knocked off course by some wind. good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price. cindy is here. welcome back. cindy: thank you. randy: on a very cold morning. cindy: i know it. it feels like we're nearing the end of november instead of the end of october. it is so cold this morning. a lot of us had a hard freeze yesterday morning. the coastline didn't. we're seeing those freezing temperatures this morning but look at this. as cold as 18-- 18 in orange right now. wow! jaffrey is 20 degrees, worcester down to 25. even boston now down below the freezing mark at 31. beverly 28 degrees. we've got upper 20's around plymouth even all the way down to the south coast we're in the upper 20's now. falmouth below freezing but nantucket kind of sticking out there, right? right around 40 degrees. you are not part of this freeze warning but the rest of the coastline is. cape cod all the way up to cape ann including the city of boston until 9:00 a.m. we're seeing the below-freezing temperatures now.

starting the morning on schedule. emily, randy. back to court for the long-time girlfriend of james whitey randy: catherine greig is hours away from facing contempt charges in federal court. the eyeopener's sera congi is live in south boston with what's at stake. sera: catherine greig is already serving an eight-year sentence in prison. but this morning, she's facing even more jail time. greig has been asked to testify before a grand jury looking into whether or not others helped whitey bulger during his 16 years on the run. the 64-year-old has kept quiet since she and bulger were arrested in 2011. already serving time for harboring a fugitive and identity fraud, newscenter 5 legal analyst martha coakley says getting more out of her could be a challenge. martha coakley. she is suppose to do something. she's not doing i she can choose not to do it but she'll have to pay the consequences of additional time

in jail. sera: investigators also want to know about money or assets bulger may be hiding. after their arrest, more than $800,000 was found hidden in the walls of their apartment. today's arraignment is expected to go pretty quickly. we'll have updates for you on-air, online, and the mobile apps. the judge is expected to set a trial date. in south boston, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: a mother will answer to charges today in boston following a weekend amber alert. tiffany cherry was arrested early saturday at boston children's hospital where she brought her son to be treated for severe dehydration. she'll be arraigned on charges related to the amber alert and other outstanding warrants in massachusetts. cherry's two-month-old son is in the custody of d.c.f.

emily: a big win for the pats in indianapolis. that's as the team tries to put deflategate to rest. the scandal on everyone's mind following last year's afc championship matchup between the pats and the colts. colts fans taking a few shots at new england last night over the scandal. the players fired up as well. the colts marched in on an opening drive. they went 89 yards in 13 plays-- all in the first quarter. the pats kept it eventful with an 80-yard drive of their own, brady to julian edelman. colts led 21-20 at the half. but the pats turned on the jets in the second. rob gronkowski with a t.d. making it 27-21. each team would score one more time. >> not something they've done in the past. we didn't know what the play was going to be obviously so it was a good heads-up play. >> as long as you play by your rules, you know and do what your coach says, you'll be fine. we made a play. 34-27 patriots, the final. and a move that raised eyebrows here. brady handed the football to an employee. when he was asked about it,

the ball wasn't for him. sports site draftkings defying an order from nevada's gaming control board. the group demanded draftkings cease operations in the state until it applied for state fanduel did cooperate with the ruling this weekend. however, according to "the new york times," draftkings admits it allowed some customers who placed bets before thursday's ruling to play. a spokesperson for draftkings says the company does take the board's decision seriously and has instructed nevada customers to close their accounts. randy: a bail hearing today for the man accused of killing a swampscott mother. convicted sex offender jason fleury has been held without bail since his arrest in virginia in august. he's accused of killing jaimee mendez whose body was found along king's beach in january. fleury has pleaded not guilty. two people are dead following a house fire in chicopee. the flames broke out yesterday morning around 7:30. by the time firefighters arrived, the entire single-family home was engulfed in flames. the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

investigation. emily: a decision could be made as early as today to try five guantanamo prisoners for their alleged role in the 9-11 terror attacks. proceedings in the case were halted in 2014 after it was discovered members of the defense team had been questioned by the f.b.i. about a breach of security rules. a new report from the justice department says at this time none of those lawyers will face criminal charges. the judge overseeing the case will now decide if the case can move forward. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton heads to capitol hill this week to testify on the deadly attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. meantime there's more bad blood between republican candidates donald trump and jeb bush over the 9-11 terror attacks. trump and bush debating over the weekend about who's to blame for the attacks on the world trade center. trump suggesting he could have prevented it by keeping the terrorists out of the u.s. bush, whose brother was in

