was not hurt. good morning. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer. danielle: the winds are calm overnight. it is a cool start. temperatures will be warming up. we're at 20 in orange, springfield. 30 in jaffrey. this is dropping the last couple of hours. 34 worcester. 45 right now in boston and 50 degrees on nantucket. but as we go through the next 12 hours, in worcester county, for example, here's what's going to happen. we're going to see a lot of sunshine. notice temperatures holding in the upper 40's and i think that's where they'll stay at least through worcester county. however, boston will warm up into the lower 50's. some areas, maybe the south shore, could see the mid 50's but it is a chilly start out there. those winds out of the north and west keeping things cooler. clear skies on satellite and radar. high pressure dominates. the winds clockwise. that's why we have a northwest wind today anywhere from 5-10. then we're watching this area of

rain down here. this is associated with the remnants of hurricane patricia. all of this moisture is what's headed in our direction. so as we go through the next couple of days, we are dry but we turn very wet on wednesday into early thursday. we're going to talk more about the timing and the winds associated with it. first here's jeff. jeff: a busy commute this morning. most people are going on need a little extra time for the ride. even though the weather is good, you can see the heavy volume on the southeast expressway. you're upwards of 20 minutes for that ride from braintree to boston. let's see where the trouble spots are. the crash being reported on the southbound side of route 3 around treble cove road very heavily tied up back at 495. that will get worse beyond 495. ride. out there. 20 minutes for that commute. we're still working this scene on 24 northbound with the left lanes blocked before route 44. it's affecting route 140 and a big delay on 24 northbound for travelers there. down to the south very slow on expressway. even the top end of route 95 is a slow run.

back to you. breaking overnight. a hit-and-run driver. it happened on route 1 just after 11:00 last night. witnesses say the man was hit by a mercedes, but the description of the car was vague. the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition is not clear this morning. also breaking at this hour the death toll is rising after a coast of canada. tarantal is tracking new information as it comes in. erika: right now that death toll stands at five with one person still missing. how this tragedy happened is really a mystery as the conditions were clear and calm, but you can see here the boat just sunk. the crew made a mayday call late sunday about 12 miles off of tofino. that's on canada's west coast and popular for whale watching. the canadian military and coast guard responded and were able to rescue 21 people using boats and helicopters. the boat that went down was described the largest in the area.

waters can get very rough, but they were not rough sunday. witnesses saying the wind wasn't strong and the sun was out. canada's transportation safety board is investigating. emily: breaking details from the afghanistan region now. a powerful earthquake has hit that country. it was also felt in pakistan and india. no word on damage or injuries yet from the 7.7 magnitude quake. we will bring you new information as we get it. randy: right now investigators are narrowing in on what might have sparked an explosion that knocked a taunton home off its foundation. the fire marshal telling newscenter 5 this is a gas-related incident. the homeowner inside was able to escape. columbia gas crews are now inspecting that gas line. the explosion happened yesterday afternoon at this home on christine lane. firefighters say within 30 minutes it collapsed.

nearby shook rattling the nerves of neighbors. >> i heard a bang and felt my whole house shake. it was horrifying, horrifying. randy: the homeowner did tell a neighbor that she was worried about the gas and was checking a water heater. she was taken to a nearby hospital just to be checked out. a report focused on bella bond and state agencies who had knowledge of her home situation is due this week. governor baker ordered the review after the toddler was identified last month. the review due on wednesday will show just how much state agencies, including d.c.f., were involved with the girl's family. bella's body was discovered in june in a trash bag on deer island. her mother and her mother's boyfriend have been charged in her death. emily: right now donald trump is getting ready to rally support in new hampshire as things get even more heated on the campaign trail. on both sides. the eye's todd kazakiewich is live in atkinson with the early morning appearance. good morning, todd. todd: good morning, emily.

it certainly is an early morning rally that's set to begin in less than an hour from now, 7:00 and, as usual, the "business mogul turned candidate" is coming off a fresh controversy. republican rival ben carson is demanding an apology accusing trump of demonizing his faith with a snide remark. but trump told abc's george stephanopoulos fat chance of that. trump: i mean 7th day adventists, i don't know about it. i said exactly "i don't know about it." todd: meantime things are also heating up on the democratic side. this weekend, bernie sanders reminded voters in iowa that hillary clinton's lead in the polls is not a sure thing, saying she's lost before. the clock is certainly ticking. we're now under the 100-day mark until the first real test, the iowa caucus. hampshire, newscenter 5. emily: this morning, vice

