this is northbound from route 24 to the braintree split. construction on 128 in both directions, then again on the pike by the supermarket overpass. no problem north of town and so far we are expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. randy: breaking overnight, a new york city police officer has died, shot and killed in the line of duty. emily: let' s get you right over to the eyeopener' s antoinette antonio. she' s following the breaking developments. antoinette: officer randolph holder was killed late last night after police say he was shot in the head while chasing a suspect. the 33-year-old and his partners were responding to a report of shots fire in manhattan' s east harlem neighborhood. police say the suspect opened fire on officers when they confronted him. holder was struck, pronounced dead later at the hospital. city leaders say the loss is a huge blow to the community. >> mourning a man who gave his

us, and we are humbled by officer randolph hill older' s examples, is example of service and courage, and sacrifice. antoinette: the suspect was tracked down several blocks away from the shooting. three other men were also taken into custody for questioning. holder was a five-year veteran of the force. he is the 4th new york city police officer murdered in the line of duty in the last 11 months. randy: right now, police are searching for the driver accused of hitting a man on the road. he kept going. the eye' s jim lokay is in plymouth with what we know at this hour. jim: we know that victim was riding his bike and we know he suffered serious injuries. this was the scene on carver road overnight not far from the carver line. that' s where police say a driver hit that bicyclist and took off. this happened around 10:00 last night. but police crews were on the

the crash looking for clues. we do not have a description of the vehicle at this point. we' re working to gather more information on the crash and how the victim is doing. we' ll bring you updates as we get them. emily: breaking news right now -- millions of toyotas are on the recall list this morning over a problem with power windows. the automaker says a defect can cause debris to build up in the switch, causing it to overheat, melt, and potentially spark flames. 2.7 million vehicles in north america are affected including the corolla, camry, and rav4. they were produced between 2005 and 2010. no crashes have been reported. randy: right now, a u-mass medical school doctor is facing charges, accused of taking a picture of a woman in a bathroom stall. a clerk magistrate found probable cause to charge dr. marcus cooper.

into the wrong bathroom and was checking emails on his phone. he' s now on paid leave. emily: a college campus is on alert. police released this sketch of a man they say sexually assaulted a student at bridgewater state university. the attack happened near a garage on campus monday night. the 18-year-old victim met her attacker via social media and agreed to meet him monday night. that' s when the man assaulted her. police are now stepping up patrols. randy: a saudi national accused of posing as a girl online to seduce a danvers teen will be in court today. police say abdulrahim altalhi was behind an elaborate scheme to blackmail the girl into having sex and get her to recruit others to send him photos. altalhi who was attending college in indiana on a student visa was arrested in chicago last month as he returned to the u.s. emily: a hardwick couple is expected back in court today in a case of extreme child abuse. seven-year-old jack loiselle was

s home over the summer. the father, randall lints, and his girlfriend, alexandra chadwick, are charged with five felonies, including assault and battery of a child. a close call in lawrence after a chain reaction crash on i-495. this morning, a couple says they are lucky to be alive. >> i am amazed how much damage there is to this into no damage to me or my wife. emily: peter carro says he didn' t swerve when a flying tire came right at his family. the impact left his trailer its side. just seconds earlier, the tire had hit a car after it flew off a tractor trailer travelling in the opposite direction. you can see the bare axel where the tire should be. >> i think i am fortunate to be alive. i really think so. emily: we are waiting to hear from the company that owns the tractor-trailer. police are still trying to find out what caused that wheel to pop off. controversy over new breast

randy: newscenter5 on the opioid crisis. city council members in lowell want opioid education to be part of the school curriculum. the council voted unanimously yesterday to have a substance abuse committee put together a plan for how to incorporate opioid education into the system. the vote follows a new report highlighting 42 overdose deaths in lowell just this year. emily: on the health alert this morning, criticism over new controversial guidelines on breast cancer screenings.

