>> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." emily: 5:00 a.m. also on the eye this morning, at first glance you might not notice but that is not a diamond. the engagement ring taking a bite out of tradition ahead. cindy: trying to figure out what it was. emily: did you get it. randy: no cavities. emily: good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. another great day out there. sphem if you liked yesterday. cindy: then you're going to love today. a little bit brighter. a little bit warmer. although out the door this morning it's cooler than it was yesterday so be prepared for it. you may need a jacket as you're heading out. eight degrees cooler in boston now compared to this time yesterday and 17 degree colder in plymouth. we're not seeing the 50's out the door this morning. the 30's and 40's. 47 in boston. 43 in worcester. in between, mid 30's here bedford to nashua. it's 39 in beverly. we are near freezing this morning in norwood. could be a little frost down this way. taunton 34. we're 34 on the vineyard as well.

the skies are clearer. we're going to enjoy a lot of sunshine throughout the day. there are cloud, a couple showers here. near the canadian border drifting into northern maine. that's a warm front bringing in milder temperatures. with high pressure in control, wall-to-wall sunshine today. the sun is up at 6:20. sets at 4:37. you can see we're going to talk a lot of sunshine today. by lunchtime we're averaging in the mid 60's with a southwesterly wind. we'll hold there on the cape. otherwise we pop up into the upper 60's to near 70 degrees this afternoon. so another mild november day around here. let's get you out to the roads and see how we're looking. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning. a live look outside at the zakim bridge. looking good behind me. the leverett connector also problem-free ride. let's get over to the maps and check out the rest of that ride. overnight construction in the final stages clearing as we speak. 93 south at the zakim. also along 95 north by 128. we're picking up the roadwork on 128 great plain avenue to route 9. west of town you're in good shape. there is construction by newton corner also clearing along the pike. the last project in the final stages 128 south from 4 and 225

down to route 2. so far the trains and the buses are starting the morning on schedule. emily. emily: thank you. breaking right now, an attack triggering a heavy police response in canton sneapped the "eyeopener"'s pam cross is at the scene with what we know at this hour. pam? pam: randy, emily. good morning. i am on washington street in canton about a block from the house where this incident is going on. i'll move out of the way so you can take a look. there's been a police presence here for the last couple of hours. none of us are really sure exactly what led to the incident. we have learned that one person inside a house was stabbed. they were rushed to norwood hospital. the extent of the injuries not known. streets leading into the area have been blocked off. mutual aid, officers from other departments, are helping canton police. sharon, norwood, dedham.

they're redirecting traffic and trying to keep the area clear. state police also on scene. aparnly the swat team, their negotiation specialists. canton police have promised an update as soon as they have information. but at this point we know that someone has barricaded themselves inside the house. one person is injured. heavy police presence here. reporting live from canton, i'm pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: breaking overnight. right now boston police are searching for a killer after a man was gunned down in dorchester. it happened just after midnight on shepton street. scene. we'll bring you new information randy: also breaking the black box recordings suggest an emergency situation took place on board a russian plane before it crashed. news agency interfax reports the crew was taken by surprise and had no time to issue a distress call. senior defense officials say an

plane went down over egypt. u.s. intelligence analysts believe it could have been an explosion caused by the fuel tank, or a bomb. all 224 people on board were killed. emily: police are urging parents randy: a poisonous toilet bowl cleaner turned up in candy bags of two kids, six and 14 years old. the blue disks still in their original packing. printed right on the back: keep out of reach of children. the kids don't know each other and don't remember who gave it to them, but police say they were both trick or treating along residential streets near the center of town. residents shocked, saying it's hard to believe any one could be so malicious.

