knocked off course by some wind. that's ahead in this half-hour. good morning. i'm emory leemer. randy: and i'm randy price. cindy, the coldest morning. cindy: by a lot. since april 2 in boston. it sure has been a while since we've had freezing temperatures pretty much everywhere. there's still enough wind out there that the wind chill is something you need to think about this morning. did i just actually say that? yeah, this is what the wind chill value is as you head out the door this morning. it feels like 16 in worcester. and it feels like it's in the lower 20's boston. upper 20's even on the cape. so you really do need to dress for winter this morning. mid 20's now in beverly. we've gone from 31 back to 32 in boston. but still right around freezing. 25 in worcester. as cold as 18 in orange. we've dropped into the teens now in norwood at 19. taunton is 21. 20's all the way down to the south coast now and over to falmouth as well sitting at 28 degrees. so it is a cold start. freeze warning up along the coastline until 9:00 a.m. we had our freeze yesterday morning over the interior.

if you're traveling out of methuen stop-and-go. stays heavy to dascomb road in andover. more volume approaching spot pond. eastbound side of the pike looks good. 15-20, 495 to 128. a little bit of a delay 95 northbound into 93. 24 out of randolph and route 3 from weymouth to braintree. expressway, that portion of your ride 15 minutes or so from braintree to boston. we are watching some delays on the trains this morning. the blue line has minor delays and the d-branch of the green lionels looking at minor delays. randy, emily. emily: thank you. back to court for the long-time girlfriend of james whitey bulger. randy: catherine greig is hours away from facing contempt charges in federal court. the eyeopener's sera congi is at stake. sera: catherine greig is already serving an eight-year sentence in prison. but this morning, she's facing even more jail time. greig has been asked to testify before a grand jury looking into whitey bulger during his 16 years on the run. the 64-year-old has kept quiet since she and bulger were arrested in 2011. already serving time for harboring a fugitive and

identity fraud, newscenter 5 legal analyst martha coakley says getting more out of her could be a challenge. martha coakley: she is supposed to do something. she's not doing it. she can choose not to do it, but she'll have to pay the consequences of additional time in jail. sera: investigators also want to know about money or assets bulger may be hiding. after their arrest, more than $800,000 was found hidden in the walls of their california apartment. today's arraignment is expected to go pretty quickly. the judge weather-- the judge will will set a trial date. we'll have updates for you on-air, online, and the mobile apps. in south boston, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: a mother will answer to charges today in boston following a weekend amber alert. tiffany cherry was arrested early saturday at boston children's hospital where she brought her son to be treated for severe dehydration. she'll be arraigned on charges related to the amber alert and other outstanding warrants in massachusetts.

state custody. emily: a big win for the pats in indianapolis. that's as the team tries to put deflategate to rest following last year's afc championship matchup between the pats and the colts fans fired up last night over the scandal. and so were the colts as they marched in on an opening drive. they went 89 yards in 13 plays-- all in the first quarter. the pats kept it eventful with an 80-yard drive of their own, brady to julian edelman here. colts led 21-20 at the half. and it was a trick play gone wrong in the third quarter for the colts who had a chance to take the lead. they try to draw the pats offsides but the pats leap on the snap back, which wasn't supposed to happen, for the down. >> not something they've done in the past. we didn't know what the play was going to be obviously so it was a good heads-up play. >> as long as you play by your rules, you know and do what your coach says, you'll be fine. we made a play. emily: 34-27 patriots, the final. and a move that raised some

eyebrows. brady taking a game ball and stuffing it in his helmet. he then handed it to an employee. when asked about it after the game, brady had no comment, only saying the ball wasn't for him. embattled boston-based fantasy sports site draftkings defying an order from nevada's gaming control board. the group demanded draftkings cease operations in the state until it applied for state gambling licenses. fanduel did cooperate with the ruling this weekend. however, according to "the new york times," draftkings admits it allowed some customers who placed bets before thursday's ruling to play. a spokesperson for draftkings says the company does take the board's decision seriously and has instructed nevada customers to close their accounts. randy: a bail hearing today for the man accused of killing a swampscott mother. convicted sex offender jason fleury has been held without bail since his arrest in virginia in august. he's accused of killing jaimee mendez whose body was found along king's beach in january. fleury has pleaded not guilty.

