the small trend making a big splash in the boston area. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm randy price. erika: and i'm erika tarantal in cindy is here. it's a cold start. overall this is a nice, quiet week. cindy: we're lucking out this year for thanksgiving. thanksgiving last year. i don't know if you remember that. heavier jacket. it is chilly but with bright sunshine. lighter winds overall today. 40's as they're getting off the bus this afternoon. look at the wind chill right now though. it feels like 12 in worcester. it feels like 22 in boston. even though there's not a ton of 5-15 miles per hour. morning. we have readings in the 20's on the north shore and beverly. 30 boston. 23 worcester but you see the teens around nashua, orange. norwood to taunton run inning the teens. lots of 20's on the cape this morning but skies are clear. we are going to see a lot of sunshine throughout the day. by lunchtime, we're coming up to around 40 degrees with that lighter wind. sun sets at 4:16 this afternoon.

ruffining in the lower 40's. average high this time of year is 49. so a little bit below the average today. but again dry weather expected. no problems if you're flying today here in the northeast and look at this across the country right now. no airport delays to tell you about. we'll be watching that storm coming out of the pacific northwest for later today. on the roads, how are we doing. olessa: okay. we're just watching the volume. still an accident-free morning. live look at 9 in somerville. some of those rush-hour delays start to go pick up on the southbound side. let's get to the maps and check the rest of the ride as you make your way south. still in good shape on 24. that typical volume building out of brockton. 95 looks good from sharon up to 128. route 3 also quiet for now. the expressway is about 20 braintree to boston. eastbound on the pike issue-free. 15 minutes 495 to 128 and 93 south some delays out of methuen to dascomb road. once again near wilmington and approaching spot pond. trains and buses doing okay. erika. erika: thanks so much. also breaking. a russian warplane has been shot down by turkish military on the border with syria.

be reviewed by replay. reporting live at gillette stadium, i'm kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: breaking overnight. a state trooper struck by an alleged drunk driver while directing traffic in foxborough following the game. it happened just before midnight on route 1. the driver, 29-year-old catherine williams, was arrested and charged with o.u.i. the trooper, who was alert, was taken to the hospital for evaluation. also breaking. five people shot at a protest in minneapolis. police say the suspects on the run are believed to be three white men wearing bullet-proof vests. the violence happening near a police precinct that has been the site of demonstrations fueled by the shooting death of an unarmed black man by an officer. none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. the justice department is investigating the officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of 24-year-old erika: right now two firefighters are hurt after

boston. both were taken to mass general last night with non-life- threatening injuries. firefighters say the flames on lexington street were caused by a plumber's torch being used for work on a third-floor bathroom. randy: breaking overnight. four people are dead in a chopper crash at fort hood in texas. the u.s. army says four crew members were on a training mission when the chopper went down last night. more information as we get it. erika: right now a worldwide travel warning is in effect as millions of americans head out for the holiday. the eye's todd kazakiewich is live at south station with the heightened alert. todd: good morning, erika. the state department is issuing the warning to americans in light of recent terror attacks and ongoing threats of additional attacks. the warning describes terrorists using conventional and non-conventional weapons to target official and private interests. there was no added security seen at logan last night. at least nothing visible. the t.s.a. saying this new warning does not change how they

their plans to fly. >> what can we do? we've got to keep living. just be more aware, maybe take more precautions but keep living. todd: right now, there are no specific threats focusing on the boston area. the travel warning expires in three months. live at south station, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newcenter 5. erika: a potentially deadly discovery on the outskirts of paris. police say an explosive vest similar to those used in the attacks earlier this month was found by a street cleaner in a pile of garbage. the vest contained bolts and the same explosives used in the attacks. the vest was found in a neighborhood where one of the suspects cell phones was tracked shortly after the attacks. president obama and french president francois hollande will meet today at the white house. the paris terror attacks a top priority to discuss. the two hope to revamp efforts to defeat isis. randy: the baby sitter accused of kidnapping a little girl in hamilton is being held without bail this morning. she'll undergo a psychiatric

appearance. abigail hanna appeared disoriented when she was brought into the courtroom for arraignment. she's accused of kidnapping two-year-old lyndon albers last week. that little girl was found hours later. her head had been shaved and she suffered other injuries. the police warrant reads when investigators found the 21-year-old baby sitter she was covered in dirt, claiming she tried to corral a stray cat. her attorney says over the weekend hanna experienced auditory and visual hallucinations. she also described with a history of multiple suicide attempts. a beverly man is back in court today to face murder charges in the death of his wife. axel scherer reportedly confessed to choking edith black scherer in her home last monday. she was found unconscious with a pillow over her head. she died saturday. scherer has been held without bail.

