8:01 am
let's get through sunday though first because this morning we're waking up to some cloudy skies and some showers around the area especially down along south eesh mass. you've been seeing them all morning long from new bedford to falmouth to hyannis. all the way up to provincetown. all of this is lifting from south and west to the north and east. a couple of hit-or-miss sprinkles through framingham up county here. north and east. so we're going to leave showers in the forecast beginning this morning with heavier rain coming from this developing area of low pressure as we head through the afternoon into the evening. so rain chances on the way up through the day today. lingering early tomorrow morning for the cape and the islands. otherwise then we dry out and we start to really cool down. temperatures right now are in the 30's and 40's and even 50's on nantucket. so trying to work some milder air in. that will be the case through

todd: five people were rushed to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. this fire spread so quickly that several people had to be rescued including two children. firefighters got the call at 5:30 saturday night. patricia jhurilal got the call a few minutes later that 9 greenwood avenue-- the hyde park home she grew up in and where her mother, sister, and brother still live-- was burning. patricia: all i knew was when i got the phone call that they were taking my mother to the hospital, i was just, you know, i was so scared. i thought about, you know, the tenants, the kids. but thank god, everybody got out and everybody is safe. >> there were 10 total people in the house is my understanding and all of them got out. four of them on the ladders and the rest evacuated. all he have them led out by firefighters. todd: two children were among the four people rescued by firefighters. investigators believe the fire started in the basement. it was fueled by gas propelling flames up through the house. the threat of a collapse forced firefighters to attack the fire from the outside only. the flames destroyed not just the triple decker but a home that three generations of one family lived in. >> we grew up in the house. my kids grew up in the house.

so it's hard. we just lost my dad a couple of months ago. his ashes are in there, all his pictures and everything. we lost everything. todd: the boston fire department will stay on scene until sunday morning just in case there are any hot spots. the fire chief estimates the damage from the fire at $850,000 and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. reporting in hyde park, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: this is the second serious fire in hyde park in 24 hours. three boston firefighters were injured battling a house fire on river street. the firefighters were treated and released yesterday morning. the red cross assisted two residents displaced by that fire. frank: right now police are searching for the driver behind a deadly hit and run. the man was struck along route 18 in new bedford early yesterday morning. the victim, who has not been identified, was rushed to the hospital but he died several hours later. police are on the lookout for a royal blue s.u.v. with front end

(sighing) i just don't want to deal with it yet. frank: nothing compared to last year. antoinette: true but that doesn't mean that we want it heading our way right now. danielle: one of the top five snowstorms in the month of november for the chicago area. i mean it's kind of impressive for them. we aren't seeing that cold side of the storm. we're not seeing the snow. we're seeing the warmer side so it's all about the rain this morning. we're seeing some showers already popping up on the maps. the cold side of the storm now up in canada giving us snow showers for those folks but for us it's all about the cold front and that second area of low pressure that's going to give us some steady rain as we head through the afternoon today and into the evening. right now a couple of showers popping up on our local live radar.
8:15 am
southeastern mass the entire morning. mashpee seeing a good downpour. all of this moving across the cape at this point. a little bit more near the vineyard too. down along the south shore near bridgewater you're picking up a couple of spot showers. then in and around just, say, south and east of framingham headed toward norwood, you're seeing a couple of light showers and more up through parts of worcester county and up toward the border moving into new hampshire. as we go through the day today, here's what's going to happen. the bulk of the rain showers this morning pushing towards the cape. by lunchtime. notice north and west of worcester, actually seeing a break in the cloud deck. so we are talking about maybe some breaks of sunshine although i'm cautiously optimistic about that. by 2:00, showers start to ramp on up. you notice by 5:00, 6:00, they are heavy and steady especially boston and points south and east. worcester, you look to be
8:16 am
but there will be a sharp cut-off where this line of showers really sets up. north and west of it, you will then stay dry but south and east , you will be in on the rain and it continues through the evening hours and into the overnight. you notice once we get past midnight colder air will be working its way in. so some of this may flip over to a few wet snow flakes at the tail end. of course, this is all dependent on whether we get enough cold air in here as well as enough heavy, steady rain to fall to bring down that cold air. i do think most of us just end up with some chilly rain showers throughout the evening and into the overnight. when all is said and done, notice the concentration of the rain is on the cape and islands picking up one to maybe upwards of two inches. then there's that sharp cut-off north and west of worcester essentially where you're rarely going to see anything at all. over boston right now, this is
8:17 am
morning is what i'm hearing. cloudy skies. 47 degrees. and temperatures today will warm up into the low 50's and a few mid 50's along the south shore. so it is a mild day on tap. should be running around 50 degrees or 49 degrees this time of year. and then for tonight, here comes that cold air really pushing in so we're talking about 20's in a lot of spots and 30's in and around boston. and then tomorrow the big difference is it's going to be cold out there. 40 degrees for your high temperature although some places may stay in the 30's and if you're headed out to gillette tomorrow night, bundle up. layer up. because wind chill values will be in the teens. if you're watching this game from the comfort of your own home, be sure to tune in to channel 5 because that is where we will be at 8:30. we'll say go pats. a lot of sunshine through the thanksgiving.

