newscenter 5's man rhondella richardson is live from police headquarters. reporter: those officers could have been seriously injured. you can see the officer hanging out of the car gilbert with you driving and he did drive for uber, company says, a short time. uber admitting their background check initially failed to flag the convicted felon. six suspensions, four license revolve variations and driving endangerment and drug possession charges. it wasn't until his registration expired that the system did a second background check. they go back seven years. if uber was regulated and vented like them, this wouldn't be an issue. >> boston police have authority to check every driver's record going back longer than 10 or 20 years. they have access to those records. uber does not. reporter: uber says "we're

interpret their laws. new york's attorney general calls them multibillion dollar schemes. a small number profit. the top 1% of winners receive the vast majority of the winnings. >> it's a form of gambling. just because it's gambling doesn't make it illegal. there is the stock market. >> regulating a multibillion dollar industry already embedded in the culture and protecting players work better. >> you don't think the game should be taken away and shut down here in massachusetts? >> what i said is that i'm not going to use a several hundred year old criminal statute that was written at a time when this kind of industry was never envisioned. i would like to get beyond that and figure out, here should be the rules. >> are the laws in the two states that different? not likely. legal experts says new york's attorney general has a long legal battle. >> i don't think there is a clear answer on what daily fantasy sports are. i don't think there is an

>> you're watching news at 5:00. >> one person is dead and 14 others injured. it was a house explosion in elizabeth, new jersey. the blast on the second floor happened at 8:00 this morning, and leveled the two family hole. two of the survivors are in critical condition with severe burns. one person is still unaccounted for but may have left the scene on their own. >> to ohio, nine people were killed in this plane crash that you see. investigators are looking at the plane's flight data recorder to see what went wrong the crash happened less than two

as they are seeing it. but it's producing snow and some severe weather. let's take a closer look at that. come over with me and look at that line of thunderstorms. there have been tornado watches cutting right through iowa at this time into northern missouri, and so folks in western illinois also have eastward. look at the backside. that's snow around north platte, nebraska. a cold side, a warm side. but it will be weaker to beware of that line as for us as far as we get it. this is amazing. just since midnight last night. look at. this some of you are saying where is the rain? i thought there would be a lot of rain. barely a 10th of an inch since midnight, but plymouth, 1.75 inches. hyannis, 1.75 inches. boston, just over half an inch. a situation where some got into those bands, particularly around southeastern mass and the cape and some did not as much. boston was kind of right in the middle. still seeing some rain and drizzle along parts of the south

shore in the area around when i show you the wider view, as we show you the loop notice shrinking with time. the mist that's around in some spots will gradually come to an end tonight but i'm not sure the skies will completely clear because we saw kind northeast northerly wind and atmosphere and it's still moist. cool 47. cool and raw. because it's been so warm so much this month. winds still pretty gusty on the cape but when we throw in the gusts we still see gusts to 39 miles per hour in nantucket. hyannis. wind advisory on nantucket until temperatures, not much to pick. cape. low temperatures. generally in the 40s on the coast. tomorrow's high temperature, i'm thinking

like 50 to 55. notice, a lot of clouds. maybe limited sun in some areas in the first part of the day. i can't even guarantee that but most of us will see showers before the day is out. we go back to this system again because that's the one that moves eastward and there is a front attached to it. so what happens, if you look in the afternoon, you will see the first of the showers moving through the region and then ending later tomorrow night. front comes through and that's going to set us up for a very friday. it won't be that cold but when this secondary front comes through friday night, that will usher in some breezy and colder weather for saturday. so there is your story tomorrow. still keep the umbrella handy for some afternoon showers. what am i talking about? even though boston may reach 59 degrees. check out the gusts. early in the day, they could be 20 to 30 miles per hour. the south coast, cape and islands, that's where the gusts could be strongest in excess of 40 miles per hour. wind advisories might be needed. we'll see how it goes. saturday will also be a breezy day but at least a dozen degrees
