i'm gety of that myself earlier. i'm glad you guys missed it. it's also sunday, november 1. going on toss things over to danielle vollmar with a look at our forecast. danielle: good morning, frank and antoinette. some showers in parts of the area's doorstep. you can see through southern new hampshire, western massachusetts , moving in to worcester county now, from greenfield down to amherst to springfield, all this is shifting to the east. right now it's holding together so there could be some showers in the city of worcester within the next hour. also some showers moving across buzzards bay and it will be moving towards the cape and the islands as we head through the next couple of hours. it's associated with an area of low pressure so all this energy moving through right now. once we get through the morning, in the afternoon, we shouud see some breaks of sunshine. those breaks of sunshine should lead to warmer temperatures. starting out in the mid 40 in fitchburg, low 50's in taunton. mid 50's already on the cape and the islands. as we go through the next 12 hours in worcester county, we are going to see cloudy skies

but breaks of sunshine through the afternoon. temperatures in worcester holding in the mid to upper 50's but lower 60's elsewhere. a major warm-up is coming. we'll talk about when we could see the 70's in the seven-day forecast ahead. frank? frank: all right, thanks a lot, danielle. breaking news right now. on the cape actually. flames engulf a boat docked in north falmouth. as you can see the fire destroyed the fishing boat named "good grief." the flames sparked about 5:30 this morning. firefighters used foam to keep the fire from spreading. no one was hurt. a cause is under investigation. antoinette: flames spark inside a townhouse complex in danvers overnight. you can see the fire shooting through the roof. firefighters worked to put out the fire quickly. everyone made it out safely, but two dogs are unaccounted for right now. damage is extensive. frank: right now navy searchers say they have located the wreckage of the missing cargo ship "el faro." the teams made the discovery

location. the "el faro" disappeared during the fury of hurricane joaquin 33 crew members were on board the ship; three with ties to newscenter 5's pam cross tells us today an unmanned, 15,000 feet down to the wreckage. pam: the wreckage of the "el faro" believed to be 15,000 feet down. a search team working for the navy on saturday using sonar equipment detected what experts think is the cargo ship, saying if so, it's in an upright position and in one piece. the "el faro" disappeared october 1 during hurricane joaquin. it was off the coast of the bahamas. three people linked to massachusetts were aboard. mariette wright, a crew member from the south coast whose mom said she lived for the sea. winthrop native keith griffen was a mass maritime graduate. he was first engineer on the "el faro." (bell tolling) just last week relatives held a

memorial for jeffrey mathias. engineer and father of three. there were 33 people on board the container ship when it left the port of jacksonville headed if the vessel is confirmed to be the "el faro," searchers will try and recover the voyage data experts say that could take weeks. i'm pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: right now, isis claiming responsibility for a deadly airliner crash in the egyptian desert. 224 people killed on a russia at this hour, no indication of what brought the plane down. the black boxes have been recovered, and russia denies the claims by isis. as richard cantu reports, there is no dispute about the scale of the human tragedy. richard: the russian passenger jet went down here in this remote region of egypt's sinai peninsula after some 20 minutes in the air. there were no survivors among the 224 passengers and crew aboard. all but three were russian. egypt's prime minister visited

the crash site. responders searched for remains, and ambulances transported bodies to the morgue. the chartered flight was operated by metrojet, an airline based in moscow. it took off from this airport in the resort city of sharm el-sheikh bound for st. petersburg. according to an egyptian official as it was reaching 30,000 feet, the pilot radioed the aircraft was having technical problems and wanted to land. it vanished from radar shortly after. announcer: flight 9267 to sharm el-sheikh is delayed. richard: in saint petersburg, grief and disbelief as relatives learned their loved ones were lost. "i'm waiting for the person i love," said one. taking chances. both announced they would immediately stop flying over egypt's sinai peninsula for safety reasons. frank: only on 5. a plane makes an emergency landing at beverly airport. the small aircraft was experiencing issues with its landing gear saturday. it touched down safely on the grass. the pilot was not injured. the incident is under investigation. crews battle a four-alarm fire in fitchburg. it broke out at a three-story residence on granite street around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. everyone inside was able to get out safely. there were no reported injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. antoinette: this morning police in holliston are searching for the suspects who stole three puppies from a kennel. it happened friday night at "pick a pup" on concord street. the alarm system sounded; but when police arrived, the suspects were gone. the owner is asking for the public's help. on facebook he asked people to keep an eye out on sites like craigslist for the pups. anyone with information is asked to contact police. frank: new this morning. the somerville teen once accused of assaulting a teammate at

