mike, there's actual snow and ice right now. not even halloween. mike: because of where they're at, they get what is called raw eye building up on everything. i remember spending a week up there in january. it was amazing to be there. if you ever get a chance to see it in the winter it's more spectacular than in the summer. the freeze warnings are out until 9:00 this morning. then tonight we'll have a new why? freezing mark. ear going to continue it mostly along the coastal areas. that will include the city of boston down to the cape and the islands and the south coastal areas. if you didn't get freezing temperatures last night, you will tonight. if you covered the tender vegetation last night, you will have to do it again tonight because it will be a chilly one out there. state. springfield at 24 degrees. 10 degrees warmer in boston. and about another few more degrees as you head down toward nantucket where it's in the 40's right now. what we have going on are clear skies out there. really crisp and refreshing this morning. this afternoon we may see some of these clouds work their way in and pop up.

near wilkes-barre, pennsylvania. doctors there said the child was severely dehydrated and in need of medical attention; but rather than taking her son to a hospital in pennsylvania, police say cherry decided to drive to boston. friend: she didn't like the medical advice she was getting. get dehydrated or abduct her child. she went to get the right medical attention for her baby. reid: an amber alert was triggered for the mother and infant son friday afternoon after they left pennsylvania. a nurse at boston's children's contacted police after realizing she had just admitted the infant boy. friend: she went straight to the hospital with her child. they found her in the place they needed to find her. reid: cherry was arrested on a child endangerment warrant out of pennsylvania and several outstanding warrants out of massachusetts. her son quavai is now in the

to tiffany is fair at all. reid: tiffany cherry is originally from north andover according to a friend. she will be arraigned on monday morning on charges related to that amber alert and those warrants out of massachusetts, one of which dates back to 2002. in boston, i'm reid lamberty, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: new this morningb oston police say a man from mattapan is under arrest, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. 20-year-old gerard moore was arrested on roxbury street friday night. police say moore was threatening people around the dudley square station. he refused to drop the weapon, which turned out to be this b.b. gun. he was also cited for carrying a pocket knife. frank: a state trooper who was injured in a collision on the mass pike is out of the hospital this morning. the crash happened in newton friday night. the driver of a tractor-trailer that struck the trooper's s.u.v. is now facing charges. investigators say the trooper site when he was hit from behind. a plymouth man is in custody right now accused of driving the wrong way on route 3 early police got a number of reports of a car headed south in the northbound lanes. the driver hit at least one

vehicle. 26-year-old kevin palmer was arrested in bourne. he's facing several charges including driving under the influence. sera: the longtime girlfriend and fugitive companion of boston mobster james "whitey" bulger will be back in a federal courtroom tomorrow. catherine greig is facing criminal contempt charges. she's been refusing to testify for months about whether any other people were helping bulger during his 16 years on the run. she's already serving an eight-year sentence for identity fraud and conspiracy to harbor a fugitive. also in court tomorrow the man accused of killing a mother in swampscott. jason fleury is set to have a bail hearing. the convicted sex offender was arrested in virginia back in august and has been held without bail since then. he's accused of killing jaimee mendez whose body was found along king's beach in january. fleury has pleaded not guilty. frank: a former uber driver is pleading guilty to rape and kidnapping charges. of the courtroom last summer, was accused of picking up a

frank: it's 8:11. welcome back. this is not where you want to be-- inside a car being moved by a mudslide. right now crews are digging out dozens of buried cars in california under several feet of mud. the mess has a parts of a busy highway still shut down. sera: dozens of homes have also been damaged and the clean-up is extensive. crews clearing mud-blocked roads in southern california are racing against the clock and mother nature. saturday morning, construction equipment arrived to aid in the digout before another round of weather hits. >> they're expecting more rain this afternoon, and if that happens, then what we're going to do is probably clear all the personnel that are working in the area just in case there's more mud slides. >> it's pretty scary to see the water on both sides moving very

