lightning with this cell here just south of the waters here. it looks as though this will be moving into new bedford within the next half an hour or so. not out of the question down this way. you get into a rumble of thunder. look at the temperatures. 50's to the lower 60's. 58 in boston right now so not nearly as chilly as the past few days. through 8:00 this morning, we're going to watch that area of rain continue to lift north ward. likely getting into boston by 8:00 a.m. and then it is scooting out just as quickly. so that by 11:00 this morning, most of the action is shifting off shore. we'll get a break around lunchtime through early afternoon. clouds with a few breaks of sunshine. front is approaching. this could give us an additional shower as we go through the evening hours. the wettest part of the day through about 10:00 a.m. clouds break for some sunshine as we get into the afternoon. and it's another mild day into the lower 70's we go but this is it. cooler air starts to work on in starting tomorrow. let's get you out to the roads right now. that weather could be slowing folks down to the south. olessa: it is rush hour. of course we have that volume all across the area north of

town as well. on the camera shot this is a live look at the zakim and leverett connector for you. let's check the rest of that ride. as you head south we're still watching that accident 24 northbound approaching 128. and delays are back into brockton with that crash. route 3 stop-and-go from weymouth to braintree. the ride on the expressway is 20 minutes braintree to boston. as you make your aalong the pike 15 minute ride 495 to 128. delays out of methuen down to das dascomb road. once again approaching spot pond. randy: breaking news. a close call for a woman driving on route 1 in saugus. a piece of scrap metal came flying off the truck in front of her and smashed right through her windshield this morning. luckily it hit the passenger side and no one was sitting in the passenger seat. an interview you'll see only on the "eyeopener" this morning, the driver says it was really a >> (inaudible). randy: state police are now

trying to track down the truck carrying that metal. we'll bring you more information as we get it here on the eye. emily: right now a firefighter is on leave accused of beating a man because he took too long to order his food. randy: the eyeopener's jim lokay is live in brookline with the alarming account from witnesses. jim: it all happened here at this popular establishment harvard avenue this morning. that firefighter is due in court this morning and facing some serious charges. police say it happened outside this restaurant on sunday night. a woman who witnessed the incident says it was horrifying that the firefighter was preferring to stay anonymous, quote, "it was like he was in a zone and wasn't going to stop. i was afraid he was going to kill him." a police report says 37-year-old joseph ward threw the man, who appeared to be homeless, to the ground, straddling him on the sidewalk as he repeatedly punched and kicked the 53-year-old. >> you hear that someone is an authority figure and beating up homeless people. i don't know.

it's not great to hear. jim: surveillance cameras could be key in this case. police say they clearly show the attack as it unfolded. this firefighter heads to court later on this morning. we will keep you updated as to what happens then. live this morning in brookline, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: five minutes after 6:00. breaking overnight. we are getting new details on the heroic final actions of two firefighters killed battling flames in missouri. the eye's erika tarantal is tracking developments as they come in. erika: those kansas city firefighters being called heroes this morning, as we now know from a burning apartment building before they were killed. the department chief says the building was engulfed in flames and already heavily damaged when crews arrived. a number of people inside had to the firefighters were clearing part of the structure where the roof had already partially collapsed when more came two were killed and two others were hurt.

they saved two civilians, carried them out of the second floor on ladders before the wall collapsed. erika: it's not clear how badly hurt the surviving firefighters are right now, and the identities of the men killed have yet to be released. the mayor of kansas city said overnight the tragedy is a reminder that firefighters put their lives on the line every day. it's not clear at this point randy: a judge will hear arguments today in the aaron hernandez double murder case. prosecutors are trying to get ahold of physical evidence involving a third party. the details of that evidence have not been released. hernandez is accused of killing two men in 2012 after an encounter at a boston nightclub. he is already serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder. emily: right now this quincy couple is preparing to face a judge accused in a gruesome killing on the south shore. the eye's sera congi is live at the courthouse in plymouth with the charges they're facing. sera: three people are now charged in this murder, and

over yet. the victim here robert mckenna was found dead on the kitchen floor of his damons point road home by a friend last month. police calling this a particularly grisly crime. on friday, quincy lawyer michael moscaritolo and his girlfriend lauren kalil were arrested in the case. moscaritolo facing a slew of charges including murder, burglary, and receiving stolen property. police also recovered five weapons stolen from the crime scene including an ak47 assault rifle. a third suspect james ferguson is already being held without bail in the case. during today's arraignment, we expect to learn new details about this case including some precious gems that may have been stolen as well from mckenna's home. again, prosecutors say that they are not finished here. they are looking for another suspect. live in plymouth, sera congi,

