tension on the job. if it doesn't involve falling asleep on the job. cindy: close your eyes. emily: good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. it's a nice morning. cindy: it is although i think some people may be squinting and closing their eyes a little bit this morning because 6:01 we're back to standard time. emily: beautiful. cindy: really really nice. we are back to standard time. our sunrise is now an hour earlier so officially up at 6:18 this morning. but here's the thing. we go months from now into the erlty part of december. sunrise is is just before 7:00. it's back to just after 7:00 a.m. again by the first of january. but at least we've got more light in the mornings for now. the bus stop this morning, kids will want a light jacket. lots of upper 40's out there this morning but they're getting off the bus this afternoon. it's in the lower 60's so a mild day on average. quite a range in temperatures from the lower 50's here boston down to the cape to the upper 40's in beverly and upper 30's

12-hour forecast does push those temperatures up through the 50's this morning to around 60 degrees or so by lunchtime. i think we're looking at highs 60's. you will notice high, thin cloudiness around. these clouds will try to get here and never will. it's running into high pressure. we're looking at a dry day today with some of the thin clouds around from time to time. 62 your high in saugus. we'll jump up to 63 lowell back to framingham. upper 50's to the higher elevations in worcester county but notice st. louis blues bury 61. as warm as 64 in bridgewater. taunton today may sneak into the mid 60's. on the cape that light west-northwesterly wind will push temperatures into the lower 60's. nice and mild here for your monday. let's get you out to the roads. yes, solar glare coming back to our 6:00 a.m. commuters, olessa. olessa: waiting for that to start happening right here along the pike. eastbound move to go the top of the screen by allston/brighton. let's get to the maps. we're watching an early morning accident 93 southbound delays out of methuen. then that volume picks up approaching 1289.

there's a crash there on 93 southbound right over in the center lane. expect those delays back to commerce way. west of town the pike still looks good for us this morning. then as you travel south, 24 building delays out of brockton. 95 from sharon. and route 3 from weymouth into braintree. expressway 25-30 now braintree to boston. trains and buses still running on schedule. randy: thank you, olessa. right now a high school football star is in critical condition after being stabbed on the street. the attack coming just hours after he scored the winning touchdown in a huge game. emily: the eye's sera congi is live in everett with what we know at this hour. sera: emily and randy, the high school junior is in critical but stable condition. he was hurt while stepping in to some sort of fight. the school superintendent says this all happened saturday after a big game for the high school. 16-year-old marvens fedna scored the winning touchdown. later that night he was walking home from a party with a group when someone attacked one of them. fedna tried to help and was

stabbed in the back and hand. he underwent surgery at mass general, according to the superintendent, who also says fedna is doing okay. no other boys were hurt in this incident. they apparently did not know the attacker. the team's coach tells the herald this morning that they're praying and optimistic that fedna will make a full recovery. live in everett this morning, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now police are trying to capture these vandals caught on camera defacing an islamic center. the eye's todd kazakiewich is live in burlington with the todd? todd: emily, good morning. those clues include the surveillance video in addition to the graffiti that you see spray painted on the building behind me. all over the building. this morning police are calling it a hate crime. and it's not the first time this targeted. the islamic center installed security cameras two years ago when the building was spray painted. this time we get a clear look at the suspects and their car. police say they sprayed u.s.a. on all four sides of the

early sunday morning. the center president says he fears what more could happen. >> i am concerned about safety of the people. what will they do next? what will they do next and how can we prevent it? todd: police are now looking for white ford crown victoria. we will bring you new information as we get it. live in burlington, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: breaking right now. an airline official dismissing a key theory about a deadly plane crash in egypt. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is following overnight developments. erika: a metrojet official is rejecting any suggestion that a technical issue brought that plane down over the egyptian desert. russian officials just announcing the black boxes are in good condition. overnight the bodies of those killed begin to arrive home in russia. aviation experts say the plane broke up at high altitude scattering its debris over six miles.