about how warm it is and a beautiful day for the head of the charles. if you're going to be one of those people heading down there, look, the rowers are out on the water already. we've just about started our first race for the day. they'll go all the way until after 4:00 when the ones start coming out. everybody getting in position. it's a fabulous race to watch. if you get a chance, check it out. it's great. there are thousands of people on the shoreline and always something to do. even if you don't like rowing there's a lot of things going on at the charles. this week the national weather service issued their outlook for the winter. because el nino is going to be very strong they're thinking there's a wet area that will move in here. you think wetter than norming and it's winter, that means snow. doesn't it? they also take a look at the temperatures. they're thinking that the northern tier states may be warmer than normal. here's the question mark we have. when el nino happens it has an impact on the coasts so it's not really a direct correlation to what happens to our weather. all you need is is one or two cold outbreaks with plenty of moisture around and you could have a a winter with a lot of

snow. you always take these long-range forecasts with a grain of salt because they are sort of on the edge. we don't really have a good handle on what's going to happen road. we do have a pretty good handle on what's going to happen the next several days though. 70's. yesterday. that's why today feels so cold to you because we've been so warm. you check out temperatures like bedford at 29 degrees right now 33. boston just staying above the freezing mark had morning. we had a lot of temperatures dropping below that. norwood dropped down to 30 degrees right now. plymouth, taunton. there's a lot of frost out there this morning. you may have to find that ice scraper that you put away last winter. it will be needed this morning. 34 degrees. a northwest wind at 10 miles an hour giving us a wind chill index or how it feels out there. 26 degrees above zero. the wind is out of the northwest at about 10-15 miles per hour. i expect it to pick up a little bit this afternoon probably in the 10-20-mile-per-hour range. that is going to have some

so you see the satellite picture? all nice and clear over us. but notice these clouds out here to the west. some of this actually lake-effect snow that's happening. the cold air blowing across the lake to get the moisture. you get these bands of snow that develop out there. remember buffalo last year the horrible snow they had out there. you get the same effect going on over the cape. we're getting rain showers off shore. i think what will happen this afternoon, we'll see some of these clouds bubble up across the area. we could have a sprinkle or perhaps a flurry. i don't think it will be a big issue but the threat will be out there. you see this is at 7:00 tonight. that's the end of the whole thing and then it clears away. with the clear skies, it's going to get at least as cold tonight as it was last night. probably in some places a couple of degrees colder. so mostly sunny. afternoon clouds today. 44 to 48 degrees. and then tonight evening clouds clearing out overnight tonight. 24-34 degrees for your overnight low. here's what we also have to contend with. another freeze warning overnight tonight. that's why i say if you didn't get freezing temperatures last night you probably will tonight. so anything that was not frozen, it's probably going to get some

frost on it and probably even freezing temperatures. let me break it down for you in our seven-day forecast. here's the way it look. 48 degrees. a bit on the breezy side. a few clouds this afternoon. tomorrow frost likely again in the morning. warming up to 40, 48 degrees. on tuesday about 60. i do have showers coming in that forecast late on wednesday as we start to get this mild air flowing in here. that's going to allow us to warm up nicely on thursday about 64 degrees but we have some showers. first batch comes through in the morning. with this cold front coming through another batch of showers later into the day. two opportunities for rain. but that's not a lot of rain to be talking about. it is a dry forecast. we've been very dry so far. behind that system by the way we have a shot of cool air flowing back in here. that's why you see the high temperatures toward the end of the week like friday and saturday only into the upper 50's which compared to today is still quite a bit milder than what we have going on. today we're just looking at temperatures into the upper 40's but by the end of the week we'll see temperatures in the 50's. midweek look like we'll be seeing temperatures nicely into

frank: a live look at the head of the charles. 36 degrees out there. a bit of a chilly start for all the rowers. stay with us. the "eyeopener" continues. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: boston's city councilors, without a raise since 2006, want a massive one. current laws allow the council themselves to recommend their own pay grade-- and they did, initially a boost of 29%. in a clever fashion, by potentially utilizing an anachronistic loophole, they found the path to a 14% raise by literally sitting on their hands or, to use a football metaphor, lining up in the v formation and letting the clock run out. how did they get there? a year ago, city council president bill linehan proposed increasing the councilors' salary by $25,000 to just over $112,000 annually, citing their lack of a raise for almost a decade. after significant pushback, the council voted themselves a lower increase to $107,500. but boston mayor marty walsh