the new recommendation -- women should get screened annually starting at age 45 instead of 40. but there' s some concern that would lead to insurance companies refusing coverage for mammograms before 45. dr. jean o' brien of lahey outpatient breast cancer center disagrees with the new recommendation. she says women should take control of their health. >> women needs to consult with they need to be their own emily: newscenter 5 also talked he served on the american cancer society subcommittee that suggested the new numbers. he insists these are just minimum recommendations. will take anything we can get. [laughter] cindy: a few mornings ago it was in the teens in the 20' s. now it is in the 60' s -- not bad. yesterday wasn' t bad either. we made it all the way up to 66 -- an above average day, the first we have had in several. we are kind of in this up and down weather pattern right now, and that will continue. we were up yesterday and we will be down today. a lot of cloud cover as well but we are back up again tomorrow, making a run toward the 70 degree mark coming up on thursday. this morning we are starting out with temperatures running in the upper 50' s to near 60, especially down near nantucket. there are a few 40' s showing up from nashua back to pittsburgh. you can see all the cloud cover out there -- there have even been a couple showers and parts of southeastern massachusetts,

you look off to the west and you see there are more showers working into western new york state. these may move toward us as we get toward later this morning. right through midday or early afternoon, there could be a couple sprinkles around. we have a stalled funnel boundary and it is positioned just of the south this afternoon putting us in the cooler air with a northeasterly wind. hard to push those temperatures up into the 60' s. highs mostly in the upper 50' s to lower 60' s under mostly cloudy skies and a risk of a passing sprinkle. temperatures hold pretty steady with the wind off the water. woods are at 59, and southeastern massachusetts 60' s. still around 50 degrees, not cooling off much, and look at this tomorrow -- wow, a run toward 70. we are shifting the wind to the

south and west. it puts us in the milder air, but it is for one day only. notice that cold front -- that will come through tomorrow night and friday and it will be blustery into much cooler. up and down with the temperatures and dry conditions for the most part heading into the weekend. the exception is later tomorrow as the cold front presses and with the little band of showers developing. not everybody will see these but by mid afternoon through the chance that you see a passing shower or two increases. the temperature trend is down, only in the mid 50' s. lower 30' s on saturday and recovering into the 50' s. milder for the second half of the weekend with a chance of a passing shower. up and down we go. let' s see how we are doing on the roads. olessa: so far we are in good shape. a live look at the pike.

let' s get over to the maps in check the rest which so far has some construction in place. also some road work here on 93 from the braintree split to route 24, then some more road work on 128 by great plane. once again as you pass the newton corner. north, no problem. trains and buses are expected to start on schedule. emily: paul ryan says he' s ready to run for house speaker, but only if some conditions are met. he tells house republicans he will be a candidate for the job, but only if he' s a consensus candidate not someone who wins the job with barely enough votes. he' s giving the republican caucus until friday to decide if they can unify behind him. utah congressman jason chaffetz, who was a candidate for speaker, has withdrawn, calling ryan the right person at the right time. secretary of state john kerry heads to europe and the middle east today. kerry will seek to calm escalating tensions between israelis and palestinians. it'

s unclear which countries kerry will visit specifically, but he will meet with several leaders, including the israeli prime minister, palestinian president, and the russian foreign minister. randy: the mbta' s fiscal control board will meet today. among the issues on the agenda, equipment maintenance ahead of the winter season. that' s as the t asks for help for its new makeover. the red, orange, and green lines are getting a facelift. the t releasing these images of possible new designs for the outside of new subway cars. you can vote for your favorite over the next two weeks. go to wcvb.com for a link. the first cars hit the tracks in 2017. emily: google and yahoo! are joining forces in a search partnership. the two companies have agreed to a three-year advertising pact. it means google will help power yahoo!' s search engine while providing it with ads. yahoo! will get a percentage of revenue from ads with paying google for word and image search results.

yahoo! already has a similar deal with microsoft' s bing. it does still needs final approval from the sec. asian stocks mixed this morning ahead of a european center bank policy meeting later this week. stock futures are higher this morning following tuesday' s losses. the dow falling 13 points to 17,217. randy: entrepreneurs getting their big break. it' s like "shark tank," but in boston. sam adams founder jim koch is behind the idea, searching for the next big thing. dozens of small business startups go before a panel of industry experts, and have two minutes to sell their idea. >> today, this is the cleanest and healthiest product in the mayonnaise category. >> we want to keep people from and luckily survived. randy: aveyo, an avocado mayonnaise, was the winner.