isis has claimed responsibility for the disaster, but intelligence leaders say the group doesn't have the weapons to do it. still many say an external threat is probably what took down the plane. >> the probability is here with an in-flight break-up that something caused that, something on the order of a bomb or an incendiary explosion of some sort on the airplane. erika: the metro jet official is blaming a mechanical impact saying the jet lost speed rapidly before breaking up in midair. all 224 people on board were killed. randy? randy: erika, thank you. 6 minutes after 6:00. the wreckage of this missing cargo ship may have been found. the navy is sending unmanned subs down 15,000 feet to get a closer look at what could be the "el faro." that ship went down during hurricane joaquin. now the mother of one of those onboard hopes the discovery will lead to answers. mariette wright was one of three crew members with ties to massachusetts. if the wreckage is that of "el faro"-- and the data recorder is

insight into her final actions. >> i wonder when she knew the ship was sinking, if she had tried to figure out some way to escape or some way to save everybody on there because that's how she was. randy: the ship will not be brought to the surface; but if remains are found, the navy will try to recover them. star ferry is in question this morning after a federal judge in maine ordered marshals to seize it. it comes after portland pilots, services to the ferry, says it' s owed $200,000. this new trouble comes as the nova scotian government says it is ending its contract with nova star in favor of another company. a spokesman for nova star says it will fulfill its obligations in the next few weeks. this week the largest release of federal prisoners is expected to

begin. all of those inmates had their drug sentences reduced under new federal guidelines allowing them to get out of prison early. 6,000 prisoners will be released nationwide. that includes 93 inmates here in massachusetts. about half of those people were convicted of heroin offenses. announcer: the son of a polish immigrant who grew up in a brooklyn tenement. he went to public school and then college where the work of his life began. for white house hopeful bernie the democrat is running the spot in new hampshire and iowa. the sanders camp is spending more than $2 million to run the ad over the next 10 days. rival hillary clinton has been running ads in key states for several months. commitment 2016. republicans are calling for changes in the debate format. representatives for some of the g.o.p. candidates, including donald trump and ben carson, gathered last night to work on reshaping their party's primary debates. last week's debate, hosted by

the moderators' choice of questions and who they were directed to. changes to the format will be discussed with broadcast sponsors. emily: the state lottery commissioner is meeting today to discuss the future of fantasy sports in massachusetts. sites like draftkings and fanduel are under fire for so-called "insider trading." state lottery leaders also want to know if the sites should be regulated. earlier this month, state treasurer deborah goldberg said fantasy sites could be hurting lottery revenue. breaking overnight. the kansas city royals are the new world series champions. announcer: the 1-2 again. the royals 2015 world champions. emily: they beat the new york mets in a 12-inning game 5 that went past midnight. the royals pouring it on in the 12th scoring five runs after the mets kept them at zero for nine innings. 7-2 the final. this is the royals' second world series championship and the first since 1985.

these are forecasted high temperatures today. i want you to notice that warmth city. our jetstream is going to be bubbling up with a big ridge days. that's going to allow that warmth to stream at us from the south and west so we are going to be warming it up. that being said, a little chilly out the door this morning especially through the merrimack valley and back into northern worcester county where it's as cold as 35 in orange, 38 in fitch buffing. otherwise 40's worcester, nashua 48 in beverly. out the door in boston, 54 right now and notice we've got lots of lower 50's from plymouth down to the cape. new bedford 52 as you are stepping out right now. warmer to the south because we do have some cloudiness around. this is high thin cloudiness here so the bark here is worse than the bite. you can see these clouds are actually streaming off an area of rain which is trying to move north ward but it's not really making much progress. it probably won't get much farther north than this as it's run inning on block of high pressure protecting us. this high will keep the rain away.

a few of those clouds sneak in. i'm filtering the sunshine from time to time but notice by lunchtime, it's up around 60 degrees. with a light north-northwesterly wind, we should manage the low 60's for highs today. average high though is 56 this time of year. so a little bit above ample today. 62 nashua to lawrence. looking for upper 50's to hilly terrain in worcester county. lower 60's down on the cape as well. we're in great shape this afternoon. we'll fall back tonight into the 30's and 40's. coolest spots will be in the low 0's out through orange. notice boston in the mid 40's. that's where we'll be on cape cod by tomorrow morning as well. high pressure begins to shift eastward tomorrow so that's going to allow our winds to begin that turn to the southwest. that is going to start to bring in warmer temperature so from the lower 60's today, we jump into the mid 60's on tuesday. our coolest spot tomorrow with that southwesterly wind going to be on cape cod smed. so a good 10 degrees above average tomorrow. looking good through wednesday. very similar. near record warmth coming thursday into friday. look at the record high

temperatures on friday. boston's record is 73. we are going to be close. the trade-off on friday, a few clouds around. there could be a spot shower in the morning and eventually we're bringing in colder temperatures this weekend. saturday we're still near 60 degrees but a big dose of reality there by sunday. with highs around 50. but what a week! olessa: enjoy it while we have it. because you know it won't last. cindy: enjoy it. olessa: so far a little built busy on the roads. we're watching a few problems spots. sky 5 in woburn. that's 128. 93 by 128 rather. the southbound side as you can see that accident on the shoulder. it was blocking the right lane a few minutes ago. you have pretty heavy delays getting into that accident scene. you can see it there backing up once again slow going approach 128 on 95 south. let's get over to the maps now. north of that camera shot, there's another crash. this one on 93 south by 495. delays back into methuen. then pretty much stays heavy down to where that other accident has just been pushed off to the shoulder.