$99,500 compromise instead. now, thanks to that quirk in city law, if the councilors do nothing, the mayor's pay raise proposal becomes law next month. that's one way to increase your take-home pay, but it's the wrong way. and the entire process needs to change, eliminating the obvious conflict of interest. the council should never again be asked to analyze their own salaries, but this one last time must go on the record and vote. their constituents deserve to know who says yes and who says no. and then those voters can decide if they are getting their money's worth the next time they go to the polls. doing nothing reinforces the public's decidedly negative perception of the games sometimes played by incumbent

sera: volunteers were out in needham yesterday to lend a helping hand to a man in need. frank: angelo terrazzino is a leukemia survivor. but he's recently had some major setbacks preventing him from getting around his home safely. so his daughter took to social media to ask for assistance. the "random smile" project stepped up to the plate. volunteers showed up to help

entrance of his home. >> right now it's very difficult. somebody has to go over and pick him up and carry him out of the house. we'll take that out of the equation. so at least he'll get out of the house now very easily, and like i said, hopefully he only needs this ramp for a couple of months and he'll be able to walk out in a couple months. right now this alleviates one problem they have to think about every day. frank: the next phase of the project will be the addition of an indoor stair lift so that angelo can safely get to his bathroom and bedroom. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist mike wankum. sera: if you went out to walk the dog or take a run or a walk, you felt that chill in the air. mike: but it's kind of refreshing in some ways. sera: okay. frank: let's slow down. i don't know if refreshing is the right word. mike: you have to embrace the season, you know. sera: refreshing for the rowers. mike: for the rowers the cool weather is not too bad. they've worked really really hard out there. the problem is the wind this afternoon.

you see the beautiful foliage that's one of the reasons they hold the head of the charles this time of year because this is supposed to be our peak week for colors here in boston. get out there. there will be thousands of rowers and even many more thousands of spectators out there because we have sunshine. i can remember back in the mid '90's we had a big nor'easter. they had to cancel the race going on. even with a northwesterly wind at 10-20 it's not bad just a little cool. you have to bundle up for it just a tad. as we look over the city it's still 34 degrees. our low temperature this morning in boston 3 degrees. so we're one degree off our morning low but boy it will be a today. northwesterly wind at 10. giving us a wind chill index of 26 degrees. here's that wind i was talking about just coming out of the northwest right here. that's why i think it will build a little bit as we head through the afternoon. not tremendously but 10-20 and still a little gusty. you're trying to row into that breeze. when the big long boats come out at 4:00 this afternoon, then you

really have that wind having a big impact on what they're doing. here's what's happening this morning. we have clear skies. you see the clouds bubbling up out here. remember yesterday they did the same thing. they bubbled up in the afternoon. we had one or two of them producing sprinkles. i think the threat is less than what it was yesterday. even had a trace of an inch of snow reported out at worcester airport last night. so here's what happens. at 3:0 this afternoon you see out here. if you look carefully, you start to see that little snow flake. little rain drop here or there. you get the idea. most of us won't see anything out of this today. overnight tonight the skies clear away. what can we expect in the lows dropping off into the 30's pretty much across the area. 26 degrees in worcester for an overnight low. 31 degrees in boston. and then we'll rebound with temperatures that look like this for today. we have readings into the mid 40's out there. as you look at hudson about 44 degrees for a high temperature today. worcester 41 for a high temperature today. and then we warm it up a little bit tomorrow with plenty of sunshine. watch what happens on tuesday. boy, are we just really skyrocketing up.

