got fog reducing visibility in some

areas. down to a half a mile in keene. not widespread. it will burn off pretty quickly. above any fog the skies are clear. we have tons of sunshine in store for today. i want you to notice a spin off the clouds. 's an area of low pressure that is going to lift north ward and brush by us early tomorrow. and then by the second half of the day this cold front is going to be approaching from the west. so those features squeezing in on us. we'll see more clouds tomorrow. high pressure today though giving us tons of sunshine so enjoy it. notice throughout the day loads of sunshine. by noontime it's up around 70 degrees. with that southwesterly wind keeping us close to 70 for a high temperature on cape cod. but look at taunton 74. boston 75. worcester 74. we're going for the mid 70's nashua to lawrence. an average high this time of year is 63. so about 10 degrees easily above average today. clouds begin to move in overnight. by tomorrow morning a lot of clouds. maybe one or two sprinkles around. overnight low temperatures in the 40's and 50's tonight. not as cool as it is is this

morning. tomorrow is still mild day despite the clouds and, yes, that risk for a shower. so they've got the chance of a couple showers in the forecast tomorrow. and then we're drying it out wednesday into thursday and really cooling it down. in terms of the shower activity tomorrow, take a look. first thing in the morning southeastern massachusetts. you may see a shower move on through. then we'll watch that front approach from the west. we'll have the shower activity drying up as it approaches so not everybody is going to see a shower tomorrow. they will be few and far between but that risk is with us. behind that cool front we're cooling it down wednesday into thursday but a more potent front comes in on friday. this is the one that is likely going to bring the coldest air of the season. and by sunday morning, yes, frost is likely. with a high temperature in the upper 40's. some spots in the upper 40's out there right now. big changes coming by the weekend. olessa: love you but i'm not going to pay attention to that. just focusing on today. it's a little bit busy here. watching this one crash early this morning. this is the only trouble spot because sit is a holiday. we're not seeing so much volume.

this is beverly. sky 5 over the scene for us. 128 right over by route 1a. the southbound side, you can see there are two lanes blocked. the right lane and the left lane because of some debris. only the center lane is squeezing through. on the northbound side the left lane is also closed at this point. just expect those delays. we'll keep you post od that. let's check out the rest of the ride once again there is that accident that you just saw live. 128 south by route 1a. besides that you're in great shape. eastbound on the pike 15 minutes 495 to 128. no delays south of town. expressway 10 minutes braintree to boston. trains and buses on schedule. randy. randy: thank you. this morning the mother of a massachusetts native lost at sea is sharing her pain and her grief. mariette wright grew up in assonnet. she was serving on the "el faro" when it went down in the choppy waters stirred by hurricane joaquin. her mother tells newscenter 5's jim lokay she's not angry but she does have questions. >> i believe if there was any way they could have prevented

but the captain chose to ship out in that tropical storm. jim: are you mad at that captain for making the decision to go out to sea? >> no. in marine time you've been out in a dozen hurricanes. and this is just a tropical storm. "we can make it." randy: the ntsb is still working to find the data recorder from the "el faro," believed to be with the sunken vessel. a rhode island native is recovering after loosing his leg in a shark attack. colin cook was surfing in hawaii friday when he was pulled off his board. beachgoers rushed into the water, made a tourniquet from a surfboard leash, and saved his life. cook moved to hawaii three years ago to build surfboards. cook's friends say he has a long recovery ahead. emily: economic headlines this monday morning. asian markets were higher overnight ahead of new trade data from china.

up but only slightly. wall street will be watching for reports on inflation and consumer spending this week. there will be no boost in benefits for people who collect social security. it's only the third time that's happened in the last 40 years. social security recipients, disabled veterans, and federal retirees usually see an average cost-of-living increase of four percent each year. but now lower gas prices mean lower inflation which is what the government uses to calculate any cost-of-living adjustments. randy: each season offers its own variety of culinary temptations. there are several in the fall that will derail your healthy eating plans, seasonal coffee beverages are often packed with flavor along with extra calories. but you can lighten it up. ask for a tall, with non-fat milk and no whip. it's tough not to crave warm comfort food when the fall chill hits. instead of butter and cream in

up. cindy: just starting. still have 23 minutes until the sun comes up, right? that camera is pointed right toward the horizon there. you can see it brightening up just a little bit. sunrise officially at 6:53 today. by the end of the month on halloween the sun is not up until 7:16 but then the next morning, daylight saving time is over. and the sun is up an hour earlier at 6:17. so don't forget a few weeks to go before we change those clocks. the temperature in beverly this morning is 47. 52 in boston. we're 49 in worcester. cool pockets out there. notice norwood is this the upper 30's. right around 50 the south coast, new bedford and on the cape this morning as well. and a few pockets of fog out there this morning. few and far between. visibility down to about a third of a mile in keene. otherwise skies above are clear. we have loads of sunshine in the forecast again today. it will be beautiful with sunshine all day long. temperatures coming up to around 70 by lunchtime today. look at these highs.

