this morning, we launch our new "5 on campaign," "5 on veterans." we' re focusing on the role our military members have played in shaping the country. randy: we' ll feature their stories and also the challenges that many face, and what' s being done to help. there are more than 390,000 veterans living in massachusetts right now, according to the veterans administration. the largest single group is those who served in the vietnam war, nearly 130,000 of them. emily: in our coverage throughout the day we' ll feature personal stories, from veterans of the greatest generation those who fought in vietnam and post -9/11 veterans who struggle with anxiety and stress. you' ll hear how some veterans are using their own experiences to make the road to help and make it easier for others. and see the newest tools in medical and mental health and the research underway to help with treatment. randy: all that' s ahead, but first cindy has the forecast.

rain filling in across the area. heaviest rain is from plymouth to the cape. another band on the northern extent of 495. through the next couple of hours, the focus shifts with the heaviest rain into easternmost massachusetts. we will see the steady rain shift offshore midday. there could be pockets of missed and drizzle near the coast line. temperatures throughout the day, they do not change. notice the wind out of the northeast. 15 to 20 miles per hour. we have a wind advisory up until 7:00 this evening. it is a wet and windy , raw start

start to the commute. so far, we are doing ok. watching a disabled car inside it will be slow. ruth three northbound, expect a little bit of a delay. because of the rain. no major concerns down 93 out of new hampshire. trains and buses on schedule. emily: right now the investigation is underway after a plane slams right into a neighborhood. this morning nine people are , confirmed dead. s erika tarantal is tracking new information as it comes in. erika: that plane crashed right into an ohio apartment building and you can see the results. what we don' t know is why. all of this happening about two miles from the akron airport where it was supposed to land. the flames are now out but

residential area. investigators say there was no indication anything was wrong before the crash. those who live in the area are stunned. >> you do not think a plane would drop in a residential area. this is crazy. erika: remarkably there were no injuries on the ground as the building struck was empty. but the 9 people on board the plane, 2 pilots and 7 passengers were killed. a second building was also damaged. randy? randy: just hours after this showdown, several presidential candidates are preparing to converge on new hampshire. and there will be plenty of new fodder on the campaign trail this morning. the eye' s sera congi is live in manchester with the big moments and the road ahead. sera: donald trump will be the first on the ground here.

all of the candidates fresh off their latest debate which included big issues like the economy and immigration. >> we will have a wall. the wall will be built. it will be successful. if you think they do not work, ask israel. sera: donald trump re-affirming his position that a wall should be built on the u.s.-mexico border and that deportation to illegal immigrants is necessary. former florida governor jeb bush was quick to say he disagrees. >> 12 million illegal immigrants, 500,000 a month, it is not possible. values. sera: another issue brought up last night raising the minimum , wage. frontrunners donald trump and ben carson both stating that they do not support that.

were no complaints about the moderators or the questions. sera congi, newscenter 5. randy: in addition to donald trump, ted cruz, lindsey graham, rick santorum and democrat bernie sanders will attend veterans day events in new hampshire today. emily: right now a charlestown man is facing charges accused of pointing this at a driver during an apparent case of road rage. state police say they found the replica gun inside 20-year-old gary pimentel' s car. another driver says pimentel pointed the gun at her on the ramp from 93 north to mystic avenue. pimentel will be arraigned tomorrow. an update to a story we brought you as breaking news on tuesday' s eyeopener. progress for these protesters demanding higher pay in boston. just hours after protests around the city, a state senate committee advanced a bill that would give workers the minimum wage hike they' re demanding. >> it is a continuing step to

advance the lot of those in our economy at the lower end. >> this is something that can happen. it can happen here, too. emily: yesterday' s protests here mirrored similar demonstrations around the country all calling for a wave tight to $15 an hour. -- calling for a wage irease to $15 an hour. randy: right now a man accused of beating his neighbor' s dog to death is facing animal cruelty charges. neighbors told springfield police saw 66-year-old freddie guy with a metal object possibly a bat going toward two small barking dogs. after hearing a yelp they say guy was standing over a chihuahua, watching as it stopped moving. police arrested guy at his home. >> my mother called me hysterical. she thought it was my dog and was calling him by my dog' s name. the next thing you know, the dog is dead in the front. -- in the front yard. randy: witnesses told police guy always complained about barking

emily: the suspect in a deadly on bail this morning. prosecutors say michael hinds was drunk and driving aggressively on 495 in mansfield on monday when he hit a chevy gmc on the exit ramp. it flipped, killing the driver, jarrad aronne. in norton after leaving the here' s what prosecutors say he told police. >> i smashed into someone. it is not like i killed someone. >> that hurt. emily: aronne' s passenger said incident on their part. police say hinds has been accused of drunk driving at least twice before. new this morning, worcester is moving closer to a new plan to the city' he' s in favor of a clean needle exchange program. gary gemme says that program is needed to fight addiction and the spread of disease.