what's interesting to watch monday afternoon to tuesday morning, there isn't really much of a temperature drop that will be taking place. south shore, you're going to see the same type of thing going on. for example, bridgewater, 46 today. 50 tomorrow. 64 degrees on tuesday. that is the warming trend that we're talking about there. and the cape, well, you're not going to see quite as dramatic a temperature turn-around. still it will be nice. the breeze is going to keep us cool sunday and monday but warming up a little bit as we head towards tuesday. speaking of that warm-up, let me break it down for you in our seven-day forecast. today breezy and 48. tomorrow frost is likely. freezing conditions in the morning and we'll rebound to 48 degrees. then tuesday we start to warm things up just a little bit across the area. wednesday we've got some showers coming up. late in the night. most of the day is perfectly fine. but then we have these showers on thursday. what's happening is warm air is coming in. so it surges up. we get to 64 degrees. morning. there will probably be a second band of showers late into the afternoon and evening and sandwiched in between is looking like a pretty decent day.

behind it the cooler temperatures flow back in here. we'll see high temperatures pretty much into the upper 50's towards the end of the week. but that still way warmer than what we're going through this morning. in case you're wondering the temperatures we're having today are more typical for thanksgiving week not midweek into parts october. frank: thanks a lot, mike. 8:48. checking some of the other stories happening right now. sera: olympian oscar pistorious is preparing to be released on parole a year after he was sentenced to five years for killing his girlfriend. the track star will be placed under house arrest tuesday in south africa. his release was delayed several times. prosecutors are appealing the culpable homicide verdict, arguing he should be found guilty of murder instead. his appeal will be heard in november. frank: residents in the philippines are braving the elements right now as super typhoon koppu makes landfall. thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. the storm uprooted trees, knocked out power, and destroyed homes. officials say flooding and landslides are possible as the storm slowly moves out over the next couple of days. some residents in central texas are starting to return to their

homes as firefighters gain more control of a masive wildfire. the hidden pines fire burned thousands of acres, destroying homes and businesses. officials say that fire is now about 50 percent contained and it has not spread. power is already being restored in some areas. no one has been injured since the fire started on tuesday. sera: el nino is bringing more than just rain to california. a sea snake was found in ventura county. a surfer discovered the highly venomous creature washed up on shore. these snakes are not typically found along the california coast. the last time that happened was 1972. "5 investigates" probing a law that allows women to be sent to prison even though they have not commited a crime. it's a practice some have called barbaric. and it's one the baker administration says they want to stop. karen anderson got exclusive access to expose the problem. >> you're strip searched. you're given clothes and then you're put in a cell. the cell door slams behind you. it makes your heart sick knowing

that you can't get out of this room. snarch liz santos is still shaken by her 23 days behind bars but she wasn't under arrest and hadn't committed a crime. >> i was confused. i wanted to know why i was there. karen: she was sectioned by police. section 35 of a state law lets people with addictions be held if they're at risk of harm. police had found her passed out with prescription drugs nearby. liz says she doesn't have an addiction problem but is speaking out to help those who do. "5 investigates" got an exclusive look at where liz and beds aren't available. m.c.i. framingham, a prison. liz: it was shocking. it was scary. it was very difficult situation. karen: after a short time in the prison's detox unit, she was sharing this area and the rec yard with accused criminals. liz: that was very intimidating. there were girls in there who were awaiting trial for murder, for armed robbery, for many different crimes.

foot cells like this. they have a sink and toilet, a desk, and they bunk up with other women who are also here for addiction. the women who can be committed for up to 90 days in prison don't have access to the inmate substance abuse program. susan wornick: hundreds of women have been housed in cells like this one. karen: the problem isn't new. 25 years ago newscenter 5's susan wornick revealed the horrors for addicted women in her series "punishment without a crime." >> i was locked up for 23 hours a day in a cage. i was chained. i was manackled. i was searched like a felon. karen: back then state officials vowed to fix the problem and only used framingham as a last resort, but "5 investigates" found more than 1,000 women were sent to this prison for substance abuse in the last five years. jessie rossman: it simply doesn't make sense. karen: the a.c.l.u. filed this lawsuit claiming discrimination, harsh conditions, all while the women are barred from the treatment they need.