not to run for president. biden saying in an interview that a conversation with the 11-year-old daughter of his son, beau, helped reaffirm that he should spend more time with family. beau biden died in may of a cancerous brain tumor. in the interview with "60 minutes", he stated again that delaying his decision meant he could not win. joe biden: couldn't win. i'll be very blunt. if i thought we could put together the campaign that our supporters deserved and our contributors deserved, i would have gone ahead and done it. emily: biden went on to deny rumors that he and hillary clinton don't get along. randy: the patriots undefeated this morning after a hard-fought win against the jets. this touchdown catch by danny amendola one of the plays helping the pats keep that 6-0 record. the 30-23 win over the jets not easy.

dropped passes a big problem for the pats yesterday at gillette. in all, the pats had 11 drops. speaking of 11, julian edelman on 3rd and 17 helping the pats get to 27. and here's gronk fighting for the tough yards. >> lot of challenges, took us a while, i thought we played better as the game went on. in the fourth quarter, we did a few different things and made some more plays. it was good to win. randy: up next for the pats, the dolphins on thursday. kickoff is at 8:25 at gillette. emily: police in bedford, new hampshire, are looking for the vandals who damaged a little league complex. it happened sometime over the weekend. there is thousands of dollars in damage including spray-painted expletives on the walls and broken windows. a fire extinguisher was sprayed in the inside of the complex. so far, no arrests.

u-local section of our website. erika: it was chilly that morning. danielle: it was chilly. it's been cold pretty much all weekend although yesterday was a little milder by afternoon. today unfortunately though chilly but dry but rain is coming. so we really do need the rain. let's talk about it. the rain impact on the way up on wednesday. in fact, it will be very high especially wednesday afternoon after lunchtime. through overnight hours. and then into thursday chances go back down by thursday afternoon but in the morning still leftover showers. this is all associated with the remnants of hurricane patricia. you can see them down to the south right now. and this is slowly going to make its way towards us. but first high pressure is dominating our weather. we really want to welcome that rain in because if you look at this area in tan, you see here, this is areas under a moderate drought. since january 1, we are down near eight inches of rain in boston and down near 7.5 inches

looking for that rain. we could see one to two inches from this system but for today it's all about the temperatures. we are on the cool side of things especially worcester. 34. 28 springfield. 38 in concord. 45 boston. and right now it's even 50 degrees on nantucket. for today, we're going to warm up into the upper 40's in worcester, low 50's in boston. and lower to mid 50's on the cape and then tonight with clear skies and those winds out of the north we droch down into the 20's and low 0's. you'll need the coats tomorrow as well as this morning. and then tomorrow the wind shifts to the south. as it does, temperatures start to moderate a little bit more into the mid 50's so here are those remnants of patricia. they get closer to us by tuesday night. really it's not until wednesday morning after 10:00 we start to see those showers push in. once they do, those winds are really going to pick up out of the south and east. you're going to notice them. the main impact again from this

coastal flooding looks good at this point. the thunder looks relatively low. we are dry monday and tuesday. the rain enters the forecast on wednesday. i do want to talk about thursday because thursday we actually have another home game. the patriots are taking on the miami dolphins and it looks like that thursday night game should be okay because the showers come to an end. temperatures are actually mild in the upper 50's for the football game so the weekend is looking chilly. this morning. danielle: i can only imagine. jeff: aate lot of traffic out there. crashes are affecting things as well. solar glare will be cropping up later on. look at that heavy volume expressway. that's just volume. no crashes. nothing slowing it down. a long ride all the way up between braintree to boston, about a 30-minute commute for you there. let's go to the maps and see those trouble spots. the big problem has been route 24 northbound. before route 44 there's a crash. they had shut down the roadway entirely to clear away the debris. there's guardrail damage.

that's affecting the top end of route 140 so a slow run for 24 before you even get to 495. still dealing with that crash on route 3 southbound around treble cove road. that has it backed up to 495 and a bit beyond. a slow run for travelers there. it's slow get to go the expressway. talked about that long run there. randy, back to you. randy: jeff, thank you. an inside look at a high-stakes raid in iraq. american and kurdish forces storming an isis compound to save hostages. the new video shows captives streaming out of the darkness, hands up, feet bare, and clothes bloodied. troops cleared room after room thursday rescuing about 70 men who the pentagon says faced execution. about 20 isis fighters were killed. one american delta team member, master sergeant joshua wheeler, also died in the crossfire. >> this american did what i'm proud that americans do in that situation. he ran to the sound of the gun.