sports camp is now suing the city. the case against galileo mondol was dropped in april. prosecutors had claimed the 19-year-old took part in a hazing ritual back in 2013 while at the camp in the berkshires. mondol denied the accusations. his lawsuit against the city alleges several leaders, including mayor joe curtatone, engaged in a witch hunt to have him charged. he's seeking $1 million. antoinette: new concerns this morning about the rapid growth of casino gambling here in the northeast. the hollywood casino in bangor, maine, got off to a great start but is now demanding a property tax cut break now that business has slowed down. casino observers here in massachusetts tell "the globe" they expect a similar situation could happen here if the plainridge park casino continues to see a decline in its revenue. right now, plainridge pays about $1.5 million a year in local property taxes and has not asked for a tax reduction. frank: massachusetts is getting two new courts specifically

veterans in legal trouble. veterans treatment courts will start hearing cases in holyoke and lawrence this week. the courts only deal with veterans charged with misdemeanor and minor felony charges who pleaded guilty. under the voluntary program, instead of going to jail, the veterans enter a heavily supervised program where they get the services they need for substance abuse and mental health issues. antoinette: the new york city marathon is today, and more than 22 runners will take part in youngest victim of the boston marathon attack. team m-r-8 has raised more than $60,000 while training for the marathon. $10,000 over its original goal. team m-r-8 was formed in 2014 to help marathon runners raise money to advance the charity's mission by funding education, athletics, and community activities. frank: we all remember last year's brutal winter-- a nightmare for many homeowners. antoinette: ahead this morning the steps you can take now to protect your home this time

often. consider buying a roof rake now before they sell out, and use it often once the snow starts. larry: as soon as you can. the way the snow came last year, every other day, it would be great if you could use it in between snows. emily: next, check all your windows. make sure the storm windows are down and the upper screen is locked. larry: it's not about security. it's about making the window nice and tight. emily: keep out the cold? larry: keep out the cold, bingo. emily: if you use your fireplace often, consider getting it professionally cleaned before that first fire. and also have a pro come check your heating system. maintenance now could save you hundreds later. antoinette: that was emily riemer reporting. she also leaed this is also a great time to check all your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. test them, vacuum out any dust, and replace the batteries as needed. frank: great advice. but i'm hoping we don't need a roof rake or a snow blower.

antoinette: sorry we had to remind about winter this morning. danielle: we're on the way up. the warming trend is on the way. temperatures today starting today in the 60's. by the end of the week, the 70's. now it does come with a little bit of rain today. but we will take that because we could really use the rain. so i do have a medium chance of some rain. we've already seen some this morning in some locations. that's really the trend as we go through the morning hours so we have hit-or-miss spot showers out there on radar. some of them moving through parts of southern new hampshire. you saw some earlier this morning too. others through worcester county. some even collecting here along the south shore, moving towards the cape and the islands. some of this is actually finally making it to the ground. some of this has not yet made it to the ground as it's raining in the upper atmosphere, evaporating because we have such dry air out ahead of this. it's all associated with an area of low pressure as well as this upper-level low. it's pin wheeling this moisture at us. so we are going to keep the clouds in the forecast and the

showers at least through the morning hours. once we get towards lunchtime, watch this future cast. you'll see what will happen. through. this might be a little overdone, i think. but we will have hit-or-miss showers through about lunchtime. at. the skies are beginning to break apart a little bit in terms of the cloud cover. we will call it mostly cloudy becoming partly sunny by afternoon. now through the afternoon, there may be one or two showers, but that is mainly up through southern new hampshire as well as southern vermont. other than that, i think everybody else is dry. so feel free to plan to do anything you were going to do outside. you can see rainfall amounts have not been that impressive. that's the trend through the morning hours and into the afternoon. only picking up 2/100ths of an inch of rain in orange. we could really use the rain. you notice most of this area in the tan color under a moderate drought. boston down over 7.5 inches now for the year. worcester down over six inches