>> it's horrible. because they were our babies. erika: a community comes together to pay tribute to dozens of animals killed in a shelter fire. this morning, firefighters are still trying to figure out what sparked the flames that killed more than 30 cats and dogs. we brought this to you as breaking news on yesterday's eyeopener. firefighters say the sweetpea animal shelter in paxton was engulfed when they arrived. despite challenges, they were able to save five dogs. there is a social media campaign for donations to help this animal sanctuary get up and running. you can find that information on wcvb.com. the murder trial of the danvers teen accused of killing his jurors will return after thanksgiving. yesterday, they saw video showing phillp chism at a movie theater hours after the murder using victim colleen ritzer's credit card. evidence was presented indicating the teen stole a knife from b.j.'s wholesale club. chism's lawyers plan an insanity defense.

here the next several days and a warming trend coming our way by thanksgiving. so look forward to that as you step out into this, this morning. teens and 20's in the suburbs. we're at 18 in taunton. 16 in norwood. as cold as 15 right now in orange. it was down to 13 last hour. 23 worcester. 30 right now in boston. and your 12-hour forecast holds us around 30 degrees for the next couple of hours. by 9:00 a.m. we're up over the freezing mark. 40 degree here by noontime. sunshine all the way today. that really is the key to today because as you go through the day, winds will be coming out of the west. they're generally at or below 10 miles an hour. compare that to yesterday when they're gusting 20-30 miles per hour. you are going to notice the difference. you've got high pressure nosing in right now. it's keeping some of this cloud cover and snow shower activity off to our west. during the afternoon, a couple of these clouds may sneak in. overall it's a mostly sunny afternoon. coming up to 41 for the high in worcester. 44 in boston. an average high is 49. we're a little bit below the

average again today with low to mid 40's on cape cod as well. we stay mainly clear tonight. down in the low 20's in our coldest suburbs. tomorrow is is a dry day. still lots of sun shiefn but still cool temperatures running in the 40's as high pressure remains in control. that is keeping the weather dry up and down the eastern seaboard. storm coming out of the pacific northwest will spread in some rain from chicago to st. louis to dallas. if you're traveling coming up tomorrow and do notice there will be some snow on the backside of it. that system takes all week long to come towards us. before it gets here, we warm it up into the lower 50's on thanksgiving. black friday should be up around 60 degrees in the afternoon. as we get towards friday night here come that frontal boundary. you can see there will be just a few showers associated with it. most of those come through early in the day on saturday. then behind it, it will cool down. so from 60 on friday and 50's on saturday, we're back down into the 40's sunday into monday. last year around thanksgiving we had couple of inches of snow. olessa: don't even say that word.

since '97-'98. i think it is a big factor. cindy: but that's not the only factor. tonight at 11:00, cohen and harvey leonard lay out the winter weather predictions even the total amount of snow cohen thinks we'll see. looking forward to that. erika? erika: 6:18 right now. economic headlines this morning. ford is recalling more than 450,000 cars because of a potential fuel leak. the recall includes 2010 and 2011 ford fusion and mercury milan models all built at the plant in mexico. ford says the vehicles have a canister purge valve that may malfunction and cause a crack in the fuel tank. that could eventually spark a fire. ford says it is not aware of any asian stocks are lower this morning amid slumping commodity right now, dow futures are lower on wall street after stocks failed to hold early gains yesterday. the dow dropped 31 points at yesterday's close. dell is admitting to a security

5. erika: today is marked as the worst travel day of the year. and for good reason. on the road checking on conditions for us this morning. sera: traffic going well on 128 in the lexington-concord area but it will be a lot more different, a lot worse later we usually think of the day before thanksgiving as the on the roads but for boston today is actually the busiest day. according to data from google maps as well as the state transportation department, we are the only major city that experiences the heaviest volume of traffic on the tuesday before turkey day. for the rest of the country tomorrow is the most congested day. take a look at the numbers. last year mass-dot tallied over 700,000 toll transactions around boston and the mass pike on tuesday. on wednesday the day before thanksgiving they had about 200,000 less tolls taken. and traffic is expected to be at its peak at around 5:00 p.m. today.

so if you're hitting the roads this afternoon hoping to avoid some of the holiday traffic, ug might want to think again if you can. live from 128, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: new this morning. the "t" looking into fares based on a rider's income. the mbta fiscal board is set to discuss a potential fare hike in january with a vote in february. according to "the herald," one member of the board saying she can't imagine adjusting the price to ride the subways and buses without a low-income fare in the system. new this morning. federal prosecutors are investigating strong-arm allegations against everett's mayor. at issue is whether mayor carlo demaria forced the developer in charge of transforming the former charleston chew factory into a luxury apartment complex to use union labor workers. according to "the globe," the developer was against the idea when it was proposed originally citing it would drive up costs. however, he did end up hiring

some union labor workers and now federal prosecutors want to know why. >> it was awful. erika: only on 5, the one-time girlfriend of james "whitey" bulger criticizes the hollywood blockbuster depicting the boston mobster. despite acclaim from critics, lindsey cyr tells newscenter 5 there is a lot the movie got wrong. cyr dated bulger for 12 years, and the two had a child together. she says she knew nothing of bulger's murderous dark side. she only knew him as a loving father. portrayed by dakota johnson, cyr says the movie does not represent the relationship between bulger and the pair's son, douglass. johnny depp as whitey: if nobody sees it, it didn't happen. cyr: if you do something and nobody sees it, you didn't do it. i would have smacked him in the back of the head if i walked past him and said, "what the reel are you talking about?" erika: douglass died at the age of 6 after a severe reaction to medicine. randy: "5 investigates" taking a

