buffalo 20-13 and our live coverage begins with sportscenter 5's mike lynch. lynchie, how did the pats pull through? mike: they have enough people, next man up. james white was one of them. there are a number of concerns tonight, number one, the left knee of danny amendola. he left after he fielded a punt and called fair catch, grabbed his leg and left, not to return. tom brady was hurried, he was sacked. he threw a lot of passes and didn't have the time he usually has but the patriots, as they win, 20-13 the final in this one. brady was ripping into his offense when he came off the field a number of times. he can't find anybody open. buffalo has a pretty good secondary. meanwhile, key play, 13 seconds remaining in the first half, brady to james white who was he's in. the pats have a 10-3 lead. play.
12:07 am
watch brady throw the ball right here, the whistle blows. apparently thought tom brady was out of bounds. danny amendola is wide open. perhaps he could have scored a touchdown. the referees ruled inadvertent whistle and they had a game for the patriots. lesean mccoy powers his way in and it's 10-10. that was two minutes later. then brady, with a big pass to danny amendola deep into territory. the patriots didn't huddle. way into the end zone, putting the patriots on top 20-10. buffalo with a field goal. the final, 20-13. so the patriots move to 10-0 on patriots are 10-0, carolina panthers are 10-0. two undefeated teams. more importantly, the patriots open more distance between themselves and the a.f.c. east
12:08 am
and can clinch the a.f.c. east with a win, and if some other things happen next sunday night when they play the broncos in denver. we're awaiting appearances by bill belichick and tom brady. as soon as we have those, we'll return live from gillette stadium. ed: everyone is talking about the inadvertent whistle in the third quarter. it swayed the momentum of the game. what it was like in the stadium when that happened? mike: it was stunning. we were looking at it, asking, why did the whistle blow? we thought someone blew it from the stands. you watch the replay over and over again, brady wasn't close to stepping out of bounds. i don't know if the official anticipated he would go out of bounds and blew the whistle to protect him from getting hit, but this wasn't close. take a look, brady scrambling to his right, and there it is -- let's it go. there was one other defender

12:24 am
tom: we have a lot of things in the playbook. that's one of them. reporter: was that meant to shock him or send a message? tom: no, just communication on offense. we use a lot of terms. reporter: unusual, though. tom: we've used a lot of things in the past. we have a lot of unusual terms. i think we run the gamut. we have to get creative and think of different things. that one's unique. reporter: what did you see happen on the inadvertent whistle and how frustrating is that? tom: just one of those plays. i don't know what happened. i was rolling and danny did a good job springing free. he made a great play. he makes play after play for us. i really don't know what happened. we were on the sideline and he spun free so that ended up being a good play for us. i wish we could have converted it into more points. reporter: did they think
12:25 am
were out of bounds? tom: i don't know. reporter: we talked about this a little bit during the week, you can't just expect everything to move as smoothly and crisply as it had for the first nine weeks with the changes. did you expect it to be tough tom: yes. i think we did. but i don't think that's an excuse. think some of the things that we didn't do well have nothing to guys. we just got to do things in better, if we want to score more points and i talk about execution, being on the same page. there were a lot of plays where we didn't necessarily do our job very well and if you don't do it well, no one else can make up for what you're trying to do so there's a lot of critical plays that we left out on the field against a good defense and i think they do a good job challenging you because they've got good players and a good scheme and if you're not on top of everything, they make you

play. there were a lot of plays that were uncontested. we we didn't really have much of a chance. >> you got guys going down left and right from the skill position. how difficult is it to get rob free on some of the routes. you make a great throw late in the game dropping it in like a bucket but you're in the stage where it's critical mass for you on the outside, teams doubling and tripling. talk about how hard it is to get him open? tom: we've lost a lot of guys and we will figure out how to win. it's good to win against a good defense. any way you can get these wins, i think it's positive. we have to have confidence in what they're doing and gronk has a lot of confidence in him. if two guys go on him, other guys have to step in and make plays. we made some. i think we left some out there. we'll review the film. we're playing against a good team next week. see if we can do better. feels good to win. it's obviously hard to get to this point.
12:27 am
every team goes through different things and we've withstood a lot. keep fighting. reporter: would you say you're still trying to figure things out, how to do things without certain players? or was it all just execution tonight? tom: it was, i think a lot of execution and we could do better. we lost danny during the game. we lost dobson during the game and we're down to two healthy receivers so it's -- you get pretty limited quickly in the things that you can do. we still played hard and fought hard. we've got to try to review some things and see if we can play better next week. thank you. mike: patriots quarterback tom brady, when asked to explain the inadvertent whistle, he said, i don't know. he was standing there, having a conversation, explaining things to the referee and the referees huddled. they had so many huddles

tonight, i thought they were taping one of those discount double checks for state farm, the commercial where all the officials are standing around and they say, you scratch your head, the microphone is on. that's what it looked like. the referees were booed a number of times in conference. big, big gain. tom brady was not happy about it. he didn't want to talk about. it he obviously knows more than he let on in the press conference but they got out of dodge with the win. we'll be back with bill belichick comes to the podium. ed: dion lewis is not there. the injury tonight to amendola. the field, edelman's not available. there's a point in time -- he's throwing passes you to and me with them. it affected them last week against the giants and affected them tonight. i asked this question to bill belichick, in my pregame interview with