so we are looking for the rain but a dry forecast is in store as we head through the workweek. we're also warming up. by thursday and friday, we could be near record warmth. i know everybody is looking forward to that. temperatures today only going to warm up into the upper 50's, low 60's because i think we're going to hold on to the clouds a little bit longer today. tonight though the skies are going to clear out. the winds calm down just a touch. temperatures through the merrimack valley in the low 40's. upper 40's boston. low 50's on the cape and the islands. and then tomorrow a lot of sunshine. it's a dry forecast and temperatures once again in the upper 50's and lower 60's for highs. we're going to continue to warm up as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. the big trend with this is basically the jetstream. it is really pushing and lifting to the north allowing for the mild conditions so we're mild on wednesday with high temperatures in the upper 60's.

friday, notice we rebound even more, into the lower 70's. our record high temperatures could be in contention on thursday as we have a record high of 73 in worcester and 79 in boston. and then there's a chance for some showers on friday. that will pull temperatures back down over the weekend. hey, enjoy the warm week. frank and antoinette. antoinette: 70's, danielle, thank you. time right now is 8:17. stories we're following right now. frank: at least nine people are dead in an violent attack at a police say islamic extremists attacked the hotel in the capital of mogadishu. a suicide bomber detonated a car with explosives at the gate, and then gunmen on foot opened fire. al-shabab, the islamic extremist rebels waging an insurgency against somalia's u.n.-backed government, claimed responsibility for the attack. antoinette: tragedy in new york city this halloween. three people were killed when an out-of-control car slammed into a group of trick-or-treaters. one of the victims was a ten-year-old girl. several people were also hurt

including a three-year-old girl. this happened just before 5:00 last night in the morris park neighborhood of the bronx. police believe the driver hit another car before it lost control and jumped the curb plowing into the crowd. so far, no charges have been filed. frank: a recall for some honda drivers this morning. the automaker is recalling some of its 2016 crv's. at issue? a problem with takata air bags that could rupture. honda says only 30 of the s.u.v.'s were sold before dealers were told to stop sales. takata air bag problems have affected about 19 million cars made by a dozen different manufacturers. antoinette: health departments on the west coast are investigating ecoli cases linked to chipotle restaurants. at least 22 people in the portland, oregon, area and in washington got sick after eating at the popular mexican food chain. several of them had to be hospitalized. chipotle confirms six restaurants are involved. all were immediately shut down. chipotle is now working with health officials to find the

once they do, we should see some breaks of sunshine. we really do need the rain though even though we're only picking up maybe 1/100th of an inch of rain in most locations because for the month of october we were down over two inches of rain. for the year we're down over 7.5 inches of rain. we just funnished out the month pretty warm. as we go through the next couple of days temperatures really warm up. by tuesday mid 60's. frank. frank: thanks a lot, danielle. thousands celebrated halloween in salem this weekend. it is the witch city's signature holiday. children and adults took part in the fun. of course, everyone was in costume. >> we're going ape. this is salem, the halloween capital of the world. reporter: what are you dressed up as this year? >> a vampire. reporter: are you a scary vampire or a nice vampire. >> a nice and scary vampire. >> everyone in costume having fun. antoinette: of course, first responders were in on the action making sure everyone had a good but safe time. police set up towers to stay

google, asking the federal aviation administration for permission to test drones for deliveries and other business purposes. in the eyes of many drone hobbyists and entrepreneurs, the sky's the limit when it comes to the use of drones from aerial photography to drone racing, from the delivery of emergency supplies to the delivery of that "must have right now" consumer product. there is much potential for fun and efficiency. there are also threats to safety and privacy. according to the u.s. department of transportation, the f.a.a. receives daily reports of potentially unsafe drone operations. pilot sightings of drones doubled between 2014 and 2015. other incidents include a drone crashing at the u.s. open and, most recently, a drone carrying drugs and hacksaw blades crashing into an oklahoma prison. so last week's announcement by the u.s. department of transportation and the f.a.a. to establish a drone registration process seems like a logical and much-needed next step. the wild west days of drone use are quickly coming to an end.