two people are dead following a house fire in chicopee. the flames broke out yesterday morning around 7:30. by the time firefighters arrived, the entire single-family home was engulfed in flames. the identities of the victims have not yet been released. the cause of the fire is under investigation. emily: a decision could be made as early as today to try five guantanamo prisoners for their alleged role in the 9-11 terror attacks. proceedings in the case were halted in 2014 after it was discovered members of the defense team had been questioned by the f.b.i. about a breach of security rules. a new report from the justice department says at this time none of those lawyers will face criminal charges. the judge overseeing the case will now decide if the case can move forward. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton heads to capitol hill this week to testify on the deadly attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. meantime there's more bad blood between republican candidates donald trump and jeb bush over

the 9-11 terror attacks. trump and bush debating over the weekend about who's to blame for the attacks on the world trade center. trump suggesting he could have prevented it by keeping the terrorists out of the u.s. bush, whose brother was in office at the time, was swift to respond. jeb bush: he's an actor playing the role of the candidate for president. not boning up on the issues. donald trump: i'm not blaming george bush but i don't want jeb bush to say my brother kept us safe. emily: meanwhile, vice president joe biden is nearing a decision on 2016. abc news reporting biden called the v.p. of the nation's powerful firefighters union on friday and discussed a campaign strategy in detail. randy: a mechanical problem diverts a jetblue flight to boston. the plane was initially flying from florida to worcester on sunday. the problem reportedly stemmed from the flaps on the wings which were stuck in an upward position. the flight landed at logan because it was coming in at a higher speed than normal and needed a longer runway. no one was hurt.

passengers were bused to worcester following the landing. emily: new this morning the f.a.a. and the department of transportation cracking down on drones. randy: the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live at logan airport with what we are learning ahead of today's announcement. todd: randy, emily, good morning. as you know, there have been cases of drones flying near airports around the country including here at logan. this morning, the federal government is taking action in hopes of better regulating the devices. an estimated half a million drones are already flying. another 750,000 are expected to be sold during the holiday season. "the wall street journal" reporting the f.a.a. and the transportation department want recreational drone users to register their devices. federal officials plan to appoint a task force to oversee the registration policy. the task force would have to make rules on what specific drones would be allowed to fly near airports or beyond the sight of an operator.

a lot of us were reacting the same way yesterday if you saw-- did you see 'em? olessa: i did. snow flakes. cindy: we had several reports in many communities of some snow flurries. clinton, massachusetts, this video from here. we also have this even in the flying. airp. officially yesterday. not the earliest on record but very unusual. october 10, 1979, the earliest snow flakes on record. nonetheless a few snow flakes yesterday in boston. it kind of looked like winter there for a second. boy does it feel like it this morning. these are the current wind chills. this is what you need to dress for this morning. it feels like it's in the teens and 20's across a good portion of the area. so a cold start certainly to the week here. but things are going to warm up. 60's are back here for the middle of the week. our best chance of showers this week coming in on thursday. looking like mainly a dry week ahead. you can see how clear the skies are this morning. the exception here in the outer

60 this time of year. well below average once again today. we're on the cold side of high pressure right now. this will slide eastward. on the backside warmer winds are bringing warmth to places like chicago where it's near 50. 57 in minneapolis this morning. that's the air mass that works on in. we'll start the night clear. we'll bring in clouds overnight so temperatures bottom out in the 30's and lower 40's tonight early and then the temperatures may pick up a little bit before the sun comes up tomorrow. winds pick up out of the southwest so tomorrow is a breezy day with mostly cloudy skies. as the front drops south ward can't rule out a stray shower but it looks like the bulk of the shower activity will be across northern new england tomorrow. this is what i mean as we break it down for you. look at our high of 63 degrees tomorrow. milder yes but with that breeze showers fall apart as they drop england. a fair amount of clouds limited sunshine. we'll keep clouds in place on wednesday as well. tuesday, wednesday, thursday in the 60's. on thursday. behind that front 50's heading into next weekend so not the