country. a washington, d.c., polling operation called "morning consult" says baker has a 74% approval rating among bay state voters. other governors in new england aren't scoring as well. connecticut governor dan malloy, a democrat, comes in at 36% while new hampshire governor maggie hassan, who's running for u.s. senate, had a 57% approval rating. >> now sportscenter 5 with bob halloran. bob: good morning, everyone. even on ice, tuukka rask could feel the heat. back-up goalie jonas gustavson winning four of his five starts and giving up a goal a game less than rask. it was time for tuukka time. he delivered with his second shutout of the year against toronto last night at the garden. rask was the hockey version of the pitchers' duel. both guys pitching shutouts deep into the third period. that was rask's best. 3:43 to go in the game, still scoreless. chara unload from close range. no way for reimer to top that

more after the break. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: the pictures are devastating. the grim plight of syrian refugees, fleeing terrorism in their own country, has captured the world's attention. but now is the time to pause and take a collective breath. this week it was revealed that at least one of the isis terrorists in paris entered europe ensconced within the flood of syrian refugees. in a largely partisan response, and lacking legal authority, nearly two thirds of u.s. governors are closing their borders to any syrian refugees including massachusetts and new hampshire. the governor's hesitance, while perhaps an overreaction, is understandable in a time of necessary caution. while questioning the veracity of america's vetting process, many fear any intake of syrian refugees will be a "trojan horse," inviting jihadists to unleash death and destruction on u.s. soil. and in contrast to europe's system, with much more porous

process already requires up to two years of vetting through several federal agencies. yet the severity of this crisis has the president saying he will accept 10,000 refugees, presumably on an expedited basis and thus enhancing the risk. congressional republicans are joining the governors' resistance movement, and the debate rages on. it makes sense to continue to scrupulously screen refugees. in this new age of terrorist warfare fought through sleeper cells, suicide bombers and encrypted technology, the process by which our federal government scrutinizes immigrants from any country should itself be closely examined, updated, and strengthened, adapting to an ever-changing era of global conflict. let's not, however, respond to either the paris tragedy, or the refugee crisis, in a knee-jerk fashion. as a nation of immigrants, demagoguery from all sides will not solve this issue. above all else, as we debate the correct course of action, let's also protect the values that

antoinette: 8:43. welcome back. it's a place many homeless veterans turn to for much-needed services, shelter, and a safe place to live. frank: but as "5 investigates" kathy curran tells us, some veterans believe the center that has millions in the bank is leaving our soldiers behind. kathy: in the shadow of boston's city hall, you'll find some of the most vulnerable men and women who served our country seeking shelter at the new england center for homeless veterans where they promise them
8:43 am
resident: none of that has come true. kathy: bed bug infestation. city records from the past two-and-a-half years. there are hundreds of calls to boston police for reports including illegal drugs, assaults, and illegal firearms. more than 400 emergency medical calls last year. other records show the center is infested with bed bugs. there are roaches in the kitchen, rats in the basement, and mice. steve kelly is an army veteran who has been renting a room here for four years. kelly: many, many veterans who really need help do not go there because the conditions are so bad. andrew mccawley: if you look at the general condition of our living areas, you will see that they're certainly not luxurious. they're not palacial, but i think they meet standards of sanitation. kathy: andrew mccauley is the c.e.o. of the center that offers more than just shelter to veterans including employment assistance and substance abuse counseling. some veterans are saying that they don't even want to come in here at night, but it's the only place they have to go. mccawley: certainly i'm very concerned about the services, the living conditions, and the