single-car crash. reid: roadside sorrow melts into tears as classmates of a teenager killed here last night leave behind flowers at the scarred base of this tree. madeline lamson was alone when the car she was driving violently smashed into the tree just before midnight. >> there was a big, big boom. i looked out the window. there was a big fire over there. reid: witnesses tried to pull the 17-year-old from her car, but the resulting fire pushed them back. just a few miles away, a steady stream of students flowed in and out of medway high school speaking with grief counselors. school principal tim mccarron says in this building of about 800 students, maddie stood out. principal: one thing maddie was excellent at was making individuals feel good, laugh, share in her joy. we need to find that as we move together. reid: maddie was a three-sport student athlete, captain of both the field hockey and hockey teams. the school spent the morning meeting with her field hockey teammates who were preparing for next week's state tournament

without their goalie. maureen brodeur: i don't think there would be a person in this school, a freshman, that just came upon this year that would not know maddie. reid: well loved and well known. maureen brodeur: she was the light of the school. i believe truly that there are people like that. i think she brought it every day. reid: the cause of the deadly crash remains under investigation. there do not appear to be any skid marks leading up to the tree. but exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the crash are unclear. in franklin, i'm reid lamberty, wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: the placement of a sign becomes a point of controversy in concord. a family told to move the banner that says "black lives matter." town leaders insist that it had nothing to do with the sign's content. holding the "black lives matter" sign, they were asked to move from in front of their concord home. the cole family taking a stand. johnny cole: both our kids are kids of color. an african-american daughter and a latino son. they obviously matter a whole lot to us. we just want to bring awareness. frank: this demonstration getting a positive response, but not everyone so supportive.

johnny cole: the sign was here in front of our fence. that sign in the public right of way. an attorney representing an anonymous concord resident contacted the town to complain matter" sign here violated the town by-laws. chris whelan, town manager: in concord, of course, we value free speech. it's very important to us, but we also want to make sure our protected. todd cole: i think they were upset about the message and the sign. frank: town manager chris whelan says his office has no position chris whelan: we're trying to be fair and completely content neutral. frank: but the town has strict laws on signs in the public right of way. political or election signs can only remain for 14 days. contractor signs must go after the work is completed. for-sale signs permitted until the property is sold. chris whelan: the by-law makes very clear that a sign in the public right of way has restrictions on it. five feet away on private property, there would be no restrictions at all. frank: the coles moved their sign, but the educators hope people still pay attention for the sake of our country and their kids. johnny cole: it is very personal for us for sure. todd cole: we're trying to send

sunshine. depending on how much sunshine we see will depend on how warm the temperatures get. we can't rule out through even the afternoon a couple of isolated showers up through southern new hampshire as well as vermont but other than that i think most of us stay dry for most of the day. we are talking about much only 2/100ths of an inch has fallen in orange. 3/100ths of an inch of rain has fallen in concord. we welcome any rain we can get because we are down over 7.5 inches for the year in boston. for the month of october, we were down over two inches in boston so we'll welcome that. temperatures. they are on the way up as we go through the workweek. notice today around the lower 60's, tomorrow the same. but by tuesday, we're in the mid 60's. we should be running around 56 degrees this time of year. conditions, that is. temperatures in the upper 40's in worcester right now. mid 40's through the merrimack

so it's milder than it was yesterday. and temperatures are on the way up this week. we're going to talk about when we could see the 70's in the seven-day forecast ahead. frank? frank: thanks a lot, danielle. breaking news on the cape. flames engulf a boat docked in north falmouth. as you can see the fire destroyed the fishing boat named "good grief." the flames sparked about 5:30 this morning. firefighters used foam to keep the fire from spreading. no one was hurt. a cause is under investigation. antoinette: another fire to tell you about. this one inside a town house complex in danvers overnight. you can see the fire shooting through the roof. firefighters worked to put out the fire quickly. everyone made it out safely, but two dogs are unaccounted for right now. damage is extensive. frank: right now navy searchers say they have located the wreckage of the missing cargo ship "el faro." the teams made the discovery near the ship's last known location. the "el faro" disappeared during the fury of hurricane joaquin last month. 33 crew members were on board the ship; three with ties to massachusetts.