at florida's "zombie-con." one person is dead this morning, five others hurt, after saturday night's violence. the annual event drawing tens of thousands to fort meyers, florida. but this year, chaos erupted when gunshots were fired. the zombie theme and costumes all adding to the confusion. >> we didn't know if it was real or fake. so we kind of like ran and then we're like, wait, was that real? when we went back people were screaming, no, it was fake. randy: 20-year-old tyrell taylor, a football player at a junior college, was killed. police are hoping more witnesses come forward to track down the shooter. right now police in mexico say they are closing in on the notorious drug lord known as el chapo. he escaped from a maximum security prison over the summer. security forces say they have tracked him to a mountainous region where they believe he is hiding. emily: topping economic headlines this morning. a mixed story with the asian markets. chinese shares rose overnight after quarterly growth figures boosted optimism. other asian markets were mixed after trimming losses.

assault happened early sunday morning in a student village 2 dorm room. police say the victim did not know the attacker. but to get into the building he would have needed a student i.d. or someone to sign him in. students in that building say this is not the first time they've heard of people bursting into dorm rooms overnight. >> someone came into our main door that was unlocked and tried all our single rooms. thankfully they were all locked. jim: campus police are telling students to lock their doors. this point. in the meantime they'll take look at surveillance video to try to figure out who this assailant may be as they continue this investigation on the b.u. campus. in boston, jim lokay, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: massachusetts education leaders are meeting today to discuss results of a new test that could replace mcas. the board of elementary and secondary education will discuss student assessment of the parcc test given to some schools last spring. scores of the new test will be released tomorrow. education leaders will vote next

month whether or not to adopt the parcc test. randy: newscenter 5 on the opioid crisis. startling new numbers released in new hampshire about the number of people prescribed painkillers. more than 13 million doses of what's known as schedule-2 painkillers were dispensed in the granite state in just three months. the state's prescription drug monitoring program reveals more than 108,000 patients filled more than 16 million prescriptions from april through june. about 80 percent were for pain relievers linked to the opioid crisis. lawmakers are considering new rules for how drugs are prescribed. umass medical on the verge of a major medical breakthrough. emily: the discovery that could fight aids and ebola. remembering a victim of the boston marathon attacks. the new tribute to krystle campbell. and how other victims will be honored. randy: and ahead in news to go, a pastor kills an intruder during a church service in detroit.

you have those heavy delays back into wilmington at this point. another crash by 110 south. delays out of methuen. if you thought it was too early again. cindy: that's right. it feels like winter out there this morning. temperatures below freezing even in boston for a time but notice as we go through the day, we'll get up into the 40's but that's it through the afternoon. sunshine. day of the week. tomorrow. but notice more clouds around and a gusty wind tomorrow. these temperatures starting to be more seasonal by the middle of the week. emily: thanks. new research at umass medical school could be the key to scientists discovered a way to possibly control a protein in an h.i.v. cell to keep it from spreading. that discovery could help researchers disable other harmful proteins in viruses like ebola. drug development based on this research would take about two years. randy: breaking ground on a new tribute to a victim of the marathon attacks. a garden of peace in krystle campbell's memory.

eight-year prison sentence. today begins another chapter where she faces even more jail time. greig faces criminal contempt charge for refusing to testify before a grand jury about whether anyone else help whitey bulger duringth 16 years on the lam. she was convicted last year for harboring a fugitive and identity fraud is in prison serving out that sentence. today's hearing is expected to be a short one. the judge is expected to set a trial date. live at the federal courthouse, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. jim: this morning, the search continues for the suspect in an alleged sexual assault that happened here on the b.u. campus it happened in a dorm room over a very busy parents' weekend sometime around early sunday morning, 2:00. campus police already put out an alert to students warning them as to what went on. the advice they're saying at this point is to make sure their doors are locked. as of right now, the alleged victim said she does not know her attacker. police still investigating by way of surveillance video.