wcvb, newscenter 5. north attleboro is taking new action in response to campus shootings. 60 teachers and staff are now that put them in direct contact with first responders. the change follows a review of school safety procedures in the wake of the 2012 massacre in newtown, connecticut. "the sun chronicle" reports the the town's capital improvement plan. parents of students at nashua north high school will meet with school leaders this morning. the meeting comes after a book called "death notes" was found with the names of 17 students inside. the superintendent says the student behind the book will be disciplined. randy: the revere man who died after a weekend confrontation with police recently underwent a mental evaluation. "the herald" reports that happened last week, days before he's accused of breaking into an apartment building. a young child was with him and was eventually released. the man, whose name has not been released, was tased and died at the hospital. an autopsy will determine an

but the leading edge of the lighter rain getting closer to boston now. all the way up here toward bridgewater. even out toward mansfield we are looking at a few rain drops but the heavier stuff here is is to our south. where you see the yellows and the oranges these are downpours. these have been coming up and lightning. there have been thunderstorms in the waters to our south. they seem to be falling apart right now. not seeing any lightning but this heavier downpour it wouldn't shock me in there was a rumble of thunder associated with it moving into new bed nrd in the next 20 minutes. in the next 50 minutes reaching up toward you. heavier rain moving in to southeastern massachusetts now. look at the temperatures. lower 60's. southerly wind overnight. we've warmed it up. 58 boston. 5 in worcester. a few 40's back toward orange and keene. temperatures will climb slowly this morning. notice we have that threat for showers through about 10:00 a.m. and then we're drying it out at lunchtime with some breaks of sunshine this afternoon. we're going to head up into the 70's again this afternoon with that southerly wind. near 70 on the cape.

about 70 in worcester. so this is it for the mild weather because off to the west there's a cool front and once this crosses the area tonight and the winds shift to the west. it will tap into cooler air. the temperature trend is down each and every day starting during the day tomorrow. so along this frontal boundary, there are a few scattered showers. we'll watch that for this evening. in the meantime we have this low racing up from the south. this is producing the rain this morning. and this whole cluster of showers with some embedded downpour s is going to be moving into boston by 8:00 this morning and then notice it hugs mainly eastern massachusetts. by 11:00 this morning it's beginning to exit off shore. then we're drying it out. clouds, some breaks of sunshine through most of the afternoon. and then we'll watch that front evening. one or two showers may hold together and cross the area. midnight. thereafter, the front is gone. temperatures dropping into the 40's and 50s. tomorrow is a cooler day. we'll be in the 60's with a blend of clouds and sunshine. it looks like dry weather for us wednesday.

but notice it's getting even cooler near 60. on friday we're going to watch another front approach. this one likely going to bring in some showers during the afternoon and evening hours. not looking like an all-day rain or washout but behind that front, the coldest air of the season is moving on in. high temperatures on saturday with a gusty breeze. only in the lower 50's and by sunday, bright sunshine. not getting out of the 40's. we'll likely wake up to frost with the potential of a hard freeze by monday morning. olessa: are we saying good-bye to the 70's. cindy: i think we are. day. olessa: it's a quiet start out there this morning. building. here's route 1 in saugus. southbound move to go the bottom of the screen. volume. ride. south town 24 northbound still 128. you've got those heavy delays now all the way back into brockton approaching to crash. route stop-and-go out of weymouth. 95 days delays in canton if this morning. 25 minutes braintree to boston.

about 20, 495 out to 128. as you make your way south on 9 not too bad out of methuen but that volume really picks up near wilmington at 125 and stays heavy down to the leverett connector. trains and buses doing okay. em leem. emily: thank you. new this morning. two amateur hikers rescued from mt. washington might be footing the bill for their rescue. the men were stranded sunday with no food or water when they called for help. officials say it was snowing, and winds were gusting nearly 100 miles per hour. one of them had twisted his ankle. "the herald" reports if found negligent, they could be required to pay about $1,500. randy: this morning the u-conn student whose obscenity-laced tirade went viral is now issuing a new message. luke gatti is apologizing. by now, most people have seen the video of a drunk gatti demanding mac and cheese inside the university's student union. he yells at, swears at, and even

shoves a manager who wouldn't serve him because he was carrying an open beer. >> he was just doing his job. he gave me so many chances to walk away. no one should be treated that way like ever. randy: gatti posted that apology on youtube adding that anyone who wants to send him "mac and cheese" should just donate to a local food pantry. he could be expelled over the incident. an agreement has been reached between budweiser brewer, anheuser-busch, inbev, and s.a.b. miller. the "agreement in principal" creates the world's largest beer company. overnight, anheuser-busch said it increased its offer to more than $67 a share. randy: you've probably heard carrots are good for your eyes. emily: but there are other foods that can also help you maintain that great eyesight. first fatty fish like tuna. the omega-3's in them can nourish your retina and prevent the onset of eye diseases linked to aging.