respond. jeb bush: he's an actor playing the role of the candidate for president. not boning up on the issues. >> i'm not blaming george bush but i don't want jeb bush to say my brother kept us safe. emily: meanwhile, vice president joe biden is nearing a decision on 2016. abc news reporting biden called the v.p. of the nation's powerful firefighters union on friday and discussed a campaign strategy in detail. randy: a mechanical problem diverts a jetblue flight to boston. the plane was initially flying from florida to worcester on sunday. the problem reportedly stemmed from the flaps on the wings which were stuck in an upward position. the flight landed at logan because it was coming in at a higher speed than normal and needed a longer runway. no one was hurt. passengers were bused to worcester following the landing. emily: new this morning the faa and the department of transportation cracking down on drones. randy: the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live at logan airport with what we are

learning ahead of today's announcement. todd: randy, emily, good morning. as you know, there have been cases of drones country including here at logan. this morning, the federal government is taking action in hopes of better regulating the devices. an estimated half a million drones are already flying. another 750,000 are expected to be sold during the holiday season. "the wall street journal" reporting the f.a.a. and the transportation department want recreational drone users to register their devices. federal officials plan to appoint a task force to oversee the registration policy. the task force would have to make rules on what specific drones would be allowed to fly near airports or beyond the sight of an operator. they would also figure out how drone users will register and if current drone owners would have to abide by the new rules. the plan would go into effect by the end of the year, something critics are already skeptical of this morning. this video shot from clinton, massachusetts, and also windham, new hampshire. seeing some snow flakes yesterday. it was almost a sun-snow shower because we had the sun out as well from those dark clouds in the distance. eep in boston yesterday, there were a couple of flakes of snow. we got a trace of snow officially at logan airport. not the earliest on record. that was october 10 back in 1979 but nonetheless it's a sign of how unusually cold it is out there. certainly a cold start to the week. we're going to have a lot of sunshine today. warm-up comes through the middle of the week here. and our best chance of showers this week is on thursday. skies are mainly clear this morning. there is one exception to that. notice the outer cape and nan tublght. got the cold air coming in over the relatively warmer ocean waters. water temperature right now is 54. so you get the temperatures in the 20's. the effects are clouds and a couple of showers which has mostly been off shore. otherwise it is clear across new england this morning. and the temperatures are very cold. in the city right now 31 degrees in boston.

look at the mid 20's around bedford. beverly is in the upper 20's this morning. cold spot is orange where it is down to 18 degrees this morning. south of town we've got 20's, tending all the way down to new bedford on the south coast. falmouth now 28 degrees. plymouth 28 degrees. 22 as you're heading out in taunton. you want to dress for winter this morning. bright sunshine today but it will stay chilly all day long. high temperature between 45 and 50 degrees. keep in mind an average high this time of year is about 60. only 49 boston. cool spot will be worcester at 45. mid 40's on the cape. maybe touching 50 degrees in lawrence. certainly colder than average day but with lighter winds and sunshine it won't feel as blustery as it did yesterday. on the cold side of high pressure right now. as this slides eastward warmer southwesterly winds are going to start to take over tonight and into tomorrow. look at these temperatures chicago westward. 40's, 50's, 60's. that's the warmth that is going to start to come on in. we'll start the night clear and notice overnight some clouds come in.

out an alert to students telling them that it happened early sunday morning in a student village 2 dorm room. police say the victim did not know the attacker. but to get into the building he would have needed a student i.d. or someone to sign him in. students in that building say this is not the first time they've heard of people bursting into dorm rooms overnight. >> someone came into our main door that was unlocked and tried all our single rooms. jim: campus police are telling students to lock their doors. they're also checking surveillance video to try to identify a suspect. for now we're live on the b.u. campus this morning, i'm jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: jim, thank you. massachusetts education leaders results of a new test that could replace mcas. the board of elementary and secondary education will discuss test given to some schools last spring. scores of the new test will be released tomorrow.