newscenter 5's pam cross tells us today an unmanned, remote-operated sub will be sent 15,000 feet down to the wreckage. pam: the wreckage of the "el faro" believed to be 15,000 feet down. a search team working for the navy on saturday using sonar equipment detected what experts think is the cargo ship, saying if so, it's in an upright position and in one piece. the "el faro" disappeared october 1 during hurricane joaquin. it was off the coast of the bahamas. three people linked to massachusetts were aboard. mariette wright, a crew member from the south coast whose mom said she lived for the sea. winthrop native keith griffen was a mass maritime graduate. he was first engineer on the "el faro." (bell tolling) just last week relatives held a memorial for jeffrey mathias. the kingston native was an engineer and father of three. there were 33 people on board

the container ship when it left the port of jacksonville headed for puerto rico. if the vessel is confirmed to be the "el faro," searchers will try and recover the voyage data recorder. experts say that could take weeks. i'm pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: right now, isis claiming responsibility for a deadly airliner crash in the egyptian desert. 224 people killed on a russia metrojet. at this hour, no indication of what brought the plane down. the black boxes have been recovered, and russia denies the claims by isis. as richard cantu reports, there is no dispute about the scale of the human tragedy. richard: the russian passenger jet went down here in this remote region of egypt's sinai peninsula after some 20 minutes in the air. there were no survivors among the 224 passengers and crew aboard. all but three were russian. egypt's prime minister visited the crash site. responders searched for remains, and ambulances transported bodies to the morgue.

the chartered flight was operated by metrojet, an airline based in moscow. it took off from this airport in the resort city of sharm el-sheikh bound for st. petersburg. according to an egyptian official as it was reaching 30,000 feet, the pilot radioed the aircraft was having technical problems and wanted to land. it vanished from radar shortly after. announcer: flight 9267 to sharm el-sheikh is delayed. richard: in saint petersburg, grief and disbelief as relatives learned their loved ones were lost. "i'm waiting for the person i love," said one. "i couldn't find the flight anywhere on the screen." the black boxes have been recovered and egypt's prime minister is promising an investigation into how this tragedy unfolded. richard kantu, abc news, new york. antoinette: there is no evidence to support the isis claim of downing the jetliner. two major airlines, germany's lufthansa and air france, aren't taking chances. both announced they would immediately stop flying over egypt's sinai peninsula for safety reasons.

frank: only on 5. a plane makes an emergency landing at beverly airport. the small aircraft was experiencing issues with its landing gear saturday. it touched down safely on the grass. the pilot was not injured. the incident is under investigation. crews battle a four-alarm fire in fitchburg. it broke out at a three-story residence on granite street around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. everyone inside was able to get out safely. there were no reported injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. antoinette: this morning police in holliston are searching for the suspects who stole three puppies from a kennel. it happened friday night at "pick a pup" on concord street. the alarm system sounded; but when police arrived, the suspects were gone. the owner is asking for the public's help. on facebook he asked people to keep an eye out on sites like craigslist for the pups. anyone with information is asked to contact police. frank: new this morning. the somerville teen once accused of assaulting a teammate at sports camp is now suing the city. the case against galileo mondol was dropped in april.

prosecutors had claimed the 19-year-old took part in a hazing ritual back in 2013 while at the camp in the berkshires. mondol denied the accusations. his lawsuit against the city alleges several leaders, including mayor joe curtatone, engaged in a witch hunt to have him charged. he's seeking $1 million. antoinette: new concerns this morning about the rapid growth of casino gambling he in the northeast. the hollywood casino in bangor, maine, got off to a great start but is now demanding a property tax break now that business has slowed down. casino observers here in massachusetts tell "the globe" they expect a similar situation could happen here if the plainridge park casino continues to see a decline in its revenue. right now, plainridge pays about $1.5 million a year in local property taxes and has not asked for a tax reduction. frank: massachusetts is getting two new courts specifically aimed at helping military veterans in legal trouble. veterans treatment courts will start hearing cases in holyoke and lawrence this week. the courts only deal with

veterans charged with misdemeanor and minor felony charges who pleaded guilty. under the voluntary program, instead of going to jail, the veterans enter a heavily supervised program where they get the services they need for substance abuse and mental health issues. antoinette: new research finds during the warm weather months, friday afternoons are the busiest on the "t." the study looked at data from buses from may to august. it found mondays typically have the most on-time buses, and friday afternoons often have much lower on-time rates. the analysts wrote that bostonians starting their weekends early in the summer months could help explain the delays. the mbta tells "the globe" work is being done to improve service every day, not only on fridays. antoinette: the new york city marathon is today, and more than 22 runners will take part in honor of martin richard, the youngest victim of the boston marathon attack. team m-r-8 has raised more than $60,000 while training for the marathon.