if you're traveling eastbound on the pike, 15-20, 495 to 128. we're watching volume on 24 north. a crash by route 123. the route 3 area is heavy into weymouth. your ride on the expressway almost half an hour braintree to boston. trains and buses still running on schedule. i'm olessa stepanova. that's a look at your traffic. >> get out of my car or i will call the police. emily: an attack on an uber driver caught on camera in california. it happened around 8:00 friday night just when that driver was about to end his shift. edward caban says the attack happened once he cancelled the ride because the passenger was getting aggressive. and he claims things were rocky from the start saying the suspect, benjamin golden, was drunk when he picked him up. >> we get driving. we get going. he's fading in and out of consciousness. he's tumbling around in the back seat refusing to put on a seat belt. emily: caban eventually pepper-sprayed golden to make him stop. golden is charged with public intoxication and assault on a cab driver. randy: police in north reading

judgment by putting out cough syrup for trick or treaters. but they say that person did not do anything criminal. police got reports about the syrup being left for kids trick or treating near olde farm lane. they found the home, talked to the person inside, and determined there was no intent to hurt anyone. still if you know your kids were in that neighborhood, check their candy bags. chipotle is being linked to an e. coli outbreak in washington state and oregon. as of friday 19 people were sick, but experts think that number will go up. seventeen of those people had eaten at the burrito chain before they developed the infection. the cause is still under investigation. all chipotles in both states voluntarily shut down. emily: new this morning. the work day can be full of stressful situations from that big meeting to never-ending deadlines. but calming your nerves could be just a lunch break away. one boston hospital is showing staffers how. >> so we'll begin by checking in

with our posture. emily: it's lunch time at mass general and on their breaks, these staffers are taking the word literally-- breaking from their routine-- >> we'll start by releasing tension. emily: --using meditation to relax. and rena chudnofsky with the benson henry institute say it has major benefits beyond this session. rena: it's improving employee retention, managerial effectiveness. people are more creative. you're able to problem solve. emily: you can try it, too. first, remind yourself to breathe. rena: if you are in a business meeting, the reminder to just pause and exhale before you make a decision can be really helpful. emily: second, know that every little bit counts. rena: every time you turn on your computer, you're going through the rebooting process, it's turning on. that could be a perfect time for you to do some breathing. emily: and lastly, if breathing isn't for you, try something else. rena: you can also elicit the relaxation response with a word or phrase or part of a prayer. maybe on the exhale you focus on letting go and you just repeat

and on cape cod, we'll sneak into the lower 60's as well. mild today but wait until you see what's coming this week. it does get even warmer. let's get you out to the roads though because they are getting busier now. olessa: watching those delays pick up. sky 5 over the scene of an accident in woburn for thus morning. this is 93 south by 128. as you can see the crash is now on the shoulder not blocking any lanes but it is causing heavy delays. let's get on the maps. i'll show you where the back-up starts. 93 southbound. there's another crash at 495. you've got that heavy volume out of methuen down to that accident scene. then it opens up just a bit-then that heavy stretch of volume there aapproaching that accident that you just saw live which is now on the shoulder but it was blocking two lanes over by 128. eastbound on the pike heavier now. almost 35 minutes from 495 out to 128. 24 northbound heavy as well. an accident by route 123. and then you've got that dlie on the expressway. it's about 30 minutes now braintree to boston. emily. emily: all right, olessa, thank you. breaking overnight. a top official with the airline that crashed in egypt says there is something that outside the

plane that caused it to crash. he disputed reports that there was any communication from the crew. isis claimed to have downed the plane, but some experts doubt they have the capability. randy: right now police are looking for these men wanted in what they're calling a "hate crime." the islamic center in burlington was spray-painted with graffiti early sunday morning. they installed security cameras when the building was vandalized two years ago. emily: right now a star football randy: the eye's sera congi is in everett with the move off the field that landed him in the hospital. sera: randy and emily, that high school junior is in the hospital in critical but stable condition with stab wounds. school officials say that 16-year-old marvens fedna was stabbed in the back and hand just hours after he scored the winning touchdown at a game on saturday. the stunning upset top-seeded st. john's prep capping an outstanding game for the junior. later that night, walking home from a party, his coach says he