is the first american killed in combat with isis. military leaders say the circumstances of the raid are unique and do not mean american forces are taking part in combat in iraq. the woman arrested after allegedly crashing into a parade crowd in oklahoma now faces murder charges. she'll have her first court appearance this morning. four people were killed and dozens more injured when adacia chambers's car plowed through a homecoming crowd in stillwater, the home of oklahoma state university. her lawyer says the 25-year-old may suffer from mental illness. emily: topping economic headlines this morning. new overnight general motors avoids a strike by the united auto workers union. the company reached a tentative contract deal with the union before a midnight deadline. union leaders will meet in detroit this week to vote on the deal. if approved, it will go to the union for a vote. more volkswagon managers are being punished for not sounding the alarm on the company's emissions scandal. ten executives or engineers have now been suspended as the investigation finds they might

have known about the cheating but failed to speak up about it. in september, v.w. admitted that cars with diesel engines were programmed to trick emissions tests. asian stocks rose today after china cut interest rates. right now, dow futures are down on wall street. that's after u.s. stocks rose friday following strong earnings reports from big tech names. randy: new research is out and experts say these foods will help you lose the most weight. yogurt, seafood, skinless chicken and nuts top the list. researchers say the more people ate of these foods, the less weight they gained. they found diets high in protein were the most effective for keeping the pounds off. also of note there was no difference on the scale for those who ate low-fat dairy compared to those who ate full-fat dairy. a little guy gets a big scare

we're never ready for winter but it is on its way. i do want to talk about these temperatures because we are in the 20's in orange, also in springfield. 30 degrees right now in keene. mid 30's in worcester. mid 40's though in boston and 50 on nantucket. now over the next 12 hours in boston, temperatures are going to warm up into the lower 50's. notice there's a lot of sunshine. the big difference today is that wind direction coming out of the north and west. so even with a lot of sunshine, we're only going to warm up into the upper 40's and lower 50's. so again it's a dry forecast. high pressure really dominates our weather today. but and high pressure the winds going clockwise. that's why we are so cool. then we are watching this area of rain down here. patricia. all of this is headed in our direction and will give us some rain. going to talk more about that in just a second. kids will need a jacket for the bus stop this morning. on the ride home it's sunny. jeff: good morning.

the roadway is closed down. this is the scene northbound. it's before route 44. point. it was initially reported as a left lane crash. let me go to the maps. we'll show you how big those delays are this morning t crash 44. it is tied up all the way to route 79, almost back to fall river now. route 140 the top of it is very heavily tied up as well making there. route 3 still working that crash treble cove road. that's leaving traffic slow and very heavy on 93 southbound. it's almost 30 minutes to get from 495 to 128. metro west looks pretty tough all the way from 495 right through to framingham. we're dealing with very heavy volume this morning. emily. emily: jeff, thank you. breaking overnight. after a whale watch boat sank off the coast of vancouver. canadian authorities say one person is still missing. witnesses say the weather was clear and the water calm at the time of the tragedy. randy: also breaking overnight. saugus police are searching for

a hit-and-run driver. it happened on route 1 just after 11:00 last night. witnesses say the man was hit by a mercedes, but the description of the car was vague. it's not clear how badly he was hurt. emily: right now investigators are closing in on what might have sparked this huge house explosion in taunton. the fire marshal tells us the incident on christine lane was gas-related. the homeowner was able to escape unhurt. randy: right now a woman is prepared to face a judge accused in the shooting death of this man, her uncle. family members still trying to figure out how it happened. emily: the eyeopener's sera congi is live outside the courthouse in west roxbury where the suspect is expected in just hours. sera: emily and randy, we are learning more this morning about the victim and the suspect. family members saying they were once very close. 49-year-old clyde francis was shot in the head saturday afternoon at a relative's home in hyde park. his niece 36-year-old yvonne lewis is accused of pulling the

trigger and then driving off. she was found and arrested five hours later in peabody. civilian employee. her family tells the globe that after she left the department in drugs. she was reportedly angry and acting out on saturday. and her uncle went to hyde park to calm her down. now we expect to hear more details about what happened here at lewis' arraignment today at west roxbury district court. sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: thank you. a dorchester man will face a judge today, following an attack on a woman in the fenway. police say wayne barber tackled a woman early sunday morning in an alley off of park drive. he allegedly threatened to kill her with a knife. the victim was slashed but was able to get away. police arrested barber a few streets away. (bell tolling) randy: hundreds gather to remember a husband and father lost at sea.