antoinette: i know you don't want to see all of this just yet but after last year's painful and historic winter, getting ready this year is a big priority for a lot of people. and this morning we're putting the focus on your home. where to start? newscenter 5's emily riemer had a local handyman show us the spots to check now. larry: first of all, the leaves are on the ground.

there, check for any loose shingles or damage to the roof. larry luddecke says you also want to make sure your attic is properly vented. larry: if the attic is cool, you'll have less ice dams because the heat of the house isn't melting the bottom of the snow. emily: many people learned about those ice dams the hard way last winter with so much snow, so often. consider buying a roof rake now before they sell out, and use it often once the snow starts. larry: as soon as you can. the way the snow came last year, every other day, it would be great if you could use it in between snows. emily: next, check all your windows. make sure the storm windows are down and the upper screen is locked. larry: it's not about security. it's about making the window nice and tight. emily: keep out the cold? larry: keep out the cold, bingo. emily: if you use your fireplace often, consider getting it professionally cleaned before that first fire. and also have a pro come check your heating system. maintenance now could save you hundreds later. antoinette: that was emily riemer reporting. she also learned this is also a

a couple showers along the cape moving towards nantucket. it's all due to this upper-level low disturbance that is really bringing in heavier rain up through northern new england. as we go through the day today, it's a cloudy start out there. it's kind of a cool start too. but we will see she's showers start to dissipate. we should even see breaks of sun. the future cast here i think is is a little overdone in terms of the moisture. but there could be one or two showers, i think, through about lunchtime. then after that notice we start to see breaks in the cloud deck so it will become mostly cloudy and even partly sunny by afternoon. now through the afternoon hours, we can't rule out one or two showers up through southern vermont, southern new hampshire. but i really think that's the extent of it. other than that, we should see more sunshine today. that's going to warm these temperatures up. in terms of how much rain we're seeing, not really much. about 2/100ths of an inch in orange. 3/100ths of an inch of rain in concord. not much rain. we really do need the rain. unfortunately not getting much today.

as you can see this area in tan here, this is actually a moderate drought. we are down 7.5 inches now for boston for the year down over 6 inches in worcester for the year in terms of rainfall. so we're looking for the rain. now. be wrapping up. we're warming up and dry this week. we'll be near record warmth thursday and friday. temperatures in the 70's. wow! that's nice for november. today. low 60's in boston. mid 60's maybe along the south shore and the cape. and then tonight with clear skies, allowing those temperatures to drop back into the 40's through the merrimack valley. 44 in worcester. upper 40's in boston. and then tomorrow we'll see full sunshine. it's a dry forecast but with light winds we could even have winds coming off the water. that's going to keep temperatures in boston at least near 60 degrees. but a lot of areas may see the low to even mid 60's tomorrow. so we're sunny. we're mild.

three people were killed when an out-of-control car slammed into a group of trick-or-treaters. one of the victims was a ten-year-old girl. several people were also hurt including a three-year-old girl. this happened just before 5:00 last night in the morris park neighborhood of the bronx. police believe the driver hit another car before it lost control and jumped the curb plowing into the crowd. so far, no charges have been filed. health departments on the west coast are investigating ecoli cases linked to chipotle restaurants. at least 22 people in the portland, oregon, area and in washington got sick after eating at the popular mexican food chain. several of them had to be hospitalized. chipotle confirms six restaurants are involved. all were immediately shut down. chipotle is now working with health officials to find the cause. >> now sportscenter 5 with bob halloran. bob: good morning, everyone. how far have the bruins come? well, at the abyss of the

you're tracking these showers and we're start to go see that in boston. danielle: some of it has made shore. wewe are seeing those showers. they're light in nature and pushing off to the east. we forecast those yesterday. it looks like they'll be moving out of here by mid morning. then we should see some breaks in the cloud deck and more sunshine by afternoon. let's show you where the showers are right now. a couple of them here through brockton, down to new bedford. a lot of them exiting the cape at this point. and some of these may be making it to the ground. they may not be because we have a lot of dry air in place. it's definitely raining though in the upper atmosphere. you can see what's happening. we have this area of low pressure here. the main swath of energy is up through northern new england and even snow through quebec. all of that is lift to go the north and east. already seeing some breaks out here in central and western new york in the cloud deck. that's going to translate over our area as we head through the afternoon. so temperatures right now in the