group and stepped in. the coach telling "the herald," quote, "when he tried to help the person, the attackers turned on him. we're just all praying and optimistic that he'll make a full recovery." fedna was with other everett teammates at the time. no one else was hurt in this incident. no word yet on any arrests. the district attorney's office will only say this is an active investigation. live in everett, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: grief counselors will be at medway high school this morning as students deal with the death of classmate. 17-year-old maddie lamson was killed in a single-car crash late friday night. flowers now mark the site of the tragedy in neighboring franklin. lamson was a senior at medway high and played several sports. her car crashed into a tree and caught fire. emily: a pit bull has a long recovery ahead of her after she was found starving near railroad tracks in claremont, new hampshire. erika's back with the clues suggesting this is a case of animal abuse. erika: the dog, named hope, is now in the care of a shelter owner.

one of the worst she's seen in 19 years, and there's no way it happened overnight. the pit bull was found last week by someone out walking their dog. hope was weak and weighed only 27 pounds, about half of what she should weigh. shelter owner cathy sullivan says that means someone abandoned her since hope would not have been able to get there on her own. >> her condition when she was found, there's no way she walked there. the vet said probably another hour, she would've been gone. erika: sullivan estimates hope is between one and four years old and says she'll need extra care for a long time. the "lost my way" animal shelter is accepting donations for her care. emily: the search is on for three puppies stolen from a kennel in holliston. and the kennel owners tell us they might know who took them. the yellow lab and two boxers were taken from the pick-a-pup kennel on friday night. police responded when the alarm went off, but no one noticed the dogs were missing until the next morning. the kennel owner says three people came in asking specifically about those puppies

disappeared. >> there was nothing unusual about them at the time so we didn't think anything of it, but it's certainly possible that that was what happened, that those were the people involved. emily: those puppies do still need shots and certain food, so the owner hopes they'll be taken care of. the dogs are microchipped, so that will likely make them easier to find. randy: 6:36 on this monday morning. a mini "baby boom" could be headed our way. emily: the effect last winter is having right now. a large sea turtle found dead. what marine biologists believe took its life. randy: and ahead in news to go, a touchdown moment one teen will never forget. the teammates rallying behind him and his family. one in andover by 495 and another accident by 128. also southbound. this one is now on the shoulder but you've got those delays all the way back to methuen because of those two separate crashes. eastbound side of route 2 watching an accident by route 70. that has one lane shut down and the pike is heavy 495 to 128 almost 45 minutes. disabled car in the center lane. 128 north by highland avenue. expect delays there. as you travel northbound on 24 accident still clearing by route 123. expressway is about 30 braintree to boston. and we're watching minor delays on the greenline. they're eastbound. everything else is on schedule. emily, randy. randy: a high school football player is in critical condition this morning. he was stabbed on the street after a big win. emily: the eye's sera congi is live in everett with what police know right now. sera: emily and randy, the high school junior stepped in when someone he was with came under attack. 16-year-old marvens fedna just finished a great game saturday in which he scored the winning touchdown. the school superintendent says later that night, he was walking home from a party with a group of friends when someone came

under attack. fedna tried to help and ended up getting stabbed in the back and the hand. he was taken to mass general. he's now in critical but stable condition at this point. no word on any arrests. live this morning in everett, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. todd: this morning police here in burlington are looking for the suspect who defaced the islamic center as you can see here behind me spray painting building. there is surveillance video. it shows the suspects in their car. police are calling this a hate crime. they say it happened early sunday morning. the building was also vandalized two years ago and the security cameras that captured the suspects this time were installed after that last incident. now police are looking for three men who are driving a white ford crown vic. reporting live in burlington, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: breaking news in the saturday plane crash in egypt. russian authorities say the black boxes are in good condition. this as airline officials reject the theory of a technical

since 1985. emily: the wreckage of this missing cargo ship may have been found. the navy is sending unmanned subs down 15,000 feet to get a closer look at what could be the "el faro." that ship went down during hurricane joaquin. it will not be brought to the surface; but if human remains are found, the navy will try to recover them. randy: fred thompson, a former u.s. senator who was also a well-known film and tv actor, has died. thompson became well known for his role on "law & order" before he represented tennessee in the senate. he also ran for president in 2008. in a statement, thompson's family says he died after a battle with lymphona. he was 73 years old. emily: a new hampshire woman who pleaded guilty to killing one of her kids still has parental rights to another. unique gould is serving time for the beating death of her two-year-old son. but she still has rights to a baby girl born after the sentencing. on friday a state lawmaker proposed a bill to end parental rights when a parent is convicted of manslaughter or