that to like a six-year-old. >> it's pretty malicious that people are doing with such an innocent holiday that's supposed to be fun for the kids. emily: right now police in hudson, new hampshire, want to know who put this razor blade in a kid's trick-or-treat bag. the blade was not in a piece of candy but loose in the bag. the child's parent found it before it did any damage. new this morning the family of an everett teenager stabbed while trying to save another person is calling the victim a hero. the eye's erika tarantal joins us as the victim shows signs of improvement this morning. erika: marvens fedna has been upgraded from critical to fair condition following sunday morning's attack. his brother saying the teen was just doing what he always does-- help out. fedna was stabbed while trying to stop a fight after one group of boys attacked another on the street. his brother says he's not surprised, telling "the herald," quote, "that's the type of

person he is. anyone who would be in that type of situation, he'd try his best to defend them or to help out. someone screamed for help and he was right there." on saturday afternoon, fedna helped lead everett to a playoff victory of st. john's prep. everett's mayor says police are determined to find the people behind the attack. emily: right now. a suffolk county corrections officer is facing charges accused of attacking a teenager while armed. police say jeffrey parillo confronted a group of teens sunday night at the norton reservoir. they were hanging out in a car when parillo demanded one of them get out of the vehicle. witnesses say parillo told the teens he was a police officer, but they had no reason to believe him. that's when parillo allegedly the car. pinning the officer down until police arrived. neighbors we talked to are in shock. >> i just know he's a nice guy from a neighborhood standpoint. >> he's a cop.

it just didn't seem to be in his nature. emily: parillo is now on administrative leave. randy: voters go to the polls today in communities across the state. that includes in the city of boston where members of city council are on the ballot. the most closely watched contest is in district 4. that's where longtime councilor charles yancey finished second in the preliminary election to challenger andrea joy campbell. there are also mayoral races in play today, including a new mayor for medford for the first time since 1988. current mayor michael mcglynn is retiring. but other polling hours vary from town to town. emily: commitment 2016. another poll showing ben carson's popularity among g.o.p. voters in growing. carson surges to 29% in the nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. donald trump has 23%. he's followed by marco rubio with 11%. ted cruz at 10%. and jeb bush with 8%. it's the second national poll in a week showing carson in the

a new push to find a republican to challenge new hampshire senator kelly ayotte. former new hampshire house speaker bill o'brien has scheduled a private meeting of conservative house members and activists. o'brien says time and time again, the republican senator has sided with the obama agenda. >> just as we were beginning to make progress, kelly ayotte joined the democrats to blow that progress apart. emily: that private meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow night. when asked by wmur for comment about the meeting, senator ayotte declined. randy: there is a new setback this morning for the controversial keystone pipeline project. the company behind the project is asking the state department to halt its review. trans-canada says it needs more time to negotiate with the state of nebraska about the best route through the state. the move comes before the obama administration was expected to reject it over environmental reasons. emily: a scandal at the vatican

randy: good morning to you. the b.c. high soccer teams just wrapped up their annual fundraiser to fight breast cancer. they also wore pink all month long to honor those who are still battling that disease. randy: they look great. we would love to see how you're helping your community. just go to the front page of wcvb.com and upload it in the u-local section of our website. olessa: i got a little piece of winter this morning again. expecting it. cindy: it's all about layers right now because there's a chill in the air this morning. it will be beautiful again this afternoon. we're getting spoiled a little bit. it is november. this can happen in november. take a look at this. you remember what it looked like this is out on the west coast. this is mount hood in horry gone. you can see the snow was flying. elevations to about 4,000 feet. the kids were loving it there. but it has been out west where they've been seeing colder temperatures and also some snow. it hasn't just been in oregon. you can see this morning look at

an upper-level low over nevada. snow stretching up to montana. you can see how the clouds are lifting well to the north. there is a bubble of warmth in the middle of the country. these are forecast highs today. chicago 70. kansas city in the lower 70's. memphis in the upper 70's. that's going to be streaming in our direction. we're going into the upper 60's today. that is well above average for this time of year. and with the jetstream running to our north this entire week, we're talking about temperatures on average 10-15 degrees above normal. we could start with record high temperatures here by friday. so we're enjoying the warmth for now. it is 47 out the door right now in boston. and 43 in worcester. in between, a lot of 30's. you do need that jacket this morning. you'll be able to shed it later this afternoon. 39 in beverly. 35 in nashua. notice we're at freezing norwood, near it in taunton. low 30's all the way down to the vineyard. just 39 in falmouth. so colder this morning out the door than it was yesterday. but that's because the skies are completely clear. to the forth there are some clouds up near the canadian border.

