he was in a lot of pain but he jumped out of his car and tried to save that mother and her two children. >> i said oh my god, oh my god oh my god. i lost it john: already writhing in pain from the crash he just survived in this mangled mercedes, robespierre lafleur didn't hesitate running to the car that had just been crushed by the 45-ton cement truck. >> i was trying to help the mother. when i touch her and i said mom are you ok are you ok? john: he could tell she didn't survive the violent impact, but then he saw two young children trapped in the back seat. >> i saw the little boy still in the car seat so i get the boy out. he was coming in and out of consciousness. i hold the baby quite a while. then while i was getting 2-year-old out. i saw 8-month old. he was so crushed against the

john: first responders finally the 8-month-old from the horrific wreckage, critically details. he and the mother were both traveling eastbound on route 20 drifted across the center line. >> she lost control. the car back. she went onto the opposite way. john: her chevy cavalier his mercedes and by some miracle he and his son were spared, but that claimed the life of a young mother. >> we are ok. our prayer goes to her family and the babies i hope they make it. john: before he left the hospital today, that man went to go check on that baby. police tell us that 8-month-old boy is on life support tonight. heather: breaking news in pembrook tonight where police have investigate violent threats

against community middle school. the student who made those threats has not been suspended. the student will undergo a mental health vegas evaluation. ed: concern among residents of a chelsea apartment building damaged by a flood. what is the problem? reporter: residents describe living here as a nightmare. flooding damage compounding on-going maintenance problems. without elevator service for two days, chelsea fire actually had to station a crew inside in case of an emergency. reporter: 84 year-old florence landgraf climbing nine flights of stairs to her apartment. >> something should basically be done. have the stuff fixed whatever. reporter: only one of the two elevators in her building is in service. and that one broke down again yesterday. firefighters had to rescue people trapped inside.

>> they came in 'cause a lady she was pregnant. she was hysterical and panicking. reporter: jill goodwin is on the top floor. 11 flights up. >> i also have to wear a mask because we were told they found mold and asbestos after the flood. reporter: a fourth of the units were flooded out six weeks ago after someone intentionally opened a stand-pipe on the sixth floor. every time the remaining elevator breaks down, fire crews move in this case of an emergency. >> a complete nightmare. these are very serious issues that the tenants are facing. reporter: tenants were promised repairs would get done in a couple of weeks. the construction supervisor for the building's owners out of new york, blames the insurance company for halting the work. >> my machine for breathing is in that room. reporter: roberto rodriguez is a cancer survivor still living in a hotel room, without his oxygen pump. >> in the hotel there have been two power outages already. and i have asphyxiated myself

two times almost. reporter: a bit of good news tonight. that broken elevator was finally fixed about an hour ago. the owner's rep said with the second elevator knocked out from the flood, this one is just overused. still he assures that everything inspectors from h.u.d., may be they making a site visit tomorrow. heather: also new tonight. police are searching for these together to rob an elderly woman. investigators say the man distracted the 89-year-old victim. the female suspect took her wallet from the purse inside her shopping cart. they took off in a silver four-door hatchback. ed: it's official. the nfl is appealing the ruling that gave tom brady a deflategate victory. nfl lawyers say it is "unfathomable" that a judge decided to lift brady's four-game suspension. the league wants an appeals court to reinstate the punishment. oral arguments in the case won't

happen before february, so the season will be over before there's any chance of a ruling. heather: a live look at the boston skyline now. temperatures are dipping into the 30's. in fact, ahear a freeze warning has been put in place, harvey. is that right? harvey: yeah, for the cape and the island. if you look at the temperatures in downtown boston, it is 45. all the rural low-lying areas are really cold already, in the 20's and low 30's. a lot of frost is already forming. 27 on the vineyard . in many cases this is the first sign that it is that cold on the cape. a freeze warning is in effect on the cape. the rest of the areas already pretty much experienced it. tomorrow there will be sunshine and some filtered clouds during the afternoon. an ok day after that frosty cold start. high temperatures will make it into the low 50's. changes are coming for the middle of the week.

while it is clear now, we have the remnants of patricia. ed: it is the news that has everyone thinking twice about what's in their refrigerator. processed meats from bacon to cold cuts linked to cancer. but how much is really too much. newscenter 5's mary saladna is digging into that for us tonight, mary? what have you found? reporter: according to the new study, a little processed meat goes a long way. in fact, if this is your lunch, you have already entered the danger zone. the foods so many of us eat every day. bacon, hot dogs and lunchmeat all now classified in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos. they can cause cancer according to the world health organization. the w.h.o. advisory committee red meat is probably carcenogenic. the report, based on an analysis of more than 800 studies, says simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day, can

increase the risk of colon cancer by 18%. by the way, that 50 grams equals about 1.8 ounces of lunchmeat. the typical deli sandwich has about than 4.5 ounces of meat. this doctor of mass general has spent years studying the link, he says before you swear off bacon and burgers understand even that smoked turkey can pose a risk because how the meat is prepared matters a lot. >> because it is the processing that tends to bring out the carcinogens that increase the risk of colon caner. >> for the record, frying and grilling over charcoal also releases more carcinogens. here at savenors, boston's legendary butcher shop no one is sweating the new study. here there are plenty of fruits and veggies to round out that healthy mentality formed decades ago. >> the one thing i learned from all my years working with julia child, the one thing i learned

heather: a teenager is killed when his car crashes into a utility pole. 17-year-old alex vitale was alone in the car last night when it crashed on summit street. vitale was taken to a nearby hospital, but did not survive. the school community issued a statement saying they are praying for his family. police now say they have found the car they were looking for in connection with a deadly hit and run on route 1 in saugus. so far no arrest. the victim, a 33-year-old man, was hit late last night while walking along the highway. ed: a bizarre scene in roxbury. as a murder suspect had to be dragged into court. yvonne lewis is accused of shooting and killing her uncle clive francis in hyde park saturday. when officers carried her into court, she stayed hunched over and refused to speak. family members say they don't know why lewis shot her uncle. she was ordered to a twenty day mental health evaluation.

preventable. tonight investigators say the woman who lived inside the home sparked the explosion. the state fire marshal says the hot water heater when she shut-off valve. that sent gas flowing into the home causing the explosion. several frantic neighbors called 9-1-1. >> hi, there is a house explosion. the house. >> how do you know they are in the house? >> i don't know they are in the house. >> we're on our way. heather: the fire chief in taunton says complicated house repairs are best left to the pros. ed: boston university has been chosen to receive the archives of mayor tom menino. the school made the announcement today. the menino family is donation a collection of artifacts from the former mayor's 30 years in public service. the collection will be made available to anyone interested in learning about his work. mayor menino was boston's longest serving mayor.

most of our outlying areas are near freezing. frost is developing. it can be some pretty thick frost. if your car is outside in the outlying area, you might be doing some scraping. allow just a little extra time for that. these are your temperatures to start your day tomorrow. temperature also move into the 50's. there will be a fair amount of sun. a little bit filtered later in day as clouds come in. nice and clear around the region now but we go to our south and what do we see? moisture that represents the remnants of what was once a very powerful hurricane patricia. some of that moisture is going to make it our way. here is how things go in a general sense. high pressure over us now. the remnants of the storm begins to move north and east. with it comes the moisture. not tomorrow, not tomorrow night but not even wednesday morning. it looks like the wet weather gets in around the evening commute wednesday. a little bit sooner if you're