murder of another child. randy: a unique police program in gloucester is catching on in other states. the angel program fast-tracks heroin addicts into treatment rather than jail. it also assigns a volunteer to work with them. departments in nine states are now looking into the program. gloucester says larceny and shoplifting are down possibly as a result of angel. emily: northeastern university is going international. today the school will announce plans for a satellite campus in toronto. it would offer graduate programs for working professionals. northeastern has three other satellite campuses in seattle, charlotte, and silicon valley. randy: flames engulf a fishing boat in north falmouth. four people were picked up by the coast guard after the 36-foot "good grief" ran aground sunday morning. one person suffered minor injuries. firefighters used foam to keep flames from spreading to other boats. emily: the city of boston is getting tough on indycar promoters ahead of a labor day race.

the grand prix of boston is supposed to happen in september 2016. on friday, "the herald" obtained an email showing the mayor wants indycar to finalize deals with state agencies in the next two weeks. mayor walsh has signed a deal with indycar that could put taxpayers on the hook for security and road improvements. announcer: the son of a polish immigrant, he grew up in a brooklyn tenement. he went to public schools and then college where the work of his life began. randy: that's the first t.v. ad for white house hopeful bernie sanders. the democrat is running the spot in new hampshire and iowa. the sanders camp is spending more than $2 million to run the ad over the next 10 days. rival hillary clinton has been running ads in key states for several months. emily: a man attacked an uber driver. the driver sprayed him with pepper spray to stop the assault.

arrested. randy: local lawsuits have geico accused of avoiding medical claims from clinics in lower-income communities. "the globe" reports the insurer has sued local chiropractors and physical therapists claiming they forced them into legal battles. most of those cases end up settling with the practices promising to stop accepting geico clients. it's meant to protect the company from fraud. the lawsuit strategy has been used in dorchester, roxbury, lawrence, brockton, and fall river. emily: pope francis is planning a long-awaited trip to mexico. he will arrive on february 12 to the heavily roman catholic country. francis is expected to address violence in mexico as well as migration. some officials are hoping the pope will tour the border with the u.s. randy: safety experts are concerned about a new study of rear-end crashes. the study in "the journal of traffic injury prevention" finds children can suffer from head injuries while they're in rear-facing car seats. it finds that seats can be made safer for rear-end crashes, but experts are saying parents

on the contrary, they say, studies show infants and young toddlers are still five times safer riding backwards. biologists at the new england aquarium say an 800-pound leatherback sea turtle, found floating off the coast of woods hole saturday, died because it got tangled in marine gear. experts examined the animal's body yesterday and found abrasions on its neck and flipper. they say turtles often get caught in lines attached to buoys, moorings, and other lobster traps and can't get free. emily: a marathon runner from las vegas crosses a milestone in new hampshire. 73-year-old john maultsby finished his 50th marathon yesterday. he wanted to run one in every state and completed his mission in manchester. it took him 13 years to reach his goal. he's run seven marathons this year alone. randy: supporters line up bright and early for the first annual pete frates 5k. the "run walk and wheel" took place at lynch park in beverly

we're as chilly as 34 out in orange. here you see the sun is up. high, thin clouds are around especially from the city of boston on south ward. that's why the temperature s are a little bit warmer. these clouds are actually streaming off an area of rain down here through virginia, north carolina. this rain is trying to lift in. it's running into high pressure so it's never going to get here. we will be in and out of these high, thib clouds throughout the day. partly to at times mostly sunny skies. temperatures coming up by lunchtime near 60 degrees. with a light north-northwesterly wind around 10 miles an hour. we'll top out in the lower 60's this afternoon. average high this time of year is in the mid 50's. mild today. we'll cool it back into the 30's to mid 40's overnight. and tomorrow features a lot of sunshine. as that high shifts eastward, we're going to start to see more of a southwesterly wind. we're bringing the temperatures up mid 60's here tuesday into wednesday. increasing cloud cover thursday into friday. there could be a spot shower friday morning but we're going to be flirting with record high temperatures here on thursday and again on friday. these are the records for worcester. lower 70's boston upper 70's.