and into the state of maine right now, rain and snow at least up through northern maine. that's a warm frontal boundary temperatures. with high pressure right on top of southern new england this morning, it will give us a lot of sunshine here throughout the day. sunrise at 6:20 this morning. by 8:00 a.m. we should be up around 50 degrees. your lunch hour today maybe brown bag it. go for a walk. should be in the mid 60's on average, and the sun goes down at 4:35 today. temperatures falling back through the 60's but here are your highs. upper 60's to near 70 degrees in boston and lawrence and nashua. even on the south shore in marshfield with that southwesterly wind, 67 for you. coolest spot today on the south coast and the cape. lower to middle 60's there. we'll fall back tonight most lee into the 40's. not as cold as it is out there this morning when you're heading out tomorrow morning and tomorrow high pressure is going to be right on top of us and starting to clip eastward so lighter winds tomorrow. i think we're contending with a sea breeze. we'll warm it up starting on

thursday with more of a southerly wind taking shape. you see these clouds off to the west. they'll be increasing throughout the day on thursday. today is warm and sunny. sea breeze. coastline. even though we get to around 70 degrees on thursday notice as we go through the day, a few more clouds filling the sky from time to time, but i still think we're dry thursday night into friday. there could be a couple of showers around but if we get enough sunshine on friday, near record warmth is possible. forecasting 71 in boston. the record high is 73. the record high is 70 in worcester. so you get the idea. we're going to be flirting with those record high temperatures on friday. and then gusty winds picking up with a cold front on friday evening. that will usher in colder temperatures for the weekend. so upper 50's on saturday. upper 40's for highs on sunday. olessa: reality is returning. cindy: that's right. we still have several days of this nice, warm weather. olessa: a quiet start on the roads this morning. all the overnight construction just out of the way.

if you're heading out the door right now here's the zakim and the leverett connector both problem free this morning. let's check out the rest of that way. 93 south we did have construction at the zakim. that picked up nice and early so did the roadwork on 95 northbound approaching 128. construction cleared on 128 near great plain avenue. on the pike by newton corner. all the roadwork we had on the southbound side of 128 approaching route 2 also cleared nice and early. trains and bus s are starting the morning on schedule. emily: thank you. new scandal tied to the vatican. two insiders accused of leaking internal documents have been arrested. the arrests come as two books reporting corruption at the vatican are set to hit store shelves this week. two books are also due out this week detailing fiscal mismanagement and resistance to the changes that francis has tried to make. the vatican called the books a quote grave betrayal of the pope's trust.

a newspaper of a being involved in the marathon attack. this morning, that young man is breaking his silence. saladin bar hoom was just 16 when "the new york post" put him on the front page, labeled him a "bag man," and said he was being sought in connection with the bombing. the revere teen, who had nothing to do with the attack, sued the paper and settled. now he's a freshman at fitchburg state and trying to move on. reporter: is it over for you? >> yes. of course it's over. now all i'm trying to do is be successful in life and move on. randy: bar hoom plans to share his story with his classmates with a speech on campus later this week. emily: asian stocks break a five-day losing streak overnight. new data indicating a turn in the global economy helped secure those gains. meantime, u.s. stock futures are down at his hour following monday's closing bell. the dow adding 165 points to close at 17,828. more fallout this morning for volkswagon. the company is facing new accusations of cheating on emissions tests. the e.p.a. says the automaker installed software designed to defeat the tests on vehicles

jacket at the bus stop. 40's and even a few 30's at some bus stops this morning. look at that as they're getting off the bus this afternoon. well up into the 60's. lots of sunshine today. 39 out the door right now beverly. we're a cool 35 nashua to bedford. and at the freezing mark in orange. you can see 40's worcester into boston but 30's all the way down to the south coast, the cape, and even martha's vineyard sitting at 35 degrees. it's a chilly start. clear now. you can see there are some clouds across northern new england with a warm front. that's not bothering us. high pressure settling in. we're talking about wall-to-wall sunshine today. temperatures jumping up by late morning up over that 50-degree mark. we should be in the mid 60's here at midday making a run into the upper 60's today in boston. waltham touching that 70-degree mark had afternoon. framingham so close. nashua in the upper 60's as well. mid to upper 60's out through worcester county. about 67 in shrewsbury this afternoon. south of town we'll be in the upper 60's brockton to bridgewater. with that southwesterly wind, the cool spot today will be the