notice 77 lowell, waltham back to framingham. is 63. we're well above average today. mid to upper 70's out through worcester county. 76 in brockton. tawfnt onis 76 as well. with that southwesterly wind, a little bit cooler. right around 70 on the cape but here too it will be a beautiful day day. enjoy it. let's get you caught up on what's happening with that accident north of town. olessa: here's a live look from sky 5. this crash southbound side of 128 in beverly. you can see the right lane is blocked and the left lane is blocked. only the center lane is getting through right now. the good news it's a holiday so we're not seeing too much volume. shouldn't impact your commute too much. there are cars traveling on the northbound side looking at that accident. that also ended up in a fender bender to the left lane on the northbound side is also closed. i'll show you once again all this on the southbound side of 128 by route 1a in beverly. if you're heading that way give yourself a few extra minutes. besides that we're in pretty good shape. the pike only 15 minutes 495 out to 128. as you travel south of town

investigation. it happened on 93 north on the ramp to route 16 in boston. everyone got out okay, but it's not clear how the flames started. right now there are important warnings for anyone flying southwest airlines today. randy: the eye's antoinette antonio is live at logan airportwith what passengers need to know. antoinette: and randy, i've got to say that things have really slowed down since we last talked to you earlier this morning here at the ticket counter at southwest airlines. and there didn't appear to be any issues during that big rush that we saw. nonetheless, the airline is still asking people to plan ahead, get here early and print out your boarding pass if you can, if you are traveling today. the airline's web site, mobile app, reservation center and terminals were in chaos all across the country yesterday. hundreds of flights and tens of thousands of passengers were put on hold. many of them were unable to board their flights. ticket agents were forced to passes. passengers we talked to here at

the airline would have pulled them before any got here to the airport. >> they should have notified us. they do have a way to notify us, right? email, text, phone, nothing? not good. antoinette: southwest says it doesn't know what caused the problem or when everything will be completely fixed. once again, they are asking everyone to arrive two hours early and if at all possible to print out that boarding pass. once again there didn't seem to be any problems here. we did see people printing out their boarding passes themselves here at the kiosk. that is the latest live at logan airport this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. right now a scary scene for passengers in las vegas is under investigation. an allegiant air plane engine caught fire sunday as it was getting ready to take off. passengers say the pilot was forced to slam on the brakes before fire trucks swarmed the

no one was hurt. randy: a boston man being held on $25,000 bail after a deadly crash in weymouth. the single car crash happened just before midnight saturday on middle street. police say the vehicle hit a utility pole. three passengers were taken to south shore hospital. an unidentified 29-year-old boston man did not survive. the driver, 30-year-old francisco gomes of boston, was arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide. it could be the end of an era for boston's historic colonial theatre. the theater hosted its last performance last night for a while before major renovations happen there. when it reopens in about a year, emerson college said it may turn part of the facility into a dining hall with the performance space still being there. that's not going over so well students. many people here at emerson are very upset to hear that it's closing with an indefinite future.

washington, leads to a waterfall down the high school stadium steps. students arriving for the homecoming dance saturday night watched the water pool onto the field. fallen leaves covered several storm drains near the school, which caused the water to rise fast. field crews checked the stadium, and the damage is minimal. >> the car came straight through the wall. pieces went everywhere. it was just chaos. emily: this morning a tow truck driver recalling the chaos after a driver lost control of an s.u.v. at a crowded auto auction house in framingham. he was just feet away when the the car came straight through the wall. the whole scene caught on camera. sam cerulo says friday's crash was right out of a movie. he says he saw the panicked crowd try move out of the b.m.w.'s path. sam: the next thing i know people are yelling, "somebody is trapped under the car, somebody is trapped under the car." so i immediately just put the car down that was on my truck, drove over there as fast as i could, and lifted the b.m.w. up. emily: he managed to free the man who was pinned under the

just a few patches of fog this morning. enjoy a lot of sunshine today but it's a little cool to start this morning. if you're getting ready to head out the door notice lots of 30's orange to springfield. norwood 38 degrees. worcester 49. it is 52 in boston this morning. and notice your 12-hour forecast keeping that sunshine around all day long. in the lower 70's this afternoon. one spot that likely will not get in the 70's is cape cod. you're starting out in the lower 50's. notice we're holding it in the 60's with the sunshine this afternoon to near 70 degrees. that southwesterly wind is going to keep you a little bit cooler but up into the 70's we go. average high this time of year is 63. enjoy it. we won't have the sunny skies tomorrow. storm coming up from the south. it will pass by off shore. that could give you a shower in shoit eastern massachusetts in the morning. there might be one or two additional showers behind it. cooler air starts to settle in so despite the clouds tomorrow, we're still in the 70's. cooling off back into the mid 60's on wednesday.

