it could make for a tough commute. cindy's tracking it all right now. good morning, i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price. cindy is watching it closely. cindy: we are indeed. from west to east over the next few hours. we are in it now. look here down along the south shore. look at weymouth. real heavy downpours through foxborough and bridgewater and follow that line down to the coast of rhode island. this is lifting northward here along our frontal boundary ahead of it. you get back toward the worcester area and we see it up again with the shower activity. once you get west of there, things are winding down. the rain shuts off and the sun comes out this afternoon. notice through 6:00 this morning here in the next hour, heavy downpours up and down the coastline. by 8:00 this morning, i think we're drying it out in boston. southeastern massachusetts

champney street, in the oak square neighborhood. firefighters are now looking for a cause. one firefighter was taken to the hospital for evaluation. right now: horror and heartache after a local teen is murdered in a terror attack in israel. randy: loved ones grieving the loss this morning. the eyeopener's sera congi is live in sharon, where the community is searching for answers. reporter: andy and emily, there are two communities mourning this loss, here in sharon where he grew up and in brookline where he just graduated school this year. he then traveled to israel to deliver food for soldiers. the sharon teenager was one of five people killed in the attack yesterday. police say a palestinian man opened fire and rammed his car into a group of pedestrians. the teen's high school, still trying to grapple with the news. there are whole school went into shock. the middle school and upper school immediately canceled

classes and everybody came together to pray. >> why this young, vibrant man, why was he cut down? really, at 18 years old. reporter: his rabbi says ezra was drawn to israel to study for a year before going to college. the rabbi is now calling on religious leaders around the world to condemn act of violence. randy: 5 investigates learning a hearing will be held today for the man charged with stealing guns from a worcester armory. his name is james walker morals. center until he was arrested in may on sex assault charges, and a gps bracelet when he broke night. blood stains matching his dna were found inside.

the republican presidential candidate telling a reporter in iowa, if elected president he would create a mandatory registry to track muslims in the u.s. since the attacks in paris, trump has called for new restrictions on civil liberties and enhanced surveillance including inside mosques. randy: a hit list with the names of several students in seekonk is being investigated by police. they say the list threatened to "cause harm to others." high school students and families involved in the list have been notified. the school is working closely with police to make certain appropriate steps are taken to ensure the safety of all students. emily: a tree cutter is recovering after a crane accident in merrimack, new hampshire. his equipment was cutting trees when the crane hit a septic tank, opening a sinkhole. the crane crashed into the roof of this home. no one inside was hurt but a worker was left dangling from a tree. he suffered a foot injury and was taken to the hospital. five on the opioid crisis. rochester, new hampshire taking

the rain has been adding up. it is with us here for the next few hours. but it is gone. a cooler weekend overall with a few showers on sunday so weekend. 58 plymouth. 53 in worcester. mid 50's to southern new hampshire as well. the wind has been gusty at times bringing in the abnormally mild temperatures. we have some of the heavier downpours working in. from broxton marshfield to weymouth, this is all lifting northward. cape ann will be getting in on this. everything is lifting from south to north. starting to dry out south of worcester. the rain will shut off and behind the front, notice how it cools down into the 30's and 40's. that is the air mass working on in. a little bit breezy in afternoon

common issues facing men and women working at the state department of corrections. the department of correction taken their own lives in the past 4 1/2 years. investigative reporter kathy curran spoke with a correction officer who lost one friend to suicide, and was able to help another who was desperate and depressed. >> he said i've got a gun inside my nightstand and he said i really thought about using it a couple of types. finish myself off. i didn't want to live through another loss of a friend. emily: the department of corrections wouldn't do an interview, but tells 5 investigates in a statement they're trying to better understand how the stress affects their employees, and how they can provide more support. randy: 5: 18. a warning from the nation's largest health care provider. united health says it may opt out of national health care after 2016. the move would force millions of people to find coverage some place else. united health offers one of the lowest cost plans in the country right now. the company blames the affordable care act for giving individuals too much flexibility

>> the pictures are devastating. the u grim plight of syrian refugees has captured the world's attention but now is the time to pause and take a collective breath. this week it was revealed that one of the isis terrorists in paris entered europe enconscioused within the flood of syrian refugees. lacking legal authority, nearly 2/3 of u.s. governors are closing their borders to any syrian refugees including massachusetts and nanch. the governor's hesitance, while perhaps an overreaction is understandable in a time of necessary caution. while questioning the voracity of america's vetting process, many fear any intake of syrian refugees will be a trojan horse allowing jihaddists to unleash terror on u.s. soil. the you aren't u.s. process

vetting through several federal agencies. yet the severity of this crisis has the president saying he will accept 10,000 refugees and thus enhancing the risk. republicans are joining the governors' resistance movement. the debate rages on. in this new age of terrorist warfare, sleeper cells and suicide bombers and increpted technology, the process by which our government scrutinizes residents if any country should be adapted and strengthened. let's not however respond to either the paris tragedy or the refugee crisis in a knee-jerk fashion. as a nation of immigrants demagoguery from all sides will not solve this issue.