they've taken the lights down. at one point we did hear voices as officers tried to speak with the individuals inside. it's not clear if they're making any progress. we do know that one person inside the house was stabbed. that person was rushed to the hospital. at this hour, traffic is beginning to pick up here on washington street. it's being diverted around the region leading into canton center. but the stand-off, as we know, as we understand, continues at this hour. reporting live from canton, i'm pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: we're following several other breaking stories right now. a deadly shooting is under investigation in dorchester. right now boston police are searching for the gunman who shot a man several times on sheton street just after midnight. randy: also breaking overnight. the black box recordings suggest an emergency situation was taking place on board a russian jetliner right before it crashed in egypt. news agency inter-fax reports the crew was taken by surprise and had no time to issue a

distress call. emily: right now police trying to figure out who put poison toilet cleaner in the bags of two children in hopkinton. the six- and 14-year-olds did not ingest the chemical. randy: new this morning. there is a major change in the works for the commuter rail after this deadly crash. and it comes with a major price tag. emily: the eye's todd kazakiewich is live at south station. todd, this is all about safety? todd: it certainly is. emily, randy, good morning. we're talking about a new system installed on all commuter rail lines that would automatically slow trains down. that system, called "positive train control," is designed to prevent crashes like this one. back in may, an amtrak train derailed in philadelphia killing eight people. federal law already requires that safety mechanism be installed by this year, but congress passed an extension. installation on the commuter rail comes with a price tag of more than $451 million.

part of the financing. it would also require weekend shutdowns on the rails starting in march 2017. the mbta freely admits they do not have the money for this project. it also comes as they are trying to keep costs down without raising fares. reporting live from south station, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: and nothing concrete right now but the massachusetts lottery is considering its own fantasy sports website. mass lotto says sites like draftkings and fanduel pose a threat to lottery revenue. so they want to build their own site to compete. lottery leaders insist they will not drive foot-traffic away from small businesses that rely heavily on lottery sales. that proposal comes as state lawmakers consider regulations on fantasy sports sites. emily: this morning, an apology from one of two teenagers accused of vandalizing an islamic center in burlington.

>> it won't happen again. emily: police say the 18-year-olds confessed to spray-painting graffiti on the building. they say it was a prank, but police call it a hate crime. surveillance video led to the quick arrests. police say the teens also threw eggs at the building and admitted they had been drinking. a local teen is trying to clear his name after rape charges against him were dropped. this morning, he's trying to get his reputation back. in 2013, mondol was accused of raping a teammate with a broomstick at a soccer camp. he maintained his innocence and rejected a plea deal. last april, just days before his trial, an e-mail stated that the district attorney dropped charges. now, the teen is suing the city of somerville, including the mayor. over hess blemished reputation. >> if you were to google my name right now, people who didn't know my situation would still think there were some sort of charges pending against me because there's no coverage and no real acknowledgment that i was wrongfully accused. emily: the mayor's officer

americans right now. a new study is finding that heart disease and diabetes are not to blame. rather an epidemic of suicides, alcohol abuse, and drug overdoses. including heroin and opioids. death rates for white adults between the ages of 45 and 54 have gone up by half a percent each year since 1998. teenagers are having a hard time `disconnecting. common sense media is releasing a study today that shows teens spend an average of nine hours a day on their various devices. a big concern is the number of teens who feel comfortable listening to music or texting while doing homework. the study says two-thirds of teenagers say they listen to music every day, and 58 percent watch t.v. randy: having a family dog could help your kids breathe easier. a new study found that babies who had dogs in the first year of life had a 15% lower rate of asthma than those who did not. exposure to farm animals helped

clear skies. wall-to-wall sunshine. you can see how clear it is this morning on the satellite imagery. just a few clouds up to the stay. high pressure nosing in to southern new england today. we're talking about a bright, sunny day with temperatures coming up into the upper 60's if boston. 69 in nashua. low to mid 60's on cape cod today with a southwesterly wind at about 10-15 miles per hour. tonight it's clear and cool. we're mostly down in the 40's for overnight lows. and tomorrow we will keep the sunshine around, but lighter winds will allow for a sea breeze so upper 50's at the coast. mid 60's inland. it's as we get into thursday and high pressure slides east that we start to see more of a southerly wind. that will bring the temperatures up but also increase the clouds so i think they're looking more clouds by thursday with temperatures though right around 70 degrees. let's get you out to the roads. how are we looking out there. olessa: still in good shape. the delays are starting to pick up across the area. a live look at the expressway. there it is by the gas tank. you can see the northbound side building that rush-hour volume. let's get to the maps. if you're heading south of town so far we're in pretty good shape.

