randy: i am randy price. emily: i am emily riemer. it is 5 on veterans. we are focusing on the role shaping the country. randy: the challenges many face and what is being done to help. thousands of veterans living in massachusetts right now. the largest single group is vietnam-europe. -- vietnam-era. emily: we will talk about the greatest generation, those who fought in bid, and those who suffer from stress . how getting benefits will be easier for others, and the newest tools in medical and mental health and the research underway to help with treatment. randy: that is ahead, but first the forecast. cindy:

we will bring you information as we get it on the eye . emily: and investigation under way after an airplane slams into a neighborhood. nine people are confirmed dead. antoinette: that -- erika: that airplane crashed into an apartment building. this is two miles from the akron airport. the flames are out but the drew brees still litters this residential area. there was no indication anything was wrong before the crash. those who live in the area are stunned. >> you just don' t think an airplane would drop in a residential area like this. erika: remarkably, there were no injuries on the ground as the tilting that was struck was mc. the nine people on board the plane were killed and a second building was also damaged. randy: hours after this

tonight, he is not ever going to see his kids. he is gone. emily: the passengers said there was not a road rage incident on their part. hinds had been accused of drunk driving at least twice before. randy: focusing on the men and women who have served their country. emily: antoinette antonio is in south boston with the problems many face when they return home and the group offering them help. >> as you think about veterans, advocates ask you think about compassion. veterans account for one in every five suicides. in massachusetts, an average of 12 military members take their lives every year. one of the biggest risk groups are those between the ages of 18 and 24. there are four times more likely to commit suicide and civilians in the same age group.

results. hundreds of votes came from the same i.p. address and most who voted for the orange line color the mbta says it' s not releasing the final results while it looks into the issue. randy: as we continue our focus on veterans today, serious concerns about awareness. there is now a new push to connect younger generations to the eye' s antoinette antonio is in boston to explain. antoinette: the big concern is that many do not know or appreciate all that our veterans do and continue to do for this country. these are some of the 25,000 world war ii veterans currently living in massachusetts. their numbers are decling fast. so is the appreciation for what they did. on top of that, today just one% -- just 1% of the bay state' s population is on active duty. the state'

neighborhood shortly after takeoff. emily: the eyeopener' s erika tarantal is tracking overnight developments. erika: it is a tragic mystery. there is no indication as to why the small business jet went down. the pilot and passengers were all killed. luckily, no one was inside the 4-unit apartment building that it struck or another home that caught fire. a fatality team will recover the victim' s. the airplane took off from dayton and was opposed to land in akron. two miles from where it crashed. a news conference will be held at midday and we will keep you posted on developments. >> the republican residential candidates will hit the ground running in new hampshire, fresh of their fourth debate showdown last night. raising the minimum wage was one of the hot topics.

it is game on for the time being in massachusetts. emily: newscenter 5 is launching a new campaign to put the focus on those who have served. more attention is focusing specifically on women veterans. their numbers are growing quickly. the only group seeing an increase. women in the military will more than double ofthe next 30 years. in massachusetts there are 26,000 women veterans. 7% of the total veteran population. women in the military often need extra help. there are more isolated on deployments and have to return instantly to caregiver roles, increasing the effects of posttraumatic stress. antoinette antonio. emily: our 5 on veterans

at 5:00 inside new and innovative research to treat post-traumatic stress. tackling the problem of homelessness among matter -- among veterans. ed harding introduces us to two men that wound up in the middle of world war ii as teenagers. randy: join me tonight for a special hour-long event. the home base veterans day special will give veterans a chance to share their stories and their struggles and give you a chance to help those who have given so much for our freedom. that' s right here on channel 5 tonight at 7:00. emily: celebrations will be held around boston today. the city may not be the best place for veterans. personal finance social network wallethub ranked boston the 4th worst city in america for vets. the site compared 100 cities on topics like military skill-related jobs, and availability of v.a. facilities. boston ranked in the top 5 for most homeless veterans. last year, mayor marty walsh announced a new initiative to put an end to homelessness for vets by the end of this year. randy: a new option for veterans

who are students at northeastern university. the school will launch the center for advancement of veterans and service members today. northeastern tells "the globe" the center will offer mentorship opportunities and help in the transition back to civilian life. emily: the results are in for the first parcc tests in massachusetts. nearly half the districts in the state took the test last year. other districts took the mcas. boston performed well below the statewide average. a vote on making the test a requirement for massachusetts students will be taken next week at the state house. randy: just hours after protests around boston, a state senate committee advanced a bill that employees the minimum wage hike they have been demanding. yesterday' s protests mirrored similar demonstrations around the country all calling for a wage hikes to $15 an hour. full vaccines may network work as well if you get them every year.