we had a trace of snow. not the earliest on record. that was back in 1979. on october 10. nonetheless, yeah, it snowed yesterday in many areas. didn't amount to anything. is changing. tight. milder temperatures are going to start to take hold here as we get towards the middle of the week. you can see that warmth right now streaming up to the nation's mid section where it's in the 50's and 60's this morning. colder. this is the coldest day of the week. temperatures as early as tomorrow back in the 60's in the afternoon but it will come with kind of a trade-off. more clouds around during the day tomorrow. morning. 25 worcester. 31 in boston but 20's here north shore, south shore, 18 in orange this morning. so a very cold start. by 8:00 a.m. we're still right around the freezing mark. by lunchtime mid 40's. bright sunshine all day long but about 45 to 50 degrees is the best we do for high temperature. winds out of the west 5-10 so not as windy as yesterday. without that biting wind, it will feel better than it did yesterday.

you can see the sunshine pretty much all day long. those clouds will be with us during the day tomorrow. there's a band of showers to our south ward. approach. tomorrow is a windy, milder day clouds around. a lot of spot showers. still mostly cloudy on wednesday but it should be dry. look at that. we're still up around 60 degrees. a far cry from that as you're heading out this morning. olessa, haven't used the heat car. olessa: thank you, cindy. there is the expressway by the south bay mall. you can see the northbound side starting to pick up some of those rush hour delays. the rest of the ride looks fairly quiet this morning as you head south. 24 still doing okay. route 3 as well. your trip on the expressway is about 15 from braintree to boston. the pike is still quiet. 15-minute ride from 495 traveling out toward 128. and then 93 southbound some volume building out of andover. once again approaching spot pond. trains and buses still running on schedule.

emily, randy. randy: the long-time girlfriend of james whitey bulger heads back to court in boston today. emily: our sera congi is live outside the courthouse with what we can expect at today's hearing. sera? sera: emily and randy, katherine greig is already serving an eight-year jail sentence. today begins another chapter where she could face more jail time. now greig is facing a charge of criminal contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury about whether anyone else helped whitey bulger during their 16 years on the lam. she was convicted last year for harboring a fugitive and identity fraud. at today's hearing on this new charge, well, it's expected to be short. the judge is expected to set a trial date. like from the federal courthouse, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. jim: the search is on for the suspect in a sexual assault that allegedly happened at boston university student village complex. this happened on sunday night sometime around 2:00. compass police stentd out an alert to students over the weekend warning them of the alleged incident that happened during a very busy weekend on the b.u. campus. it was parents the weekend.

know the alleged assailant but the concern is how he got in that build inning the first place. they're looking at surveillance videos to try to make a determination. live on the b.u. campus, i'm jim lokay, wcvb. newscenter 5. todd: the federal government has a new plan to regulate drones near airports like logan after a series of close calls around the country. the wall street journal is reporting this morning that the f.a.a. and the transportation department want recreational drone pilots to register their devices. some drones will not be allowed to fly near airports or beyond the sight of the operator. the plan will go into effect at the end of the year. reporting live from logan, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: deflategate on the brain for colts fans as the patriots take on indianapolis. fans, fired up last night over last season's scandal. and so were the colts, as they marched in on an opening drive. they went 89 yards in 13 plays-- all in the first quarter. the pats kept it eventful with

brady to julian edelman. colts led 21-20 at the half. but the pats turned on the jets in the second. they win, 34-27. randy: a mother will answer to charges today in boston following a weekend amber alert. tiffany cherry was arrested early saturday at boston children's hospital where she brought her son from pennsylvania to be treated for severe dehydration. she'll be arraigned on charges related to the amber alert and other outstanding warrants in massachusetts. cherry's two-month-old son is in state custody. emily: a special memorial today to honor fallen massachusetts firefighters. state leaders and the public will gather at the annual ceremony at the state house this afternoon. the event honors those firefighter lives lost throughout the years, both off and on duty. 24 names will be added to the 2015 ring of honor. donald trump: i'm not blaming george bush but i don't want jeb bush to say, my brother kept us safe."

between republican presidential candidates donald trump and jeb bush. over the weekend, the two debated about who's to blame for the september 11 attacks on the world trade center. bush was quick to respond claiming trump is just an actor and not taking the issues of the presidency seriously. randy: a bizarre crime under investigation at a church in detroit. police say a man attacked a pastor with a brick on sunday. but the pastor managed to pull out a gun and shoot the suspect. the man later died at the hospital. the pastor was taken into custody for questioning. emily: the u.s. military confirms the death of a top al qaeda commander. the pentagon says the saudi national was killed in a u.s.-led airstrike in syria last week. he was accused of funneling money and fighters for the terror group. the u.s. says his death is a serious blow to al-qaeda and its allies. randy: a month-long wave of one israeli soldier was killed and ten others wounded in an attack at a bus station. police say an arab attacker armed with a gun and a knife opened fire.