mid 50's though along the cape and the islands. as we go through the next 12 hours, notice temperatures will warm into the lower 60's through afternoon. we will keep showers in the forecast though through about lunchtime. again they're very hit or miss. big changes are coming. a major warm-up. we'll talk about when we could see near 70 degrees in the seven-day forecast ahead. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. breaking news on the cape this morning. flames engulf a boat docked in north falmouth. as you can see the fire destroyed the fishing boat named "good grief." the flames sparked about 5:30 this morning. firefighters used foam to keep the fire from spreading. no one was hurt. a cause is under investigation. frank: flames spark inside a townhouse complex in danvers overnight. you can see the fire shooting through the roof. firefighters worked to put out the fire quickly. everyone made it out safely, but two dogs are unaccounted for right now. damage is extensive. antoinette: right now navy searchers say they have located the wreckage of the missing cargo ship "el faro." the teams made the discovery

location. 33 crewmembers were on board when it sank last month; three frank: a group associated with isis is claiming responsibility for the downing of a russian airliner in egypt. all 224 people on board were killed. russian investigators say the isis claims are not credible, but the cause of that crash is not known. several airlines have decided to stop using that airspace until more is known. antoinette: the search is on for the suspects who stole three puppies from a kennel in holliston. it happened friday night at "pick a pup" on concord street. the owner is seeking the public's help asking people to keep an eye out on sites like craigslist for the pups. shock and sadness in a small massachusetts town. a high school senior full of promise killed in a car crash. 17-year-old madeline lamson of medway was a daughter, an athlete, and a friend. frank: as reid lamberty reports, the teen lost her life in a

single-car crash. reid: roadside sorrow melts into tears as classmates of a teenager killed here last night leave behind flowers at the scarred base of this tree. madeline lamson was alone when the car she was driving violently smashed into the tree just before midnight. >> there was a big, big boom. i looked out the window. there was a big fire over there. reid: witnesses tried to pull the 17-year-old from her car, but the resulting fire pushed them back. just a few miles away, a steady stream of students flowed in and out of medway high school speaking with grief counselors. school principal tim mccarron says in this building of about 800 students, maddie stood out. principal: one thing maddie was excellent at was making individuals feel good, laugh, share in her joy. we need to find that as we move together. reid: maddie was a three-sport student athlete, captain of both the field hockey and hockey teams. the school spent the morning meeting with her field hockey

voting states. clinton even having some halloween fun meeting a mini dopple ganger during her rally in south carolina. in new hampshire sanders had to take his rally outside after the crowd became too large. both parties vying to keep the campaigns on message. the republican campaigns don't have much time. their next debate less than two weeks away. frank: donald trump has unveiled his plan to reform the department of veteran affairs. trump laid his proposal out while speaking to veterans and active service members in norfolk, virginia, on saturday. he promised to create a more modern and lower-cost v.a. that would rein in bureaucracy and cut down wait times. trump also pledged that, under his presidency, veterans would be able to use their i.d. card to get care immediately at any private provider that accepts medicare. trump: they can choose better or more convenient care from the doctor and facility of their choice.

frank: the placement of a sign becomes a point of controversy in concord. a family told to move the banner that says "black lives matter." town leaders insist that it had nothing to do with the sign's content. holding the "black lives matter" sign, they were asked to move from in front of their concord

home. the cole family taking a stand. johnny cole: both our kids are kids of color. an african-american daughter and a latino son. they obviously matter a whole lot to us. we just want to bring awareness. frank: this demonstration getting a positive response, but not everyone so supportive. johnny cole: the sign was here in front of our fence. frank: the coles originally put that sign in the public right of way. an attorney representing an anonymous concord resident contacted the town to complain that having that "black lives matter" sign here violated the town by-laws. chris whelan, town manager: in concord, of course, we value free speech. it's very important to us, but we also want to make sure our historic and rural character is todd cole: i think they were upset about the message and the sign. frank: town manager chris whelan says his office has no position on the message. chris whelan: we're trying to be fair and completely content neutral. frank: but the town has strict laws on signs in the public right of way. political or election signs can only remain for 14 days. contractor signs must go after the work is completed. for-sale signs permitted until the property is sold. chris whelan: the by-law makes very clear that a sign in the public right of way has restrictions on it.