not a lot of volume but a couple trouble spots. olessa: one north of town. this camera shot looks great. this is the expressway by the gas tank. we normally don't see it looking like this at this time of the morning. northbound side moving away with everyone getting by at the speed limit. we're watching one accident early this morning. 128 southbound at route 1a in beverly. this crash still has the left and right lanes closed. only the center lane is getting through but because it's a holiday we're not seeing too much volume there. once you get past that crash you're in good shape. no problems on the pipe. 15, 495 out to 128. you're looking great as you travel south of town along the expressway. you just saw it live 10 minutes braintree to boston. and the trains and buses are running on schedule. and the annual tufts health plan 10-k for women is today. you're looking live at boston common where the race will start. during the race, expect closures on the mass ave bridge, parts of memorial drive, reid overpass, parts of arlington street, and the arlington street exit from the storrow drive tunnel. emily? emily: olessa, thanks. breaking overnight. five nato troops are dead after a helicopter crash in

afghanistan. a security guard says the chopper appeared to hit the cable of an observation balloon in kabul. two members of the royal air force are dead. the other casualties have not been identified. also breaking a "washington post" journalist detained in iran for more than a year has just been convicted of espionage. jason rezaian reportedly faces 10 to 20 years in prison. a judiciary spokesman says rezaian will be eligible to appeal in 20 days. randy: the official announcement of a mega merger with huge implications for a local company emily: the eye's jim lokay is live in hopkinton with new information developing overnight. jim? jim: emily, e.m.c. has called hopkinton its home for years. now we're awaiting word that there may be a merger coming computer. the $53 billion deal is expected to be announced this morning. it's the largest tech company in massachusetts with nearly 10,000

we know dell is a computer maker but e.m.c. could give it a huge foothold in the cloud computing sector. how it could affect the work force and its future in hopkinton is still unknown. we expect to hear more when that deal is expected to be announced in just a few moments. live in hopkinton, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: a warning for today. if you are flying out the airline is asking that you get to the airport two hours early and, if possible, print out your here. all of this because of a major computer meltdown yesterday. this affected the airlines' mobile app, reservation center, web site and airport terminals all across the country. hundreds of nights and tens of thousands of passengers were put on hold, many of them unable to board their flights. in some cases ticket agents were forced to issue handwritten boarding passes. southwest says it does not know exactly what caused this computer glitch.

are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that set several boats ablaze. at least two boats destroyed on mashpee's little river. smoke started rising off one boat yesterday morning, and it didn't take long for the fire to spread. firefighters believe the fire was an accident. no one was hurt. emily: the hamilton man shot and killed by beverly police has been identified. the essex county d.a. confirms christopher whitmarsh died after a confrontation with police in beverly saturday afternoon. police say he drove his vehicle into a toyota highlander and two police cruisers. the d.a. would only say whitmarsh knew one of the occupants inside that highlander. a woman accused of trying to kidnap a teenager in connecticut towanna randall was arrested this weekend. a 17-year-old girl and then assaulted her in the car. the teen jumped out of the moving car to make her escape. randall will answer to charges tomorrow in court. randy: the supreme court is expected to announce if it will

weapons ban. that decision could be issued as soon as tomorrow. gun advocates are fighting the which prohibits the sale, purchase, or possession of semi-automatic weapons that can hold more than 10 rounds in a single ammunition clip or magazine. the ban also lists specific assault rifles. one person is in custody right now in connection with the shooting death of an off-duty police officer in tennessee. but investigators say details are still very unclear. the officer was gunned down in a home in cordova yesterday morning. he'd been on the force for just a little over a year and had a fiancee who is four months pregnant. emily: new york city police are investigating an attack on two israeli rabbinical students as a possible hate crime. the students were on west 39th street in midtown when someone threw a molotov cocktail at them. the pair is spending a year studying at brooklyn yeshiva and are often in the predominantly jewish neighborhood in manhattan. the students were not hurt.