now goes to the finals in nyc. a check of the stories trending on the eyeopener now. emily: new york city is preparing for one big celebration. it will host world pride 2019. the massive celebration will be held in conjunction with stonewall 50, a commemoration of the 1969 stonewall uprising, which ignited the lgbt rights movement. the event will be held alongside new york city pride' s historic march and rally. randy: not paint, not oil, but bacteria was used to recreate a masterpiece. a microbiologist recreated van gogh' s "starry night" using bacteria in petri dishes. she submitted it in a competition that called on scientists to explore the beauty of infectious bacteria. emily: it is officially here -- "back to the future" day. october 21, 2015 is the day marty mcfly arrived in the 80' s film.

emily: breakings news overnight -- a new york city police officer killed in the line of duty. randy: right now, at least one suspect is behind bars. officer randolph holder was killed last night after police say he was shot in the head while chasing a suspect. the 33-year-old and his partners were responding to a report of shots fired in manhattan' s east harlem neighborhood. holder was a five-year veteran of the force. emily: an arrest in two rapes on nantucket. now, police want to know if there are more victims. david matterson is charged with kidnapping and rape in a 2008 attack on bartlett road and a september, 2014 rape on nearby roberts lane. nantucket police say matterson could be linked to more cases. the manhunt for a quincy couple wanted for bank robberies in three states is now focused back here in massachusetts. joseph and jenny carrier are suspected of robbing two banks in ludlow. they' re also wanted for heists

in maryland and florida. police believe they may be hiding somewhere in western massachusetts, where they have ties. randy: a second autopsy will be performed on the body of the little girl first known as baby doe. bella bond' s mother and her boyfriend were back in court yesterday as a judge approved the defense request to reexamine the child' s remains. her body was found on deer island in june. the medical examiner ruled bella' s death a homicide. michael mccarthy is charged with bella' s murder, her mother as an accessory after the fact. a felony charge will stand against a former new hampshire prep school student. a judge is refusing to throw out the conviction against 19-year-old owen labrie. he was convicted of using a computer to lure another student into a sexual encounter at st. paul' s school in concord. prosecutors say it was part of a senior contest. labrie faces up to 11 years in prison when he' s sentenced next week. emily: a daring leap on rough seas in alaska. a man, with his cat tucked

inside of his jacket, jumped onto a rescue ship as his sailboat was being tossed around, the coast guard capturing the dramatic video tuesday. the sailor says he lost both his rigging and rudder, and became stranded. the cubs down three games now in the nlcs. top of the third, the mets daniel murphy red hot, driving this one deep for the solo homerun. with runners on the corners, yoenis cespedes hits one to left field. kyle schwarber can' t make the play and david wright scores on the rbi single. mets take this one 5-2 the final. for the american league, the royals take a commanding lead in the series over the blue jays. they came right of the gate last night in game four, scoring four runs in the first inning. the jays came back with two of their own in the third, and that was all they would get. the royals continue to hammer away.

randy: it was one of the best games in world series history. 40 years ago today, red sox catcher carlton fisk slugged a homerun in the 12th inning in game six of the 1975 series. that gave boston a 7-6 win over the cincinnati reds, and forced a deciding game seven. the homerun is one of fisk' s best known moments in major league baseball. emily: and he said he felt like something good was going to happen. i think he was right. cindy: you should try forecasting the weather -- he has premonition. it has been a very changeable week, and we will continue with these temperature fluctuations. remember how cold we started, with well down to the south and that has lifted to the north. that has some milder air, yesterday we made it into the 60'

there is a weath er boundary stalling out and we do have a lot of cloud cover. it is temporarily pushing it to our south, with a northeasterly wind that will keep the temperatures down. i also want you to notice as you follow the front. accurate tour the great lakes there are couple showers and these may follow the front into our vicinity. can completely rule out a sprinkle today. otherwise, a whole lot of cloud cover. mostly cloudy day for you, with temperatures in the upper 50' s to lower 60' s, coolest in northeastern massachusetts. the front lifts north again tomorrow. it is only temporary -- the front goes by with a blast of cooler air as you had toward friday ended to the start of the upcoming weekend. best chance of showers will be later tomorrow and then again on sunday there could be a passing shower with another front. our patriots are playing down at