five feet away on private property, there would be no restrictions at all. frank: the coles moved their sign, but the educators hope people still pay attention for the sake of our country and their kids. johnny cole: it is very personal for us for sure. todd cole: we're trying to send a message that it's important for our family and that we would love discussions to be had around the dinner table every night about these matters. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist danielle vollmar. danielle: it's a cloudy start over boston. you can see it right here. lots of clouds. it's all associated with some showers. i do want to show you what is going on currently. i want to show you that the rain totals down over 7.5 inches for the year. the month of october, we're down over two inches so we really do need that rain. and, in fact, we are going to see those showers continue as we go through the day. i want to show you this on the future cast if i can. these showers we've been seeing on the south shore, the cape and

off shore by lunchtime. and thereafter, we should see some breaks in the cloud deck. close breaks in the cloud deck will allow for some sunshine. that sunshine should hopefully warm up the atmosphere. one area i'm concerned with is up through southern new hampshire and southern vermont where you could see one or two showers through the afternoon but other than that, everybody else is beginning to dry out. again as i said before, we really do need the rain. temperatures are on the way up. yesterday's high was 52 degrees. today we're going for a high temperature of 61. tomorrow is 62 and by tuesday, 65 degrees. our average high temperature for this time of year should be around 56 degrees. so we will take the warmer temperatures. as you look over boston, those clouds are there. it's 5 degrees. the winds are out of the south of southeast at about 8 miles an hour. and you're going to notice those winds today. they're going to shift from the south to the south and west at about 10-15 miles an hour through the afternoon.

highs in worcester. upper 50's through nashua. low 60's in boston. and low to mid 60's along the south shore, the cape and the islands. and again we're looking at mostly cloudy skies. now tonight the skies begin to clear out. with clear skies and the winds turn to go the west and starting to calm down, temperatures are going to drop into the low 40's through the merrimack valley. mid 40's in worcester. upper 40's in boston and low 50's on the cape and the islands. and then tomorrow with a lot more sunshine, dry conditions, light winds, temperatures start to warm into the upper 50's in worcester. upper 50's boston. low 60's lawrence. and low to mid 60's along the south shore, the cape and the islands. next seven days we are dry. we are sunny. and temperatures continue to climb. so 62 for your monday. 65 degrees on tuesday. and by midweek, we're in the upper 60's. now thursday is the day i'm watching very carefully.

we could be near record high temperatures. the high temperature in boston is actually 79. the record high temperature in worcester is 73 degrees. we're going to get very close. may not break it. but be close enough. then on friday, more clouds into the forecast. there there is a chance for some showers friday afternoon into early saturday. and behind that, we cool temperatures back into the 60's, but this week is warm. so enjoy it. antoinette and frank. frank: thanks a lot, danielle. this week's high 5 takes us to watertown. antoinette: mike lynch hockey team who has redefined dynasty and perfection all the while doing it with class and dignity. mike: when you live in celebrations cross gender and age groups. so it was when the field hockey team broke the national record on october 21. it was a reason for a very large family to share the joyous occasion together. the 2015 team is another squad in an assembly line of

great day. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: there have been a number of news reports on the rapidly growing use of unmanned aircraft systems or drones here in the united states. drone use is at an all-time high with industry estimates of 500,000 drones flying in u.s. airspace for both recreation and limited commercial use. walmart just joined amazon and google, asking the federal aviation administration for permission to test drones for deliveries and other business purposes. in the eyes of many drone hobbyists and entrepreneurs, the sky's the limit when it comes to the use of drones from aerial photography to drone racing, from the delivery of emergency supplies to the delivery of that "must have right now" consumer product. there is much potential for fun and efficiency. there are also threats to safety and privacy. according to the u.s. department of transportation, the f.a.a.

operations. pilot sightings of drones doubled between 2014 and 2015. other incidents include a drone crashing at the u.s. open and, most recently, a drone carrying drugs and hacksaw blades crashing into an oklahoma prison. so last week's announcement by the u.s. department of transportation and the f.a.a. to establish a drone registration process seems like a logical and much-needed next step. the wild west days of drone use are quickly coming to an end. when the government clearly outlines acceptable guidelines for drone use, innovators will finally have a defined framework from which to push drone