pam cross, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: pam, thank you. also breaking overnight, boston police are searching for a killer after a man was gunned down in dorchester. it happened just after midnight on shepton street. police say the victim was shot several times and died at the scene. we'll bring you new information as we get it. more breaking news. the black box recordings suggest an emergency situation took place on board a russian plane, before it crashed. news agency interfax reports the crew was taken by surprise and had no time to issue a distress call. senior defense officials say an american satellite detected a heat flash at the same time the plane went down over egypt. it could have been an explosion caused by the fuel tank, or a bomb. erika: the brother of the everett football player stabbed trying to help someone says that's just his character. marvens fedna is now in fair condition. he was stabbed in the back and hand coming to the aid of a boy who was being assaulted.

it happened just hours after fedna helped everett high upset st. john's prep in the playoffs. his brother telling "the herald" "that's the type of person he is. anyone who would be in that type of situation, he'd try his best to defend them, or to help out someone screamed for help and he was right there." police are still investigating. todd: the "t" is about to embark on a major safety upgrade for the commuter rail. it is called positive train control. it's designed to prevent accidents like this amtrak train wreck in philadelphia back in may which killed eight people. the safety system automatically slows down trains. even before the crash in philly, congress had mandated that positive train control be installed by this year. but congress then passed an extension for systems across the country. the mechanisms should be installed on the mbta commuter rail by 2020 at a cost of $451 million. some of that will be financed by

federal loans. reporting live from south station, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: thank you. voters in a number of communities across the state are heading to the polls today. that includes in the city of boston where members of city council are on the ballot. there are also mayoral races in play today including a new mayor for medford for the first time since 1988. polls open at 7:00 in boston, but other polling hours vary from town to town. emily: the f.b.i. is on the case of a new hampshire woman murdered on the street. the agency is helping manchester police search for denise robert's killer. she was shot and killed while on a walk in a quiet neighborhood in august. a homeowner in the area says she has signed a consent form allowing police to search her yard. a reward being offered has topped $42,000. randy: four men are on the loose accused in this armed robbery in worcester. you can see one of the suspects waving a knife at the clerk monday night. they stole cash and cigarettes from the edgemere mini mart

before ransacking the place. nobody was hurt. emily: governor charlie baker has signed a $328 million state budget. that includes nearly $28 million for opioid treatment and prevention programs. baker says the extra spending on opioid treatment and prevention is critical given the state's epidemic. the budget also includes more than $3 million for staffing at d.c.f. and training for adoptive and foster families. randy: rehoboth voters have passed a bylaw prohibiting sex offenders from living near schools, day care centers, and recreational facilities. that means anyone with a criminal history of sex offenses is not allowed to live within 500 feet of those establishments. the law will also apply to anyone who has been classified as a level 2 or level 3 offender. emily: this morning, this brockton dog is recovering from multiple stab wounds. the three-year-old pit bull named "havoc" was stabbed at least seven times by a man walking his own pit bull down essex street. the two dogs started to fight each other when the man pulled out a knife. havoc is expected to survive.

brockton animal control is investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed. randy: the navy confirms the wreck found deep in the water off the coast of the bahamas is the missing cargo ship "el faro." right now, the search is focused on finding the ship's "black box" which could reveal what happened before it sank during hurricane joaquin. all 33 crew members were lost. three of them -- jeff mathias, keith griffin, and mariette wright -- had ties to massachusetts. outrage growing this morning after a stunning revelation taxpayers footing the bill for this gas station in afghanistan, dubbed the world's most expensive. the department of defense spent nearly $43 million on the gas station in northern afghanistan and has been unable to explain why it cost so much. emily: the department of education says a school district in illinois is violating antidiscrimination laws by refusing to allow a transgender