support that we provide veterans. resident: i itch all over. it's a constant struggle. kathy: this veteran says bed bugs have left welts and scars all over his arms and legs. he didn't want to be identified for fear of retaliation. other veterans we spoke with sent video and photos showing a cockroach climbing the wall and dirty, ripped mattresses. their lives on the line for america, for freedom. they deserve much better than in right now. kathy: we also discovered 32 men who live or work at the center are registered sex offenders. most of them level 3's who are considered the most likely to re-offend. the band played at the center's signature $275-a-plate gala. according to financial records, it's just part of the millions in donations and grants pouring in each year. in may the center began a $32 million renovation.

the project will modernize the century-old building and create an additional 35 permanent apartments for veterans in need. mccawley: the veterans live here for as long as it's necessary for us to help them get into permanent, independent living. kathy: this is where hundreds of homeless veterans sleep at night. here's where they'll be staying in the future. kelly: you look into the future, but did you really have to sacrifice us for that? kathy: as far as the constant bed-bug issue, the center plans to buy special bed-bug-resistant mattresses to help with the problem. the renovation is supposed to be completed in about a year. kathy curran, "5 investigates." >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist danielle vollmar. danielle: good morning. well, it's a wet start out there for some. we have a medium chance for some rain. it will be increasing though as we head through the afternoon into the evening. especially south and east of worcester.
8:46 am
lingering showers especially early for the cape and the islands before we clear everybody out. as for what's happening right now, i want to zoom you in to a couple of showers ongoing on the vineyard. just north of falmouth, headed towards hyannis. bourne, you're getting in on some of this light rain activity. also south of the mass pike, just south of framingham near franklin, norwood, and more showers back through even worcester county near the city of worcester and then as you drive up 495 running into some near lowell and pepperell. and then more near north reading, beverly to woburn, showers. it's very light in nature right now. but heavy, steadier rain is headed in our direction. it's all due to this area of low pressure to the south. it will ride along the cold front and bring us that rain so you this morning. there will be hit-or-miss showers around, say, about lunchtime or so. notice north and west of worcester though, you're
8:47 am
actually seeing some clearing in the cloud deck so we may even see some breaks of sunshine. you folks may even stay dry all day long because there will be a sharp cut-off with this shield of rain as it moves on in. i think it's mainly boston and points south and east really seeing that heavy rain. it continues through the evening and even into the overnight. as it pulls down cooler air, this model is trying to bring in some wet snow flakes mixing in. it will take a lot. it will take heavy, steady rain and also that cold air is really going to have to work its way in wet snow flakes. it could happen, but i really think most of us just see a steady, chilly, heavy rain especially the cape and the islands where you could see upwards of one to two inches of rain but all this area in green has a chance for seeing some rain. as you look at boston right now it's cloudy right now. it's a showery sunday. much cooler though for your monday and then as we head towards thanksgiving, we start to warm up and turn milder for

danielle: welcome brook. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. you can see rain drops on the camera. it's a gray sky. unfortunately more rain is in the forecast through the day today. if you're headed out, i would grab some rain gear. it's really hit-or-miss this morning. steadier rain coming this afternoon. it's mainly south and east of worcester that we'll see that rain really move in associated with that area of low pressure. the other thing to talk about is the temperatures. it's been a mild month so far in november. it will be mild today but temperatures are really going to take a tumble starting tomorrow. take a look at that cold air over chicago and minneapolis. that is headed in our direction.