many great assets about tom brady is being able to get rid of the football quickly. that's a tribute to him but it's also a tribute to a julian edelman or dion lewis, guys who are open within one or two seconds, brady gets the ball out of his hands, into their hands, and brady doesn't get harassed comfort zone. with the team a little bit and they have to adjust offensively to compensate for that especially if amendola and dobson are out for any extended period of time. a big one in denver sunday night. ed: that's a great point. mike lynch in foxborough. heather: let's hope it's a different officiating team next week. that was awful wheampt do you think, harv? harvey: i think troy brown may have to be suited up next week. ed: that's fine.
12:30 am
we have lost a lot of heat over the last 24 hours. boston is down to 30. this is already the coldest it has been so far this season in boston. the breeze has died down a lot, thankfully, six miles per hour west-northwest. 20's in most places surrounding boston, even teens at the midnight hour in orange. so it is very cold. the cape, around 30. nantucket just above freezing at the time. the winds have died down, still steady winds, 17 miles an hour in nantucket but elsewhere, much less of a factor. even with a light wind, temperatures in the teens in worcester. we'll have a decent bounce-back in temperature tomorrow afternoon, not that different from this past afternoon, upper 30's cold spots, worcester hills, low to mid 30's for the coastline but changes are coming.
12:31 am
i'm predicting about a 42 for a high tomorrow in boston. thanksgiving day, in the 50's. we'll have a significant turnaround and probably about the umpteenth warm-up this month of november, averaging well above average. high pressure, seeing its cold side but we'll see the warmer side for the second half of the week. that's the good news there. let's break down the next seven days. a lot will be happening. we've got travel going on around the country tomorrow. basically it's the far west with snow and rain and stormy weather but the eastern 2/3 of the country looks fine. jumping ahead to wednesday, some of the wet weather moves into the middle of the country in the form of showers. snows in the far west but the eastern third of the country is fine. both of those are big travel days and the east looks ok. as for football. i think the temperatures start in the 30's at dawn on thanksgiving day which means they move up to about 40 for the start of the football games and
12:32 am
football games and into the 50's during the afternoon. and still in the 40's dinner time and past. friday's another warm day. it probably will hit 60 or a little higher in boston, then a front will come through, either overnight friday night or first thing saturday. it may start mild saturday, temperatures will be steady and start to fall. friday is a quiet, mild day. of course that is black friday. and even then, if you're going to be thinking about doing shopping, midnight on thanksgiving night or early friday morning, temperatures should be above freezing in most areas, which is not always the case. we will be turning chillier over the weekend, especially later saturday, saturday night, sunday, but only to where we should be for this time of the year, not below average in temperature by much. temperature should be in the 40's for highs on sunday. we might get significant storminess roughly about the middle of next week, way, way, way, long way away, probably the liquid form because the overall parent

-- pattern doesn't look that cold. cold overnight and first thing tomorrow but mild thanksgiving. heather: the troubling point in the game when you see amendola grab his leg, take his helmet off and put his hat on. ed: lynchie, on the 40-yard play on the series before, the pass play, the catch and the run, that set up the go-ahead touchdown to keep them ahead, i thought i noticed something then. did he injury it on the punt return? or do you think it was on the 40-yard pass play? mike: it may have been on the 40-yard pass but on the punt, he signaled for a fair catch. he didn't even field the punt. as the ball was bouncing around, you could see him when he walks off the field, he was reaching down and grabbing by his left leg and there was labeled a knee injury and they said his return was questionable. that was after aaron dobson went out. here's a big pass play right down to the 40-yard line right there. he seems ok, seems ok. and he was a big part of
12:34 am
the offense, everyone knew he was the next man up. one thing he started to do, one thing edelman does is yards after catch, edelman does it very well and amendola, this was his best yards after catch night that we've seen. that's where he's brought down, that set up the touchdown by james white. he appears to be fine. it happened later on a punted, fair catch on the punt and the ball was bouncing around. as he was leaving the field, he grabbed his leg as he walked off. first it looked like a hamstring injury but the report came that he left the game with a knee injury and dobson was questionable with a back injury and leaves the game with another injury. we're awaiting bill belichick, by the way, and when he comes to the podium, we'll hear what he has to say. we'll be back. >> next on newscenter 5. >> whitey

12:41 am
joe dug him out. brandon's kind of an interesting guy. he's played pretty much every position on the field on defense. at auburn. it's hard to imagine he was a was and he actually didn't play bad. he's obviously undersized but good playing strength, can definitely run. the punt team. today we used him at the gunner. used him as a gunner last week. another fumble, got another fumble out of john mcelvin so that was a big play for us. he's given us big plays on the return game, blocking and also kickoff and punt coverage. he's kind of given us some versatility. he's bigger than a lot of the speed guys and he's faster than a lot of the big guys so he's kind of a mismatched guy. whether inside or outside, if you will.
12:42 am
and he's really done a good job of learning multiple positions. joe and bubba have done a great job of training him in assignments and techniques. he's been a good player for us. he plays on the punt team inside. now he made some plays as a gunner opposite of slater so if they double slater, had three guys on him on one play tonight. then that creates opportunities on the other side. he's taking advantage of those and helping us. he's done a good job. really, joe dug him out. reporter: bill, word about tom brady's toughness in the pocket. he took a lot of hits but made a lot of key plays. coach: i don't think anybody questions tom's toughness mentally or physically.