injured. emily: right now a brookline firefighter is getting ready to face a judge. police say joseph ward savagely beat a man outside a mexican restaurant because he was taking too long to order. randy: right now final preparations are underway for the democrats' first presidential debate. five candidates will be taking part, but cnn is reserving a podium should vice president joe biden make a last-minute announcement. right now there are new questions after a missing woman is found stuffed in a crawl space in her own home. sue hutchinson disappeared three weeks ago. her roommate steven-and-raid week dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. police believe he killed hutchinson before taking off. family called police on sunday after noticing a strong odor in her home. they don't understand why police didn't catch it after searching the apartment several times.

police say the crawl space was walled off preventing them from discovering the body. emily: right now we are getting new information about a lowell police officer allegedly caught sleeping on the job. last week "the lowell sun" officer resting on a pillow this morning, the paper is time it's happened, and the officer has been disciplined before for sleeping on the job. a department statement calls the episode "extremely embarrassing" and is not representative of the lowell police force. 6:36 this morning. a family reunion in the office. randy: the moment two co-workers realized they were not just colleagues. and when other surgeons gave up on an infant, doctors in boston had hope. the closer look, that saved a little girl's life. emily: we continue to follow breaking news in saugus. a piece of scrap metal coming right through the windshield of this car on route 1. the driver was not hurt.

quincy, randolph even up to medfield this morning. look to the south. see the yellows and oranges. these are heavy downpours right now. moving up toward brockton over lakeville over new bedford. these continue to lift on toward the north so plymouth you're going to get in on this heavier rain. a few downpours east of hyannis now on the cape. look at the lightning strikes here in the waters to our south. these downpours that have made their way into southeastern massachusetts at one point did have some lightning associated with them. so i anticipate these will be weakening as they lift north ward but it is not out of the question that on the south coast, the cape, the islands you could even hear a rumble of thunder this morning. this is all associated with an area of low pressure that is morning. and then as we look into the afternoon, we're going to focus our attention on this frontal west. behind it, the temperatures really cool off. you can see 40's, even 30's showing up back here. and this is the cooler air that is going to start to step in. while. notice the high temperatures are trending downward. in fact below average by the end of the week.

driver and they're focusing their search in the everett area. live in saugus this morning, i'm reid lamberty, wcvb, newscenter 5. jim: brookline firefighter finds himself in hot water after an alleged incident at this talk owe restaurant in brookline. it goes back to an incident that happened on sunday night here on harvard avenue. 37-year-old joseph ward is accused of throwing a man who appeared to be homeless to the ground, straddling him on the sidewalk as he apparently punched and kicked the 53-year-old. this according-- this allegedly happened because the man too too long to order at the counter. ward goes before a judge here in brookline a little bit later on this morning. live in brookline this morning, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: breaking now we're learning about the heroic actions of two kansas city firefighters killed battling an apartment fire. the department chief says the men did not die in vaon, rescuing two people down ladders before going back into the building to clear it. the area they were working in last night had already partially

the building came crashing down. on top of them. two other firefighters were hurt but it's not clear how badly. a number of people in the building had to be helped to safety. the identities of the men killed have yet to be released. sera: we expect to learn more about a gruesome marshfield murder when a quincy couple is arraigned today here at plymouth district court. police say robert mckenna was found dead on his kitchen floor in his home on damons point road last month during a robbery. friday quincy lawyer michael moscaritolo was arrested for murder and unarmed burglary. his girlfriend lauren kalil was also taken into custody accused of hiding evidence. a third suspect james ferguson was arrested l.a. month. today moscaritolo and kalil will be arraigned. we do expect to learn more details as police say this case is not over. live in plymouth, sera congi,

emily: there are new questions after a missing woman is found stuffed in a crawl space in her own home. those questions directed right at police. sue hutchinson disappeared three weeks ago. her roommate stephen andrade was found in a tewksbury motel last week, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. police believe he killed hutchinson before taking off. family called police on sunday after noticing a strong odor in her home. they say they don't understand why police didn't catch it after searching the apartment several times. police say the crawl space was walled off preventing them from discovering the body. randy: new overnight major changes coming to embattled car manufacturer volkswagen, following an emissions scandal revealed last month. v.w. announcing this morning it is changing to a new diesel emissions technology. that's after fallout from the scandal over cars equipped with computer software that allowed vehicles to evade u.s. emissions tests. the company says it also plans to cut $1.1 billion in annual investment spending. emily: a judge will hear

arguments today in the aaron hernandez double murder case. prosecutors are trying to get ahold of physical evidence involving a third party. the details of that evidence have not been released. hernandez is accused of killing two men in 2012 after an encounter at a boston nightclub. he is already serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder. the stage is set in las vegas as the democrats prepare to take the stage for the party's first televised debate. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, jim webb, martin o'malley, and lincoln chafee will all participate tonight. cnn has a sixth podium available and says it will make room for vice president joe biden if he decides to run. randy: iran has approved the controversial nuclear deal with world powers including the u.s. the country's parliament voted in favor of the deal today. iran's 12-member guardian council could refer the bill back to parliament for more discussion since not all the members were present at the vote. the bill allows iran to withdraw
