>> you made it buddy. good boy. emily: a happy ending to a big scare for a taunton family. their dog fell 25 feet down a well and stayed there overnight. randy: the eye' s erika tarantal joins us with the rescue. erika: this one required a lot of patience from firefighters. one of them got a little bit hurt. watch as they hoisted 2-year-old buddy out of a foot of water. he fell in the well on monday but didn' t make a lot of noise , so no one knew where he was. it wasn' t until the next day that the kids figured out what was wrong and the rescue got underway. >> i started talking to the dog and telling him it is ok buddy. that happened to be his name. in the tricky rescue but he' going to be ok. the family just happy to have buddy back safe this morning.

randy: newscenter 5 continues coverage on our veterans. there are nearly 40,000 veterans in massachusetts. many of them serving in iraq and afghanistan. but for some coming home doesn' t always end the fight. since the war on terror began 14 years ago prescriptions for addictive pain medicines given to military members have skyrocketed. one study shows illicit drug use has more than doubled. investigative reporter kathy curran spoke with two veterans who struggled with addiction at home. both say their drug use began while serving in iraq. >> xanax to sleep. opioids, pains. >> morphine, heroin. >> we went from being one of the most respected people as a "hard-core -- or a junkie.

emily: 4:55 this morning. we are following breaking news overnight. randy: a state trooper and one other person are hurt after a wrong-way crash. this was the scene overnight along route 6 in barnstable. troopers responding to a wrong way driver at around 11:30. trying to slow oncoming traffic when the driver struck a cruiser. that driver is said to have had medical issues. both he and the trooper taken to the hospital with minor injuries. emily: a suspect is dead after a shootout in baltimore. police say two officers came across a man with a gun in the street last night. they say the man then shot at the officers, hitting one in the leg. one of the officers fired back and killed the suspect. the injured officer is expected to be ok.

randy: investigators are working to find the cause of this fire that destroyed a historic new hampshire inn. the owner had to be carried to safety as smoke filled the armont inn in campton early yesterday morning. a neighbor called 911 after hearing popping sounds and seeing flames. nobody was seriously hurt. emily: one person is dead more than a dozen hurt after a home explodes in new jersey. it happened yesterday morning at a multi-family home in the town of elizabeth. investigators say someone inside the house may have been illegally tapping into a natural gas line. gaping sinkhole in a parking lot in mississippi. the lot caved-in on saturday , swallowing at least 12 an expert says the 30-foot hole collapsing because of new construction in the area. incredibly nobody was hurt. randy: former boston sportscaster bob lobel is suing a newton golf course claiming discrimination. lobel says the woodland golf club is wrongly denying his

national forest in alaska. it was cut on october 27, expected to arrive next week. it will be lighted on december 5. when you have that much that rating to do, you have to get it early. emily: that is true. only one holiday at a time. i am just like let' s get to thanksgiving. cindy: last week we were talking about temperatures in the 70' s. yesterday was the first date that our high temperature was below average. a little reality check settling in. the cool air coming in with rain. we did get up to two inches. boston just a half inch. worcester, not even a quarter of an inch. we needed that rainfall. look at where we stand, still a .5 inches below average . -- still 8.5 inches below average in boston.