member on the "el faro." the cargo ship disappeared off the bahamas during hurricane joaquin. a special memorial took place yesterday at massachusetts maritime academy. the 42-year-old kingston man was an officer and chief engineer on the ship. his wife speaking at the service sharing memories and heartache. wife: we all love jeffrey so much and we'll miss him terribly, but he will never totally leave us. he will live on in our hearts, in our three beautiful children. randy: jeffrey mathias's parents made a special point of thanking their community. they said it's friends and neighbors who have gotten them through three very difficult weeks. emily: new this morning. federal prosecutors want more information from former probation commissioner, john o'brien. they want him to give the names of lawmakers who might have benefited from the rigged hiring process that led to his conviction. in exchange for his testimony, "the globe" reports he would be granted immunity. however, he could be prosecuted if he lies to the grand jury or

refuses to answer questions. o'brien is appealing his conviction. a raw and emotional project to help homeless people get back to their families. the eye's erika tarantal is here with one man's mission to reunite loved ones. erika: this is the brainchild of a san francisco man. kevin adler created a television series called "miracle messages." he tours the country recording videos of homeless people and uploads them to social media. right now, he's in new hampshire. the hope is that family members will see the videos and reunite with their loved ones. and he's already had success. >> someone who is just homeless joe or jane to you or i could be the most important person in the world to that one person who is looking for them. that's what motivates this. erika: in addition to new hampshire, adler has been to his next stop will be randy: a fisherman makes a nail-biting rescue of a toddler and it's all caught on camera. emily: his quick work to save a little boy's life, ahead.

tonight will be a chilly night. we're dry also on tuesday due to high pressure. temperatures only warm into the mid 50's. then we watch the rain chances go up as we get towards wednesday morning. in fact, wednesday we may start out dry with some clouds but showers enter the forecast mainly after lunchtime. and then become numerous and heavy with also some very strong winds associated with those remnants so we're talking about heavy rain, gusty winds on the high side, and there is a slight chance for some minor coastal flooding and even some thunderstorms because temperatures are going to moderate as well with this system. so 52 today. 54 on tuesday. and by wednesday 60 degrees. now how are those roads? i know there's an accident, jeff. jeff: there are crasheses out there. a slow ride. a lot of people will be late for work this morning. a massive delay that extends from fall river all the way up towards route 44. they're clearing away the remnants of a crash just before route 44. look at that back-up. huge.

we'll show you other slow areas on the maps. 93 southbound is slow from andover all the way in towards the city. no break to that traffic slow. still working a crash scene on route 3 southbound around treble cove road that has traffic slowed from 495 so a tough run for travelers there. look at the turnpike from 495 most of the way to framingham starts to loosen up a little bit heading toward route 128. that's a slow ride as well. 43 minutes. one delay on the mbta on the needham branch and the orange line has delays as well. emily. emily: jeff, thank you. breaking overnight. saugus police are searching for a hit-and-run driver. it happened on route 1 just after 11:00 last night. witnesses say the man was hit by a mercedes, but the description of the car was vague. the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition is not clear this morning. randy: also breaking. the death toll rising after a whale watch boat capsizes. emily: the eyeopener's erika tarantal has the new information we're learning right now. erika: at this hour one person is still missing, five people are confirmed dead. and there are so many questions as the conditions were described

completely sank. the crew made a mayday call late sunday about 12 miles off of tofino on vancouver island's west coast. the canadian military and coast guard were able to rescue 21 people. the vessel that went down was operated by a long established company. locals say the waters can get very rough where the boat was, but they were not rough sunday and the wind wasn't strong. canada's transportation safety board is investigating. emily: we are following breaking details from the afghanistan region. a powerful earthquake has hit that country. it was also felt in pakistan and india. there's no word on damage or injuries yet from the 7.5 magnitude quake. we'll bring you new information as we get it. todd: a large crowd is gathering right now here in atkinson, new hampshire, for an early morning donald trump rally set to begin at 7:00 this morning. trump continues to lead the field of g.o.p. candidates across the country and here in new hampshire. he told cnn on sunday that if

elected he would be, quote, a great unifier, although controversy continues to surround his campaign. republican rival dr. ben carson is now demanding an apology after a comment that trump made about carson's religion. 7th day adventist. dr. carson took offense. trump says he has nothing to apologize for. reporting in atkinson, new hampshire, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: a former boston police civilian employee will face a judge today for allegedly killing her uncle. 49-year-old clive francis was shot in the head saturday afternoon in a hyde park home. his niece, 36-year-old yvonne lewis, is charged with murder. family members say the two had always been close but their relationship was damaged after lewis got involved with drugs. loved ones also say before the shooting saturday lewis was angry and her uncle went to the home to calm her down. she'll be arraigned here at the west roxbury district court today.

congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: the fire marshal says the fire that destroyed this home in taunton is gas related. the home exploded sunday afternoon. the woman inside was able to escape. the explosion was so powerful it rocked nearby homes. >> she was a beautiful person inside and out. emily: family and friends come together to remember a rochester, new hampshire, teen who died of a possible drug overdose. 17-year-old eve tarmey was found dead on october 17 in a motel room. she was staying in the motel with her mother and her mother's boyfriend. randy: the controversial issue of physician-assisted suicide will once again be debated at the state house. the joint committee on public health will take up the matter tomorrow. it was narrowly rejected by voters in 2012. the new legislation requires two doctors to assess a patient before any medication is prescribed. the "lowell sun" reports a patient would then have to see a counselor to see if their judgement has been impaired. emily: workers with boston's election department are going door to door alerting more than

"the globe" reports this is tied to an address error for voters in nine neighborhoods. officials were made aware of the glitch in august. those residents affected have been correctly re-assigned. randy: a providence firefighter is recovering this morning after a hit-and-run saturday that left him seriously injured. he was saved by members of his own fire station. matthew gallant was heading home from a night out with friends when he was struck head on by another driver who smashed into his pick up truck. firefighters responded to the scene. they used the jaws of life to free gallant taking 30 minutes to pull him out. suspect. he is now a wanted man. emily: caught on camera the dramatic rescue of a migrant toddler off the coast of turkey. a fisherman grabbed the 18-month-old boy and sprung into action getting the water out of his lungs and stomach. suffering from hypothermia, they wrapped him in a blanket to keep him warm until the coast guard arrived. he was taken to the hospital. doctors say he is in good condition. randy: this morning, vice president joe biden is giving more insight into his decision not to run for president. biden saying in an interview

11-year-old daughter of his son, beau, helped reaffirm that he should spend more time with family. beau biden died in may of a in the interview, he stated again that delaying his decision emily: complaints against republican presidential candidate chris christie after he broke a quiet car rule on an amtrak train. passengers say the new jersey his cell phone in the train car sunday. quickly when he realized he was in the quiet car. a spokesman says he entered by mistake. randy: gas prices continue to plummet at the pump. the average price has dropped 10 cents over the past two weeks to $2.24 a gallon for regular. and prices have fallen 63 cents over the past 19 weeks. industry analysts say the slide could end if crude costs remain close to current levels. emily: new research suggests it may be ok for women to eat

during labor. for years, it's been considered dangerous to eat or drink during labor because food and liquid could be inhaled especially under general anesthesia. some researchers now say the rules are outdated because of advancements in anesthesia. the american society of anesthesiologists found that most women today would benefit from a light meal during labor. randy: a lockdown is now lifted at a north carolina college after a student was shot. authorities at north carolina central university sent out an active shooter alert around 11:15 last night. the "all clear" was given just before midnight. the victim is expected to be okay. no word on any arrests. longtime nba coach flip saunders has died of cancer. saunders had won more than 650 games in nearly two decades of coaching. he was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma in june and took a leave of absence from his team, the minnesota timberwolves, in september. he died sunday at the age of 60.

this is just evidence of heavier volume we're dealing with. let's go to the maps because we have trouble spots to continue to talk about. very heavy on 93 southbound from 495 straight down in towards the city. that's coffin jetion the whole way. an earlier crash on route 3 has cleared away. it's left over slow traffic in chelmsford. the turnpike very slow coming in to framingham. the trouble spot the big one we've had has been on route 24 on the northbound side. the crash in raynham is off the roadway but it's left very slow traffic from fall river on up toward that situation. one delay on the mbta that's the orange line. downtown. that's leaving things slow danielle. snarch the weather looks pretty good today. temperaturewise though we'll be cooler than normal. we should be around 58 degrees. 52 will be our high. warming up to 54 on tuesday. 60 by wednesday. and 66 by thursday. so milder days ahead. a gorgeous sunrise over boston. it is 45 currently. the winds out of the west-northwest. at about 10. today's highs anywhere from the upper 40's to low to mid 50's. with tons of sunshine. tonight with clear skies,