jessie rossman: this kind of approach is unconstitutional. it's also ineffective and it isn't saving lives. karen: we asked the baker administration why addicted women are still being housed in prison. >> our goal is to actually end a longstanding practice of sending civilly committed women to m.c.i. framingham for trial. karen: what do you say to people who have heard this for years? >> there's no question this administration will end that practice. >> frustrating to think that so many people that need help are not getting the help that they need. karen: the administration has already started building new secure treatment beds in taunton. we're told the governor plans to file a bill tomorrow that would civilly committed women to prison. karen anderson, "5 investigates." frank: the daring jump and why people were lining up to take it. right now a scary jump right there. this is much calmer. a live look at the charles right now. a beautiful start to the day. a bit chilly.

over the top of us. today it's 48 degrees. tomorrow really cold start again. we'll have more frost and freezing conditions in the morning. only rebound to 48 degrees but look what happens by tuesday, we're up around 60 degrees. i'll show you days this week that are going to be even warmer than that as well as a threat of rain. all the details on that coming up in a few minutes. sera: thanks, mike. this morning we're learning new details about yesterday's amber alert that ended at children's hospital in boston. this mother under arrest; her baby now in state custody. frank: police in pennsylvania put out the alert fearing for the safety of the child. newscenter 5's reid lamberty explains how the mother and baby ended up here. friend (on phone): she was just getting the best medical attention for her child as she possibly could. reid: tiffany cherry, says a friend who spoke to us over the phone, is a 36-year-old mother who drove over 300 miles to bring her sick infant son to one of the nation's best hospitals where he was born less than three months ago. friend: she made a decision in her heart as a mother. reid: it was an act of love, says the friend.

friday afternoon cherry took her son quavai to a health clinic near wilkes-barre, pennsylvania. doctors there said the child was severely dehydrated and in need of medical attention; but rather than taking her son to a hospital in pennsylvania, police say cherry decided to drive to boston. friend: she didn't like the medical advice she was getting. she would never let her child get dehydrated or abduct her child. she went to get the right medical attention for her baby. reid: an amber alert was triggered for the mother and infant son friday afternoon after they left pennsylvania. a nurse at boston's children's contacted police after realizing she had just admitted the infant boy. friend: she went straight to the hospital with her child. they found her in the place they needed to find her. reid: cherry was arrested on a child endangerment warrant out of pennsylvania and several outstanding warrants out of massachusetts. her son quavai is now in the

happening to tiffany is fair at all. reid: tiffany cherry is according to a friend. morning on charges related to that amber alert and those warrants out of massachusetts, one of which dates back to 2002. in boston, i'm reid lamberty, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: new this morningb oston police say a man from mattapan is under arrest, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. 20-year-old gerard moore was arrested on roxbury street friday night. police say moore was threatening people around the dudley square station. he refused to drop the weapon, which turned out to be this b.b. gun. he was also cited for carrying a pocket knife. frank: a state trooper who was injured in a collision on the mass pike is out of the hospital this morning. the crash happened in newton friday night. the driver of a tractor-trailer that hit the trooper's s.u.v. is now facing charges. investigators say the trooper was parked at a construction site when he was hit from behind. a plymouth man is in custody right now accused of driving the wrong way on route 3 early yesterday morning. police got a number of reports of a car headed south in the northbound lanes.

vehicle. 26-year-old kevin palmer was arrested in bourne. he's facing several charges including driving under the influence. sera: the longtime girlfriend and fugitive companion of boston mobster james "whitey" bulger will be back in a federal courtroom tomorrow. catherine greig is facing criminal contempt charges. she's been refusing to testify for months about whether any other people were helping bulger during his 16 years on the run. she's already serving an eight-year sentence for identity fraud and conspiracy to harbor a fugitive. also in court tomorrow the man accused of killing a mother in swampscott. jason fleury is set to have a bail hearing. the convicted sex offender was arrested in virginia back in august and has been held without bail since then. he's accused of killing jaimee mendez whose body was found along king's beach in january. fleury has pleaded not guilty. frank: a former uber driver is behind bars right now after pleading guilty to rape and kidnapping charges. alejandro done, who stayed out of the courtroom last summer, was accused of picking up a