emily: the eyeopener's frank holland is live in cambrdge where students are fighting back. >> this morning, students are turning the tables as campus police investigate who did this. the defaced portraits were discovered thursday morning at wassarstein lecture hall. angered over the message of hate, last night students decorated the portraits with messages of love and support. this one reads "amazing professor, mentor and role model" and this one "you are brilliant and loved". >> i also think it is important to show students of color and everyone in the community acts of hatred or expressions of racism won't go unresponded to. >> the dean of harvard law has however, students say harvard was slow to act only after feeling pressure made time to discuss the incident. randy: a medical scare for providence, rhode island mayor buddy cianci. he collapsed during the

day after some graphic testimony focusing on the moments before and after the 24-year-old teacher was murdered. yesterday the jury heard from a freshman student who was with the danvers teacher just before she was murdered. the now 16-year-old said she told ritzer "how she was such a nice person." prosecutors say phillip chism also stayed after school that day and once the other student left he followed rtizer to the restroom and killed her. a janitor also took the stand explaining that a language barrier is the reason he cleaned up the bloody bathroom. chism's attorney has been mounting an insanity defense saying he was suffering murder. the trial resumes later on this morning. randy: thank you. a warning for home depot

psychosis at the time of the murder. randy: thank you. breaking overnight, convicted spy jonathan pollard has been released now from a federal prison. he will be released today rather. he was jailed for giving classified information to israel 30 years ago. he was required to stay in the united states for at least five years. emily: a hearing will be held today for this man charged with stealing guns from a worcester armory. 5 investigates learning james walker morales was based at the army reserve center until his discharge in 2013. he was arrested in may on sex assault charges, and investigators say he was wearing a g.p.s. bracelet when he broke into the armory saturday night. were found inside. he was tracked down in long island, new york wednesday night. the telegram reporting he is the same man charged are leaving a

center years ago. he was arraigned and declined to pay fines saying he was unemployed. randy: don't miss donald trump as he and his wife melania sit down for an exclusive interview with barbara walters on "20/20." that's tonight at 10 o'clock right here on channel 5, followed by newscenter 5 at 11. emily: a warning this morning -- about products sold at home depot for years after they'd been recalled. 28 recalled products were sold between 2012 and 2015. they range from cables to shop lights to garage door openers. the consumer product safety commission warns that home depot also sold the recalled goods to salvagers and recyclers who may have passed them on to consumers. randy: social media site facebook is trying to help you through a break-up. the company is testing a new "breakup protection" tool that saves users from constantly seeing their former partner's posts and pictures, as they scroll down their feeds. users would also be allowed to remove their names from posts

emily: tis the season -- boston's christmas tree will arrive at the common today. the 50-foot spruce from nova scotia is expected around 11 this morning. the gifted tree is part of an annual tradition dating back to 1918. you can see the tree lighting right here on wcvb. randy: an unexpected and heartfelt gift for boston police. they're thanking the woman who gave an officer this gift. the officer was working construction detail when a driver pulled over and handed her this hand-painted rock. the woman, who is only identified as ms. lee, says she makes the gifts for police officers and firefighters because she is thankful for their service. emily: very kind. cindy, rainy. cindy: mother nature not so kind this morning. we need the rain, don't get me wrong. worcester on westward it is not raining anymore but we do have fog. boston a little tough to see with the rain coming down.

but it is mild. 55 degrees thanks to that southerly wind. worcester 53. upper 50's, plymouth, 56 as your heading out in hyannis right now. staying in the 50's all day long. notice the rain is with us through 9:00 a.m. and then that is it. skies brighten up with sunshine developing this afternoon as the winds turn to the north and west. the heavy downpours now. nashua up to winchester. lighter rain around boston now. a little heavier to the south taurt weymouth and marshfield and lakefield and new bedford as well. all of this is lifting up from the south. by the next few minute or so, we're going to continue to see heavier downpours shift over cape cod through 8:00 this morning and thereafter from west to east, the rain will be winding down and the skies brightening up.

look at the temperature. 50's, 40's, 30's and 20's toward minneapolis. tonight we're in the twenty and 30's. tomorrow we're only recovering in the 40's. despite the sunshine. it is the brighter day of the weekend. we'll watch the frontal boundary approach. i only expect a few showers. notice there is a wave of low pressure from the south. that may keep steadier showers going into southeastern massachusetts through sunday evening. we'll clear it out on monday and then dry weather. chilly but dry for the big travel week next week and it looks like we're dry, up to around 50 by thanksgiving day thursday. just have to get through this rain. it is tough on the commute. olessa: not a pleasant ride. thank you, cindy. seeing that heavy volume. let's get over to the maps and check the rest of your trip. an accident 128 northbound. winter street.