that's as israel tightens security around the country. u.s. secretary of state john kerry said he will meet with israeli and palestinian leaders this week. emily: american airlines has been slowly transitioning u.s. airways into its own reservation system for the past two years. oscar pistorius is set to be released from prison tomorrow and will be placed under house arrest. the paralympian has served one year of his five-year sentence. he was convicted of culpable homicide for the shooting death of his girlfriend in 2013. prosecutors have appealed that decision and are still seeking a murder conviction. set to unveil a new website today to encourage students to continue their education after high school. the site is called better make room dot-org.

students can get information and a.c.t. exams filling out financial aid forms and visiting college campuses. emily: an unusual family reunion at boston's museum of fine arts centered around this painting. it's called "three sisters of the copeland family," painted in 1854 by william matthew prior. two women -- originally from boston -- recently discovered little girls pictured in the work. yesterday, they brought their families together at the m.f.a. to celebrate their heritage. randy: the mets came out on fire against the cubs in game 2 of the national league championship series. david wright hits the ball deep to center field, scoring a run in the first. the mets knock down a two-run homer later that same inning. it's 4-0 when the cubs try to make a comeback in the sixth. but it wasn't enough. mets win, 4-1, to take a 2-0 series lead.

emily: a show of strength at logan airport for the inaugural "pulling for hope" event. teams of 20 competed to pull a jetblue passenger airliner 12 feet along a runway. the boston police department, boston bruins, and northeastern university were among the participants. proceeds go to the american cancer society. randy: a chill on the charles for the regatta this weekend. thousands bundled up along the banks of the river while rowers braced the conditions for the head of the charles race. every year the regatta draws 11,000 athletes to test their rowing skills against the world's best. some 400,000 spectators watched the signature event this year. emily: a sure sign of winter. maine ski resort sunday river opens today. there's no real snow just yet, but the resort started making some on saturday. this year's opening day is about two weeks ahead of schedule. you can understand why when you see these temperatures we have

this morning. randy: perfect for making snow. cindy: you've got it. when boston is below freezing, you know it's cold enough up in maine for sure. 31 degrees right now. clear skies. this is the coldest morning in boston since april 2. that's the last time we dipped below the freezing mark officially in the city. we don't just have the cold temperatures. a little bit of wind starting out there this morning. so the wind chill in town right now is 21 degrees. it feels like 16 in worcester. so you really do want to dress for winter this morning. we've got that freeze warning up and down the coast through 9:00 a.m. we had the freezing temperatures over the interior on sunday morning. we're getting them along the coastline this morning. take a lookate a beverly at 28 degrees. 28 in lawrence as well. worcester 25. as cold as 18 though in orange this morning. south shore, you're in the upper 20's in plymouth. taunton down to 21. even on the cape, notice falmouth now sitting at 28 degrees. a few clouds. ocean-effect clouds on the outer cape and nantucket. these will continue to shift off shore. bright sunshine pretty much all day long.

light winds make it feel a little better than yesterday even though our high temperatures today hold between about 45 and 50 degrees. looking for highs of just 49 degrees in boston today. we're on the cold side of high pressure now but as this slides eastward, milder temperatures on the backside. right now they are back towards chicago in the upper 40's and minneapolis in the mid 50's. that's the air mass that is swinging in our direction so we'll start out tonight clear but clouds come in overnight. we'll hit our low temperatures tonight in the 30's and lower 40's. early in the night. and the temperatures rise a little bit by morning. that warmer air is to come on a gusty wind tomorrow, sustained winds, 15-20 miles per hour. tomorrow is a windy day. as this front approaches we'll have a lot of clouds around. certainly going to be on the milder side but there could be a couple of showers around tomorrow as well. the best chance i think north of the pike. 63 the high temperature in town tomorrow. notice the showers as they drop south ward tomorrow. they fall apart a little bit. not looking for a wet day. just a lot more clouds and that gusty breeze. and the chance of a spot shower north of the pike.