driving for uber. after she got cash from an a.t.m., she was driven to a secluded location and sexually assaulted. done was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in state prison. he still faces rape and assault charges in separate cases between 2006 and 2010. a tragic story out of connecticut this morning. a man who was working inside a smokestack on the yale university campus died after he fell 50 feet down the chimney. that man was working to upgrade yale's central power plant when he fell from a ladder. it took officials about an hour to get him out of the chimney. the man, from oregon, later died at a hospital. the incident is under investigation. sera: although belated, it was a warm welcome home in concord for the new hampshire national guard's detachment 18. governor maggie hassan and senator kelly ayotte were among family and friends who attended the special ceremony. the group returned in july from a nine-month deployment to the middle east. >> it's good for people to be able to know that people are still going and coming back. i think sometimes in the bigger

population people don't realize that, hey, this is still happening. it's been going on for a long time. it's going to keep going on for a long time in my opinion. sera: the unit has been on a break for a few months and is now preparing to get back to work. frank: a unique approach to connecting with the community the police department here in concord, massachusetts, says it plans to issue up to 200 "citations" for good behavior. that could include something like wearing a bicycle helmet or looking both ways before crossing a street. instead of a fine or a court appearance, these citations can be redeemed for two scoops of ice cream at "reasons to be cheerful," a local cafe. i wish more police departments would do things like that. i like that. coming up, israel on alert amid an outbreak of violence. sera: the march for peace as the number of attacks on the streets of jerusalem rises. frank: the cleanup after massive mudslides cover a major highway in southern califionia. the progress and the damage. mike: a cold start to your sunday. the outlook for the rest of your day and when we will see another warmup.

frank: 9:11. welcome back. this is not where you want to be-- inside a car being moved by a mudslide. right now crews are digging out dozens of buried cars in california under several feet of mud. the mess has a parts of a busy highway still shut down. sera: dozens of homes have also been damaged and the clean-up is extensive. crews clearing mud-blocked roads in southern california are racing against the clock and mother nature. saturday morning, construction equipment arrived to aid in the digout before another round of weather hits. >> they're expecting more rain this afternoon, and if that happens, then what we're going to do is probably clear all the personnel that are working in the area just in case there's more mud slides. >> it's pretty scary to see the water on both sides moving very

i was thinking about how i was going to go out the sunroof to get on top of the vehicle. sera: thousands of cars and trucks remain stranded after thursday's massive mud slides. >> i cannot get across to go home. sera: this video shows just how fast the onslaught of mud and water swept across highways and neighborhoods. >> i've never seen this before. sera: as road crews work, families and businesses are clearing out leaving mud-caked belongings out as trash. the roads still so covered it's hard to see the curb. >> we had a couple firefighters >> we were probably about three inches thick in mud. we've been cleaning off and pressure washing all of that. doing a lot of clean-up. it's been crazy. their breath for a possible round two as more rain moves in. sera: back here in boston it's a little chilly out there but the sunshine is making it beautiful. frank: the view over the river right now. mike: the studio is next to the

charles river and runners are coming by. sera: this is the image of boston. it's perfect weather. mike: the reason they have it this week is because the foliage starts to change too. it's a little cool, i know. for the rowers perfect weather. breezy this afternoon. i want to tell you what's going on with these freeze watches and warnings. we had a freeze warning which technically expired 15 minutes ago. now we've issued a new one for later tonight and tomorrow morning. why? because there were a few areas right near the coastline that did not get to 32 degrees last night. so because of that, it will happen tonight. nirdz, if it didn't freeze last night, it will freeze tonight. another chilly one out there. how about the low temperatures this morning? how cold did it get? dropped down to 23 in worcester, 33 in boston. we did not technically get to the 2-degree mark. remember that reading is taken at the airport which is closer towards carver and close to the cranberry bogs. probably downtown plim ut didn't get that cold. out at the airport it did get to 32 degrees.