overnight. right now because it's really hit-or-miss showers, not everyone seeing them. but there are a couple of downpours, say, near the vineyard. also near hyannis. now you're seeing some there. and then more along the south shore near bridgewater to brockton up towards norwood, seeing some. attleboro seeing some as well. the farther north you go towards the north shore, you're seeing some in beverly. ipswich. moving towards cape ann. all of this is lifting really to the north and east. that's what the latest models are saying. we have generally showers east of worcester this morning. now as we get towards lunchtime, there may be a little bit of a break. there may even be some breaks in the cloud deck the farther north and west you go. so you may even see some peeks of sunshine. once we get towards 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, more rain showers redevelop. you start to see some heavier bands especially southeastern mass, the cape, the islands getting in on some of that. it continues through the evening
9:13 am
and overnight but notice there's going to be a sharp cut-off with this. nose of you that live north and west of worcester may not see any rain at all later today whereas boston, points south and east maybe see heavy downpours through the evening and even into the overnight. colder air will work its way in. i think this model is way overdone but there could be some wet snow flakes at the tail end of this if we get the precipitation to fall at a heavy enough clip and also if we get cold enough air to really work its way in. the timing is really key on this. if not though, i do think it will still be a chilly rain through the evening and overnight. we're expecting one to two inches of rain potentially for the cape and islands. notice north and west of worcester really not much in the way of rain at all. we could really use the rain down near nine inches now for the year in boston. 7.5 inches now for the year in worcester. as you look at boston, we are very cloudy. low-level clouds. this is what most of our area looks like this morning.
9:14 am
it's 47 degrees though. so we're mild. temperatures today will warm up into the 50's and upper 40's in worcester county. but look at tonight. overnight lows starting in the 20's and 30's. when you step outside the door first thing tomorrow. and it continues to be on the cool side through the day tomorrow. in fact, tomorrow highs are going to struggle to make it to right around 40 degrees so if you are headed out to gillette stadium tomorrow night for the pats' game they're taking on the buff bills at 8:30 make sure you layer up. if you're watching it from the comfort of your own home i'm with you on that one because it's a little too cold for me. that being said you have to watch channel 5 beginning at 8:30 for that game. go, pats! temperatures will moderate by midweek into the mid 40's. it will be in the low 50's actually by thanksgiving and black friday so it's milder at the week's end. frank and antoinette. antoinette: we can handle that, danielle. thank you. time now is 9:17. some of the stors happening right now. frank: minneapolis police are concerned about protests following a deadly police

condition. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meteorologist danielle vollmar. danielle: it is a gray, damp start out there for most of us especially east of worcester where we're experiencing showers now more of them becoming numerous especially over the vineyard. a couple of downpours actually over the atlantic ocean right now. that's headed towards the outer cape. we also have some showers along the south shore from scituate down to marshfield back through bridgewater. more of them have developed along the north shore near beverly, gloucester and even ipswich. so if you are headed out, i would definitely have the rain gear around because as we head through the afternoon, the showers become more numerous and steady from this area of low pressure down to the south. it's going to ride along the cold front and bring us the steady rain. it really doesn't start though ramping up until late afternoon, i think. so by lunchtime, you see north and west of boston or excuse me of worcester we could actually have some breaks of sunshine out
9:39 am
you folks may stay dry throughout the entire day. there will be a sharp cut-off with this area of rain that does develop. notice that the latest model really coming into boston although worcester could get in on this. it's pretty much inside of 495. that the heaviest downpours will be. watch the tail end of this. it's been indicating all day long that we've been having the chance for some wet snow flakes mixing on in. of course, that's going to depend on how heavy the precipitation is coming down as well as if we can bring down that colder air in enough time to get some wet snow flakes mixing in. i do think for sure it will be a chilly rain with the heaviest rain amounts remaining on the cape and the islands but all this area in green has a chance of seeing some steady rain through the afternoon. it's much cooler for monday. we warm up though by thanksgiving. so even though the coldest air mass all season works its way in for tomorrow, it doesn't last that long. today temperatures will warm up.

in a largely partisan response, and lacking legal authority, nearly two thirds of u.s. governors are closing their borders to any syrian refugees including massachusetts and new hampshire. the governor's hesitance, while perhaps an overreaction, is understandable in a time of necessary caution. while questioning the veracity of america's vetting process, many fear any intake of syrian refugees will be a "trojan horse," inviting jihadists to unleash death and destruction on u.s. soil. and in contrast to europe's system, with much more porous borders, the current u.s. process already requires up to two years of vetting through several federal agencies. yet the severity of this crisis has the president saying he will accept 10,000 refugees, presumably on an expedited basis and thus enhancing the risk. congressional republicans are resistance movement, and the debate rages on. it makes sense to continue to scrupulously screen refugees.