exchange for years. gemme dismissed arguments that the program would condone drug use. randy: "5 on veterans," a focus on the men and women who have served our country. emily: as you think about veterans today advocates ask that you think about compassion. veterans account for one in every five suicides across the country. in massachusetts, an average of 12 military members take their lives every year. one of the biggest risk groups are veterans between the ages of 18 and 24. they are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than civilians the same age. state officials say whether it' s depression or an issue like homelessness, sometimes simply talking can help. >> remind them, inform them that there is a person , a carrying person in their community looking for them, willing and able to assist them. any veteran is willing to help

another veteran. that makes a difference in their lives. emily: these are some of those veterans who want to help, the state' s veteran services officers. there is one in every city and town in the state. they help veterans get into programs and can help them with care and benefits. the war against red tape. for many veterans, it' s a constant battle that lasts long after they leave the service. but one u-mass lowell student is now using the skills he learned in afghanistan to fight the frustrating process. >> that' s me setting up all the weapons up top in the turret. emily: david tetreault spent a year deployed to afghanistan as part of the massachusetts army national guard. there he mastered leadership, time management, and marksmanship. david when i qualified, i hit : every target. so they said ok, he' s in the gunner seat. emily: back home, he faced another battle, paperwork for federal benefits. david : this is what a veteran would see. you don' t even know what is what. and then boom, you have the application on page 7. emily: a senior at u-mass lowell, david turned his frustration into a business idea using the school' s "difference maker" program. >> we encourage our students to make a difference in an innovative, entrepreneurial way. we coach the students and help them to learn how to create a project that will solve a problem. emily: david now has a team to help design a web platform that

benefits. david so that way, when they : finish answering all of the questions that we have on the platform, this will actually complete the application for them, and they print it out, and they send it to the v.a. emily: david says this idea never would have crossed his mind without his military service. he now hopes to build a non-profit around the new web service, and get his mba. randy: mixed data from china causes asian stocks to fall back slightly overnight. u.s. investors will see if that information will impact wall street. stock futures are mixed this -- are up this morning. the dow added 27 points on tuesday. take advantage of black friday bargains now. best buy has announced that eight of its black friday deals are already available. at wal-mart, the sales have been running since halloween. and target, for the first time ever, will be launching 10 days of black friday bargains starting this sunday. not just that, you' ll be able to pre-order target'

connect younger generations to the military and our troops. the eye' s antoinette antonio is in boston to explain. antoinette: the big concern, many people don' t know or don' t appreciate all our veterans have done and continue to do for this country. these are some of the 25,000 world war ii veterans currently living in massachusetts. their numbers are declining fast. so is the appreciation for what they did. on top of that, today just 1% of the bay state' s population is on active duty. the state' s secretary of veterans affairs says many people just aren' t as aware anymore something he' s trying to , change with this book telling the sacrifices of veterans. >> people do not know what veterans are because there are so many fewer veterans and as so

cindy: great timing. so many people trying to pay tribute with the rain. strongest wind will be right along the coast. it is not just the rain we are talking about. it is the wind. the northeasterly wind as the storm is approaching. the wind is gusting over 20 miles per hour in boston. close to 40 miles per hour in plymouth. a wind advisory through 7:00 this evening. a potential of gusts to 40 miles per hour. it may be enough to create some coastal flooding or splash over. not a big concern. bringing us beneficial rainfall here. our storm is approaching and getting stronger.

to have an event will be donald trump here at the radisson at 8:00 a.m. >> game over for draft kings in the state of new york. they are promising legal action. this comes following a cease-and-desist letter from the new york state attorney general who says draft kings and their rival are part of a multi-billion-dollar scheme to evade the law. draft kings says it is a game of skill and not chance, therefore it is not gambling. antoinette: as the nation marks veterans day newscenter 5 is launching a campaign to honor those who have served. more attention is now focusing on women veterans. their numbers are growing quickly, the only group seeing an increase. veterans officials project that women in the military will more than double over the next 30 years.

skill-related jobs, and availability of v.a. facilities. boston ranked in the top 5 for the most homeless veterans. last year, mayor marty walsh announced a new initiative to put an end to homelessness for vets by the end of this year. randy: a new option for veterans who are students at northeastern university. the school will launch the center for advancement of veterans and service members today. northeastern tells the globe the center will offer mentorship opportunities and help in the transition back to civilian life. emily: the results are in for the first parcc tests in massachusetts. nearly half the districts in the state took the test last year. other districts took the mcas. boston performed well below the statewide average. a vote on making the test a requirement for massachusetts students will be taken next week at the state house. randy: just hours after protests around boston, a state senate committee advanced a bill that would give employees the minimum wage hike they' re demanding. yesterday' s protests mirrored