look at that. orange and jaffrey, woo, 23 degrees this morning. had to bundle up out there. the sunrise is now 7:00 in the morning. it's going to keep getting a little bit later, a little bit later until we get to halloween. that is the latest sunrise of the year. 7:16. why? because we changed the clocks that night and on november 1, the sunrise is going to be at 6:17 in the morning. so that is the latest one of the year that you have. so if you're one of those early morning joggers, you're going to get a little bit of relief coming up in here in a couple of weeks. the peak colors are just off to the west. moderate colors around the city. running a little bit behind schedule. it was running way behind schedule a couple weeks ago but making up for lost time. nice color sitting out there as well. as you look over the city, no clouds. 36 degrees. northwest wind at 13 giving us a wind chill index right now of 28 degrees. there are the clear skies that you see as you walk outside. but notice the clouds out here. notice what's going to happen like we did yesterday. we get the puffy clouds that develop into the afternoon.

one or two of those as we saw yesterday could produce a sprinkle. it won't be widespread. here's the way the maps look at 4:00 today. again you're seeing a few spots of clouds. maybe a sprinkle or a flurry but most of us won't see anything out of the whole thing. just to give you something to talk about. as we head to the overnight hours the skies clear away. that the reason the freeze warning has been issue smed. today mostly sunny. afternoon clouds. 44-48 degrees and a northwesterly breeze. tonight with evening clouds and then clearing overnight. 24 to 34 degrees. that's what i mean. we're going to see freezing conditions as we head through the overnight hours. over the next seven days, we'll get the few afternoon clouds and 48. tomorrow we start out with the chilly temperatures. we rebound but, you know, even a 20-degree temperature spread is a pretty good temperature run. you're starting that cold. it's going to take a while to get things to warm up. we do warm up as we head for tuesday's forecast. we're going to start seeing the winds come out of the south. as that southerly wind builds in here, it will push the temperature up to 60 degrees. it will be breezy.

was arson. the new life missionary baptist church is now the fifth house of worship burned in less than two weeks. investigators are searching for clues that could link these fires. church members are holding service on the lawn today. these six church leaders and parishioners are now facing charges including manslaughter and assault for brutally beating sanctuary last week in upstate new york. among those accused-- the boys' parents. 19-year-old lucas leonard died and his 17-year-old brother was hospitalized in serious condition. frank: astronaut scott kelly has now spent more time in space than any other american. today marks 385 days, setting a new record for his stay aboard the international space station. nasa says he is scheduled to complete his mission on march 3. by then, he would have spent 522

pathetic. the g.o.p. candidates will meet face to face for their next debate in just 11 days. hillary clinton will be off the campaign trail next week, headed to washington for that public showdown with house republicans over the benghazi attacks. meanwhile, sources say vice president biden's decision is imminent. sera: republican candidates are out campaigning in new hampshire this weekend. senator ted cruz held a rally at the hopkinton fairground in contoocook yesterday, then stopped at a 603 alliance event at the fairground. the g.o.p. hopeful railed against what he calls corruption in washington and said his supporters are grassroots conservative activists. and senator rand paul is back in the granite state for a three-day trip. he stopped at tucker's restaurant in hooksett for a meet and greet. with 15 candidates vying for your vote, paul says he's trying to set himself apart from the pack with his budget plan. this morning senator paul will stop at the dalton gun range at 8:00. frank: 5 on the opioid crisis.

life and mission in rochester. every stride inspired by one man. it's just jim, you know. jim was loved. sera: over 1,000 runners and walkers taking part in the foley foundation 5k in honor of rochester, new hampshire, native james foley. the young journalist covering the conflict in syria was killed while being held captive by john foley: he would have loved being here today. sera: foley's father john and his mother diane joined in the event. a bitter-sweet journey to the finish line. john foley: alternating between sadness and joy. the sadness is just because we miss jim. the joy is that so many people wanted to do this for jim. diane foley: i'm so grateful because this helps his spirit of goodness to continue in the world.