"5 investigates" looking into students and concussions. investigative reporter karen anderson found that one in five middle and high school athletes in massachusetts report they likely got a concussion.

even more disturbing, about half of those students say they kept playing. getting a second head injury while the first one isn't healed raises the risk of serious, even permanent brain injury. ryan farrell has permanent brain damage after she kept practicing after a cheerleading fall. she was outraged more isn't being done. ryan farrell: i heard that and i wanted to scream because i don't care if it's the state championship game and you're in the final seconds of sudden death overtime, it is not worth the rest of your life. you only get one brain. erika: the state public health department says it is very concerned about the number of student concussions. they're working with schools to improve the way head injuries are tracked and prevent students randy: updates ahead on breaking a russian warplane shot down over syria. the mission it had just completed. and local muslims sharing safety concerns after the attacks in what they're asking for in worcester. we introduced you to nate

islamic center complex. the action comes after a request from the state chapter of the council of american-islamic relations asking for increased police protections amid the attacks in paris. according to "the telegram," there have been no specific threats made. erika: massachusetts congressman seth moulton meets today with syrian refugees and community leaders. moulton has been vocally opposed to recent talks of keeping refugees out of several states in the u.s. including massachusetts. the roundtable this afternoon is at the state's immigrant and refugee advocacy coalition on chauncy street. we now know when a one-time friend of boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev will be sentenced. stephen silva will learn his punishment on december 2 after pleading guilty to charges of heroin distribution and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. the 22-year-old is accused of loaning a gun to tsarnaev-- the same gun used to kill m.i.t. police officer sean collier in the days after the bombing.

randy: sky 5 over a whale stranded in kingston. the beached minke whale did get pulled back into the water by the high tide yesterday, but new england aquarium officials warn the whale is likely ill and may not survive. crews will be back out this morning to search for the whale. erika: the mbta has voted to ban all political ads debating moral, religious, and social issues. the decision was made at a meeting yesterday focused on an ad in the red line's davis square station that angered members of the jewish community. the new policy is legal and consistent with policies in the new york and chicago transit system. it takes effect december 1 and also will apply to all animal cruelty ads. randy: governor baker says he agrees with recommendations made by the state's attorney general regarding fantasy sports sites. maura healey's plan allows companies like fanduel and boston-based draftkings to continue operating in massachusetts but with new rules including age and advertising restrictions. baker said monday he believes healey's plan covers the bases

dashcam video captures a man running toward two women on the street. that's when a clown known as doo doo calls to the pair and tells them to get in his car. he says the man then started hitting the vehicle. police arrived a short time later and arrested the suspect. erika: a new operation is underway in new hampshire to bring winter coats to children in need. it's call operation warm black friday. governor maggie hassan joined with a state firefighters group for the project. firefighters will take donations, then distribute the coats to kids. donations are being accepted right now at fire stations across the state. randy: olessa, it looks pretty slow on route 1. olessa: watching delays in saugus. the southbound side, you can see that volume. we're used to it at this time in the morning. later this afternoon a different story. expect heavier volume. let's get over to the maps. no accidents to report right now. 93 southbound volume out of wilmington as you travel down towards spot pond really picks up from there and down to the leverett connector.

a few clouds off to the west. outside of that, it's pretty quiet across the country. there's one system out in the pacific northwest. it is going to take until friday night and saturday before that catches up with us. we've got dry weather for traveling up and down the eastern seaboard coming up tomorrow. that storm pulls in to the midwest with some rain around chicago tomorrow. some snow on the backside. we are quieting it down. that rain for us comes in probably friday night. the cold front is going to drop on in. a few showers associated with it through the early part of saturday. and then behind it, cooler temperatures settling on in. look at that warm-up. thanksgiving looks good. for all those football games. temperatures in the 50's right around 60 degrees here by friday. so after a little cold snap it's going to feel like summer. it will be nice and mild at least. erika: nice little stretch going on. cindy: it is. last year we had snow around thanksgiving so this is definitely easier to take especially if you're traveling. randy: we're on the move this morning. in fact, driving along i think 128 at this hour. we can see the traffic moving along nights leer here.