sera: volunteers were out in needham yesterday to lend a helping hand to a man in need. frank: angelo terrazzino is a leukemia survivor. but he's recently had some major setbacks preventing him from getting around his home safely. so his daughter took to social media to ask for assistance. the "random smile" project stepped up to the plate. volunteers showed up to help build a ramp to the back entrance of his home. >> right now it's very difficult. somebody has to go over and pick him up and carry him out of the house. we'll take that out of the equation. so at least he'll get out of the house now very easily, and like i said, hopefully he only needs this ramp for a couple of months and he'll be able to walk out in a couple months. right now this alleviates one problem they have to think about every day. frank: the next phase of the project will be the addition of an indoor stair lift so that angelo can safely get to his bathroom and bedroom. >> now your storm team 5

that's now our daytime high temperatures for today. tonight evening clouds and then clearing away overnight tonight and the temperature just goes down like a rock. 24 to 34 degrees with a northwesterly breeze dying down. and about 5-10 miles an hour. we're talking about sunrises. the sun rises at 7:00 this morning. the sunset is before 6:00. we have to wait until march of next year before we get it back above 6:00. on halloween night the sunset is is at 5:39. remember spring forward, fall back. we fall back an hour. that means the sunset will be at 4:378 on november 1. that's not even the evening sunset. that is more of an afternoon sunset. we have a freeze warning out for tonight. in the areas that didn't drop below 32 degrees last night will tonight. that's why you're seeing along the coast, the cape and the islands nantucket is not included in this. even along the south coastal areas we should be seeing frosty and freezing conditions as we head through the overnight hours. here's the way your search-day forecast breaks down.

milton high is helping sportscenter 5's mike lynch kick off the 31st season of high 5. frank: and as lynchie discovered, a new coach, a new attitude, and a renewed sense of self-confidence has propelled the football team into unfamiliar, but hardly unwelcome, territory. >> 1, 2, 3. mike: when you think of quality football programs in the bay state league, you think walpole or natick. but this season there is a new force in the league. >> milton. >> milton. >> milton. >> we are milton. >> 1, 2, 3. mike: the wildcats are making plenty of noise through five games. they are unbeaten with wins over walpole, natick, and needham. in the previous 13 seasons, milton has had a winning record just once. so what's so different this year? >> just playing as a team. good team defense. good team offense. on every phase of the ball and on the sideline too. mike: milton has a new coach steve dombowski who took swampscott to five super bowls, and he's brought his high-energy offense to the wildcats. >> i think it starts with the coach and has just trickled down to all of us. we don't go into a week thinking anybody can beat us. we know if we play our game and execute like we know we can, no one can stop us. mike: having fun yet?

have a great day. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: boston's city councilors, without a raise since 2006, want a massive one. current laws allow the council themselves to recommend their own pay grade-- and they did, initially a boost of 29%. in a clever fashion, by potentially utilizing an anachronistic loophole, they found the path to a 14% raise by literally sitting on their hands or, to use a football metaphor, lining up in the v formation and letting the clock run out. how did they get there? a year ago, city council president bill linehan proposed increasing the councilors' salary by $25,000 to just over $112,000 annually, citing their lack of a raise for almost a decade. after significant pushback, the council voted themselves a lower increase to $107,500. but boston mayor marty walsh vetoed that idea and proposed a $99,500 compromise instead. now, thanks to that quirk in city law, if the councilors do nothing, the mayor's pay raise

proposal becomes law next month. that's one way to increase your take-home pay, but it's the wrong way. and the entire process needs to change, eliminating the obvious conflict of interest. the council should never again be asked to analyze their own salaries, but this one last time must go on the record and vote. their constituents deserve to know who says yes and who says no. and then those voters can decide if they are getting their money's worth the next time they go to the polls. doing nothing reinforces the public's decidedly negative perception of the games sometimes played by incumbent
